Dot May Ring In Up To Twelve Operators For 3g In Some Circles
savramesh replied to savramesh's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Mobile operators differ on hike in 3G spectrum base price Business Standard Saturday, Jun 20, 2009 Mobile operators are divided on the consensus reached in the government to increase the base price for 3G auctioning to Rs 4,040 crore. Earlier, the base price for auctioning ranged from as low as Rs 1,020 crore to Rs 2,040 crore. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the body representing GSM players, has said the auction process for 3G is expected to fail if the government does not come out with a clear 2G spectrum allocation and pricing policy before it goes for 3G auctioning. “The government needs to settle the 2G policy, before it goes for auctioning 3G spectrum, as it is very clear that these services cannot be offered independently but will be an overlay over 2G. If that does not happen, there will be few takers for 3G,” says T V Ramachandran, secretary-general of COAI. Ramachandran also says the government, by looking at hiking the base price substantially, is making 3G more unattractive. “On the one hand, government says they want broadband expansion through wireless, but by fixing such a high price it will not be possible to increase its penetration at all,” he added. The Department of Telecommunications, however, feels a final decision on 2G spectrum policy should be taken only after the 3G auction is completed. Their logic is based on the recommendation of a committee to look into allocation of spectrum, which suggested the pricing of 3G spectrum should be related to that of 2G spectrum. The GSM operators’ view is echoed by the association of CDMA operators. Says S C Khanna of Association of United Telecom Services Providers of India: “We expect the right price should have been Rs 2,000 crore. Any hike in the base price will make it totally unaffordable to the masses and only a few cities can afford the service.” However, many of the newer mobile players, who have just started their service or are about to roll out, say the price is not that unattractive. “It’s a reasonable price, about two and a half times more than a pan-Indian 2G spectrum, and surely no way like what happened in Europe, where it was many times higher. I think there is enough scope to offer services at attractive tariffs and build up volumes. After all, you have better margins in data than voice,” said a director in a leading telco which is about to start its service across the country. Agrees Naresh Singh, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner: “I don’t see doubling of 3G spectrum auction prices as a deterrent, as most of the existing players and new operators would still aggressively bid for the 3G spectrum, as this would be the game changer for the industry. Most of the companies are close to launching advanced data services, with some already announcing aggressive tariffs, for which 3G is a necessity. More important, the prices are still on the lower side, when compared to international markets like Malaysia, South Korea or Italy, where the base prices were much higher.” -

Nokia Siemens Networks To Upgrade Idea Cellular Network
savramesh posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Business Standard Friday, Jun 19, 2009 Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Network will upgrade the existing mobile services network of Idea Cellular to enable it to carry high-end data — GPRS services. The services will be enabled by Nokia Siemens Networks’ GPRS (general packet radio service) technology and Unified Charging Solution (UCS evolve), NSN said in a statement. Idea Cellular, the country's fifth largest telecom operator, is upgrading its network in 22 areas to tap the lucrative value added data services market. By March 2010, IDEA subscribers will be able to enjoy multimedia messaging, email, web browsing, online music and other innovative mobile services, it said. It will add GPRS capability to 10 IDEA telecom service areas while the existing GPRS capability in 12 other areas will be expanded. "The value added services market in India holds tremendous potential. The greater opportunity lies in data services, and in expanding our capabilities and service portfolio in this area. "The right technology foundation is fundamental to our success, and it needs to include not just a method of delivering services, but of monetizing them effectively," IDEA Cellular Chief Technology Officer Anil Tandan said. As part of the project, Nokia Siemens Networks has also designed and will implement a charging solution that will enable Idea to use a single system across these locations for the new services for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers. -

Telecom Sector Earnings May Cross $30 Bn By 2013
savramesh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Economic Times 19 Jun 2009, 0054 hrs IST NEW DELHI: Continuing its growth trajectory, the Indian telecom sector is expected to generate revenues of over $30 billion by 2013, according to global analyst firm Gartner. The country’s telecom subscriber base is expected to cross the 770-million mark by 2013. India has over 450 million telecom users at present. “The Indian mobile industry has now moved out of its hyper growth mode, but it will continue to grow at double-digit rates for the next three years as operators focus on rural parts of the country,” Gartner senior research analyst Madhusudan Gupta said. As per Gartner, India’s telecom market is unlikely to surpass China as the largest telecom market by 2013 and would retain its position as the second-largest market in the world. The mobile penetration in the country is also expected to reach 63.5% by 2013, up from 38.7% at present, according to Gartner. Growth is largely expected to come from telecom operators increasing their focus on the rural market, local consumer durable and electronic companies entering the domestic mobile handset segment, and decline in handset prices. The increased adoption of value-added services (VAS) will also stimulate growth. While the bulk of revenues for telcos would be generated from voice services, data usage will grow at a faster rate, Gartner said. With the entry of new operators in the Indian telecom market, it is expected that voice tariffs will continue to fall. Also, expansion in rural circles is expected to pull down average revenue per user (ARPU). The number of people with prepaid connections would also increase to contribute about 96% of the total subscriber base by 2013, due to increased adoption in rural circles. Currently, about 93% of the users own a pre-paid connection. The churn rate is also expected to go up in India as more players enter the fray and the government allows mobile number portability (MNP). MNP will allow users to switch their telecom service provider while retaining their mobile number. -

Indiatimes Infotech The global downturn has witnessed many a causalities in terms of jobs. In fact very few (if any), companies have remained unscathed from layoffs in the past few months. Along with raining pinkslips, the economic turmoil also saw technology companies pulling plug on many of their services. Launched with lot of fanfare and noise, these services were given a silent burial. With cost cutting being the slowdown survival mantra, scissors running across the companies ran in many cases also ran on products and services. Google, Microsoft, Nokia and many other technology giants killed services which once mirrored their growing ambitions and empire. Here are some of the technology services and products that became a victim of the ongoing recession. -------- The technology demises includes Microsoft's once-mighty multimedia encyclopedia Encarta. The company recently announced that it is getting out of the encyclopedia business, ending its long-standing Encarta product. In a posting on its Web site, Microsoft said that the move reflected the change in the way people use reference material. Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years," Microsoft said. "However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past. As part of Microsoft's goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources for today's consumer, it has made the decision to exit the Encarta business." Encarta was launched in 1993 as competition for traditional reference books such as those offered by Encyclopedia Britannica. Encarta was originally available for purchase as a multimedia computer resource in DVD-ROM or CD-ROM formats and eventually became available online on a subscription basis. Encarta's popularity started fading after the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation launched Wikipedia online in 2001. While Wikipedia lets users continually update or refine entries, improvements suggested to Encarta must pass muster with editors before eventually being incorporated into the database.

Tata Teleservices Promises India's Fastest Broadband Service
savramesh posted a topic in Other Broadband Discussion
The Hindu Wednesday, June 17, 2009 : 1520 Hrs New Delhi (IANS): Tata Teleservices has teamed up with ECI Telecom, an Israel-based networking infrastructure solutions provider, to offer India's fastest broadband access network till date, the Indian telecom operator said Wednesday. In a statement, Tata Teleservices said ECI's network solution would support a connectivity speed of up to 18 megabit per second (Mbps), a unit to measure broadband speed. This would make it the fastest connectivity on offer in the country so far. In April, Airtel launched broadband services supporting a speed of 16 Mbps. ECI's solution will also enable Tata Teleservices to offer applications such as IPTV, video-on-demand, high speed broadband Internet, voice over internet protocol and other bandwidth intensive services. "ECI's expertise and in-depth understanding of broadband access solutions were key factors in our decision to choose ECI for this important project," Tata Teleservices president and chief technology officer A.G. Rao said. ECI has provided Tata Teleservices with various network infrastructure solutions for over five years. -
To spearhead its push into Internet services, Nokia put users in charge when it opened its networking site Mosh in 2007. Less than two years later, the world's top cellphone maker, decided to put an end to it, killing a site that made it easy for people to post and share content with others and attracted a wide audience around the globe. According to the mail sent by Nokia to MOSH users, the users will be redirected to the Ovi Store if caught trying to access Mosh. Thanks to its unmoderated content, Mosh is said to have become a pain for of sorts for Nokia. The site led to legal hassles for Nokia over copyright violations and pornographic content. The Ovi Store, on the other hand, will be a fully moderated, Nokia controlled environment, like the Apple App Store and the likes. ----- The US-based handset maker Motorola too figures in the list of companies that are closing services. Motorola recently announced that it is shutting its music application store -- Motomusic -- in India. The company said, "We are streamlining our portfolio and will be introducing Android-based smartphones that will allow us to give consumers and customers access to a broad ecosystem of experiences. This means Motomusic and Soundbuzz are no longer core to our market strategy," However, the Motomusic service in China would not be impacted, it added. Last year, the handset maker had launched its portal Motomusic store in India offering more than 3,50,000 tracks and other multimedia contents like wallpapers and videos for download. Motomusic India has put up a notice asking users to download all the songs purchased, back them up and redeem any vouchers and prepaid coupons before July 15. "The last day of operation for the store is July 15, 2009. From midnight of July 15, the store will not be available for purchases or redemptions and your account and previous purchases will not be accessible," it added. However, its rivals are gearing up to launch similar application-based shops in the country.
