Times of India 30 May 2009, 1050 hrs IST Just the ring of a cell phone can pose a dangerous distraction for drivers, especially when it comes in a classroom setting or includes a familiar song as a ringtone, says a new study. "In any setting where people are trying to acquire knowledge and trying to retain that information in some way, a distraction that may just seem like a common annoyance to people may have a really disruptive effect on their later retention of that information," said the study''s lead author, Jill Shelton, a postdoctoral psychology fellow in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. The study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology includes an experiment in which Shelton poses as a student seated in the middle of a crowded undergraduate psychology lecture and allows a cell phone in her handbag to continue ringing loudly for about 30 seconds. Students exposed to a briefly ringing cell phone scored 25 percent worse on a test of material presented before the distraction. Volunteers tested later scored about 25 percent worse for recall of course content presented during the distraction, even though the same information was covered by the professor just prior to the phone ring and projected as text in a slide show shown throughout the distraction. Students scored even worse when Shelton added to the disturbance by frantically searching her handbag as if attempting to find and silence her ringing phone. "Many of us consider a cell phone ringing in a public place to be an annoying disruption, but this study confirms that these nuisance noises also have real-life impacts," Shelton said. "These seemingly innocuous events are not only a distraction, but they have a real influence on learning," the expert added. Titled "The distracting effects of a ringing cell phone: An investigation of the laboratory and the classroom setting," the study was conducted at Louisiana State University. The study found that unexpected exposure to snippets of a popular song, such as those often used as ringtones, can have an even-longer-lasting negative impact on attention. Thus, people who use popular songs as a personal ringtone may be increasing the odds their cell phone rings will be more distracting.

BlackBerry, Beware! Red Cherry is Here! Techtree News Staff, May 29, 2009 1509 hrs IST India's southern city Madurai-based software firm AJ Square Consultancy has readied its very own application called Red Cherry that pretty much does the same thing as your BlackBerry. It fetches corporate e-mails on your mobiles. Red Cherry aims to eat into the huge market that the likes of BlackBerry hold - a very ambitious task indeed. But the company seems to have everything in place and is targeting a 2 million user base by the end of this fiscal year. It is working on an aggressive pricing strategy as well. -

Economic Times 29 May 2009, 0715 hrs IST NEW DELHI: Unitech Wireless, a joint venture between Norwegian telco Telenor and Gurgaon-based realty firm Unitech, has awarded a $500 million (Rs 2500 crore) contract to Swedish firm Ericsson to supply and manage all network equipment for its rollout of mobile phone services in three telecom circles. Ericsson will be responsible for managing the network for five years in service areas of Bihar, Eastern and Western Uttar Pradesh, said a Unitech Wireless executive, who asked not to be named. Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks were the front-runners for the contract. Unitech Wireless, which is 67% owned by Telenor, has licences to operate in all 22 telecom circles across the country. The company will miss the July deadline for the launch of its telecom services, as it still doesn’t have the infrastructure in place. “We have tied up for towers and equipment. But our marketing and distribution set up is still not in place,” said Unitech Wireless chairman Sanjay Chandra. The services will be launched by the year-end , he said. Ericsson operates in 175 countries and reported a revenue of $27 billion in 2008. It builds and manages the networks of Bharti Airtel in large parts of the country. Earlier, Unitech had awarded a fiveyear equipment supply and management contracts to French telco Alcatel-Lucent for about $150 million for Kerala and Orissa. Unitech’s $225 million contract for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu circles had gone to Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huwaei. Unitech Wireless recently awarded a nine-year IT outsourcing contract to Bangalore-based Wipro for around Rs 2,500 crore. It has also signed an agreement with Tata Teleservices for the sharing of towers. -

Techtree News Staff, May 28, 2009 1809 hrs IST Earlier this week, Opera released its newest State of the Mobile Web report -- a periodic report that gives information on the top global trends affecting the mobile web. The report provides insightful statistics on the reach of Opera Mini, which has now become the undisputed leader in the Mobile Browser segment. Some of the statistics are mind boggling like the following things noted in the global trends. - In April 2009, Opera Mini had over 23.4 million users, up more than 140 percent as compared with April 2008. - Opera Mini users viewed nearly 8.7 billion pages in April 2009. Since April 2008, page views have increased 249 percent. - Last month, Opera Mini users generated more than 151 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Data in Opera Mini is compressed up to 90 percent. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed up to 1.4 PB of data in April. Over the previous year, data traffic is up 295 percent. - Opera Mini usage in Nigeria continues to surge, pushing past Poland and taking the #9 spot. India too features in the list, with the country showcasing a huge 169.3 percent unique-user growth since April 2008. Opera has also listed the top sites accessed from Opera Mini in India, in the report with Google, Orkut and Yahoo taking the first three spots. Gmail comes in at the fourth place. Indian Railways' website http://indianrail.gov.in and YouTube make it back to the list after a six-month hiatus. Another important piece of information we see in the reports is the number of non-smartphone users using Opera Mini to access the full Internet. The top handsets that used Opera Mini in India were the Nokia N70, N73 and the Nokia 3110c. Sony Ericsson W200i and the Ericsson K750i came in at the ninth and tenth positions. They are also the only non-Nokia handsets that managed to find a spot in the list.

India has 100 mn CDMA subscribers; to add 100 mn in 2 yrs Economic Times 28 May 2009, 2306 hrs IST NEW DELHI: India, which is already the world's second-largest CDMA market, now has 100 million subscribers using mobile telephony based on the technology and it is expecting to add another 100 million subscribers in the next two years. The CDMA Development Group (CDG) -- a trade association -- today said that there are now more than 100 million CDMA subscribers in India. "The country has added 50 million subscribers in India in just two years. Going forward we expect to add another 100 million subscribers in the next two years," CDG executive director Perry LaForge said. CDMA or Code division multiple access is a popular mobile technology. In India operators such as Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications and Siestema Shyam Telelink offer mobile services based on this technology. The other popular technology is called the GSM. Attributing this rapid growth to the availability of affordable devices and low tariffs, LaForge further said "Efforts led by CDMA operators, device manufacturers, technology enablers and the CDG introduced an array of entry-level handsets to the market while tariffs dropped by more than 40 per cent." As a result, CDMA reached 50 million subscribers in India twice as fast as any competing cellular technology. -

Mobile No portability in Chennai from Sep Times of India 29 May 2009, 0533 hrs IST CHENNAI: Aravind Kumar of Madipakkam, an animator, was frustrated by the quality of service offered by his mobile service provider last year and was looking to change. But, the thought of communicating his new number wasn't worth the effort. Come September, he will be able to retain his old number and also change his service provider if the quality of service is not good. Chennai and Kolkata will be the first cities to opt for mobile number portability (MNP). Simply put : MNP will allow a mobile customer to change his/her service provider for any reason, while keeping the old number intact, all for a small fee. "I was not very happy with my service provider for a long period, though things improved slightly over a period of time. But yeah, given a choice, I would shift my service provider, that too if I can keep the same number. If this number portability comes in, I will most likely shift my service provider," he says. Number portability will be able to keep a check on the quality of service offered by mobile service companies and is also likely to provide a level playing field for all mobile companies, including new entrants. Globally, number portability is prevalent in about 40 countries and the percentage of people who opt for this range between 3-5% of a subsciber base a teleco has. "In a country like India, the number of people who use mobile phones is phenomenal. So even if we see the same percentage levels here, it will convert into a large number of people using this facility," Ashok Sapra, managing director, MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions Pvt Ltd, a joint venture company of Telcordia Technologies Inc., told The Times of India. MNP Interconnection has been awarded the licence to implement number portability services in Zone 2- South and Eastern India. "We have been mandated to implement MNP within six months from the date of getting our licence. So, we are looking at a time around end September. We are working with all the service providers here, DoT and The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to ensure a smooth roll out," he said. -

Now New Telecom Licencees In Deals With Each Other
savramesh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Reuters India Wed May 27, 2009 7:44pm IST Allianz Infratech is in talks with Etisalat-Swan combine for a sell-out. Both are yet to start ops. Allianz Infratech, a firm which has license to launch telecom services is selling out to Etisalat-Swan combine. The deal could run into a few hundred crores and the companies have received clearance from the Department of Telecom (DoT), reports Economic Times. Allianz Infratech applied for a pan-India license but has permission to launch only in the Madhya Pradesh and Bihar circles although Etisalat-Swan, which has licenses to serve 13 circles, does not have a permit for these two circles. While the DoT has granted an NoC for the merger, it has asked for a fresh proposal to be submitted by Etisalat-Swan combine after the deal is approved by the High Court or tribunal. The merger would enable the providers to cover a larger expanse since Etisalat-Swan will now get a 4.4 MHz of start up radio frequencies in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. UAE's Emirates Telecommunications Corp (Etisalat) bought a 45% stake in Swan Telecom for $900 million in September '08. Allianz has been promoted by SpiceJet promoters Ajay Singh, Ashish Singh, Praveen Singh and Ashish Deora, each of whom hold a 25% stake. The deal will be the first complete sellout by any of the new telecom licensees. While Unitech Wireless has sold a controlling stake of 67.25% to Norway's Telenor, Bahrain Telecommunications is the largest shareholder in S Tel with a 49% stake. S Tel which has licenses to operate in six states only may look to acquire more spectrums. The Government and regulators were looking to take steps to lock-in promoters’ stake for three years on the new spectrums granted. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) also suggested that promoters wish to sell their equity before the lock-in period may be allowed to do so if they agree to give 50% of the profit earned on the sale of such shares to the government. However, it is not clear if these will apply to this transaction as these measures are still under discussion. -
Airtel To Complete Integration Of Orissa, Bengal Circles
savramesh posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Business Standard Thursday, May 28, 2009 Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom service providers, expects to complete the process of integration of its West Bengal and Orissa circles by the end of this month. "The process of integration of the West Bengal and Orissa circles is 98 per cent complete and it is expected to be commissioned by the end of this month. The process of integration of the two circles started from April 1 this year”, a senior company official told Business Standard. Bharti Airtel has already informed its dealers spread across the two states on its integration plan. The telecom major went for the operational merger of the two circles because of similar customer profile in the two circles. Moreover, the move is aimed at bringing more uniformity in Airtel’s mobile services so that the customers are benefited to a greater extent. There are 22 different telecom circles across the country and according to the guidelines of the department of telecommunications of the Centre; Kolkata, West Bengal and Orissa are separate telecom circles. In Bharti Airtel’s network, West Bengal and Kolkata constituted a single circle while Orissa was a separate circle. Following the integration of the West Bengal and Orissa circles, Deepak Shrivastava would be the new chief operating officer (COO) of the integrated circle. There would be no separate COO for the Orissa circle in the post integration phase even though the two circles would have separate marketing teams. As a result of the integration process, there has been a redeployment of employees of Airtel in both the West Bengal and Orissa circles to different locations of the country like Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. -

Techtree News Staff, May 27, 2009 1732 hrs IST In what is being seen as a move to cut costs, a Motorola handset, that was supposed to run Windows Mobile, has changed to an Android powered one, mid-development. The handset, known as the "Iron Man" and "Heron" as per AT&T internal documents, is now expected to be released as an Android phone by the last quarter of this year. While Motorola and AT&T both have declined the comments, this has certainly raised questions about Motorola's handset division, which is mulling over a $1.2 billion cutback and restructuring program. Even in the business segment, speculation is rife that Motorola is not adopting the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5. The company is reportedly not very keen on Windows Mobile 6.5 as it does not offer any incentives for businesses to upgrade. Motorola's enterprise division, almost exclusively, uses the Windows Mobile platform and the company, as of now, seems to be focused on Windows Mobile 7, rather than the stopgap 6.5. For those of you who are fans of Motorola phones running Windows Mobile, there is no reason to panic as this only seems to be a temporary cost-cutting wave. Besides, there will always be something new to look forward to once Windows Mobile 7 is released next year.

Business Standard Tuesday, May 26, 2009 Tata Teleservices Limited (TTL), one of India’s leading telecom service providers, has been rated as the best telecom operator in the Orissa circle in terms of customer satisfaction, according to a survey. The survey was conducted by Mumbai-based IMRB International, an independent agency on behalf of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Hindustan Times Tue,26 May 2009 Women could be flying Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets before 2014, breaking through the last male bastion in the world’s fourth largest air force. “I am 100 per cent sure that women will fly fighters in the next four to five years,” Fali Homi Major, Chief of Air Staff, told HT. “The air force is conducting studies on physiological aspects (of inducting women in the fighter stream).” There are 750-odd women among 10,563 officers serving in the IAF. Women started serving the IAF in 1992. They are allowed to fly only transport aircraft and helicopters.’ The IAF may have to tiptoe its way around issues such as marriage and pregnancy to give them fighter flying rights. It could consider taking a leaf out of the Turkish Air Force’s book. “F-16 women pilots in Turkey are utilised for training rookie male fighter pilots,” said Major, who retires on May 31, when he turns 62. Women pilots in the US Air Force have flown combat missions over Afghanistan and Iraq. Pakistan got its first batch of women pilots three years ago.

TV Next May 26th, 2009 Multi Screen Media (formerly known as Sony Entertainment Television) is planning to launch a dedicated sports television channel. N P Singh ,COO, Multi Screen Media in an interview to the Times of India has disclosed his plans to start a sports tv channel. Multi Screen Media owns IPL rights, New Zealand Cricket series and Football Association Challenge Cup rights which substantiate its desire to start a sports channel. Besides IPL and other telecast rights another reason which compels MSM to start a sports channel are its competitors who already own sports channels. Star television owns Star Sports, ESPN Star Sports and Zee owns Zee Sports. Till now MSM has been airing IPL and other sports coverage on SET Max . SET Max is the home of Indian Premier League which is the history making cricket event in the world. The channel grabbed highest ratings in the history of Indian TV channels and attracted a wide set of viewers from all age groups. Set Max also provides its viewers a mix of Hindi Movies and cricket. It is the only channel in India that has successfully run with a dual positioning where in it brings two of the greatest passions of India along with the spice of entertaining Extraaa Shots and Extraaa Innings. Among Hindi movie channels it competes mainly with Zee Cinema and STAR Gold in India. SET Max has been known for its biggest blockbusters and an extensive library of Super Hit Hindi Movies. Extraaa Shots have redefined the experience of watching Hindi Movies by serving the most exciting and exclusive trivia about the movies to add an extraaa fun. So watching a movie on SET Max also means going behind the screens and knowing the spicy tit-bits that contributed to the making of the blockbusters. MSM faces stiff competition from other players in the market, especially STAR Plus, Zee TV and Colors. That is why the channel is all set for a revamp of the channel. The channel will be airing daily soaps which will have concepts never seen before on television. To give space for the new shows all the daily soaps is going off-air, also the reality shows. It is only the two long-running weekend programmes Boogie Woogie and C.I.D. that has survived as they give good ratings. The revamp took place on May 25, 2009.
