  1. Techtree News Staff, Apr 17, 2009 1733 hrs IST Further to the 'Do Not Disturb' service offered to mobile phone subscribers, Bharti Airtel has introduced an initiative called "My Airtel My Offer" for its subscribers. My Airtel My Offer enables customers to know about the various Airtel offers to suit individual requirements and specific needs. To get started with this service, customers need to call 12131, a toll-free number. This will get them information about personalized offers like best value tariff recharges, validity vouchers, new value-added services, etc. - all this without being disturbed by unnecessary SMSes. The offers that are made to existing customers will be based on the customers' past usage, current recharge behavior, and VAS preferences. On dialing 12131, customers can listen to the offer of the day in Marathi, Hindi, and English.

  4. Business Standard Friday, Apr 17, 2009 Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest private telecom service provider, is in discussions to outsource its last mile connectivity of its broadband operations. The company is in discussions with two infrastructure service providers, Alcatel-Lucent and Cisco for outsourcing contracts. The company provides broadband services through its subsidiary, Bharti Telemedia. Last mile is the final leg of delivering connectivity from an operators’ end to the customer’s place, in case of broadband services this can be either over wireless or through wired lines. Outsourcing last mile operations will help the company concentrate on its core competencies, even as it will help in reducing cost of operations. Moreover, as last mile connectivity needs a lot a approvals (in case of wired connections), this will help in reducing time to reach customers, sources close to the development said. When contacted an Airtel spokesperson said: "Developing a strong partner ecosystem is part of Airtel’s unique business strategy. However as a company policy, we do not comment on any market speculation." Alcatel-Lucent President (India) Vivek Mohan declined to comment on the development, and Cisco executives could not be immediately contacted for comments. Over the past five years, Bharti Airtel had signed around seven outsourcing deals, most of them with global IT major IBM. In 2004, Airtel awarded a $750-million outsourcing deal to IBM, which was later increased to $2.5 billion as of March 2009. In 2008, IBM’s BPO arm IBM Daksh, bagged a six-year contract to provide voice and back-office services, including customer service from Bharti.

  11. Airtel To Launch Dth For Cars

Business Standard Saturday, Apr 18, 2009 With the start of general elections as a source of revenue Bharti Airtel’s direct-to-home (DTH) arm is ready to launch its mobile DTH units for cars. The company that launched its DTH operations in October last year is in talks with various automobile companies to install their mobile DTH units. DTH in cars works with the help of a special auto-tracking antenna that is mounted on the roof of the car. The antenna tracks the company’s satellite placed in orbit at 36,000 km, from where signals will be fed to the set top box placed near the television set inside the car. This will enable seamless transmission of satellite channels in the vehicle. N Arjun, executive director of DTH Services of Bharti Airtel Ltd says, “We have a product for SUVs, trains and buses. The cost of installations is high. That is why we are talking about higher-end side of the market, like SUVs and trains.” Not revealing the cost of Bharti Airtel’s mobile DTH unit, N Arjun said, “We are in talks with a host of companies for these products, but haven't commercially launched it right now.” This service was launched by Essel Group’s Dish TV in 2007, which has found a few hundred takers for this service. A company spokesperson said, “Election is a major puller for this service. Politicians and other interested parties need information round the clock so this keeps them connected to the news all the time. This service is substantially present in the metros.” The installation of a DTH unit in a vehicle costs upwards of Rs 1.5 lakh. In a market dominated by players like Essel group’s DTH arm, Dish TV, claiming around 5 million subscriber base, followed by Tata Sky (3.5 million subscribers), Sun Direct (3 million subscribers) and Big TV (1.5 million subscribers), Bharti has claimed over 300,000 subscribers since its launch. Another top executive at Bharti Airtel said, “We are in the media business right from residential, commercial and enterprises space. So pilots and proofs are going on for various opportunities. Nothing to comment on for now.” Dish TV is also ready to launch its smaller version of the mobile unit with smaller antennae and set top box that can be mounted on any kind of vehicle.
  12. Business Line Saturday, Apr 18, 2009 Despite the fact that lower tariffs have resulted in higher growth in mobile subscriber base, telecom players in the country continue to price any new service or technology they launch at a premium rate initially. Take for example the iPhone, which was launched in India at Rs 30,000 even as the same phone was being offered at a subsidised rate of Rs 10,000 by AT&T in the US. The result being that there are not too many takers for the Apple phone in the country. Recently Bharti Airtel launched a 16 Mbps speed broadband connection for a minimum monthly fee of Rs 3,000. Or take the case of state-owned MTNL, which has launched third generation mobile services in Delhi at Rs 750 a month with additional usage based charges. The same operators had started offering mobile services in the 1990s at Rs 16 a minute which resulted in very limited usage. However, in 2003-04, when the mobile tariffs started falling below Rs 2 a minute, the operators started getting the volumes. So why aren’t operators not offering lower tariffs on new services from day one? Pricing factors Operators say that pricing of telecom services is governed by a number of factors other than volume of users. “You will not find anywhere in the world an operator which started offering services at cheap tariffs from day one. It always happens in phases. This is because the operators may not have the necessary bandwidth in terms of infrastructure or distribution and marketing to manage a new service if it is launched for the masses. Therefore, they will launch a service in niche areas where they know subscribers are willing to pay a premium,” said a Mumbai- based GSM player. Cellular companies also say that while voice has become a commodity in India, the same is not true for data services. "An operator in the US is willing to subsidise an iPhone because it is sure that the subscribers in that country will use the device to access data services worth at least $70-80 a month. In India, operators are not willing to take that risk because they are not sure that will get that kind of usage from customers on a monthly basis," said a Delhi-based operator. "It is not different from any other industry. A new model of a car or an electronic device will always cost high initially. As volumes pick up, the prices do go down gradually. In the case of mobile services too, it took the operators more than 10 years to bring down tariffs to world's lowest level. It is not because they did not want volumes but it is more to do with a business model which is aimed at milking the cream first and then making it mass-based," said an industry representative.
  13. This is exactly what i wanted to discuss.. i feel with current volume, operators can actually try with low cost or tariff. especially data plans..

^^^ if the plan is good then the number of terminations will be less and through rimweb instead of terminating we can easily transfer the plan to other members who are interested.. thus maintaining a minimum number of connections.. if suppose 500 is the minimum conections required and we made 1000 or more then there should not be any such problem.. better to request cheapest plan with less number of connections [starting from 200, 300, 400 and 500 etc..]...

  20. The Economic Times 15 Apr 2009, 0215 hrs IST NEW DELHI: Nokia, the world’s largest handset maker, will launch an e-mail platform for its mid- and high-end handsets on Wednesday as it attempts to challenge the dominance of RIM’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iPhone, both known for their better e-mail services. While Nokia is the market leader in handset sales in India by a long shot, the company so far did not have an answer to BlackBerry’s e-mail services widely used by corporates and other high-end users. Nokia will first debut its new messaging and e-mail solution on its business-oriented E-series phone E75 in India, before extending it to other E-series and N-series handsets here. At present, all of Nokia’s high-end phones fall into two camps, the E series for enterprise and corporate use and the N series for entertainment such as video, photographs and music. Currently, Nokia does not have an e-mail platform to allow its users to view e-mails from different accounts through a common client. Nokia users currently view their e-mail using its mail for exchange service, but the catch is that it supports only a single e-mail account at a time. It had also launched Nokia Messaging push e-mail service for its high-end handsets such as E71 and N95.
