  1. Source MUMBAI: Datacom Solutions has signed an infrastructure sharing deal with Tata Teleservices (TTSL) that will allow it to lease bandwidth as well as towers across the country from the Tata group firm, executives familiar with the development said. While TTSL will provide transmission services, Wireless-TT Infoservices (WTTIL), the tower joint venture of TTSL and Quippo Telecom Infrastructure, will provide passive infrastructure like towers and shelters to the telecom subsidiary of consumer goods giant Videocon Industries. As both Datacom and TTSL are rolling out GSM networks, infrastructure sharing will help the two operators reduce operating costs. Setting up an independent tower costs around Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh, depending on the location. The deal will enable them to earn up to Rs 10,000 crore over the next 10 years, said an executive requesting anonymity. “For its requirement outside WTTIL, TTSL will use Datacom’s towers,” he said. Videocon group chairman VN Dhoot confirmed the development, but declined to provide details. A Tata-Quippo official refused to comment. Videocon, which has licence to operate in 14 telecom circles in the country, is planning to invest Rs 1,000 crore in towers this fiscal. Tata-Quippo, on the other hand, is targeting a portfolio of 50,000 towers by 2012 and is aiming at the highest tenancy ratio among tower firms. Tenancies refer to slots on towers that carry telecom signals. A single tower can host up to four-five operators. While Datacom’s deal with Tata-Quippo is for 10 years, it is likely to be extended by another five years. Tata-Quippo is targeting to end this fiscal with 30,000 towers and a capex plan of Rs 3,500 crore. “To begin with, 10,000 sites will be handed over to Datacom as per a phased rollout plan,” another executive said, requesting anonymity. By outsourcing passive infrastructure, Datacom will leverage on the existing and future tower and backbone infrastructure of Tata-Quippo, which has around 25,000 towers across the country. Datacom is among the new entrants in the crowded Indian telecom market where Bharti Airtel is the leader with over 105 million subscribers. While Dhoots of the Videocon group hold 74% in the company, Reliance Industries director Manoj Modi has a 15% stake in the company. The rest of the equity is with HFCL chairman Mahendra Nahata. The company is expected to launch services by the end of this year in Chennai and Tamil Nadu. Earlier this year, Unitech Telenor, another new entrant in the telecom space, outsourced its passive infrastructure requirements to Tata-Quippo. Typically, rent for a telecom tower ranges from Rs 24,000 to Rs 40,000 depending on the location, whether the tower is ground-based or roof-based and the number of tenants. Tata-Quippo has an average 1.6 tenants on its towers across India. Many of its towers are hosting both CDMA as well as GSM infrastructure while some cater to only one of the two services. Last month, Reliance Communications also announced a 10-year, Rs 10,000-crore infrastructure sharing deal with new entrant Etisalat. New players such as Unitech, Etisalat and Shyam Sistema are outsourcing their infrastructure as well as IT requirements to reduce the time-to-market and bring down capital expenditure requirements. Further, such deals also reduce operating costs because resources are shared with more than one player. It allows operators to have an asset light balance sheet, freeing money for marketing and branding exercises, considered core to the telecom business. In February this year, Datacom signed up with Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei for rolling out its networks in nine circles. Datcom is close to awarding its IT contract to one of the three shortlisted players, IBM, Wipro and Hewlett Packard.

  7. Source Long time rivals in the mobile phone arena Nokia and Microsoft have agreed on a partnership that might result in Microsoft's Office applications appearing on Nokia phones. The agreement, which is yet to be officially announced comes as Microsoft sees its dominance being increasingly challenged by competition like Google Docs that allow web-based office application access. With phones getting better and more "web-friendly", users are using their phones to view, edit and transfer official documents, spreadsheets and presentations, right from their phones. So, it was only a matter of time when Microsoft had to partner with Nokia, arguably the worlds largest manufacturer of mobile phones. On the flip side, Nokia too is facing the heat from newer rivals and software platforms like the iPhone and more recently, Google's very own Android platform. Interestingly, Microsoft and Nokia too compete with each other, albeit indirectly if you add in Windows Mobile, Microsoft's smartphone OS platform to the list of competing mobile OSes. For the same reason, it is widely expected that this co-operation will only exist for MS Office access on Nokia phones and nothing beyond that. A joint teleconference between Nokia and Microsoft executives is scheduled later today from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EDT (8:30 PM IST tonight).

Malaria originated in chimpanzees: research Source Researchers have zeroed in on the original source of malaria: a parasite found in chimpanzees in Africa. The parasite spread to humans perhaps 5,000 years ago. This find could aid development of a malaria vaccine. Bone marrow stem cell treatment saves legs Source The results of a clinical trial to save volunteers' leg from amputation by injecting stem cell concentrate to the limb affected by thrombo angitis obliterance (TAO) have been encouraging. The stem cells were taken from the patients' bone marrow. The clinical trial is being conducted on patients suffering from blocks in the artery of the leg. Sixty patients were enrolled in the trial, and all of them were smokers. Some had diabetes as well. Thirty nine of the 44 patients who had already undergone the mandatory 6-month follow-up did not require amputation following stem cell injection to the affected legs. Follow-up of the remaining 16 patients is under way. The last patient, enrolled on May 25, will complete his six-month follow up in November. "We have got very good results," said Dr. K.S. Vijayaragavan. "The legs of 89 per cent of the patients have been saved." Dr. Vijayaragavan, Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, is conducting the trial. According to him, the failure to save the leg of five patients was because they continued to smoke even after stem cell injection. Immediate and complete cessation of smoking is the most basic and important requirement for saving the leg. Diabetes should also be under control. Unlike in the case of atherosclerosis caused by cholesterol, blocks seen in legs are caused mainly by nicotine. Nicotine in the blood causes the muscles of the arteries to constrict. It also damages the vessel's inner lining. The problems get compounded if the patient has diabetes. While nicotine damages all of the body's arteries equally, the legs are affected the most. That is because the legs depend on one narrow artery for blood supply and there are fewer smaller vessels branching off from the artery (collaterals). Tobacco in any form can cause TAO. And TAO very often affects younger people around 40 years of age. The injection of stem cells would therefore help in creating new collaterals and these would provide the vital conduit for blood flow to the parts of the leg below the block. "The stem cells injected help in angiogenesis," said Dr. Vijayaragavan. "We did not see any great difference in angiogenesis between the two groups [one that got stem cell injections very close to the blood vessel, and the second group that got injections close to the vessel and as well as into the main artery above the block]," he said. Despite the success of the current trial, Dr. Vijayaragavan insists that stem cell injection should be the last option. "The first line of treatment is a by-pass," he said. "Angioplasty is not recommended as the first-line treatment. The success rate [of angioplasty] is less than 50 per cent." Despite the success seen so far in this trial, more such trials involving more volunteers are necessary before this treatment can be offered as a regular treatment modality. The Chennai based LifeCell International, a private cord blood bank, is an equity partner at TRICell Stem Cell Centre, which is based at the Sri Ramachandra University, where the trial is being conducted.
  14. TN has 4 crore mobile subscribers, second among states after Maharashtra Source CHENNAI: In obvious signs of growing teledensity in Tamil Nadu and the involvement of technology in everyday life, every second person in the state now owns a mobile phone connection and about 65% of the population has a telephone connection. As per data available with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Tamil Nadu had more than four crore mobile subscribers by June this year. As of June 2009, the Tamil Nadu circle (which excludes Chennai) had 3.03 crore mobile subscribers while Chennai circle had 96.51 lakh subscribers. The number of landline phones in Tamil Nadu circle stood at 22.24 lakh, falling from 22.36 lakh in May 2009, while for the Chennai circle, the number was 14.10 lakh in June 2009. This takes the total number of phone connections in the state to about 4.36 crore, while the state's projected population at the end of 2009 is 6.65 crore. What is interesting is the fact that the two new entrants, MTS and Idea Cellular, have managed to add 1,21,985 subscribers within a single month between May 2009 and June 2009 in both the circles. Already, Chennai has the highest teledensity in the country at 131% (131 connections for every 100 persons). While MTS added 63,525 customers during the one-month period, Idea which launched operations in May added 58,460 customers. Tamil Nadu, including Chennai circle, stands at the number two position among states in terms of number of mobile phone subscribers at four crore. Maharashtra (including Mumbai circle) has 5.3 crore subscribers, while Andhra Pradesh has 3.3 crore subscribers. What could explain this high number of subscribers in the state is that many people have multiple phone connections. "In a city like Chennai, people use two numbers. They have dual SIM cards for official and personal use. So that could explain such large numbers vis-a-vis the population," M Srinivas, senior vice president- Tamil Nadu and Chennai, Idea Cellular, told The Times of India. Srinivasa Rao Saripalli, CEO- TN and Kerala, MTS also agrees with the view. "If you count absolute teledensity, there could be multiple connections in a household. But then, people here are more receptive to new products. They are looking at better network coverage, tariffs and quality of service." What's more, industry experts see the upward trend continuing for a while. "There are still towns and areas that have not yet been penetrated. There is still so much potential for mobile services to reach in Tamil Nadu," Srinivas of Idea said. Interestingly, of the eight operators in the stateBSNL, Aircel, Reliance, Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Teleservices, MTS and Idea Cellular, only Tata Teleservices lost subscribers between May and June. While it lost 5,454 subscribers in the Chennai circle, 11,753 customers went out of its network in the Tamil Nadu circle.
  15. Source Abani Roy, the inveterate letter writer on corporate affairs, has done it again — this time turning his own and his party’s stand on its head. The Rajya Sabha MP of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to stop the proposed merger of Bharti Airtel with South African telecom giant MTN. Not just that. He has “urged” the PM to stop all “Government functionaries” from using Airtel mobile services. His reason: MTN has a significant market share in countries that face US sanctions — Sudan, Iran, Syria and Ivory Coast. This, from a man who — echoing the Left stand — has always been critical of US sanctions, has slammed Washington’s policy toward Tehran and criticised New Delhi for its stand against Iran at the IAEA. This time, however, Roy uses US sanctions to support his claim that the proposed deal will compromise India’s “national security”. In his three-page letter addressed to the Prime Minister sent late last month, with copies to the Finance and Commerce Ministers, Roy claims the proposed Bharti and MTN “will be a serious threat to national integrity and security...(and), in no circumstance, such merger be allowed.” He adds: “Government should direct the Government functionaries to stop immediately the use of Airtel mobile and Bharti’s other telecom services.” MTN-Bharati talks come after failed negotiations between Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications and MTN. “Discussions (with Bharti) are still in progress,” MTN said in a statement to Johannesburg’s stock exchange earlier this week. On May 25, in a statement, it said the companies would hold exclusive talks until July 31. If it goes through, the MTN-Bharti deal will create the world’s third-largest mobile firm with over 200 million subscribers. MTN and its shareholders would take a 36 per cent stake in Bharti which would hold 49 percent of MTN. When asked why he had sent the letter, Roy said: “I have the country’s security interests in mind. Mobile phones and Internet are being increasingly used by terrorists. So when an Indian telecom company enters into a deal with a foreign player, the Government should keep the security aspect in mind.” So why didn’t he write the letter when Reliance Communications was in talks with MTN? “I came to know of the deal only now. I am not saying don’t give the deal to Bharti, I am only highlighting the security aspect.” In his letter, Roy claims that MTN’s presence in India will be a “threat to national security” as many of “the key national leaders, Ministers, MPs, Government officers, including those holding sensitive positions, use Airtel.” Roy has a curious track record of sending letters to various Ministers on corporate matters. Once, he wanted the security approval given to Jet Airways chief Naresh Goyal revisited; he favoured Reliance Infocomm’s proposal to pay lower royalty to Qualcomm and even sought a probe into the assets of a former Union Finance Secretary. Recently, he wrote a letter to the PM seeking the resignation of Mendu Rammohan Rao, a former independent director on the board of Satyam Computers, from various government committees. Rao was a member of government panels to select the chairman and members of SEBI, the chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
  16. Bharti Airtel declines on MTN deal delay Source Bharti Airtel declined 2.5% to Rs 374. Around 3.67 million shares changed hands at the counter today, which is three-fold increase as against its two-week average traded quantity of 1.07 million shares. The scrip touched a high of Rs 391 and a low of Rs 365 on the BSE. Bharti Airtel has slipped today morning amid concerns over the Bharti-MTN deals. According to reports, the company is working on a revised offer for a deal with the South African company. The stock opened at Rs 384, touched a high of Rs 391 and slipped to Rs 366. The scrip is now at Rs 371, down 3.5% from the previous close. The stock has slipped 53% in a month's time. Around 494,626 shares have been traded on the BSE so far. This deal will involve huge amount of cash withdrawal and additional debt to be collected in order to facilitate funding the transaction. There has still been no certainty about the closure of the deal. Bharti Airtel is in talks with the South African company for a deal to create a $23 billion telecom entity.

  22. Source It added an average 1.3 mn subscribers a month over the last one year — 30% more than its run-rate in 2007-08. ‘Walk, When you Talk’ has prompted many viewers to approach the Indian Customer Complaints Forum on the ground that walking while talking can lead to accidents, but Idea Cellular isn’t complaining. The country’s fifth largest telecom services operator is busy enjoying all the attention the campaign has drawn. The latest campaign, which is the fifth in the ‘What an Idea, Sirjee!’ series, was launched last month and its success has led Idea to conduct ‘walkathons’ all over the country, introduce theme ring tones and launch a website , which suggests that if ‘Talktime’ equals ‘Walktime’ for mobile users, fitness scores can go up. Lowe Lintas India Chairman and Creative head R Balakrishnan (popularly known as Balki), who has conceptualised the ‘What an Idea…’ series, says he sees little point in the protests. “These campaigns are based on fun themes. I don’t expect the whole world to follow it, even though I expect everyone to appreciate it,” Balki says. The ‘Walk, When you Talk’ campaign is about a universal insight that as people spend almost 1.5 hours on an average on the phone every day, walking while talking might be a solution to solve the fitness problem. Idea executives say the positioning of the campaign is simple: brand building through stirring social conscience. Chief Marketing Officer Pradeep Shrivastava says the top three telecom operators have the same kinds of products, services and tariffs, and Idea saw no point in treading the same path. “We decided that our campaigns should be around ideas that have the power to change the society we live in,” he says. In a highly-commoditised market like telecom, the ‘What an idea…’ campaigns, featuring actor Abhishek Bachhan, has helped make that differentiation and created the right brand image, Shrivastava says. So while the first ad in the series showed Bachchan (playing the role of a village sarpanch) replacing people’s names with 10-digit mobile numbers, the underlying theme was an attack against caste wars since numbers don’t belong to any particular caste or religion. The other campaigns – on education for all (classes taken over mobile phones; a parent pleading with a principal for a child’s admission), democracy (say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ over mobile phones for a political decision) and communication for all (a deaf woman using a mobile phone as a guide during her visit to the Taj) – were all aimed at projecting the Idea brand as a socially responsible corporate citizen. “Primarily, we are celebrating the power of an idea, which is our tagline – ‘An idea can change your life – but we are also making subtle attempts at brand building. For example, in the ‘Walk, When You Talk’ ad, people are shown talking inside buildings, vehicles and highways, a reference to our strong network,” Shrivastava says. While Idea declined to specify its advertisement spends, Spatial Access Solutions says Bharti Airtel was the highest telecom services spender in 2008 with a total outgo of Rs 976 crore. This was followed by Vodafone (Rs 750 crore), Reliance (Rs 669 crore), Tata Teleservices (Rs 625 crore), BSNL (Rs 445 crore) and Idea Cellular (Rs 408 crore). Idea, which started operations in 1995 as Birla Communications, underwent several name changes, and till early 2000 was operating under various names such as Birla-Tata-AT&T, RPG Cellular (in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh), ‘AT&T’ (in Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat) and ‘Tata Cellular’ in Andhra Pradesh. The need for a common high-voltage campaign was felt when the company decided to consolidate all its business under the Idea Cellular brand in 2002. As part of its overall brand building efforts, the company also advertised heavily during the showbiz event IIFA, Indian Premier League (IPL), Idea Star Singer and Idea Sa Re Ga Ma among others. Idea is also taking its ‘Walk When You Talk’ campaign out-of-home (OOH) for which it has roped in 141 Wall Street (a division of Bates 141). The campaign has worked for Idea Cellular in consolidating its position as the fifth largest operator in the country with presence across 17 circles and a subscriber base of around 47 million. The company has managed a 45 per cent-plus growth in revenues for the last two successive financial years. It added an average 1.3 million subscribers a month over the last one year, 30 per cent more than its run-rate in 2007-08 and double that of 2006-07. In established circles such as Kerala, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, Idea is the top mobile operator in terms of the subscriber base. In Andhra Pradesh, Idea’s network presence has gone up from just 300 towns three years ago to 3,500 now. The ‘Sirjees’ that the company addresses in its campaigns seem to be taking Idea’s calls seriously.

Source New Delhi: Direct-to-home service provider Tata Sky is renegotiating contracts with vendors and distributors as part of its cost-cutting drive that could bring down operational costs by 30%.“We have introduced an internal programme called ‘slim fit´ to improve productivity and bring down our operational cost by a minimum of 30%. This will improve and increase productivity and we will therefore reduce our costs drastically through every means,” Tata Sky chief executive officer Vikram Kaushik said. The programme includes renegotiation of all contracts and aggressive outsourcing of services, including installation, he said. He, however, did not specify the amount to be saved. “Project ‘slim fit´ has been running for the past 4-5 months and the availability of free cash and funding from banks will help us in building our infrastructure and projects,” Kaushik said. He said that though the company had introduced low-cost packages, it is currently selling at a premium (compared to others) and its average revenue per user (ARPU) is higher than the industry’s. Tata Sky has crossed the 40-lakh-subscriber mark and plans to add another 10-15 lakh users this year.
  24. BSNL earmarks Rs 1,250 cr on MNP system upgrade Source NEW DELHI: Anticipating to woo a big chunk of mobile subscribers from rivals to its network, BSNL has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 1,250 crore to make its network ready for number portability, which allows customers to change service providers without changing numbers. BSNL is required to make an initial capital expenditure (CAPEX) of about 1,065 cores for making its basic and mobile networks MNP compliant, in addition to annual OPEX of about Rs 185 crores for the purpose of MNP service, said a senior company official. BSNL has also asked TRAI to consider the huge expenses operators have to undertake while deciding on the porting charges. The company has asked TRAI to make provisions to ensure parties involved in the operation, donor operators (the subscriber losing operator), fixed line operators, recipient operator and the MNP service provider (either Synverse or MNP Interconnection), get a share of the porting charges, which are paid by customers who port their numbers. Analyst say if BSNL's concerns are addressed the cost for a consumer seeking to change service provider while retaining his number will be more than Rs 500. TRAI officials said they are trying to keep the charges around Rs 200.
