Apple Slashes Iphone Price; Unveils New Avatar
savramesh posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
The Hindu Wednesday, Jun 10, 2009 SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc. has slashed the entry price for its much talked about iPhone by half and lowered the prices of some laptops by as much as $300, the company’s first dramatic price cuts since the recession began a year and a half ago. With its legendary founder and CEO Steve Jobs absent until his medical leave is over at the end of June, Apple’s biggest unveiling at its annual conference here for software developers on Monday night was a brand new model of the iPhone, the 3G S. It looks the same but sports a faster processor, longer battery life, an internal compass, a video camera and a photo camera with better resolution and auto-focus. A 16-gigabyte version of the 3G S will cost $199 and a 32-gigabyte version $299. The 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G, which came out last year amid great fanfare worldwide, will now cost $99, down from $199. When the iPhone made its debut two years ago, eager Apple fans had to shell out $499 for a 4-gigabyte version and $599 for 8 gigs. Apple is known for ending events with a last-minute surprise, leading to some anticipation that Jobs might make a cameo at Monday’s two-hour presentation. But he did not take the stage and Apple’s top marketing executive Philip Schiller exited without uttering the company’s signature line that there would be “one more thing”. The latest iPhones go on sale on June 19, just as Apple faces tougher competition from the likes of Research in Motion, the makers of Blackberry, and Palm Inc. This past Saturday Palm came out with a well-regarded iPhone rival, the $200 “Pre”. Industry analyst Michael Gartenberg said the new iPhone pricing breaks through an important barrier for consumers. It is likely to cause other smart phone makers to offer something similar, he said. “Every $100 you move down in consumer electronics brings in a lot more customers,” he said. “Ninety-nine dollars is a psychological price point, so that’s a real barrier to move through. It becomes something people can afford — it becomes an affordable luxury.” Schiller said in an interview that the $99 iPhone would reach people just joining the smart phone market. But lowering the price could be risky for Apple unless its new versions have enough appealing features to keep them selling briskly at higher prices. Apple had already announced other new features in the new software — such as the ability to cut, copy and paste text — and the ability for “tethering,” which means using the iPhone to connect a computer to the Internet. - AP -

Source The GPON system has already been deployed at a 3,000 unit complex in Noida Telecom Equipment Provider Ericsson is targeting 30 lakh subscribers in the next three years in bundling with telecom operators from their latest solution, Ericsson Fiber Access Solution, which powers households with fiber to the home (FTTH) services. The solution, which is based on the Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) system, has already been deployed at a 3,000 unit complex in Noida developed by real estate firm ATS Infrastructure. With the growing demand for high-speed broadband connectivity in the country, Ericsson had in May 2009 developed the country’s first commercial GPON-FTTH solution to provide the end-users with high-end data, television and communication services. GPON is a network architecture that brings fiber cabling and signals to the home using a point-to-multipoint scheme that enables a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises to provide high bandwidth. The consumers can choose a telecom operator of their choice. “In developed markets such as the US, the traffic demand for FTTH (fiber to the home) services have been going up tremendously. Seeing the same kinds of trends in India, we joined hands with telecom operators and I know they are looking at a few million solutions to be deployed in the next few years,” P Balaji, vice president of Ericsson India told Financial Chronicle. Ericsson operates on a revenue sharing business model with telecom operators for providing this solution. Radius Synergies, which provides technology services to real estate developers, has sold equipment (including fibres) to Ericsson for developing this solution for a one-time payment. The basic cost of providing this solution to a single household is around $1,000, while the revenues earnt per month per household would be around $50 (from television, broadband internet and television), said AK Singh, chairman and managing director, Radius Synergies. It would take three years to achieve break-even point per household in this manner, he added. The consumer has to pay a refundable amount of around Rs 5,000 for the equipment that provides the solution. Radius is in talks with other real estate players in the country for providing Ericsson’s solution in their residential properties.

Reuters India Fri Jun 12, 2009 2:50pm IST NEW DELHI (Reuters) - When it comes to banking, one immediately thinks of long queues, signing cheque books and ATMs not functioning -- irritants that make banking a tedious task. Not any more. Why go all the way to the bank when you can complete your transactions with the click of a button -- on your mobile phone. The mobile telephony market in India has seen unprecedented growth from 0.2 million subscribers in 1996 to 362.30 million as of January 2009. And with the number of cellphone users expected to grow at about 8 million per month, mobile banking may soon be the only possible way. "Over the next five years we except to see at least 90 percent of all banking customers using mobile banking in one form or the other," says Sai Narain, General Manager, Transaction Banking at Standard Chartered Bank. The advent of iMobile, a mobile banking application, is an innovation which offers offline banking services on the mobile phone. Around eight million customers of ICICI bank, India’s top private lender, have registered for mobile banking. "The use of mobile phones has added to the convenience and ease of banking allowing customers to visit the bank at any time of the day," a ICICI bank official said. Using the mobile phone, customers can access savings, demat, credit card and loan accounts. One could also use it to pay utility bills, check bank balance, book tickets or transfer funds. "So much of money gets transferred from one part of the country to the other through very traditional labour-intensive means like post offices etc., which are still not fully automated,” Sanjay Kapoor, Deputy CEO, Bharti Airtel told Reuters in an interview last month. Therefore, there is a big opportunity there. I believe over 50,000 crore rupees gets transferred every year," Kapoor said. Handsets supporting mobile banking are no different than what we use in our daily lives as most transactions take place via SMS or the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) menu. In case the customer has a low-end handset, he could use IVR to pay his bills or book tickets. One could do even more with a better handset. "He could even embed his debit card information on the mobile and use it to make payments," says Narain. Currently, banks impose a limit of 2,500 rupees per mobile transaction, subject to an overall cap of 5000 rupees per day per customer. SAFETY Mobile banking is gaining wider acceptability as it is convenient and fast but at the same time it has its own share of risks. Guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allow only banks licensed, supervised and with a physical presence in India to offer mobile banking services. Banks are also required to put in place risk mitigation measures like transaction limit, transaction velocity limit and fraud checks. While using the mobile to access your account, “One needs to just take basic precautions such as not to share personal details with any suspicious sites, not click links on e mails from unknown sender,” the ICICI bank official said The RBI has mandated certain authentication procedures for mobile banking, such as validation through a two-factor authentication, one of which is MPIN or any higher standard. In case something does go wrong, the customer should immediately get in touch with the bank and provide details of the transactions. "Based on the information provided, the bank will investigate the matter internally and update the customer with their findings and arrange for any reversals", says Narain. Bharti, Vodafone to bring new 'iPhone 3G S' to India in August Economic Times 11 Jun 2009, 2154 hrs IST NEW DELHI: India’s leading GSM telecom operators -- Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar -- are set to bring Apple’s latest iPhone, called iPhone 3G S, to India in August. The new iPhone 3G S, which offers faster data speeds, a new camera, video recording, compass and voice control, was unveiled in US earlier this week. In India, Apple has exclusive tie-ups with Bharti and Vodafone and this is one of the few markets where the US-based technology firm has a tie-up with two operators. Bharti and Vodafone jointly account for over 170 million of the over 400 million cellphone users in the country. Apple had issued a guidance, saying the iPhone 3G S would make its debut in India in August, but refused to specify the date and the pricing for the country. The guidance also added that the handset would be launched in 31 other countries in August. Additionally, as per information made public by Apple, the iPhone 3G S will go on sale in 10 countries, including the US on June 19, and another 32 countries in the month of July. Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar did not offer comments to a detailed query sent by ET. In India, the new iPhone from Apple is set to face competition from smartphones such as Nokia’s N97 and similar offerings from BlackBerry and Samsung. Another handset that can be a potential threat to Apple’s new product is the Palm’s Pre which has just hit the US market, but is currently not available in India. But, unlike handsets such as Nokia’s N97, the new iPhone 3G S will have a unique advantage as it has over 100,000 applications and also enjoys the support of the most vibrant and innovative developer community in this space. This implies, Apple’s product is more than just a technically superior handset, but more of a software platform with thousands of custom-made applications. However, the catch is that the earlier model of the iPhone’s India entry has been a huge failure both in terms of sales (due to an unviable distribution model) coupled with a steep price tag and poor advertising which resulted in the brand failing to connect with customers here. Also, customers in India who had followed Apple’s pricing globally during in other countries and believed that the iPhone would sport a similar price tag of $199 here were put off by the fact that they would have to shell out more than three time the amount to buy the product. Worse still, market watchers say that neither Apple nor Bharti and Vodafone Essar put in the efforts to explain the difference in market dynamics in India which led to the higher pricing here which left customers confused. Market watchers and analysts also say that Apple’s decision to go in with only Bharti and Vodafone Essar in India was flawed, especially considering that GSM operators here are not major players in the handset retail space. This is because, GSM players rarely bundle handsets and restrict such offering to the lower-end phones in non-urban and rural markets. For consumers, some of the new features that come with the iPhone 3G S include its ability to remember text that has been entered once, thereby eliminating the need to retype e-mail addresses, postal addresses or usernames, the digital compass which aids in navigation and a host of features that make it friendly for the disabled. Besides, it also comes with Apple’s own earphones along with a multi-button remote, but with a single control key and a mic. -
Govt Silent On Regularising Mobile Towers

PCNTDA starts drive against unauthorised mobile towers Times of india 12 Jun 2009, 0303 hrs IST, TNN PUNE: The Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority(PCNTDA) has launched a drive to dismantle unauthorised mobile towers within its limit. The PCNTDA administration had recently issued notices to around 25 persons who own buildings/plots where unauthorised mobile towers have been installed. One such tower has already been dismantled. Murlidhar Vedpathak, the PCNTDA's administrative officer, said, "Many people residing in the PCNTDA limits have installed mobile towers in their plots without seeking our permission. We had received complaints from the local residents about a mobile tower being set up at Plot No. 79 in Sector 16. The locals had objected to the erection of the tower in the area. We sent a stop-work notice to the plot owner. But despite the notice, the construction continued and was completed on Saturday. The plot owner claimed that the mobile company had obtained permission for constructing the tower.'' According to Vedpathak, the PCNTDA had not given the permission to set up the tower. And it was removed in three days. The expenses for dismantling the tower will be recovered from the owner, he said. On the mushrooming of unauthorised mobile towers, Vedpathak said, "The owners of the building or plot get high rentals from the telecom companies. And these companies are also on the lookout for places to set up towers for increasing their connectivity. In some cases, the owners have sought our permission, but even before getting out nod, they have installed the towers." According to a survey conducted by the PCNTDA, there are around 40 to 45 unauthorised towers in its limits. We have sent notices to 25 plot/building owners after receiving complaints from the public," said Vedpathak. The PCNTDA has warned that the power supply to the plots or buildings with unauthorised towers would be disconnected. The PCNTDA is planning to send a letter to the MSEDCL in this regard. The PCNTDA has given one-month time for dismantling the unauthorised towers. If the towers are not removed within this period, the PCNTDA will remove them. And the expenses incurred, including dismantling cost, police bandobast and transportation of debris, will be recovered from the owner, the notice states. -

Reliance Deactivates 36,000 Connections In J&k Fearing Security Threat
savramesh posted a topic in Reliance Communications
Press Trust of India / Jammu June 11, 2009, 13:20 IST Fearing security threat, Reliance mobile company has deactivated its over 36,000 connections in Jammu and Kashmir even as the state police continued its probe into the violation of guidelines in issuing SIM cards. "Reliance company has deactivated 36,000 connections and begun internal probe into issuance of mobile connections on the basis of fake documents," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Crime Branch, Jammu J P Singh told PTI. Singh, who is heading the probe, said that Reliance has conveyed to the Crime Branch about the deactivation of these numbers and on the progress of its internal probe. "We have so far raided premises of 11 major dealers of Reliance, Vodafone and Aircel in the city and seized records related to the mobile connection," he said. There are over 20 lakh mobiles connections of BSNL, Airtel, Reliance, Aircel, Vodaphone and Tata Indicom companies in the state. "If a minor probe can lead to deactivation of such a large number of mobile connections, what could be the number if such a probe is conducted in all these companies," a crime branch officials wondered. "The mobile connection issued on fake documents can easily slip into the hands of militants posing a major security threat as these can be used to trigger blasts," Crime Branch officials said. The mobile companies have been advised to carry out internal probe into the SIM records to ensure that all fake connections are deactivated, the crime branch officials said. As per the police figures, over 500 to 600 SIM cards and mobiles connections have been recovered from slain militants and their supporters in the state during last three three years. The mobile companies have been asked to strictly adhere to security guidelines while issuing the SIM connection and accept only those forms duly signed by a gazetted officer. -

i guess direct sunlight may be required only for emergency charging, otherwise a good brightness is enough.. something like in calculator.. more over the panel is mounted on the backside of mobile, so keeping the panel side up in brighter areas will always help.
