  1. Don’t Let Your Heart Burn Out

49.1 per cent of Indians in high heart attack risk zone Source It is that time of the year when you listen to your heart, quite literally. World Heart Day, falling on the last Sunday of September every year, is only a reminder to do the above. World Heart Day, the World Heart Federation tells us, was created to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death, claiming 17.2 million lives each year. This year’s theme “Work with Heart” is specifically built around the workplace. The WHF, the World Health Organization and the World Economic Forum have joined forces to call on governments, employers and workers around the world to make workplaces healthier. Workplace wellness programmes that encourage healthy diets, physical activity and restrictions on tobacco use have been shown to be a cost-effective way to save lives and improve productivity. A study conducted among over 8,000 people across the country, conducted by SaffolaLife in 2008, has shown that Indians’ lipid profiles puts us at higher risk of heart ailments compared to other age groups. Lipids are important dietary constituents, because of their high energy value and the vitamins and essential fatty acids associated with them. The study details the LDL, HDL and TGL of these people. Initial results showed that 49.1 per cent of Indians have poor lipid profile, thereby increasing the chances for heart attacks. What is worrying still is the study’s contention that the majority of young men in the age group 30-39 years show abnormalities in their lipid profiles. Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu top the risk list by having all three indicators (LDL, TGL and HDL) above acceptable levels. It also held that 20 per cent of women are at risk after they cross 40 years, linking it with menopause and the consequent decrease in estrogen. “Most women know that they are naturally protected by estrogen. However, very few are aware that with high levels of stress, or diabetes, even estrogen is no protection,” V. Chockalingam, senior cardiologist, says. He adds that the ideal total cholesterol level must be less than 200 mg, LDL at less than 100 mg, HDL at over 50 mg and TGL under 150 mg. However, if you do not yet have the perfect levels, there is hope. Dr. Chockalingam says the situation can be remedied by altering food habits, taking up exercise, and having a healthy mind set. Clearly coronary disease is on the rise, says S. Visvakumar, cardio thoracic surgeon, Government General Hospital. “When I joined the government service several years ago, we were seeing more of rheumatic heart disease. Now it is Ischemic Heart Disease, thanks to alterations in lifestyles cutting across economic groups,” he says. Also the disease is occurring much earlier than it used to, he adds. He talks of how he had to operate on girls as young as 22 years and of how a first year medical student died recently of a heart attack. “If youngsters come with abnormal lipid levels and they have a family history of heart problems, then we prefer to treat them aggressively early on,” he explains. Diet modifications and a rigorous exercise schedule are also prescribed.

  3. Source Four years from now, more than half of Indian residents will be able to verify their identity using a cell phone, said Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). “We will be issuing a number to every Indian resident. These numbers will be stored in one central database,” Nilekani said on Saturday, speaking at the 67th Foundation Day ceremony of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. “We propose to offer mobile phone authentication of identity against this database.” Authorities who want to confirm a resident’s identity will be able to take the resident’s fingerprint, send it via mobile phone to the database, and receive a confirmation of the resident’s identity, the ex-Infosys chief said. Under this plan, residents would not need to carry paper proofs of identity. “With this number and nationally available online authentication, you can go from one part of the country to another and get yourself verified wherever you are,” Nilekani said. The plan will enhance the efficiency of flagship government programmes like NREGA and PDS, said Nilekani. Banks, insurers and passport offices will also benefit.

  5. Yoga for the benefit of TNSTC employees Source NAGERCOIL: Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai) Division in Kanyakumari district has introduced a ‘passenger-friendly’ programme to the conductors and drivers. Speaking to The Hindu, the General Manager, Ravi Varma said here on Thursday that most of the time the conductors quarrel with the passengers. Similarly the drivers do not follow rules and engage in heated argument with drivers of other vehicles or with the police. Moreover, they do not stop the buses at the particular place of the bus stop, instead they stop it few feet before or after the stop. Owing to the adamant behaviour of some drivers and conductors, the passengers particularly students and office goers were put in to untold hardship during peak hours. From a survey, taken by a few non-governmental organizations it was understood that due to depression and tension, the employees behave in an irresponsible manner while they are on duty. Hence it was decided to give training in yoga to all the TNSTC employees in a phased manner under ‘smile while you work’ programme. In the first phase, a 20-member team including conductors and drivers were given training at Ranithottam depot for two hours on Wednesday. They were trained in Bhavana Muthasanam, Salabasanam, Thuvibatha Peedasanam, Usarttasanam and breathing exercise.A healthy mind and body would help the employees to behave with a humane touch to others and they will stand as a model to others in future. Similar yoga session would be held for other employees in the future.Accidents often occur due to an unrest mind and such sessions would definitely minimize the accident rate. This kind of yoga and breathing exercise would be very helpful to the employees. Moreover, technical training would also be given to update their knowledge.A sound body and mind would be helpful for their involvement in work’, said the General Manager. The yoga teacher, Radhakrishnan and the technical training by the Technical Manager, Muthukaruppan, gave the training.
  6. Govt to introduce mobile no. portability by Dec 31 Source Hyderabad, Sep 23 (PTI) Union Minister for IT and Communication A Raja today said the Centre has decided to introduce mobile phone number portability in four metros with effect from December 31. Under this scheme, a subscriber of BSNL can switch over to any mobile service provider by retaining the old number, the Minister said on the sidelines of the inaugural meeting of International Telecom Union here. The service will be extended to rest of the country in next six months, he said. Raja said the government is contemplating to amend cyber laws to protect the interest of internet users. On Bharti Airtel's USD 23 billion proposal to acquire a controlling stake in South Africa's telecom service provider MTN, which hit a road block after South Africa insisted on dual listing, he said the issue was now under the purview of Minister of Finance (MoF).

  10. Are Humans Naturally Veg Or Non-veg ?

Cereal grains and cancer - No primates other than humans ordinarily consume cereal grains, but from the introduction of agriculture onwards grains have been the single most important contributor to human food energy, providing from 40 to 90% of human caloric requirements. In doing so they have displaced fruits and vegetables which, until the Neolithic, had been the dominant energy source for Stone Agers, earlier hominids and our antecedent primate ancestors for 50 million years. A recent comprehensive analysis (150 scientists reviewed 4500 research studies) puts this phenomenon into perspective (World Cancer Research Fund & American Institute for Cancer Research, 1997). The influence of dietary variables on 18 different cancers was assessed. Vegetables were found to exert a convincing preventive effect for five cancers, a probable preventive effect for four others, and a possible preventive effect for another seven. For fruits the analysis revealed four convincing, four probable and four possible preventive relationships. But for cereal grains there were no convincing or probable preventive relationships, only one possible preventive effect and, for one cancer (of the esophagus) grains may possibly have increased risk. In short, the best available evidence suggests that vegetables and fruits have far more cancer-preventing potential than do grains. This probably reflects the phytochemical content of fruits and vegetables, phytochemicals to which current human biology became adapted through many million years of evolutionary interrelationships. The phytochemicals of grains have interacted with the human genome for only 10,000 years, hence substitution of grains for vegetables and fruits in human diets might readily diminish our resistance to development of neoplastic disease.

  13. Are Humans Naturally Veg Or Non-veg ?

Becoming vegetarian is one of the most important and effective actions you can take to ease the strain on our Earth’s limited resources, protect the planet from pollution, prevent global warming, and save countless species from extinction. According to Dr. David Brubaker, PhD, at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for a Livable Future, “The way that we breed animals for food is a threat to the planet. It pollutes our environment while consuming huge amounts of water, grain, petroleum, pesticides and drugs. The results are disastrous.” As the Sierra Club put it in their 2002 report on animal factories, “environmental violations by the meat industry add up to a rap sheet longer than War and Peace.” ---------- “Vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein, as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and phytochemicals. Vegetarians have been reported to have lower body mass indices than nonvegetarians, as well as lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; vegetarians also show lower blood cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure; and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer.” --American Dietetic Association, June 2003 position paper

  15. Source NAGPUR: Consumers had a harrowing time on Saturday as Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) sealed 46 mobile towers of four private operators including Airtel, Idea, Vodafone and Tata Telecom. Only the government-run BSNL was spared as its officers had submitted a plan on Friday mentioning the steps they would take to comply with NMC's requirements. Unless the private mobile companies take immediate remedial steps, the problem would worsen as NMC plans to seal 135 more towers. Even if one third of the towers stop functioning, mobile services will be paralyzed in the city. Additional deputy municipal commissioner (ADMC) Ajay Ramteke told the media that even though NMC had been issuing notices to the mobile companies and owners of buildings where the towers were installed since last one year, many had not complied with the requirements. Ramteke said that there were 524 mobile towers in the city of which 261 were found to be violating Section 54 of Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The companies were issued notices regarding the 261 towers. However, the requirements were met only for 80 towers. 181 mobile towers were functioning illegally in the city, he said. The ADMC said that NMC had issued an ultimatum to the companies three days ago but other than BSNL, none of companies acted on it. On the first day, 20 towers of Airtel, 11 of Idea, 11 of Vodafone and four towers Tata were sealed. The action was taken in all ten zones under supervision of executive engineer (electrical) Sanjay Jaiswal. Ramteke said that to avoid inconvenience to consumers, NMC had devised a temporary solution. The mobile companies would have to pay Rs 1 lakh fee for three years, Rs 50,000 as deposit and Rs 10,000 as fine for not taking permission on time. "We will allow the towers to function for which money is deposited and give the companies eight days to submit the requisite documents. NMC has been deprived of around Rs 5 crore due to non-compliance of norms by the companies." TOI tried to contact the officials of mobile companies but all of them either gave evasive responses or did not take the call even after repeated attempts. Shalini Gupta, spokesperson of Airtel said that as she had not received information about NMC action she could not comment on the issue. Mohana Manjre of Vodafone did not take the call in spite of repeated attempts. Other officials claimed that they were not authorised to speak to the media.

  19. Times of India 26 Apr 2009, 0430 hrs IST Ahmedabad : Imagine a scenario where a group of Anti-Terrorist-Squad (ATS) members of the state police come knocking at your door for using a cell phone! You will only have your touch screen Chinese O-phone' to blame for this. It is then that you realise that your distinct phone identification number the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) which the police use to track criminals, is the same as some 1,000 Chinese phones already in use one of which a terrorist might be using. Worse, most of these Chinese phones do not have IMEI or have just 15-digit IMEI numbers instead of 16 digits. This is the case for both GSM and CDMA phones that are readily avaliable in the grey market. The Department of Telecom (DoT) had issued directions to all mobile service providers, in the interest of national security, that by April 15, 2009 they should incorporate the Equipment Identity Register (EIR) software to automatically block services to customers who use handsets without IMEI numbers or have number as 00000...'. But except for BSNL in Gujarat, other mobile phone service providers are still in the process of implementing the system. Once implemented, the EIR does not allow you to make a call from a Chinese cell phone or to a Chinese phone with questionable IMEI number. "The EIR cannot block calls to or from phones with similar IMEI numbers as for that all service providers should share their IMEI database. But what was more dangerous were phones with no IMEI numbers there were thousands of GSM phones with such discrepancy and most of them were prepaid customers, whose identification documents were also questionable," said a senior Gujarat circle officer of BSNL. "There are few software companies that make EIR and they charge a fortune. Besides, most of the low end prepaid scheme users use Chinese phones, which may again translate to some revenue loss for service providers," he added. Senior telecom officers pointed out that IMEI numbers are only alloted to mobile phone manufacturing companies by British Approvals Board for Telecommunications (BABT). "Chinese phones, especially the non-branded ones, copy a single IMEI number on to at least 1,000 phones. These IMEI serial numbers may belong to a branded handset. We have had cases like these in Mumbai and Hyderabad circles," added the BSNL officer.
  20. Grey market CDMA mobiles too face disconnection Source 2-3 million users may be hit but impact less compared with GSM users. Stepping up security The ban on GSM handsets without ID number from Dec 1 CDMA handsets were not included in the earlier order Import ban on CDMA sets to be issued by DGFT New Delhi, Sept. 17 After banning illegal GSM handsets, the Government is now moving to bar services to all CDMA mobile phone users without the unique identity number. However, unlike GSM subscribers who have the option of getting the identity number implanted through a software by November 30, CDMA subscribers may not get any such relaxation. The move is expected to hit about 2-3 million CDMA subscribers who have bought handsets from the grey market. The Government move follows representation from the Japanese handset manufacturer Kyocera Wireless, which informed the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade that legal CDMA handsets have Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) as a unique number, similar to the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) in a GSM handset. The Japanese vendor pointed out that the Government directive to ban illegal handsets without IMEI number did not cover grey CDMA devices and, therefore, there was a need to amend the order to include MEID also in the ban order. The DGFT had sought the views of the Department of Telecom on the issue. Senior officials of the Department of Telecom said that a letter is being sent to the DGFT supporting the ban. Numeric codes IMEI and MEID are numeric codes that identify a mobile instrument. They prevent the use of stolen handsets and help security agencies track down users. However, a number of handsets sold in the grey market do not come with the identity code. Most of these handsets come from China and Taiwan. The DoT had earlier issued a directive asking GSM mobile operators to stop providing services to users whose handsets do not have the IMEI code. The order comes into effect on December 1. The ban on importing illegal CDMA handsets will be notified by the DGFT once it receives DoT’s views. However, the impact on CDMA subscribers will be less compared with GSM users because until two years ago all CDMA handsets were being sold through the operators making it impossible for grey market players to sell any device. “CDMA operators started allowing SIM-based handsets, which can be bought off the shelf, just two years ago. So the impact is only to that extent compared with the GSM segment where grey market handsets have been in use over the past 10 years,” said a CDMA player. Also, there are only three CDMA-based operators compared with over six GSM players. The move is part of the Government’s plans to address security related concerns in the telecom sector.

  23. Source NEW DELHI: State-owned telco BSNL is reevaluating its plans for launching full-fledged Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based mobile services in all major cities in the country, according to a top executive with the company. Last year, BSNL executives had outlined plans to make a major foray into the CDMA space and had said that the telco would invest between $500 million to $1 billion for expanding its CDMA operations to a pan-India level. BSNL currently has limited CDMA operations in large cities -- its mobile operations are largely concentrated on the popular Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology and it has over 52 million subscribers on this platform. One of the primary factors behind BSNL’s move to reconsider its CDMA plans is that the even the largest operators in the platform - Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Tata Teleserivices -- have now launched GSM services and are now focused on grabbing a substantial per cent of the new customer adds in this space. "The growth in the mobile space is increasingly dominated by GSM platform. BSNL will soon be able to increase its GSM capacity by an additional 93 million lines and the company efforts will therefore be towards regaining market share in this segment," the executive with the telco added. The GSM deal for 93 million lines is also estimated to cost $10 billion, and coupled with the fact that BSNL will have to shell out an over $1 billion for third generation (3G) radio spectrum, the telco also does not have the resources to pursue mobile operations on both technological platforms. But, BSNL’s earlier plan involved competing with the likes of RCOM and the Tatas on their home ground even as the latter moved GSM turf to become dual technology mobile operators. Besides, another key aspect that may force BSNL to abandon its plans to expand its CDMA operations is related to the government’s pressure on all telcos, especially state-owned ones against deploying equipments and networks supplied by Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE. Executives with the PSU say that while telcos had alternatives in Western vendors such as Ericsson, Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks in the GSM space, such options did not exist on the CDMA side. "CDMA networks are dominated by Chinese vendors and any move to procure equipment and other related infrastructure on this technological platform from vendors in other countries is likely to make the business case for BSNL unviable," explained an industry executive who is aware of the developments. The home ministry and the intelligence bureau wants Chinese companies to provide equipments in only 8 states - Delhi, Tamil nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andra Pradesh, Goa Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh - as these states do not share ‘sensitive international boundaries’. In 2007, communications and IT minister A Raja had informed Parliament that BSNL has applied for nationwide, full-fledged CDMA licence while adding that the PSU aimed to ‘provide full mobile services using CDMA technology in addition to the GSM technology under the existing CMTS licence in 21 service areas’.
  24. Source Nokia is apparently filing C Series and X Series patents that are expected to be brand/line up of handsets just like its existing N Series and E Series lineup. As most of the people know, Nokia offers N Series handsets that mostly focus on entertainment features and E-series that stands business class (Enterprise) phones. According to a Finnish site Puhelinvertailu.com, Nokia has applied for patent of C Series brand at the Finnish Patents and Trademarks office. This patent was filed on April 14. We do not know what C Series stands for since the N Series and E series aren't usually named after the words starting from the same letter like - N comes from eNtertainment. On April 15, Nokia filed another patent for X Series brand with the Finnish Patents and Trademarks office. As the name sounds similar to XpressMusic music phones, we think it's going to define the whole XpressMusic series lineup. So far, no one but Nokia has clear information on either of the series but hopefully, some words will come out at the Nokia World 2009 event, which is supposed to be held in September.
  25. Phones with No or Fake IMEI Code to Die Source If you're still using that Chinese phone sans an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number - or worse, a fake IMEI code - expect your phone to become a brick Dec. 1 onwards. After sufficient time given by the government to telecom service providers to get subscribers to legalize their handsets by acquiring a genuine IMEI number, it's time for headcounts and headshots. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has instructed Indian telecom operators to disconnect connections of handsets with fake or no IMEI numbers. To check whether your phone has an IMEI number: 1. Dial *#06# A 15-digit number will be displayed on your handset. 2. To validate the IMEI, sms IMEI <15 digit IMEI number> to 53232 (Rs. 3 per SMS) For eg; IMEI 351869910223340 to 53232 Message displayed for correct IMEI - Success!! Message displayed for incorrect IMEI - Alert!!! Invalid IMEI 3. In case of an invalid IMEI, you can either buy a handset with a genuine IMEI number or can follow the below mentioned instructions: Visit only authorized GII (Genuine IMEI Implant) centers, set up on Government approved process, which can implant new genuine IMEI on the handset. Pay a nominal charge of Rs. 199 (all inclusive) and obtain a receipt. Carry your handset with a valid identity proof for identification purposes while visiting these centers. The DoT has asked operators to submit their compliance report by Dec. 15.
