Bsnl Comes Up With Lower Mobile Tariffs Of 50 Paise For Local, Std, Sms
savramesh replied to Arun's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Though I am deviating a bit from the topic, I would still like to ask this question. Why people still feel that subscribing to CDMA "locks" you ? Now Reliance and Tata both offer SIM based handsets and you can switch handsets just like GSM handsets. Apart from that the tariffs on CDMA, especially on Reliance, are also cheaper (though its a relative term). Gone are the days when you had only 2 handsets on Reliance, now you can have all kind of variety in the handsets and there are hundreds of them available in market freely. Starting from Rs. 700 to Rs. 25000. You have freedom to choose any handsets. CDMA also has pan India coverage. It offers better data speed than GSM. Then how its locking us ? I agree with u. Also more CDMA operators are on the way..so we will have 5 or more networks in short future. [Reliance, tata, Virgin, Bsnl and Shyam].. am i right ? -

Reliance Netconnect Broadband Evdo (with High Speed Evdo Data Cards) Coming Soon!
savramesh replied to P. K. Daga's topic in Data services
Realized the difference only yesterday. Was thinking i have 256 kbps broadband and getting only 32 KB/sec max download speed. I am actually getting 256 kbps download speed. 256 kbps = 256 kilo bits per second 8 bits = 1 Byte so 256/8 kbps = 32 Kilo Bytes per second [KB/s] with this speed you could download 1 MB file in 32 seconds 2Mbps speed = 256 KB/second with this speed you could download 1 MB file in 4 seconds Hope i am correct... -

Reliance is under the scanner and it’s the investigation into the Volcker report, which may spell trouble for the company. Enforcement Directorate, which has been investigating foreign exchange or FEMA violations by companies who bought oil from Iraq a few years ago, has now sought the finance ministry's approval to take the case international. It wants to send letters of request to Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon because it wants to investigate the $3.5 million surcharge allegedly paid by Reliance Petroleum on oil bought from Iraq. Enforcement Directorate also suspects that this surcharge may have been paid without the requisite permission of RBI and may be a violation of FEMA rules. However, interestingly the Enforcement Directorate says in its letter, a copy of which is with NDTV, that the then Reliance Petroleum lifted about 15.78 million barrels of oil through Alcon International. Now, even as the government investigation in the matter grinds on, Reliance Petroleum has merged into Reliance Industries and it’s the latter which may have to face up to the consequences of any investigation. Meanwhile, RIL denies any claims of wrongdoing and says that Reliance has always followed national and international laws and norms in all its business transactions. Also, the firm said that it hadn’t been approached by any government authority in the last two and a half years regarding this issue. The firm further went on to say that it had not violated any rules and regulations laid down by RBI or FEMA and that it had no relationship with the said firm. The ball is now in the finance ministry's court which now has to decide on whether it wants to go ahead with the investigations or not. Source: NDTV

Trai Says No To Broadcasters Controlling Distribution Biz
savramesh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Telecom regulator TRAI has recommended that broadcasters should not have any control in distribution operations and vice versa to avoid monopoly by a particular player. "Any entity with more than 20 per cent stake in a broadcasting company cannot own more than 20 per cent in a distributor and vice versa," Trai, which also regulates the broadcast industry, said in its recommendations to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Distributors will include multi-system operators (MSO), DTH, Cable, Mobile TV and HITS. There are three broadcasters - Zee, Star and SunTV - who have DTH business. The telecom and broadcast regulator has said that the broadcasters, who have control in distribution operations, will get three years for restructuring their holdings. A TRAI official associated with the recommendations said that the idea is to lay down rules of the game for the future although none of the existing players are under the purview of the suggestions. When contacted, A Mohan, Executive Vice President, Zee Network said 20 percent ceiling was already part of DTH license therefore it is complied with. "As for the cable business stake, which is a new proposal by TRAI, Zee group company Wire and Wireless India (WWIL) is a listed and public limited company and is not applicable to Zee," he added. TRAI also said that there would be no restriction on cross-ownership across telecommunications and media companies, a decision which it may review after two years. Bharti and RCom are the two telecom companies who have DTH businesses. Mohan said this could lead to asymmetry in the industry. However, Bharti and RCom officials did not comment on the recommendation. Mohan further said that the government should first accept the TRAI recommendations on modernising and licensing of cable TV business in the country and that would set the standard for the players. Star India officials said they were studying the recommendations. Star has a joint venture with Tatas in their DTH venture, TataSky, in which Star has 20 percent stake. SunDirect TV CEO Tony Silva said the company would able to comment after going through the recommendations. "Sun TV has no holding in SunDirect", Silva said. Talking about limiting the number of licences to be held by a single entity, the regulator said: "The current restrictions, policies and recommendations on these are adequate for the time being." The telecom watchdog is of the view that the current global financial crisis has impacted the Indian media industry, particularly the print media. "In such a situation, while all the steps are being taken to help the media industry get through the situation and reduce the impact of slowdown, it is essential that none of the safeguards have an adverse impact on the sector," it said. On consolidation in the media industry, it said there was a need to ensure that plurality and diversity of views were maintained while suggesting the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to conduct a detailed market study and analysis for identifying and determining safeguards. After working out required safeguards, merger and acquisition guidelines for the sector may be issued to prevent media concentration and creation of significant market power, TRAI said.
