feels like i am a newbie.. BTW any update on Friendly URLs URLs to topics, forums, profiles, etc. in IPB are now formatted without a query string where possible. For example, yoursite.tld/forums/index.php?showforum=10 becomes yoursite.tld/forums/index.php/forum/10/general-chat which is much more human-readable and friendly to search engines.

Coming soon: A grapefruit pill to fight obesity! Source London (PTI): Tart and tangy with an underlying sweetness, grapefruit has a juiciness which rivals that of the ever popular orange and sparkles with many of the same health promoting benefits. And, now researchers are on track to develop a pill from a chemical compound in grapefruit, which they claim would help obese people shed the flab and diabetics control their blood sugar levels. Researchers at University of Western Ontario have found that naringenin, the chemical compound that gives grapefruit its bitter taste, has revolutionary effect on the liver making it burn fat instead of storing it after a meal. According to them, this means that without having to change diets or cut out particular foods, a dose of naringenin could prevent weight gain and even help to lose it as well as help those having diabetes to control blood sugar levels. Lead researcher Murray Huff said: "The study shows naringenin, through its insulin-like properties, corrects many of the metabolic disturbances linked to insulin resistance and represents a promising approach for metabolic syndrome." They have based their findings on an analysis of tests which were carried out on mice -- two groups of rodents were both fed the equivalent of a Western diet to speed up their "metabolic syndrome", the process leading to Type 2 diabetes

Google India Launches Voice-based Internet Search On Mobiles
savramesh posted a topic in General Technical Discussion
Source Google has launched a free voice-based mobile internet search facility in India that has been built entirely by the internet search giant’s India engineering team. Currently available only to the estimated 400,000 Blackberry cellphone users, the company hopes to extend this facility to other handsets by the end of the year. The voice-based mobile search throws up results similar to a PC-based search query. A user can log on to the internet on his/her mobile, open the Google search page, and ask for a particular location, pizza joint, taxi stand or florist while driving a vehicle. Simply speaking the word “weather” into the phone, for instance, would throw up the top results. A couple of months earlier, Google India had also launched an SMS-based search in Hindi and Telegu in cities like Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The mobile internet-based voice search, however, is currently available only in English. Right now, Google is struggling to reconcile India’s variegated accents and pronunciation with the search engines. “Accents are indeed a problem, and we are working towards improving the application,” said Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India. For its SMS-based “voice search”, Google uses a combination of an automated voice recognition engine and operators to provide this facility. To make the service faster and better, it is also experimenting with voice recognition technology, which will ensure 24-hour support. The company plans to extend the technology to other cities once it is confident of the quality of its speech recognition technology “in any region of the country”. Meanwhile, as handsets and data plans get cheaper and the number of mobile internet users grows, Google India is gradually moving its focus away from just SMS to other value-added services (VAS) like social networking, Google Maps and voice-based internet-based search on mobiles, according to Goel. The logic is simple. Mobiles (slightly over 415 million) outnumber personal computers (PCs — slightly over 30 million) in India. On the social networking front, “one out of 10 mobile internet users use Orkut in India. The users are primarily in the age group of 19 to 25,” said Goel, adding that Orkut “is the largest source of photo uploads in India. Many users upload photos from Orkut to YouTube (another Google property)”. The Google Maps application, on the other hand, provides a cheaper alternative to GPS or global positioning system-loaded devices. Unlike GPS, which uses satellites to guide users, Google Maps uses mobile operators’ cellphone IDs (from towers) to help users identify locations, especially in cities. Google also hopes to be a catalyst in the dialogue between device manufacturers and carriers to foster the development of Android (its open software platform which any handset manufacturer can use) phones in India.” Pricing is the key to Android’s success in India. While pricing is the prerogative of each handset manufacturer, the Rs 10,000 figure is a sweet spot. This should foster data usage and growth of mobile internet,” asserts Goel. -

Techtree News Staff, Jul 16, 2009 1457 hrs IST The security flaw affects HTC-made handsets running Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 No, we're not trying to spread panic here. But according to a recent report by The Register, that HTC-made Windows Mobile laden device of yours might be susceptible to wireless sniffing via Bluetooth. The security flaw affects HTC-made handsets running Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1. The flaw is caused by a bug in the FTP stack implementation by HTC on these phones. What a potential "attacker" can do using this flaw is to gain access to the phone's shared folders. According to Microsoft, this flaw affects only select HTC made phones because of the third party Bluetooth driver developed by HTC. To be specific, the attacker will need to gain authentication and authorization rights and then use tools to gain access to parent directories. The need for authorization for the attack to "work" actually makes things a lot safer but it still remains vulnerable with sophisticated techniques like sniffing the Bluetooth pairing, cracking the link key or spoofing the MAC address can still make the flaw "work". The bug was first noticed in February and as of now, there seems to be no patch available to fix this one.

TRAI wants telcos to bear number portability cost Source NEW DELHII: The Telecom regulator TRAI wants service providers to bear the cost of supporting mobile number portability, a move which operators say is heavily loaded against them and will benefit the MNP operators only. The regulator has sought stakeholders' opinion through a consultation paper by tomorrow on MNP charges, which will decide what the customer has to pay. “It therefore follows that the recipient operator shall not charge any additional fee for porting-in the mobile number of the subscriber other than the 'porting charge',” according to the consultation paper. This porting charge shall not be more than the “per port (of) transaction charge” to be paid by the operator to the MNP service provider, which will be determined by TRAI after the consultation process, the paper says. The regulator has said if an operator does not give its response by July 17, it will be presumed that it (the operator) agrees with the suggestions. Some GSM operators have said this will benefit MNP operators. Syniverse and Telcordia-backed MNP Interconnect are the two managers of mobile number portability (MNP) in the country. - PTI

Ratan Tata to hand over first Nano key tomorrow Source NEW DELHI: Five years after his promise to build a people's car, Ratan Tata will hand over the key of his dream project - the Nano - to its first customer on Friday. From the birth of the dream in 2003, to its launch in 2008 and finally its delivery in 2009, the Nano's journey has been anything but smooth. The car, first showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo last year, was at the centre of much controversy as its proposed plant site in West Bengal became a rallying point for Mamata Banerjee and her party to gain political mileage. The controversy surrounding the site led Ratan Tata to abandon Singur and shift the Nano's production to Gujarat. But the overwhelming support for Tata's dream car was evident when the booking opened early this year. Despite the slowdown in the auto sector, the car attracted over 2.05 lakh bookings. In the first lot over 1.55 lakh cars would be delivered and the first one lakh will be sold at the announcement price of Rs 1 lakh, making it the cheapest four-wheels in the world. Tata had earlier said that 'a promise is a promise' and keeping his promise he would hand over the first car tomorrow at the price-protected rate. The company intends to deliver the first one lakh cars by March 2010. The selection process for the next lot of 55,021 cars has also been done. The Nano, with a 623-cc rear-engine car and a fuel economy of over 23 km per litre, has cost over Rs 2,000 crore to build. The car carries a price range of Rs 1.23 lakh to Rs 1.72 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the three different variants. At present, the car is rolled out from its Pantnagar facility, which has an annual capacity of 50,000 units.

Burning Sony Dvd-rw In Lg Dvd Writer Using Nero
savramesh posted a topic in General Technical Discussion
I am using LG DVD writer for the last three years without any issues. Yesterday first time i bought a DVD-RW [sony 1x-2x compatible]. I was burning a file @ 2x speed. it took more than 10 mins and alerted "Burning process failed".. when i browse that DVD it was empty but properties showed no free space. i tried to erase it failed.. then i restarted PC and tried to erase using Nero, it was successful. But i got the same error when i try to burn again.. other issues with this empty DVD-RW is when i put it in drive, it will take 10-15 mins to read .. sometimes erase fails, sometimes erases., but never success in burning.. i am able to burn dvd's, cd's etc.. only problem with this RW.. is it because of 1x-2x compatibility ?? -

Techtree News Staff, Jul 15, 2009 1814 hrs IST The service is not available for folks outside U.S Google Android and RIM BlackBerry phone owners will enjoy better call management with Google's Voice service starting today. Google Voice is Google's next novel service that allows managing several phone numbers with one unique number and also converts voicemails to emails. The invite-only registration has been open to all. However, the service is not available to folks outside U.S. Vincent Paquet, senior product manager of Google Voice, told CNET that all Google Voice users who own Android or BlackBerry handsets would be able to user the service directly from their handsets today onwards. However, iPhone owners will have to wait for the iPhone version of Google Voice, which is being held for unknown reasons. Google Voice was introduced in March this year and recently, Google was reported for booking a million numbers for this service. A single Google Voice number allows users to use a single number in lieu of their home, work or cell phone numbers and also get voicemails messages in form of text transcripts in mail. Android based handset owners will be able to download the Google Voice App from Marketplace. BlackBerry owners will have to get the app from Google instead of their App World. On number portability, Paquet noted that their experience hasn't been quite up to Google's standards and has been limited to carrier-to-carrier ports.
