  1. Mobile manufacturers prefer to equip their products with mocroSD cards and often forget to add Wi-Fi support. Spectec decided to meet user demands and introduced its microSD (to be more exact microSDIO) card SDW-823 with integrated Wi-Fi. According to the company this is the first microSDIO WiFi 11g card. The card complies with IEEE 802.11b/g standard. The host device should support SDIO 1.0 specification. The SDW-823 measures 23.3x11x0.7 mm. ------------------------------------------------- The British operator O2 has released a mobile phone called O2 Jet. It doesn’t have a camera or an MP3-player (however you can set MP3 melodies for incoming calls). It’s quite a simple model, however it features long battery life on a single charge. First of all, O2 Jet is meant for businessmen who need to talk much on the phone (the phone lasts for 9.9 hours in talk mode and over 540 hours standby). The phone works in GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) networks and supports GPRS and no 3G. Its LCD displays up to 65K colors. The only feature untypical for simple handsets is the support of Bluetooth and e-mail (POP3 and IMAP4) – the model is positioned as the business phone. Measuring 117x47x20 mm it weighs 121 g.
  2. Torbjorn Eriksson, industry designer, has developed a mobile phone concept for Sony Ericsson. The model looking so will hardly be released soon, but still it’s quite interesting and original. Its digital keyboard is made in the style of old fixed phones with revolving dial disk. The idea of the revolving dial disk is supported with arrows. The question is whether the location of keys is convenient. --------------------------------------------------------------- Digital Foci has announced the release of a digital photo frame “Image Moments” or the IMT-081. It is equipped with a 8” VGA (640x480 pixels) display. You won’t have problems with photo transfer to the photo frame, as the IMT-081 has a slot for CompactFlash, MD, MMC, SD, Memory Stick, memory Stick Pro, xD-Picture (with the adapter) cards. The frame can be used in portrait and landscape odes. It’s possible to operate files (copy, delete, rename), magnify, rotate images, adjust brightness and contrast. There is the support of slide show and auto timer switch on/off. In addition to graphics the device supports MP3 music and MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 video. The main flaw of the IMT-081 is the support of only one graphical format – JPEG. The preliminary orders can be made already this month. The recommended price makes up $229.
  3. Vertu, a Nokia’s subsidiary making exclusive phones, added two models to the RaceTrack Legends – Indianapolis and Le Mans. The series is devoted to the classical world race tracks. It will consist of six models, at first there were phones named after the Monza and the Silverstone race tracks. The phones are based on Vertu Ascent series and have same specs. Each RaceTrack Legends phone is released in limited edition (units), race track maps are engraved on the shell. Two more phones are expected in spring 2007. --------------------------------------------------------- The Butler is an interesting concept of an ultra mobile device meant to control home appliances. This device is expected to combine heating and lighting system, entertainment devices, kitchen gadgets and so on. It helps not only in the house, but serves fulfills info manager functions. Using the top mount you can hang the device on the wall in the kitchen or even the bathroom. It’s possible to plug extension modules, for example, a tiny printer to instantly print a recipe, a note or something else. After connecting a mic, a speaker, a camera and so onyou can make cell or VoIP calls.
  4. Samsung Electronics has announced a device called SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs. Its futuristic design might be a sample of future 4G devices. the SPH-P9000 is a convergent device that can make voice calls and transfer data via Mobile WiMAX networks. There is the support of CDMA EV-DO cell networks. Taking into account the dimensions, we have something between the PDA and the notebook-transformer. As for the opportunities and technical specs the SPH-P9000 is like the UMPC, but with compact size. It is powered by Windows XP. Its LCD features 5” diagonal and a WVGA resolution. The device comes with 256 MB RAM onboard, Transmeta processor, 30 GB HDD, 1.3-megapixel camera and folding QWERTY-keyboard. There is the support of Bluetooth interface and miniUSB port. Measuring 143x92x29.7 mm it weighs 560 g. Those who find UMPC too big and do not prefer PDA for limited opportunities will like the device. The release won’t be soon – the first half of 2007 on the Korean market. The company hasn’t unveiled the price, the device doesn’t seem to be a budget model.
  5. Globalstar has announced a new satellite phone GSP-1700. In addition to satellite connection the device supports CDMA cell networks and EV-DO standard. The model is positioned as the smallest and lightest phone by Globalstar. It weighs about 203 g, i.e. twice as less than current satellite phones. Dimensions are 45% more compact – 135x54x35 mm, 220 cm3. The phone is fed by a Li-Ion battery ensuring 4 hours of talks and 36 hours standby. The company expects that different operators will announce the release of the new satellite phone in nearest months. There is the multi-lingual support: English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

This time he worked with Motorola KRZR, a new Motorola flagman. Diamond KRZR phones are available on direct order, the price varies depending on the number and purity of diamonds.
  7. The American operator Cingular Wireless together with Samsung and Microsoft has announced a new smartphone BlackJack, also known as the SGH-i607. This is a slim smartphone with a landscape-oriented display and a QWERTY-keyboard under it. It is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. The smartphone features wide communication opportunities – GSM networks (GPRS and EDGE) and UMTS and HSPDA high speed data transfer standard. There is the support of Bluetooth 2.0 interface. In the release there is no info on the support of Wi-Fi. The display has a QVGA (320x240 pixels) resolution, and the camera – 1.3-megapixels. The operator will release the smartphone in mid November, i.e. the other day. After all discounts and with the service plan the price will make up $199.99.
  8. MSI (Micro-Star Int) has announced the release of the Crystal Collection. The collection combines “power of MSI technologies and elegant Austrian crystal”, “the mixture of Austrian beauty and Taiwanese innovations”, says the company. The first item in the collection is a notebook Crystal M677 by MSI, jewelers inserted 120 genuine Austrian crystals. The latter are known worldwide for the perfect quality and bright glitter. The notebook is based on AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, DDR II (up to 2 GB) and high-speed HDD 5400 rpm and minimal data read/write time. Besides there is NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphical processor. MSI Crystal M677 is equipped with a 15.4” widescreen LCD, a separate digital keyboard to the right from the main one and a 1.3-megapixel Web-camera. Wireless opportunities involve 802.11 b/g standard and Bluetooth. ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Japanese operator KDDI has announced a new mobile phone by Sony Ericsson – the W44S. This is a clamshell with additional free screen area, Nokia N93 and Nokia N92 smartphones have similar form-factor, however the construction is implemented in other way. The phone is tuned for multimedia functionality, including video. The W44S is equipped with a huge 3” 16:9 widescreen LCD. It involves RealityMAX brand technology, which ensures high image resolution. The camera features a 3.2-megapixel resolution, auto focus and image stabilization. Besides the phone supports digital radio service – wideband audio service with CD quality. The sales are expected to start early in December.   9. The companies producing LCDs for mobile devices are on race making their products ever slimmer to encourage the release of more compact devices. Today the South Korean company Samsung Electronics reported the release of the slimmest display, which is by 0.07 mm thinner than the previous record by other manufacturer. The new Samsung product is 0.82 mm thick like an ordinary credit card. Besides the display features “i-Lens” brand technology meant to ensure higher protection of the display (from scratches, vibration, shock and so on). Currently the “slimmest” LCD is available with 2.1” and 2.2” diagonals – 240x320 pixels resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio. The mass production of slim displays is scheduled for the second half of 2007. --------------------------------------- Kingmax has announced new product in the SDHC lineup. This time the company introduced an 8 GB SDHC card, which complies with Class 2 according to new specifications (SD v2.0). This classification of speeds implies the minimum write speed on SDHC cards – at least 2 Mbps. Currently there are 3 classes: Class 2 (min. 2 Mbps), Class 4 (min. 4 Mbps) and Class 6 (min. 6 Mbps).
  10. A mysterious company Gresso has recently announced an expensive mobile phone and provided some info about it. Now it introduces two more models and shares the info on the whole series. The starting collection will be called The Black Aura. Two new models like the first one are made of the African black wood. They are based on the same platform and differ only in decoration and the wood/gold ratio – Gresso Blackwood, Gresso Blackwood Gold Edition and Gresso Gold. The phones are 10 mm thick, they support tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) networks. The collection is expected to be released next year. Soon there should be launched www.gresso.com site providing additional info on the models. Fujitsu has announced a new series of Tablet PC – the Stylistic 5100 consisting of two models 0 Stylistic ST5111 and Stylistic ST5112. According to the company these are the first Tablet PC on the market with Intel Core Duo inside.   11. LG Electronics has unveiled its development LG “e-book” – an ecological notebook fed by fuel cell batteries. It got the status “Red Dot: best of the best” for the high quality design in Red Dot nomination: “Best concept design – 2006”. LG “e-book” involves batteries working on natural gas, methanol and other kinds of liquefied fuel. This is an ergonomic, lightweight and slim notebook, its construction ensures comfortable use and mobility. The notebook is equipped with 4 OLED displays at 4 sides and sensitive control elements. There were over 478 products from 39 countries competing for the best design award, 12 nominees of 72 accredited products won the “Red Dot: best of the best” award.
  12. At Seoul International Invention Fair 2006 was exhibited an original development by Seok Hong Jeong. It’s a mobile phone with two displays, but it’s not a customary clamshell phone. It’s possible to configure the displays and use one or both of them, this is a kind of the phone-transformer. The manufacturers couldn’t but introduce new OS compatible products and solutions.UMPC SenS Q1 For example, Samsung has exhibited its Vista-certified UMPC SenS Q1 for the visitors to MS Windows Vista experimental center. The device features a 7” WVGA-display, the support of 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth, Intel Celeron M 900 MHz ULV-processor and 512 MB RAM.

  19. CDG (CDMA Development Group) has chosen the name “Ultra Mobile Broadband” (UMB) for advanced technologies and services, which will support CDMA200 1xEV-DO Revision C (Rev. C). The new standard is expected to be published in the beginning of 2Q 2007 and be commercially available worldwide in 2009. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev.C is a stage in the development of the current high-speed data transfer standard EV-DO. 1x EV-DO Rev.C supports 280 Mbps peak download speed in mobile conditions. CDG believes that UMB will be the real breakthrough in next generation services. I’d remind you that services based on 1xEV-DO Rev.A are commercially used in Japan and the US. The first commercial products based on Rev.B should appear late in 2007.

Global Sources Direct, an online shop offering products from Chinese makers, has posted the info on an original device to charge Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson phones and MP3- and MP4-players. It looks like a compact mirror or a powder box to carry in a lady’s bag. However its dimensions are too big for it – 34x26x26 cm. Let’s hope this is a misprint and real size is in mm. This ecologically safe charger contains a solar battery, AC/DC adapter, 12 V car adapter, a 550 mAh Li-Ion battery. Output is 5.4 VDC, 140 mA. There are LED indicators. There is no exact info whether the charger would be available in retail, at the site it’s possible to order the pack of 10 units for $18.5 each.
  21. Neo Products, a newbie in mobile phones world, has developed a lineup of interesting phones. It positions them as the new generation of mobile phones combining attractive design and technology. Neo-phones are expected to be available in shops in March 2007 in Middle and Near East and in April in Europe. According to the photos below, Neo-phones look like concepts of future phones, which came to life at once. The first phone to be released will be Neo 808i. It features small size, 65x40x13 mm and unusual design with non-standard location of buttons and the display. The device weighs 90 g and has a 1.3-megapixel camera, a player supporting MP3 and MPEG4, Bluetooth and a microSD slot (up to 2 GB). The company says each phone will carry 128 MB of memory onboard and a 128 MB microSD card in the kit. Neo Products scheduled the lineup of phones with Wi-Fi and 3G for 2Q 2007. But the new series differs from the previous one in an additional small LCD display on the top of the cover. Like the W5F it is equipped with the revolving Web-camera for video conferences. The company notes that the model has a revolutionary peculiarity – an additional display, which works on Windows SideShow independent platform without launching the operating system. It provides access to diary, contacts, recent e-mail, photos, besides you can play some simple games and listen to the music. The W5Fe notebook can be used as a navigator, with the cover closed.   25. Till the New Year LG Electronics and Prada had announced their common product. Today they announced the release of the KE850 or PRADA Phone. As it has been stated earlier the new phone is equipped with a touchscreen display. According to the developers, this is a unique, world first completely sensor interface. I’d remind you that there was introduced another “unique phone with the completely sensor interface” on January 9 – a legendary before the announcement iPhone from Apple. It seems we deal with the founder of the phone series with sensor control. By the way, touchscreen phones are very popular in China and some other Asian countries, but they are operated by the stylus pen while the iPhone recognizes only fingers. As for the KE850, it’s not yet clear how the interface is implemented. The new phone is said to have a widescreen display (no info on the resolution), which enables you to use key functions, including the camera, video player and document viewer. There is a 2-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens. The screen icons fade away when the phone is idle. It’s possible to exchange messages during the music playback. From Prada the phone got stylish design elements, ringtones, downloaded content and accessories. The phone is quite slim – 12 mm. The recommended price makes up €600. The release date is set for the end of February in the UK, France, Germany and Italy, and for March in Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore), the Korean version is expected in 2Q.
