Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

I differ strongly on this, Kanaga. Android 4.2 keyboard is a failed copy of swype. It tried to copy the gesture typing. The animation is catchy but the Artificial Intelligence part for word prediction is dismally bad. I tried it for a couple of days and went back to swype.- 1,081 replies

2G Scam: Supreme Court Quashes 122 Licences issued in 2008
sougatadc replied to csmart's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
This time the spectrum auction turns out to be a big flop. The much talked about 2G mobile phone spectrum auction ended in a damp squib on Wednesday with half of the airwaves on offer remaining unsold and government getting just about one-third of the targeted revenue. The government received bids worth "much-less" than Rs 10,000 crore in an auction that ended in two days, a far cry from the 35-day bidding for the 3G spectrum in 2010 that got Rs 67,719 crore. The government was targeting Rs 28,000 crore from the sale of 2G spectrum in the GSM band. Videocon and !dea won spectrum in 7 circles while Telenor got spectrum in 4 circles. AirTel and Vodafone won spectrum in one circle each. None of the five companies in fray bid for a pan-India spectrum for which the reserve price was set at Rs 14,000 crore for 5 Mhz of airwaves. The scant interest in the 2G auction was attributed to high base price. The government had put on auction a substantial part of the spectrum that was freed from Supreme Court in February this year cancelling 122 mobile permits issued by the then Telecom minister A Raja to nine telecom players in 2008. The comptroller and auditor general (CAG) had in 2010 had said that the decision to give away spectrum at rates fixed in 2001 could have resulted in a presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer taking the price garnered in the 3G auction as the benchmark. The government thereafter fixed the base rate for 2G auction at almost equivalent to the third-generation (3G) auction price. Further, as the government has promised to refund the license free paid in 2008, the net gain to the exchequer may be almost nil. The tepid response to the auction may mean that the government will find it difficult to meet the revised fiscal deficit target of 5.3 per cent of GDP. Sources said metro cities of Delhi and Mumbai, which accounted for 40 per cent of the base price of Rs 14,000 crore for 5 MHz of 2G spectrum, drew no bids at all. Bids in most of the circles were around the base price with the exception of Uttar Pradesh East and West besides Bihar. In fact, the auction got extended into the second day only on back of interest in Bihar circle. -

2G Scam: Supreme Court Quashes 122 Licences issued in 2008
sougatadc replied to csmart's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Tata took a very clever step that probably will change many things. The position of MTS is now very strong. With Videocon not in the fray and Tata withdrawing from it for its 3 quashed licenses, Govt will be thrown in a catch 22 position. It is now to be seen what the apex court will decide. How the vacant CDMA spectrum will be used and by whom is the biggest question now. Kudos to Tata for making this fray dramatic -
I bought a micro-SIM cutter from ebay to cut my MTS RUIM for my S3 and three Moto Razr handsets of my friends. When iPhone5 started to infiltrate through Parin, I thought how people will have a nano SIM for the handsets. But my confusion was cleared when I saw a nano-SIM cutter at Parin's place that day. . Avishek's Pantech Burst also uses micro-SIM. He doesn't want to use a cut SIM on his handset. So he contacted the AirTel guys for an official micro-SIM. Now the AirTel played the spoilsport by sending a nano-SIM instead of a micro-SIM. This story began from there AirTel appears to be over-prepared for iPhone5

And Tata stays there as the lone bidder for their three quashed licenses which they will get without competition at the minimum base quotation price. Tata wasn't forced to withdraw (being the lone bidder). This points out once again that Videocon's withdrawal has different reason. -
2G Scam: Supreme Court Quashes 122 Licences issued in 2008

^ That rule (GFR or General Financial Rules, 2005) fixes minimum number of bidders to 3 for an auction to be treated as a valid one. But here Videocon being lone bidder in the fray, the auction would have nullified them as a bidder, where is the need of withdrawing? I think that clause of minimum number of bidders was not binding here. Some other reason might be there. -
Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

Here is the leaked apk file for the upcoming Gmail application Gmail.apk All the mirrors hosting this apk file have been deleted already (the reason is unknown to me). This will surely be official in Key Lime Pie, I think. Two biggest features will now be the ability to pinch zooming and swipe to delete or archive messages - much like the notifications page allows one to do. Other attractions are much better navigation, revamped attachments. These features are much overdue for Gmail considering the fact that since long iPhone 4 boasts these features and Android don't provide these much needed features on their own devices for their own product (Gmail). Anyways, for this apk to work on your device, you need to have it rooted. I rooted my Galaxy S3, installed it and found it extremely useful. However, now I'm on a non-rooted S3 (waiting for the official OTA JB update, thus not rooted) and missing these highly attractive features on Gmail. Use root explorer (or similar application) to copy and move your default Gmail application from system/app folder to your sdcard. Now copy and paste this leaked apk file in the system/app folder and restart your phone. Enjoy all new Gmail.- 1,081 replies

I have been using Swype since last 2 and half years. After getting this 4.2 android keyboard I wanted to shift to it (as it combined the swype feature along with some other goodies). But using it for last few days, I find it not as accurate in predicting as Swype (I agree with P Vinod Nayak). I'm going back to Swype, my good old friend for typing

Now Videocon has withdrawn from the fray of CDMA bidders before the 5th November deadline of withdrawal. Tata will get their three quashed licences back just at the base price. With no other CDMA bidders in the field, it is to be seen what happens to MTS now. -

MTS offers free local calls after mandatory advertisement viewing
sougatadc posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Source MTS subscribers now can opt for getting local call credit by viewing advt.on their smartphones using MTS internet. After watching an advt., he will be credited with 60 sec local call talk time. This is capped with viewing of maximum 4 advts in a day. By sending an SMS (toll free to 55559) 'FREE' (without quote marks) the MTS subscriber will get an SMS containing an URL (http://madcall.mymts.in) which guides to a page for downloading the required .apk file from MTS site. It is to be noted that MTS's own network is required to download the .apk file. Using a wifi connection fails to dowonload it. I'm giving the .apk file here. Free call facility will be activated within 4 hours from the time of installation of the application. The credit will reach within 1 hour of mAd call request. The free talktime will come with life-time validity. The free call facility will not be available to the calls made to IVR service numbers, Short voice codes. It will not be available for STD or ISD calls. After watching an advt, the subscriber is required to keep data connection on to get the free call credit. It has been written in the article 8.22 of T&C, "MTS and its Partners will not be liable to give free voice call credits to any users where the data connectivity is established post 24 hours from the last Ad watched by the end user. All the delayed data connections post 24 hours will be treated as there is no ad is watched and thus no credit will be given."- 3 replies

No Root Screenshot It One of the best screenshot applications available in the market for non-rooted phones is No Root Screenshot It which is priced at Rs. 267.23 at the Play Store Its application has two parts, one is to be installed on the phone with the apk file and another part is required to enable the phone to take the screenshot with the application Screenshot It Enabler. For this you also need to download your phone's compatible driver and connect your phone to your PC. Run the Screenshot It Enabler program and when the phone is detected in it, you just click on the 'Enable Screenshot It' tab. The phone gets enabled to take screenshot even if it is not rooted. The target folder can be customized and there are options to how you take the screenshot, either by shaking the phone or through a notification bar menu. The delay in taking the screenshot can also be customized, default being 5 seconds. The resultant screenshot can be instantly edited and shared over common options like mail, facebook etc. A few screenshots on my Sammy GS III are given below:- 1,081 replies

MTS Launches 3 New CDMA Featurephones
sougatadc replied to rajanmehta's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
But, I've heard operators lose money on selling network locked handsets. Either they sell subsidized handsets or they try to sell overpriced ones which eventually decorate their own selves only, either way they get loser. Their only motto is to rake in more subscribers, not to sell handsets. -
