Sistema Shyam to launch CDMA services in Jharkahnd Economic Times 4 Jul 2009, 2117 hrs IST RANCHI: Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTS), a JV between Russian mobile operator Sistema and India’s Shyam Group, is likely to launch its CDMA services this month in Jharkhand. It will be the eighth telco to start operations in the state. Existing mobile operators are state-owned BSNL, Bharti Airtel, RCom, Tata Tele, Idea, Aircel and Vodafone. They together have over 70 lakh subscribers in the state. Sistema-Shyam recently launched CDMA mobile operations in Bihar under the MTS brand, and likely to launch operations in Jharkhand 'very soon', said a state government source. The Bihar launch marked the sixth circle of operation after the launch of services in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rajasthan and recently West Bengal. As of May 2009, SSTS has over 1 million users spread in Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Kerala and in West Bengal (including Kolkata). The subscribers’ base growth in Rajasthan has been 8.5 % - 12% per month, starting from the network launch on September 30, 2008. The Tata Teleservices, on the other hand, is also planning to launch its GSM service under the brand 'Tata DOCOMO' in Jharkhand in the next about two months, said a source. Tata DOCOMO has already launched its services in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Orissa. It's CDMA service is already in operation in the state where it has more than 6 lakh subscribers. -

Now, Dial 95... For Mobile Numbers!
savramesh replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
BSNL, MTNL drop '95' group dialling across the country Business Standard July 4, 2009, 0:36 IST State-owned telecom majors Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) have discontinued the group dialling facility across all telecom circles in the country. The move spells disaster for the already struggling landline phone segment, which has been recording a negative subscriber growth quarter on quarter. The discontinuation follows allocation of the group dialling code — ‘95’ — to private mobile service providers like Aircel Cellular, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications for their GSM operations. Under group dialling, a BSNL subscriber could make calls up to 200 km from landlines by pre-fixing the code ‘95’ code to the number, which would be treated local calls and not as STD calls. MTNL, which has operations only in Mumbai and Delhi circles, had permitted users to make calls between these metros with the ‘95’ prefix at local call rates, not taking into consideration that these were inter-circle calls. “The allocation of the ‘95’ code to private operators threw BSNL’s and MTNL’s group dialling services out of gear, as it resulted in a lot of confusion, over-lapping and wrong number dialling. Following this, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) sought discontinuation of these services by the public sector units,” a top telecom ministry official said. When contacted, BSNL and MTNL officials confirmed the development, but added that the services have been moved to the ‘0’ code level. In addition, both the public sector units are maintaining the group dialling rates. “For example, a user can call Delhi from a Mumbai landline number using the STD code ‘011’, for which local call rates will still be charged. BSNL would also be charging the same rate for calls up to 200 km, even though ‘0’ has to be pre-fixed before the numbers,” an MTNL official said. However, analysts see this as a death knell for the landline segment and, like many foreign countries, India could emerge as a place with ‘mobile-only homes’. According to Trai data, the ever-declining wireline subscriber base fell further to 37.66 million in May 2009 from 37.81 million in April 2009. -
NDTV Profit Friday, July 03, 2009 Telecom majors like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communication, MTNL and BSNL have battled in the direct-to-home space and the action is moving to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service. With revenues per user for fixed line telephony falling every year, telecoms want to provide additional value-added services to their customers and IPTV seems to be the next big thing. While MTNL and BSNL together have around 20,000 users, sources at Reliance Communications claim that it will launch with a customer base of around 15,000 users. Mahesh Prasad, president of Reliance Communications, said, "We have completed the pilot and you will hear from us soon." Experts say with the entry of RCom and with more players like Videocon planning to enter the space, there is bound to be a price war and the existing IPTV service providers are already gearing up. BSNL and MTNL IPTV set-top-boxes are available on rental basis while Airtel users are charged around Rs 4,000 for the set-top-box. Sources tell NDTV that RCom plans to charge Rs 7,000 per set-top-box, but with new entrants, even the old players are looking at increasing rates. Industry players feel that pricing is one of the major drawbacks of IPTV service, but the cost can only come down once the volumes don't increase. K S Choudhary, MD of Aksh Optifibre, said, “IPTV can provide a lot of value added services, which can benefit customers. Till these issues like video on demand, interactive education, a delayed relay of programming are not addressed, the real power of IPTV will not be felt. The regulatory issue should take care of this so that implementation is easier for IPTV. Meanwhile, telecoms are looking at delivering interactive video services over existing infrastructure. The operators and content providers are coming together to deliver value added services, but the industry is still evolving standards. Will IPTV take off in India—is the big question.

Delhi Hc Asks Dot To Consider S Tel Application
savramesh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Livemint Fri, Jul 3 2009. 5:10 PM IST Rejecting it, the high court said,“the DoT could not be allowed to arbitrarily change the cut-off date and that too without any justifiable reasons” New Delhi: Delhi high court has quashed the department of telecom notification fixing 25 September, 2007 as cut-off date for granting telecom licenses bundled with startup 2G spectrum. The court at the same time asked the DoT to consider Chennai-based S Tel’s application to start operations in 16 circles. Justice G S Sistani held that the DoT could not arbitrarily fix a cut off date for capping the number for licenses bundled startup spectrum and quashed the press note issued on 10 October, 2008 regarding this. “The respondent has failed to satisfy the court as to how any public interest would be affected in the matter. The impugned press release dated 10, October, 2008 is quashed,” Justice Sistani said. Earlier, the deadline for allocation of license was 1 October, 2007. However, in January 2008, DoT had amended the criteria and said that due to a large number of applications, requests prior to 25 September, 2007 would be considered only. Rejecting it, the court said,“the DoT could not be allowed to arbitrarily change the cut-off date and that too without any justifiable reasons.” The court’s direction came over a petition filed by Chennai-based S Tel, whose application for license in 16 circles was turned down as it had applied on 28 September, 2007, three days after the cut-off date. The court directed DoT to consider the application of S-Tel submitted on 28, September, 2007 for operations in 16 circles. “The DoT is directed to consider the applications of S Tel on 28 September, 2007,” the court. The court also pulled up DoT over taking contrary stand against Telcom Regulatory Authority of India recommendation. “On one hand DoT has accepted the recommendation of the Trai in the impugned press note, but acted contrary there to by amending the cut-off date and thus placed a cap on the number of same providers,” the court said. It also rejected DoT’s argument that the date was advanced keeping in view a large number of applicants. “It is without any force in view of the fact that neither any justification was rendered during argument nor any justification has been rendered in the counter affidavit as to what is the effect of the receipt of large number of applications in view of the fact that a recommendation of the Trai suggests no cap on the number of access service provider in any service,” the court said. -

Economic Times 2 Jul 2009, 1610 hrs IST WELLINGTON: New evidence shows that if global warming melts the West Antarctic ice sheet, sea levels around the world could rise by up to five metres, a New Zealand scientist said Thursday. Tim Naish, director of Victoria University's Antarctic Research Centre in Wellington, said the ice sheet was Antarctica's most vulnerable element and was expected to melt first, along with Greenland. "Polar ice sheets have grown and collapsed at least 40 times over the past five million years, causing major sea-level fluctuations," he said in a statement issued by the university. The most recent "interglacial" period between collapses had lasted 10,000 years, during which time global sea-level and atmospheric temperatures remained more or less constant, and human civilization flourished, Naish said. He said much of his research focused on an international drilling programme in the sedimentary layers of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which analyzed how it behaved at a time when the world was warmer. "We know that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were slightly above what they are now, and the earth was two to three degrees warmer. When the West Antarctica ice sheet collapsed numerous times, it raised sea levels by up to 10 metres. "In the past, these climate changes were happening naturally, but now we've accelerated this process, the greenhouse gases are rising and temperatures are rising faster than they ever have in the past," Naish said. "It's one of the big issues of our time and it will have a profound effect on our future society."

Techtree News Staff, Jul 01, 2009 1602 hrs IST Has its eyes set on the mid and low-end segment Motorola, in its latest strategy, seems to be concentrating on the low to mid-range smartphone segment where it is expected to bring out a slew of new devices in the near future. This is quite a change from Motorola's earlier strategy of hitting it with one device, like it had done with the Razr back in 2005. Motorola hasn't really been able to compete with the likes of the Apple iPhone and RIM in the high-end segment, and now seems to have set its eyes on the lower-end segment where it will have the assurance of getting greater margins from sales. The smartphones will also use the Android OS which is again, free. The aim is also to increase the company's dwindling market share that has been on a constant slide over the past year or so. Additionally, in these times of recession, the company thinks it makes sense to concentrate more on the mid and low-end segment that involves lesser capital to develop and manufacture newer products. Motorola expects to increase the number of units shipped by 20% with this strategy. Could this be the turnaround the company desperately needs? We'll know it soon enough!
