  1. Mobile Deals To Be Snapped Up

^^^ what is the domain name? corporate domain expiring ? shame...
  2. Indian Express.com Tuesday , Jun 09, 2009 at 0416 hrs IST Chandigarh: Soon, Chandigarh residents will be able to tune into two more radio channels. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is likely to open bidding for two radio frequencies in the coming months. The two existing FM channels in the city, launched more than two years ago, are already doing well in terms of popularity and revenue generation, especially during elections when political parties generously advertise. With the addition of two more private radio stations, listeners will have more options. Ritu Ghai, regional programming head of 94.3 FM, says more stations should have been started long ago. “When Amritsar can have four stations, a city like Chandigarh has ample scope for new channels. From a professional perspective, more channels will increase competition. But there’ll be more career opportunities for youngsters,” Ghai says. At present, the existing radio stations get many applications for internships, but not all aspiring radio jockeys are accommodated. With more radio stations, opportunities will open up. Gagandeep Singh, station head of Big 92.7 FM, says the “experiment” of starting private FM channels in the city has been successful. With new stations, he adds, everyone will gain. They would enable “us to harness the market better”. More players would also lead to the expansion of the industry, he says. According to a study, the penetration of radio channels is 20 per cent at present.
  3. Economic Times 9 Jun 2009, 0019 hrs IST NEW DELHI: Vodafone Essar’s plan to hive off its signal towers and telecom network-related infrastructure arm to companies in Mauritius has run in to rough weather for the second time after a government agency flagged the vexed issue of using a tax haven for such deals. The Department of International Taxation (DIT) in Mumbai, the government agency that examines cross-border deals, has said in its interim report that the Vodafone Essar plan seeks to route funds in a way to take advantage of the India–Mauritius Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). According to the provisions of DTAA, Mauritius-based entities are exempt from paying capital gains tax in both countries. After DIT’s interim report, the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has yet again deferred Vodafone Essar’s proposal on Ortus Infratel and Holdings. This is the second time a government agency has opposed Vodafone Essar’s plan. In April, the revenue department under the finance ministry had said the proposed investment in the new company through Mauritius would result in ‘round tripping’. The revenue department had referred the matter to DIT, which has again stated in its interim report that ‘the possibility of round tripping cannot be eliminated’. In response to a detailed query sent by ET, Vodafone said the company cannot comment on the observations of either DIT or the revenue department. In its interim report to FIPB, DIT has said the two Mauritius entities were mere holding companies with a share capital of just $100. It added that the telco has not furnished the source of funds for both Vodafone Tower and Essar Infratel despite repeated reminders. But a person close to Vodafone Essar, who wished to remain anonymous, said the source of funds for both these companies have been provided to DIT.
  4. Business Standard Tuesday, Jun 09, 2009 State-owned BSNL's plans of rolling out WiMAX services in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh through its tie-up with Soma Networks is on schedule, the telecom operator affirmed. Recently, some media reports had stated that tenders for these three states had been cancelled alongwith other states. "There were some recent media reports of WiMAX tenders being cancelled in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh but we are very much going ahead with our plans. Soma Networks had won the bids and have tied up with us for the roll-out in these three states. In fact, we have already registered over 600 subscribers for the mobile WiMAX services in Gujarat alone," said BK Sinha, general manager - broadband for BSNL Gujarat circle. Similarly, Soma Networks as well has clarified that tenders for these three states have not be cancelled. "There had been reports of WiMAX roll-out by BSNL being aborted in states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. However, we have not received any such intimation from the telecom operator and the plans are on the track. We have already installed 25 base stations in Gujarat and are in the process of installing more soon," said Mayur Tanna, vice president - sales and marketing, SOMA Networks Software Engineering Private Limited. Moreover, Soma Networks will be investing around $ 80 million (Rs 400 crore approx.) in Gujarat. The company had begun offering mobile WiMAX products through state-owned BSNL's broadband service networks in Gujarat since February. So far, SOMA Networks has invested about $ 50 million (Rs 250 crore approx.) in Gujarat and has set up around 30 base stations on BSNL's network. The company, which saw a revenue of Rs 7 crore for the financial year 2008-09, is expecting to earn around Rs 50 crore from Gujarat by end of fiscal 2009-10. Tanna added that the further investment will also be used to take the total number of base stations in Gujarat to 300 by end of the fiscal.
  5. Times of India 9 Jun 2009, 0327 hrs IST, TNN CHANDIGARH: When he was charged Rs 10 per day for utilizing dada.net services, Ranbir Singh, a Sector-34 resident, moved consumer court against the telecommunication company. Holding that Bharti Airtel Limited had wrongly charged him Rs 10 about 15 to 20 times, UT consumer forum directed it to reverse all entries of Rs 10 debited from Singh?s account and also to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation and Rs 1,100 as litigation costs. Deciding the complaint, the forum, headed by Jagroop Singh Mahal, said, ‘’It is generally seen that a message is flashed by mobile service providers without mentioning as to what the monetary liability to the consumer would be in case he opts for a particular service.’’ Airtel was also asked to maintain records regarding the consent given by consumers for a particular service and it was added that in the absence of these records, it would be presumed that no consent of the subscriber was taken. An Airtel subscriber, Singh allegedly received regular messages saying he was being charged Rs 10 for availing ‘Dada’ services since November 2008. He brought this matter to the notice of Airtel with a request to stop the service forthwith, but to no avail. He alleged that whenever he got his cellphone recharged, the telecommunication company arbitrarily deducted Rs 10 per message, owing to which, he finally stopped getting his cellphone account recharged. Denying allegations in its reply, Bharti Airtel Company pleaded that Singh had sought activation of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-based service through which the subscriber could browse the dada.net library and choose from top Bollywood tunes, international chartbusters, latest wallpapers and screensavers.
  6. India's 2nd-largest Cdma Market

CDMA group sees 100 m new subscribers in India Sify Business 2009-06-09 08:41:31 New Delhi: Notwithstanding the fact that there are more number of operators moving towards offering GSM-based mobile services, the CDMA Development Group (CDG) has projected that India will have 100 million new CDMA subscribers over the next two years if operators are given adequate spectrum. Speaking to Business Line, Perry LaForge, Chairman of the CDG, said, "We think the CDMA subscriber base will grow another 100 million in two years. Both Tata Tele Services and Reliance Communications have reiterated their strong commitment to CDMA. They have been clear that the decision to implement GSM was really a matter of necessity because they do not have visibility as to when and what spectrum they will receive for CDMA. This situation needs to be corrected so that these operators can continue to grow wireless communications in this market. CDMA will flourish here in India if spectrum is provided." There are 100 million CDMA subscribers currently with Reliance Communications and Tata Tele both of whom are rolling out GSM services as well. Among the new players only Sistema Shyam has chosen to adopt the CDMA technology. 'Faster growth than GSM' Laforge said the growth of CDMA has been much faster than GSM. "CDMA started years after GSM launched (GSM started in 1995). After seven years GSM reached 10 million subscribers. CDMA launched in 2003 and by 2004 reached 10 million subscribers and by 2007, the fastest of all technologies to reach 50 million subscribers. We have now reached the 100 million mark just two years later. This is remarkable growth and CDMA operators have achieved 25 per cent of the market with just two operators competing against entrenched operators." However, LaForge said, for this growth to continue, operators will need to have spectrum to pursue competition on a level playing field with GSM counterparts. LaForge said CDMA operators are better positioned to offer broadband services. "With high-speed wireless Internet access now a reality in CDMA with advanced wireless broadband services such as Reliance's Broadband Netconnect+ and Photon Plus Services offered by Tatas, we see operators continuing to offer more devices, more services while improving their average revenue per subscriber. In many cases, the top wireless broadband operators in the world, in terms of performance, are CDMA operators. Examples include KDDI and Verizon. We believe this will continue to fuel CDMA growth here in India," said LaForge.

Nokia emerged as the most preferred brand for mobile handsets, followed by Sony Ericsson, according to a survey conducted by CyberMedia’s consumer electronics journal, Living Digital, throwing light on the future of the Indian mobile telephony. To understand this burgeoning telecom market and the user preferences, Living Digital, conducted an online survey of over 1000 mobile users across 150 Indian cities, and analyzed future purchase patterns, which handset manufacturers customers rely on and mobile usage patterns across the country. About 40% of the respondents had Airtel as a service provider followed by 27% subscribers from Vodafone. Idea, Reliance, Aircel and Tata Indicom subscribers added up to 15% of the respondents. The public sector service providers MTNL and BSNL’s subscribers participating in the survey added up to 13%. Nearly three fourths of the respondents were satisfied with their mobile service providers, while 19% were just about satisfied. The real issue was with 8% of the subscribers who were not so satisfied or not at all satisfied. Handset Preferences The survey revealed that more than half the respondents owned a Nokia handset followed by Sony Ericsson at a distant second with 16% respondents owning it. Motorola was at 7% followed by HTC at 5%, and Samsung, LG, and other brands like Apple, Blackberry, Asus, Spice, Fly, etc. made up rest of the pie. More than one-third of the respondents were completely satisfied with their current mobile phones while one-fifth were not too happy with the current handsets, indicating that they may look for a change in the future. Half the respondents said that they will buy a Nokia phone in the future as it provided good value for money. Only 8% of the respondents who already owned a Nokia mobile said that they were likely to switch to another brand. Sony-Ericsson was the next brand for future purchase with great multimedia capabilities and value for money offer. According to the survey, 85% of the respondents stressed on features and functionality to be extremely important, while only 42% felt that looks and styles were extremely important. A majority of the respondents changed their mobile phone once every two years, while 28% changed once a year. Almost half the respondents were willing to shell out between Rs10,000 – Rs 30,000 for a new handset. For another 11% of the respondents, price didn't matter as long as they found what they liked. SMS Most Popular Mobile Application SMS was one of the most popular mobile application with an overwhelming 92% respondents using it. Over half the respondents used their mobile phones for listening to music, taking photos, surfing the Internet from their mobiles, and playing games. Slightly less than half engaged in work related tasks like using the mobile phone to access the Internet from a laptop, checking emails, managing meetings, appointments and other work. About 18% of respondents also used GPS or location based services and accessed social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook, and Orkut) on the phone. They also used it for making payments, searches, trying new software, reading eBooks, PDFs and MS Office files. Service Provider Preferences Most of the mobile users were apprehensive about changing their service providers as they would have to change their number too. About two-fifth of the respondents said that if they would change their current service provider if they were allowed to retain their current mobile number.

  12. TRAI to issue consultation paper on MNP tariff structure The Hindu Sunday, June 7, 2009 : 1205 Hrs New Delhi (PTI): Telecom regulator TRAI will float a consultation paper this week seeking views of stakeholders and experts on fixing tariffs for the mobile number portability service, which will be available after September. "We will issue a consultation paper next week on the port and dipping charges of mobile number portability (MNP) service ... We will have to see the service is affordable to customers," TRAI Chairman J S Sarma told PTI. Subscribers can change their 10-digit mobile number without changing the service providers by October when mobile number portable services start. As per DOT roadmap, MNP services is to take off by September 20. In most of the countries where MNP is prevalent, the subscribers are not charged for availing the service. Domestic service providers say they need to recover the huge amount of cost they will put in the MNP infrastructure of their network. Sarma said afford ability will be a key consideration for MNP service and TRAI has to ensure that. There is forbearance in telecom tariffs but TRAI is the ultimate authority of the tariff related issues. MNP tariffs would be decided by TRAI, he said.
  13. The Hindu Sunday, June 7, 2009 : 1300 Hrs New Delhi (PTI): Concerned at the slow pace of growth in broadband, telecom regulator TRAI may come out fresh recommendations for the sector focusing on rural areas and using optic fibre infrastructure. "Broadband has broadly remained an urban phenomenon. It needs to spread to rural areas where the need for it (is) maximum. "We need to examine it in more depth. We need to study the issues afresh and see if instead of copper wires the huge optic fibre (can be) used to carry broadband services to the rural areas to reach high broadband growth", Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman J S Sarma told PTI. He said in rural areas broadband can help in a lot of critical areas like education, tele-medicine, and health, among others. Broadband policy was announced by the Department of Telecom in 2004 and it set a target of 2 crore broadband subscribers by 2010. As the year is approaching, the figures are nowhere near the target. According to TRAI's estimates, India's total broadband subscriber base reached 62.8 lakh by the end of April 2009, as against 62.2 lakh by the end of March 2009. In April, 60,000 new customers subscribed to high-speed connectivity, a 56.61 per cent growth rate on a month-on-month basis.

  23. Economic Times 21 May 2009, 1235 hrs IST NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel customers will soon be able to make and receive calls on their mobiles, send text messages and even access data while travelling on select international airlines, with India's largest mobile phone operator entering into an agreement with an inflight solutions firm. Bharti has tied up with AeroMobile, the world's largest inflight solutions company, which currently has agreements with several global carriers such as Emirates, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Bharti will be the first Indian telco to offer this facility to its customers. Globally, several operators across Europe, the US and Australia offer inflight services. Bharti Airtel's chief marketing officer Raghunath Mandava said 434 international flights that has this facility had taken off/landed in India in April. AeroMobile, a UK-based company majority-owned by Norway's Telenor, is in the process of entering into tie-ups with more airlines and this number is set to increase, said Mr Mandava. "While AeroMobile has tie-ups with Emirates & Malaysia Airlines, not every aircraft on their fleet will have this facility. It will depend on whether the aircraft allotted on that route has been wired by AeroMobile. But, passengers will be informed during their bookings if the facility is available on the flight," he said. Airtel customers will only have to activate their international roaming to use the service. On the tariff front, the rates will be similar to what Indian customers pay when they avail international roaming in Norway. This is because, AeroMobile is majority-owned by Norway's Telenor. An outgoing call will cost Rs 188 per minute while it will be Rs 24 per minute for incoming calls. Passengers will be charged Rs 41 for an outgoing SMS while incoming SMSs will be free. Bharti did not give any revenue projections, but said it was targeting niche customers flying abroad. Passengers on international flights will not be able to use their handsets while flying over India as existing regulations do not permit cellular services on aircraft flying over Indian air space. "This facility will remain with the Captain of the aircraft. He can switch it on when the aircraft is outside the Indian air space, or turn it off, when it enters the country," Mr Mandava said. In March, Malaysia Airlines, announced that passengers using in-flight mobile services had exceeded 40% of the total. "Data devices such as BlackBerry are proving to be popular, with data traffic on some flights exceeding 2MB, the equivalent of 40 Black-Berry users sending and receiving email," the airline added in a statement. According to AeroMobile's website, caller ID will also function as normal during inflight calls. "Simply switch your mobile phone on inflight to access GSM services, just as you would while traveling abroad. You will be billed via your existing mobile phone service provider. GPRS and all other IP based services (e.g. internet) is available. More applications will become possible once higher speed satellite communications services become available," the company website says. AeroMobile has an agreement with the world's largest aircraft maker Boeing whereby the latter will install this technology in all the new planes it manufactures.
  24. Carriers to soon take a call on on-board mobile telephony IndianExpress.com Saturday , Jun 06, 2009 at 0043 hrs IST New Delhi: In the midst of plunging load factors on the domestic sector and rising operational costs, loss-making carriers are now turning to alternative revenue models to beef up their balance sheets. As a first, low-cost carriers are weighing the option of providing on-board telephony on their flights as an additional source of revenue. “We are in talks with several low-cost carriers in India to provide on-board mobile telephony through On Air,” SITA regional vice-president Damian Hickey told The Indian Express. On Air, a joint venture between SITA and Airbus, is a mobile telephony service that enables flyers to use their own mobile phones to send and receive emails, exchange text messages and make and receive voice calls and access the Internet. On-board mobile telephony operates on a revenue share model where the airline ties up with several mobile service providers operating in the country. The charges incurred on making such calls from the flyer’s own mobile are equivalent to international roaming. Under a non-disclosure pact, Hickey was unable to divulge further details or names of the airlines involved. “We are likely to finalise negotiations by end of this year,” Hickey added. Recently, all business-class configuration Paramount Airways had announced the launch of on-board mobile telephony, pending clearances from Director General of Civil Aviation.
  25. Techtree News Staff, Jun 06, 2009 0825 hrs IST According to a recent report, mobile phones market leader Nokia is steadily losing its hold over the rather important teen segment thanks to the uninspiring, bland designs that most Nokia phones sport. Nokia seems to have failed to introduce an attractive handset that teenagers could carry around. The survey carried out by Social Networking site Habbo Hotel was conducted over the period of a few months and saw the participation by 112,000 teenagers from across 30 countries. The results from the survey showed that while Nokia still remains popular, its popularity has dipped almost 8 percent from last year. The drop in popularity has helped Nokia's Korean rivals Samsung and LG to capitalize with phones like the LG Cookie that offers the user a touchscreen experience at a not so hoigh price. Yes, Nokia too was fairly successful with its touchscreen 5800 XpressMusic, which has sold over 2.6 million units so far, but post that the only other addition is the N97 which is hardly a teen phone. The Koreans on the other hand have been constantly releasing new, cheaper handsets while Nokia refuses to update its now old 5800 with spruced up features or even a nw sibling. The surprise part of the survey was that even though Sony Ericsson might be in trouble now, the brand is still popular amongst teenagers. It amazingly stood as the first choice for 18% of the students. This however was a drop of 3% over the past year. Nevertheless, it is heartening to see that the company has a hardcore fan following amongst teens. The 18% preference puts it at the third place as Samsung has now moved up to 19% in the teen segment.
