Techtree News Staff, Jun 17, 2009 1923 hrs IST Features an 8 megapixel camera The touchscreen slider phone sports a 3 - inch 16 M color TFT screen and features an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and D1 video recording at 30 fps, QVGA time-lapse and slow-mo video recording. Crystal has 1.5GB of internal memory, GPRS EDGE class 12 and Wi-Fi for connectivity. It measures 105 x 52.5 x 13.5 mm, and weighs 127 g. Explaining the touchpad, the company says that the phone's slide-down Crystal Touchpad first appears to just be an alphanumeric keypad, but it actually doubles as a touchpad for controlling the phone. Further, it can be used like the trackpad on a laptop computer. It also recognizes handwriting, responds to multi-touch commands and enables a new way of navigation called Gesture Command, another first from the company. Slide open, the Crystal Touchpad is completely transparent and illuminated with a soft glow. LG says that it is made of highly durable tempered glass and is framed and reinforced by a band of Liquidmetal, a composite alloy that is ultra-strong and able to absorb shock and vibration. For multitasking, there's a multitasking button and draw one of 12 easy symbols on the keypad. Users can assign these symbols to any of the phone's nine multitasking-enabled features. The LG-GD900 Crystal will be available in Chrome and Titan color choices. It is expected to hit shelves in June in select countries in Asia and Europe and will then debut in other countries across the globe. As soon as the India prices and availability are announced, you'll know it first on Techtree. -
Source 1. Amazon Shopping Application - According to the company, that app was designed in response to the popularity of a similar program for the iPhone. Users can take pictures with their Blackberry and upload them to Amazon.com–the app will then attempt to find similar products in the store. Amazon App for BlackBerry also features one click purchasing with Amazon Prime, package tracking, personalized recommendations, Wish List, and more. 2. Pandora for BlackBerry – Pandora Radio is your own FREE personalized radio now available to stream music on your BlackBerry. Just start with the name of one of your favorite artists, songs or classical composers and Pandora will create a “station” that plays their music and more music like it. 3. The developer also added some more functionality in this release. 4. Palringo – Multiplatform instant messaging software. With this you can chat to all your friends on Facebook, iChat and QQ. Plus with location you can see where your friends or colleagues are in real-time making it really easy to arrange to meet up. 5. BBScreenShooter – BBScreenShooter is a small tool to capture the current screen of Blackberry. This is useful to e.g. create documentation. 6. BeeTag – Multitag barcode reader for BlackBerry smartphones, supporting the most popular 2D Codes. After scanning the app displays product information, text and URL info for the products. 7. Google Apps – Experience the benefits of Google Apps with the BlackBerry experience you’re already accustomed to. Integrate the Google Apps messaging suite with BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), letting employees use built-in BlackBerry applications for access to their Google Apps email, calendar, and contacts. 8. Opera Mini – RIM bundles a halfway-decent Web browser with its latest handsets. But for real speed and desktop page rendering power, install Opera Mini 4.2. It offers RSS feed support, an easy-to-use zoom box, a switchable mobile view, and flexible bookmark management. Opera Mini lacks comprehensive Adobe Flash support, but so does every other phone browser on the market. 9. Capture It – This helps you to capture images of your BlackBerry’s screen and saves them as .jpg file. 10. Google Maps Mobile – Many of today’s BlackBerry handsets come with built-in GPS. Even control freak Verizon Wireless is beginning to loosen its restrictions on which applications can make use of it. One of the best is Google Maps for Mobile, which offers most of what you love about the desktop version—including satellite views, turn-by-turn directions, and local business searching—and adds a GPS-enabled, location-based search component for use with your BlackBerry. 11. Gmail Client - Gmail client is the next most useful and must-have Google app for your BlackBerry. This app gives you almost the same functionality as the Web-based Gmail by giving you access to your contact list, sent and archived mail as well as the labels functionality. 12. Google Maps – This is not as powerful as the Web-based Google Maps app and the iPhone apps, but it manages to bring Google Maps service effectively to your BlackBerry. 13. Google Mobile - Helps you to get the whole Google experience right on your BlackBerry mobile. It has Gmail, Google Maps and Google Sync plus links to Google’s mobile-optimized Web services such as Web search, Google Reader, Google Docs and Picasa. 14. Google Talk – You also need to communicate with your non-BlackBerry using friends. This app sports an interface similar to the BlackBerry Messenger and is as robust as other paid IM client for the BlackBerry. 15. ShoZu - ShoZu makes sending your BlackBerry pictures to your favorite social networking sites—including Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, WordPress, and YouTube—easy. Once you’ve installed the application and chosen your destinations, each time you take a picture or record video, you’ll be able to upload that media to them. We like that on a Symbian S60 ShoZu automatically asks to upload a new photo to your site of choice; on a BlackBerry, however, you have select which social networking sites to use for each upload. You can also use ShoZu for BlackBerry to add descriptions and titles to your photos before uploading them, but we weren’t able to read comments on the photos or geotag them from our BlackBerry—two features we were able to use on the S60 version and we hope will be added before ShoZu leaves beta. 16. GridMagic Community Edition -GridMagic (formerly MiniExcel) is an advanced spreadsheet application that is optimized and designed specially for BlackBerry smartphones. Lets you run complex calculations and organize some information into tables. It also lets you do the usual spreadsheet functions like freeze pane, select row or column, and copy-and-paste. 17. iSkoot – With iSkoot for Skype, you can make & receive Skype calls, chat, and use SkypeOut to call regular numbers anywhere in the world. And with our newly enhanced feature set, now you can easily place SkypeOut calls to anyone in your general address book, and enjoy cool new Skype chat features like emoticons and multi-party chat. What’s really great about iSkoot: unlike other mobile Skype apps, iSkoot is a thin client – so it won’t take up loads of memory or eat up your battery power. 18. JapbLite BlackBerry Personal Money Manager – The idea behind JabpLite has been to write a sophisticated personal finance program in Java MIDP which will work on a range of devices including Symbian phones and the Blackberry. This is a robust personal finance app for your BlackBerry. This app features multiple accounts, investment tracking, future balance calculations, net worth calculation, foreign currency accounts with automatic revaluation, regular transactions, standing orders, and default and user-defined categories. 19. Mobipocket Reader - Given the fact that BlackBerry devices are not the best for eBook reading, this app fully utilizes the devices display to bring you a decent reading experience. And since it supports the .mobi format, you are assured that you’ll have plenty of eBook titles to chose from and download on your BlackBerry devices. You can also convert PDFs or Word files on your PC and transfer them to your BlackBerry device. 20. TwitterBerry - Twitter addicts know that a key purpose of the service is to stay in touch with your friends and colleagues on the go. While you can do that with SMS messages or Twitter’s WAP page, TwitterBerry is a far better way. The app aggregates status updates and offers simple, one-click delivery of your all-important 140-character missives—perfect for that inspired existential insight that pops into your head while you’re waiting in line at the bank. 21. Ka-Glom! - Definitely a time killer, this Tetris-type game is one of BlackBerry’s finest. 22. Business Standard Thursday, Apr 16, 2009 Imagine this situation. Girish Ranade (not his real name), a Pune resident, is caught breaking a red light. He takes out his license as asked, and is mentally prepared to shell out the required penalty. What takes him aback, though, is the fact that traffic policeman tells him that his driving license is being confiscated since he is a habitual offender. Girish contests the claim. Non chalantly, the traffic policeman takes out his Blackberry and shows Girish a list of his previous offences. Girish meekly submits, but is still perplexed. How could the policeman have known? The traffic policeman simply entered the license number of Girish on the space provided for the same on the Blackberry screen which, in turn, contacted a backend server and the officer could obtain a list of details including previous offenses recorded for that vehicle, if any. Entering the vehicle number too would have yielded similar results. Girish simply serves as a case in point for traffic offenders in Pune who will have to be on their guard henceforth. The police department has decided to arm all assistants sub-inspectors and above officers with Blackberry phones in the municipal and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas of the city. These Blackberrys will be connected to a server back in the office of the department. Through this communication mechanism, a traffic police will have access to an entire database of vehicles registered in the city. The move is aimed at introducing traffic discipline and better equipping traffic officers on the field. “We chose the Blackberry due to the QWERTY keyboard. This mechanism will work through the GPRS service. An officer can have access to the database with his phone. Currently, when he catches a traffic offender, he has no clue about the background of the owner or the vehicle which makes it difficult. Within almost four months when the Blackberrys will finally be operational the situation will get better,” DCP Traffic Manoj Patil told Business Standard. The department will be spending close to Rs 40 lakh for the 100-odd devices that have been approved for the traffic police. An electronic challan will replace the paper receipts that are issued for a vehicle at present. And, the records will be maintained in the server. The next time the number is punched in, the previous records will appear. Apart from this, features like permit details, suspected persons’ list, repeated offenders’ list, stolen vehicles’ numbers etc will also be available at the touch of a button. “Multiple data entries are possible in this device which will save a lot of time and manpower required to physically maintain all the records,” added DCP Patil. The University of Pune and Ministry of Science and Technology’s body Science and Technology Park is helping the traffic department develop this mechanism.

Pune Officers To Catch Habitual Offenders With Blackberry
savramesh replied to savramesh's topic in The Lounge
After traffic cops, BlackBerry for RTO officials too It’s now the turn of regional transport office officials to sport BlackBerry handsets. The office will soon implement the Traff-i-cop scheme of the traffic police, which had won the national award for technology recently. The move is aimed at providing officials information about any vehicle at their fingertips. “The ‘Traff-i-cop’ scheme is being extended to the RTO as well. The same agency, which implemented the scheme for traffic police, will be carrying it out for us. As per the plan, all senior officials will be given BlackBerry handsets, by which they will be able to access data pertaining to any vehicle or a vehicle owner. By next week, all technicalities will be completed,” RTO Chandrakant Kharatmal said. He said an officer would be able to verify whether a vehicle owner had paid the tax or not via the phone once the scheme was implemented. “In case of commercial vehicles, if we find that the vehicle is overloaded or that the vehicle is not fit, we can register an offence and also bring the matter to the notice of the traffic police authorities. So in all, it will bring in more discipline.” -

Bsnl Aims 250,000 Wimax Subscribers By Year-End
savramesh posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Source A senior BSNL official has revealed that the company plans to have a user base of at least 250,000 WiMax customers by the end of 2010. The intentions were revealed in an interview with Telecom Yatra where the unnamed official also added that currently, BSNL's WiMax subscriber base has only 3,000 users. The state-owned telecom service provider recently launched WiMax services in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and has 210 base stations spread across North and East India. BSNL has plans to launch its WiMax services in the urban centres of Kerala and Punjab by next month. This is apart from the 1,000 base stations in rural areas that are also set to be commissioned next month. Looks like BSNL has big plans for the wireless broadband segment. The growth in this sector, however, will be directly proportional to the impetus that BSNL puts into creating a robust WiMax network. Then, there is the tariff factor as well which will decide if BSNL will be really able to achieve its target subscriber base of 250,000 subscribers by year-end. -

A greener way to waste disposal PUNE: The civic body may be in the dock for continuing to dump garbage at Urali and Phursungi, but a handful of senior citizens have shown the way to 35 lakh Puneites to effectively utilise kitchen and garden waste for a fruitful purpose. Sixty-year-old Prasad Naik, Vijaya Atre and Dattatray Joglekar (both 66) were awarded for making best pots, best beds (vegetable patch on the terrace) and best quality compost respectively by the Institute of Natural Organic Agriculture. These people have been making their own vermiculture and compost pits for over two decades now and these awards were in recognition of their efforts to grow plants using minimum soil and water sans chemicals. "I haven't used any chemical in my garden for the last five years. And the results are there for everyone to see," said Atre. Neat rows of potted plants, trees and hung pots with cascading greens make a curtain as thick as it is picturesque. Atre believes that her effort is noteworthy for the fact that her pots make minimum use of soil and water. "I use moss, rice husk, coir, compost fertiliser and vermiculture (gendul khat). The plants not only live, they thrive and necessitate the use of very little water. In today's time it isn't enough to garden; you must garden judiciously. All it takes is a little time and thought," she says. Separate pits for vermiculture and compost dot her garden. While the former consists of earthworms and wet waste, the latter utilises garden waste and a special culture that speedens up the process of decomposting. Little things add up. "Segregate and dispose off kitchen waste very day. That way you won't feel squeamish about it. The only thing I throw away is glass and plastic," she says. Dattatray Joglekar's pretty little vegetable patch on the terrace consists of a host of seasonal vegetables -- nourished only by vermiculture and compost fertiliser. The idea of making his own natural fertiliser sprang from the dead leaves and foliage generated by the 11 big trees surrounding their garden. "It takes a bit of effort, but the results are worth it: delicious, healthy vegetables unmarred by harmful pesticides," he says. "And they utilise minimum soil. On a bed of plastic, you first spread half-done compost fertiliser, topped by an inch or two of soil. From cherry tomatoes and tomatoes, to green chillies, brinjal, cabbage and cauliflower to pumpkin, I grow different vegetables depending on the season," he adds. That's not all. The Joglekars have soap pits on all sides of the bathroom so that the soap water generated from the bathroom washing and cleaning may be used for watering the plants. "This is a fine way to recycle water," he adds. Similarly, Prasad Naik, who was felicitated for the best quality of compost--adjudged by the fine state of his small but flourishing garden, says he makes use of empty mango crates and other throwaway fruit baskets for fertiliser. "I chop the kitchen waste finely before putting it in. It speedens up the process. Similarly the more fibrous material like stems that take time to decompose is put in a separate clay pot with a decomposting medium," he shares. "In these difficult times, every citizen must do his/her bit for the environment by making the most out of waste." The natural way to gardening -Use turmeric and asafoetida for treating plant decays -Presence of mustard plants amongst other plants will help ward off mosquitoes -Adding neem leaves to the vermiculture pit will add to its medicinal value -- Organic over inorganic fertilisers anyday --- Don't throw away water that has been used for boiling eggs. Wait for it to cool down first and then pour it into a potted plant. Ditto with used tea leaves and water used for washing vegetables and dals ----Vermiculture pits are often vulnerable to rats and bandicoots. Use rat poison--but keep the family cat/dog away from it ------Old Nirmalya (flowers and fruit offered to the Gods) can be alternated with soil in a closed container for compost fertiliser ---Recycle your bathroom water for your plants --- Empty fruit crates can be used as compost pits

Pune Officers To Catch Habitual Offenders With Blackberry
savramesh replied to savramesh's topic in The Lounge
BlackBerry is weapon of choice for traffic cops BANGALORE: At last, the IT city is moving into e-mode in traffic enforcement. Project BlackBerry started by the Bangalore traffic police in 2008 has now reached its final stage. At a function near Ashoknagar police station on Wednesday, all traffic officers up to the rank of ASI were given BlackBerries and Bluetooth-supported printers. City police commissioner Shankar Bidari said the advantages of BlackBerries included a robust database of traffic offenders, real-time access to history of offences, enhanced punishment for habitual offenders, catching those who didn't bother to settle their traffic violation notices and a real-time Management Information System which monitors performance of officers, logs types of vehicles being penalised and category of offences and makes the information instantly available to traffic personnel. Besides, there's no scope for manipulation (e.g. duplicate receipts and tampering of carbon paper) and pilferage of fines collected as well as recording the correct fine amount, he said. The BlackBerries can be used as standalones too, he added. Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic & security) Praveen Sood said Phase II, which involves 370 BlackBerries and printers, has advanced and robust equipment with protective covers. The initiative brings together all aspects of traffic policing and is capable of pulling out data on more than 2 million cases in less than 2 minutes, he said. It's backed by connectivity and data storage at the state data centre, which will soon be equipped with a redundancy plan also. Carbon paper and notice books will soon become part of history. Violation Evidence Management System Home minister V S Acharya launched the VEMS through which notices are being issued with the help of 160 surveillance cameras and five enforcement cameras used for traffic monitoring, regulation and enforcement. A large number of video-supported violation notices are sent to motorists. Motorists can view the violation photo on the website by entering the notice number. Once seen, payment can be made through the website. Once payment is done, the photograph is automatically deleted from the database. This technology was developed with the help of Mindtree. "This will lead to stricter action against violators. This facility, however, is available only for video-captured violations," he said. No law & order problem: Acharya V S Acharya denied there was any breakdown of law & order in the state. "We've asked for reports about the communal problem from the Shimoga and Hassan SPs. We're also getting reports regarding the attack on newspaper offices in Mangalore. Once we study the reports, we'll take action against the culprits,'' he added. -

Redchery To ‘push’ Mail And Pull Blackberry Clientele
savramesh posted a topic in General Technical Discussion
Economic Times 28 May 2009, 1909 hrs IST CHENNAI: US headquartered ICT company AJ Square Consultancy Services, with its global development centre at Madurai, Tamil Nadu, launched a patented 'push' mail technology product called Redchery for the global as well as Indian markets on Thursday. The Rs.15-crore fully owned subsidiary of the manufacturing group – Madurai based Lords group of Companies, is planning to price its product at one tenth the rate charged by its competitors, thereby acquiring about 20 lakh subscribers in a year. “We are aiming at an ARPU (average revenue per user) of Rs.110 per annum, and so, an annual turnover of Rs.22 crore for this fiscal,” said AJ Square MD Boaz Augustine. Redchery is an application that enables mobile users to receive their emails on their handsets via GPRS. It receives emails from free e-mail accounts like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and Rediffmail, and corporate email accounts like MS Exchange and IBM Lotus servers. 95% of the product development was done in the 200-strong global development centre of the company located in Madurai. Developed on a Java platform, it differentiates itself from the market leader in the field – Blackberry – by being network, operating system and handset independent. “However, the company is in talks with various handset manufacturers and mobile service providers in India for marketing partnerships during the commercial launch of its product sixty to ninety days away. The company’s focus will be on corporate customers, who currently comprise majority of the close to 1 million ‘push’ mail or Blackberry market in the country. It will foray into the Singapore and European markets once it attains its targets in India. “We are looking at drawing venture capital up to $ 25 million and are open to dilution of up to 45 percent stake,” Mr. Augustine said.
