Yeah...International calling cards in US, UK and Canada.....and yes, they are quite popular among the NRIs there.... -
Technically, you get faster connection with ethernet (if it supports speeds upto 100 MBPS, which is the case with most these days). The USB port suppports speeds upto 54 MBPS. But then, since the bandwidth available is way below these limits, there is no difference in the speeds. I have used the both extensively with MTNL BB and have never noticed any significant difference in the speeds. The good thing with dual interface modem is, that you can use the both interface at a time with two different systems. Like, I use it thru ethernet port on my PC and thru USB on my Laptop, both at a time. Ofcourse, the bandwidth is shared, but then I do not have to bother settng up a LAN netwrok to connect my PCs. As for the speeds, MTNL/BSNL rocks. During the night hours, the speeds are constant around 30-32 kBps and during day time, it does fluctuate but its not that bad anyway. The download cap thing with these PSUs (and other providers in India too) is the worst thing, what a broadband cnnection is with 400 MB or 1GB of download cap? Due to this reason, I am shifting back to Airtel's Home 999 plan, which gives 256 k unlimited. Since I have used Airtel BB before, I would vote for Airtel instead of MTNL/BSNL as their speeds are equally good and have 100x better customer support. Cheers!

True...Half of Jaipur is facing network problem. The southern part of Jaipur (vaishali nagar, khatipura, jhotwara, ajmer road etc.) is having the worst ever network by any operator lately. I can hardly complete a call without disturbance/call loss/no voice and what not, no matter where you are, even on the roof or open space. Things have been so bad for the last 5-6 months only. When contacted the RIM CC, they say that they are putting up more BTS in the area (They are doing the same for the last six months but not yet done; though typically RIM BTS setup in an area does not take more than 15 days)

Hi Guys! Just checking if this handset s still available? If anyone know about its availabilty in Delhi or Jaipur, do let me know. I would appreciate this favour. Cheers!

Nope...Nokia 6630 is also a wCDMA phone...Infact this is the first 3G Smartphone from Nokia. It is a dual mode (GSM and wCDMA) and triband GSM phone. I recently bought this phone, truly a masterpiece. http://nokia.co.in/nokia/0,,59882,00.html I bought this phone so that I can roam internationally without much of hassles. Otherwise, I love my RIM and use it as my primary phone, but then honestly we do not have good high end handsets compatible with RIM. Hope things will change soon. Forgot to add, I used EDGE and found it really fast, infact way faster then Rconnect, but then it is very expensive to use. Using internet (thru PC link) over EDGE is way too expensive....More than 50 ruppes for an MB.... My Opinion : EDGE is faster than CDMA1XRTT, but then there is no reason to compare the two. EDGE is the 3G standard for GSM, whereas CDMA1xRTT is still the 2G standard for CDMA. No way should we compare the two different generations of technology. Let the EV-DO roll out in India, then it would be justiciable to compare the two and that would be an honest conclusion in favour of a better technology. Cheers!

RIC/MR/2005/46 Reliance WebWorld bags Frost & Sullivan award for Video Conferencing Navi Mumbai, October 13, 2005, October 13, 2005 Reliance WebWorld on Monday won this year's Frost & Sullivan Market Leadership Award for Video Conferencing services. The award has been given in recognition of Reliance WebWorld's emergence within one year as the single largest player in Indian videoconferencing industry with a whopping 44% market share. Frost & Sullivan Awards are presented to companies for excellence, diligence, commitment and using innovative business strategies to make their mark in the global market. Criteria used to determine winners are rigorous. "Video conferencing was always thought to be the elite's preserve. Reliance Infocomm was the first to make it available to masses through its 241 WebWorlds in 105 Indian cities. Today, it is the most effective tool of communication for corporates and individuals alike," Sarup Chowdhary, CEO, Reliance WebWorld. Given the medium's tremendous interactivity and utility and the positive financial implications, more and more companies are gainfully using Reliance' videoconferencing facilities to conduct their out-of-town businesses including sales and project reviews. Over a dozen companies, many of them multinational, are using it for activities like corporate broadcast, product demos, promotions, corporate training, interviews for recruitment and legal proceedings. A Mumbai-based law firm used videoconferencing to record statements of a client based in Turkey. PR agencies are increasingly using it to discuss new product campaign with clients. Reliance Infocomm Ltd., an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises group company, is India's largest private information and communications services provider, with a subscriber base of over 13 million. Reliance Infocomm has established a pan-India, high-capacity, integrated (wireless and wireline), convergent (voice, data and video) digital network, to offer services spanning the entire Infocomm value chain. The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises group is a member of the Reliance Group founded by Shri Dhirubhai H. Ambani (1932-2002).

Chikka Messenger By Indiatimes
basant_jp replied to Vishal Gupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
Yes, it works for RIM too, infact messages delivered within seconds...i have tested myself with lots of RIM numbers....but then same glich is here too...atleast one of the three messgaes sent must be replied to continue sending messages to the same number...Similar service is available through yahoo and rediff as well. But with yahoo, you can keep logged on to your RIM, which is not possibel with rediffbol or chikka. Only one good thing for chikka, if you have registered with your cell number, CLI works for the receiver...the message is deliverd as 888893XXXXXXXX . Cheers! -
Just to add to Utsav's post, with Sierra Data Card, one can get steady download speeds of 14-16 kBps (atleast in Delhi). Somewhere in my earlier post, i had complained of the very slow speed on the data card, but things improved later on. For the last 4 months, I am getting good speeds, mostly above 14 kBps. Cheers!

Hi all, Came to know about this order through one of my friend working in RWW as well. He also told me that the list of handsets include several high end models including atleast one PDA phone. Should see these handsets before Diwali, RIM is preparing for the festive season. Cheers! Basant

Well, I guess not.... Reason?? Simple, even at present, Wideband CDMA in no way offers faster data transfers than CDMA Ev-DO....theoretically WCDMA offers transfers upto 2 mbps at present compared to 2.4 mbps of CDMA.....and I don't believe someone saying that there is no scope of futher upgradation of speeds on CDMA technology... We must not forget that even in many europian countries (which are considered as the GSM only) are also deploying CDMA networks now. And not to mention, Hutch, the major GSM global player, is operating on CDMA 2000 1x in Thailand. As of now, I believe RIM will not switch to W-CDMA, especially when there is not exceptional reason to do so. But yes, since Anil is backing and planning the expansion of Reliance GSM, I will not be surprised if he opts of W-CDMA for Reliance GSM. Cheers!

You can buy it from Nehru Place for Rs 250-350. I purchased one at 250 few months back and works brilliantly. Cheers!

True Ashok. Even I did not face any problems with my LG sets (7130, 2130, 6130), though I did face problems with Samsung Boss. Overall, there is not much differecne in product quality of LG and Samsung. Both are reasonably good. As for Nokia, I think they are more rugged when it comes to GSM, but for CDMA, LG are Samsung are equally good. Cheers!

Agree with you City, Reliance has so far come up with as many as 31 handsets ranging between rupees 2000 and 35000; and feature ranging from simple talk phone to Colour Multimedia/FM/MP3/Camera phones. Anyway, I am not justifying the ill practices of RIM of not allowing handset activation on other's network. What I meant by my post was that RIM has brought about a major change in India. Infact, the credt for the real telecom revolution in India goes to RIM, be it the network quality, call rates or even the handsets....It made others to work really hard to compete with Reliance. I believe RIM will be launching the high end handsets (like Samsung PDA and Palm Treo) pretty soon. As for the dual tech handsets (or better known as global phones), I made a post with details and pictures of two such handsets launched and available in US. Here's the link to the post. The Motorola one rocks, my brother owns it and is a very good phone. Cheers!

Technology wise Reliance network is way ahead of any GSM operator in India. For that matter, it's the handsets not the network. And you must understand and accept, Reliance is not a handset manufacturing company, it is a service provider. Since CDMA is a newer (and better ofcourse) technology in India (hardly two years man) compared to decade old GSM, have some patience to get good handsets. Afterall, its just the last 2 years that we have seen good GSM handsets... (that's after 8 years of GSM in India...). As for the handsets, do you remember the very first RIM handsets???, Samsung SCH N191 and LG RD 2030.....it was only after these handsets that the GSM phone widely started having feature like polyphonic ringtones and java enabled digital multimedia functionality in India. Otherwise, we were just stuck upto the Nokia 3310 or such phones (though these phones were good, but not feature rich!!!!!!). Anyway, we will soon have advanced CDMA handsets. RIM has became the second largest service provider in just One Year (it was the first to cross the 10 million landmark!!!!), it is beacuse of the affordable handsets and quality services at affordable price. To grow big, you need to capture the masses first, that's what RIM did and is doing. After all, the market for high-end handsets would not be more than 10 percent of the total sale in India. It does not mean we don't need high-end models, we do Okay, as for the 3G services, Reliance network is prepared with EV-DO deployment. It should not take more that few months to deploy the same once the spectrum issue is resolved. FYI, Typical speeds on EDGE network is between 100-130 kbps, which is capable of speeds up to 216 kbps..theoritically 384 Kbps... (It is advertised as *nearly double the speed of CDMA 1xRTT*, that means just the double of what RIM users are getting right now. ). And for EV-DO, the average speed is about 500-700 Kbps, which is capable of speeds up to 2.4 Mbps. Now compare the two..... As far as GSM providers moving fast for EDGE, they are actually fearing that Spectrum policy may help Reliance launch EV-Do before they launch EDGE (Due to the loopholes in the policy, or some other mean Ambanis better know ). GO through the following clipping - **************************************************************** NEW DELHI: Cellular operators fear that forthcoming Trai recommendations on spectrum would favour CDMA players in terms of allocation besides providing an extra carrier for the largest CDMA player.............."Any provision of additional carriers now to CDMA players would be grossly anti-competitive as it would enable them to offer 3G services immediately via EVDO. Such move would benefit only the largest CDMA operator," according to an internal spectrum note of COAI. "Thus a backdoor entry into 3G could be secured by the largest CDMA player while the GSM players (along with the second largest CDMA players) would be kept waiting till the IMT-2000 spectrum is made available to all." This will further benefit the first backdoor entrant into 3G through the EVDO route which will have a tremendous first mover advantage, T V Ramachandran, DG, COAI said in the note. ***************************************************************** Cheers!
