  1. Source NEW DELHI: In a bid to make booking tickets more convenient, Railways are mulling introduction of mobile vans with ticketing facility The vans, up-linked to satellite, would be issuing railway tickets in reserved and unreserved categories primarily in rural and remote corners of the country. "We are examining a proposal for launching mobile van service for issuing tickets at certain places," a senior Railway Ministry official said. "The purpose behind the system is to reach out every corner of the country. Facilities would be made available for not only reserved tickets but also for unreserved tickets," the official said. Railways had already announced its plan to book tickets through mobile phones. A pilot project for this is to be launched in Mumbai shortly. "The modalities are being worked out for launching the pilot project," he said. In order to bring transparency, Indian Railway is also planning to display the status of the availability of tickets for reservation for important trains at the ticket counters. Meanwhile, efforts are on to link all stations selling tickets across the country with the computerised system. Railways have finalised a plan to add more reservation counters across the country in order to help passengers get tickets easily. As per an estimate, there are about 1,800 such counters across various zones. As per the plan, about 500 more counters would be added and a decision in this regard is likely to be made in the upcoming Railway Budget. The idea is to decongest the existing ticket counters so that people do not face difficulty in getting tickets, said the official. Railways are likely to focus on passenger amenities besides revenue generation in the budget this time.
  2. Will BlackBerry see red? The Hindu Sunday, Jun 28, 2009 BANGALORE: Technology is a great leveller, they say. If that holds water, this ambitious attempt by a Madurai-based company to take on the global smart phone segment is likely to give market leader BlackBerry — shot to international fame when President Barack Obama refused to let go of his beloved gadget — a run for its money. Developed and patented by AJ Square Consultancy, Red Chery is a mobile application service that offers data streaming technology in mobile phones, at no less than one-tenth of the existing price. A registered user will be able to receive emails from private services such as Gmail or Hotmail and corporate accounts, besides synchronising address books, alerts and even retrieving this information later. It also has enterprise solutions like CRM preloaded. The company claims that the product, to be released in a few weeks, will be cost-effective and make the pricey services affordable to the average cell phone user. So, is cost the only USP that this rather wittily named product can boast of? Much more significant is the freedom it offers: in terms of being device, platform and network independent. Further, it caters to the low-end mobile user. It works on devices that have MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile) as a minimum requirement, many of which start in the price range of Rs.3,000. “Compare this with the largely hand-set locked BlackBerry in which the device alone can cost up to ten times the amount, and it appears we are on to something truly revolutionary,” says Chairman and Managing Director of Red Chery Boaz Augustin. “Revolutionary” He told The Hindu that this “revolutionary product” would be the first step towards the larger goal of Global Service Amalgamation, a jargon used to describe the concept of bringing diverse services such as healthcare or education or email into one platform. “And equally important, for us, is accessibility. Our target is the mass, as opposed to the Crest. Even as we await 3G, in India even 2G technology is barely used effectively. Affordability could change all that.” With the telecom sphere standing on the threshold of 3G technology, the 50-million-strong GPRS domestic user market is big. Red Chery services will be simple and accessible, the company claims. You get connected; register for a global control panel for the service on your handset, complete verification and you’re ready to go. While the product may carve a fresh market for itself, will it be able to eat a slice of BlackBerry’s pie or that of its flashy competitors like Nokia or HTC? “Being an Indian company we understand the market better. Also, global consumer psychology is slowly transforming from user experience towards solutions,” Mr. Augustin explains. On the security issue, Red Chery will not face too many problems since the servers will be home-based. (The Department of Telecom had taken on BlackBerry when it found it could not monitor its servers). For its corporate clients, Internet Data Centres will be localised.

  6. Feel so sad for all the passengers including the extraordinary photographer, who kept his cool even in his last moments of life and took this photo. Hats off to him!!! LET ALL DEPARTED SOUL REST IN PEACE The world saw the disappearance of an A330 Air Frane during a trans Atlantic flight between Rio to Paris. Very ironic that a day before I got a mail of the photos taken a a passenger on a flight mins after a mid air collision, and mins before the crash of the said aircraft Two shots taken inside the plane before it crashed. Unbelievable! Photos taken inside the GOL B 737 aircraft that was involved in a mid air collision and crashed...... A B737 had a mid air collision with the Embraer Legacy while cruising at 35,000 feet over South America. The Embraer Legacy, though seriously damaged with the winglet ripped off, managed to make a landing at a nearby airstrip in the midst of the Amazon jungle. The crew and passengers of the Embraer Legacy had no idea what they had hit. The B737 however crashed, killing all crew and passengers on board. The two photos attached were apparently taken by one of the passengers in the B737, just after the collision and before the aircraft crashed. The photos were retrieved from the camera's memory stick. You will never get to see photos like this. In the first photo, there is a gaping hole in the fuselage through which you can see the tailplane and vertical fin of the aircraft. In the second photo, one of the passengers is being ****ed out of the gaping hole. These photos were found in a digital Casio Z750, amidst the remains in Serra do Cachimbo. Although the camera was destroyed, the Memory Stick was recovered. Investigating the serial number of the camera, the owner was identified as Paulo G. Muller, an actor of a theatre for children known in the outskirts of Porto Alegre. It can be imagined that he was standing during the impact with the Embraer Legacy and during the turbulence, he managed to take these photos, just seconds after the tail loss the aircraft plunged. So the camera was found near the cockpit. The structural stress probably ripped the engines away, diminishing the falling speed, protecting the electronic equipment but not unfortunately the victims. Paulo Muller leaves behind two daughters, Bruna and Beatriz.
  7. 2 Photos Taken Inside A330 Air France While Crashing

Search for Air France black boxes likely to go on Source Sao Paulo (AP): Brazil called off the search for more bodies and debris from the Air France jet that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean but an American officer said the search for the black boxes would likely continue for at least another 16 days. Brazilian and French searchers have recovered large chunks of debris and 51 bodies from Air France Flight 447, which disappeared with 228 people on board late May 31. Brazil's air force and navy on Friday ended their search for more bodies or debris. ``The reason for this is the impossibility of finding survivors or bodies, which has always been the main focus of our search efforts,'' Brazilian Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz said at news conference. But Munhoz said the search for the black boxes would continue ``coordinated by France.'' Experts say the black boxes may be key to deciding what brought the airliner down. And signals from the voice and data recorders begin to fade after about 30 days. ``We'll have a better idea July 1 on how much longer we'll go,'' said U.S. Air Force Col. Willie Berges, the Brazil-based commander of the American military forces supporting the search. Berges said searchers were likely to keep going 12 to 15 days past the 30-day mark of the crash. A French nuclear submarine and two French-contracted ships towing U.S. Navy listening devices are trolling a search area with a radius of 50 miles (80 kilometers) off Brazil's northeastern coast where it is believed the plane crashed. The black boxes send out an electronic tapping sound that can be heard up to 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) away. With the recorders still missing, accident investigators have focused on automated messages sent by the plane minutes before it lost contact. One indicates the plane was receiving incorrect speed information from external instruments, which could destabilize the plane's control systems. Experts have suggested those external instruments might have iced over. Air France has now replaced the monitors, called Pitot tubes, on all its Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft. On Thursday, U.S. safety officials said they were investigating two incidents in which airspeed and altitude indications in the cockpits of A330 planes may have malfunctioned. The aircraft are the same type as the Air France plane that crashed. In both cases the planes landed safely, and no one was injured, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement.

  21. Source Bloomberg has reported that Intel has gained Nokia has a customer for their mobile processors. Intel has been looking to enter into the mobile device market with their chips. Bloomberg reported that the two companies could announce this deal as early as today. Intel is currently scheduled to hold a press conference to make an important announcement. Nokia is the world’s largest mobile phone maker while Intel is the world’s dominating Processor Company. -------------------- Nokia + Intel = very good combination, what do you think ?
  22. Intel and Nokia in new mobile device development pact news 24 June 2009 Source Intel, the world's largest chip maker and Nokia, the world's largest mobile handset maker have joined hands to develop a new class of Intel architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset architectures. For Intel, this collaboration is a major breakthrough in the mobile handset chip market, which has been controlled over the years by Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. Earlier this February, Intel managed to get LG, the world's third largest mobile handset maker as its customer for its Intel Atom core chip, a faster processor which is targeted at mobile Internet devices. Nokia, which has 40 per cent of the world's market share for mobile phones, and Intel, whose microprocessors run more than 80 per cent of the world's fastest supercomputers, will jointly develop a new set of mobile handset chips which will combine the performance of powerful computers with high-bandwidth mobile broadband communications and Internet connectivity. Both companies are said to be aiming todevelop a new mobile platform beyond today's smartphones, notebooks and netbooks, that would enable the development of a variety of innovative hardware, software and mobile internet services Under the arrangement, the companies said they would work together on chip design and open-source software. The two companies have signed an agreement that will enable Intel to license Nokia's HSPA / 3G modem technologies with the aim of developing advanced mobile computing solutions that deliver a powerful and flexible computing experience, combining the best-in-class 3GPP modem technology with the high performance and low power consumption of future Intel Architecture-based platforms. The two market leaders say they expect many innovations to result from this collaboration over time, as they will collaborate in several open source mobile Linux software projects. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA / 3G modem IP license for use in future products as the Nokia modem license complements Intel's broadband wireless technologies and will enable the company to extend chipset solutions incorporating Nokia's modem technologies across its mobility offerings in the future. Intel will use its Linux-based operating system called Moblin, designed to function on portable devices, while Nokia will use its Maemo, which is also a Linux-based operating system for developing of new mobile computing devices. "This Intel and Nokia collaboration unites and focuses many of the brightest computing and communications minds in the world, and will ultimately deliver open and standards-based technologies, which history shows drive rapid innovation, adoption and consumer choice," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel Corporation's senior vice president and general manager, Ultra Mobility Group. "With the convergence of the internet and mobility as the team's only barrier, I can only imagine the innovation that will come out of our unique relationship with Nokia. The possibilities are endless," he added. "Today's announcement represents a significant commitment to work together on the future of mobile computing, and we plan to turn our joint research into action," said Kai Öistämö, executive vice president, devices, Nokia. He said that both companies will explore new ideas in designs, materials and displays that will go far beyond devices and services on the market today and the collaboration will be compelling not only for both companies, but also for the industries, partners and consumers
