According to a joint study by the IAMAI-IMRB, there are about two million users accessing the Internet through their mobile phones and other mobile devices on an active basis--those who access the Internet through their mobile devices at least once a month. The report highlights that nearly 70 per cent of these users fall into the age group of 18-35 years, which incidentally constitutes the major chunk of active Internet user base in the country. About 60 per cent users are estimated to be accessing the Internet through mobile devices for activities like chatting, accessing the social networking sites and mobile blogging, followed by information search (23 per cent of the total active users. 7. Source DUBAI: Over 1.75 million Indian nationals living in the UAE will find it easier to send money home using their mobile phones, with the Emirates' leading telecom company set to enter the USD 10 billion remittance market with a new service. UAE's leading telecom services provider, Etisalat, has partnered with Citibank to start the programme in India and plans to expand it to Bangladesh, Pakistan and Egypt in the coming months, the group's chief marketing officer, Essa al Haddad, was quoted by the local media as saying. "We are making it available for our Indian customers to send money to their relatives in India," al Haddad said. The service, which will be available later this month, will work with all types of mobile phones. Etisalat, however, did not say how much it would cost. The media reports said that the service could, however, threaten the hold of currency exchange houses on the USD 10 billion remittance business. At least USD 52 billion in remittances were sent to India in 2008 by expatriates working across the Gulf, according to World Bank data, with the UAE representing about 13 per cent of the total remittances to India. "With something like this it will be much easier to send money back to India," said 32-year-old Imthiaz Abbas, a showroom manager in Dubai Festival City. "Direct remittance on the mobile will be much faster than to come to a retail exchange store," he said.

  13. Towers Sending Tumour Signals

Mumbai's swanky Usha Kiran building says the four cancer cases there could be linked to mobile towers installed on the facing Vijay Apartments Mobile towers or mobile tumours? That is the question. A slew of buildings in the plush Carmichael Road area in South Mumbai, have come together to appeal to Vijay Apartments to remove mobile towers on top of their building, to prevent harmful radiation. The trigger is a couple of cancer cases in Usha Kiran building located opposite Vijay Apartments. Though studies have not yet shown proof of a direct link between mobile tower radiation and cancer, Burjor Cooper, chairman, Carmichael Road Citizen's Committee, (CRCC) echoes the sentiments of those opposed to the towers in his recent appeal, when he says: "It will take several years for the completion of conclusive research and for any restrictions and safety standards to be implemented -- with the result that many innocent lives could be lost because of the harmful effects of mobile phone towers."
