Check the actual speed of your connection.........when the service says its 64kbps, it normally has the speed in the region of 40-50 kbps due to attenuation. Especially if you have taken the service from the local cablewalla guy.
-
About 60 kbps should be fine for VOIP. Actually it depends upon the servie you are using, because it is upto to them to decide the bitrate for the conversation, ie: the quality of sound which they send over the network. Higher the quality more is the bandwidth requirement. I can quite easily chat on most of the services with ny 256 kbps conection.

The problem is that only these telecos have the telephone networks over which they can provide ADSL. Abroad any ISP can provide ADSL over any telephone companies phone line......they should do that here. Without that, MTNL and BSNL have a monopoly (almost).
-
Would be better if you could give credit to the original authors, but doesn't make too much of a difference if you don't.
-
128 kbps doesnt even qualify as broadband . I am hoping for maybe 512 kbps connection...the one I am using (MTNL) offers only 1 GB downloads.
-
You dont pay the safe keeping charges regularly dude.....that's just when you want to keep your phone in safe keeping ie: Suppose you rae going out for a month, then instead of paying the Rs. 590 rental of ADSL, you can just pay 100 for safe keeping (u can't use the net......but when u restart using it, you don't have to pay installation).

Download the drivers for your phone. Then execute the file using sudo INSTALL.sh (or whatever the filename is.....) Then follow the instructions on screen....

What sort of multiplexing? Time Division would be impossible. Frequency Division would also be difficult because the two waves would interfere to form a complex wave form. How would the gadgets accustomed to a nice Sine wave work with that?

Such a policy is nothing really new. It is used by many ISPs abroad, but the difference is that, if you exceed your daily limits, they simply cap your bandwidth, so you can continue downloading but at a lower speed so that other users are not affected. Sify on the other hand is simply reducing your validity....

Not on the net, but Balguruswamy is an excellent book to start with STL, but just the very basic stuff so that you understand what the STL is about. So don't buy that book, boorrow it if u can, because its a pretty basic book with just 1 chapter on the template library.

After the scheme is discontinued, they won't take any new subscribers. I believe, the current subscribers will continue having the same plan. atleast, that what;s happened in Delhi when the stopped the DSL NU plan there.

Bole to?? NAT's normally get the date from the internet and then send it to the proper private IP address on the network. But this is done INSIDE the NAT by assigning arbitrary ports to each request. So that when the reply comes from the internet on that port, the router knows which computer had started the process for which it has assigned that port number and accordingly forwards the packets to that computer.
-
But wouldn't mainting a log be difficult? I mean, the NAT assigns arbitrary port numbers each time, so in order which order visited a particular site at a particular time..it would be very difficult. Another thing is, many groups oppose the use of NAT as it is against the OSI model, which suggests that port numbers should be used only for processes and not for identifying host computers,
-
Normally you get a dynamic IP address, That means, you get a different IP address every time you login. Your IP address stays the same as long as you are logged in.
-
But as the network grows, the NAT would have difficulties right? I mean, in case of an ISP....the NAT can't handle so many users. On a LAN, it fine.....but an ISP is an altogether different issue. Anyway, all the knowledge I have about networking is pretty much theoritical since I am still studying, so who knows......maybe it actually is possible
-
True, but not many big ISPs would use this method to connect their users. For one, maintaining logs would be painfully difficult. Also, as the number of users grows, NAT would become difficult/slow affecting the speed the users get.
-
In case you want to host a web server of something on your computer.
-
In that case....yes MTNL offers a static IP, but with a charge of 1000/- per annum. Otherwise, you get a dynamic IP.
-
Actually....I am using Kubuntu now (the KDE version of Ubuntu) which looks much better. I like KDE better than GNOME......what do others feel about it? KDE? GNOME? or something else (IceWM, WindowMaker, XFCE etc..)?
-
What do you mean by a public IP? Every computer connected to the internet HAS to be assigned a WAN or Public IP.
-
I have been using Ubuntu for a while now.....and it rocks! Fantastic distro for newbies and a great forum for support.
-
I am using using MTNL triband and the speeds are FANTASTIC. I get a speed of 26-27 kb/s regardless of the time of the day. If you want unlimited offers, the night unlimited scheme may interest you. Rs. 590/- for a month. 12-8 unlimited downloads. Day time downloads 500 MB free per month.

I guess you could just use the windows scheduler to start Rconnect dialer. Save the password and set RConnect to to automatically dial on start up. That should take care of connecting....Disconnecting....dunno how you could do that....but theres gotta be a way.......
-
I think you need to change the rconnect1.0/usbwizard file. In it, Find the lines In this you need to change /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 to </dev/usb/ttyUSB>.........maybe that could solve the problem, not sure though, just a guess. I had installed RConnect on Fedora once....haven't tried to Ubuntu. As for apt-get, this command installs softwares from the online repositories of Ubuntu, ie: Downloads and installs the software you name in it. So you need an active connection to the net to use apt-get.
-
I think, once you configure using pppconfig you can use pon to connect and poff to disconnect. Or, if want a GUI, install KPP sudo apt-get install kppp Wierd problem with your pppoeconfig........try after restating the system maybe..... Also, could you post the script being used to install?
