  1. I know this would be a really old thread but anyone can tell me a quick simple way to RESET a palm treo 755p to its real/factory E*N
  2. Onda Vi40 Elite Edition 9.7". In India for Rs 17,999 >> http://www.ebay.in/i...2#ht_7628wt_919 At AliExpress for US $ 226 >> http://www.aliexpres...holesalers.html Thanks Rajan. How do you manage to find things so quickly ? Though 18K for 10" is little too high for me when 7" is only for 8K. But still, at least its available in India so i can order quickly without customs and other delays. Also got the 32GB pendrive (posted by Taunk23 - thanks) and the transcend 8GB microSD. Solved my BB9650 slugishness. Did a rough test and it gives me 20MB/s read and 8MB/s write. All my earlier 8GB and 2GB cards (all class 4 and above BTW) are below 8MB/s read and 1MB/s write. So your SDCard speed test topic seems quite bang on. Earlier my BB was taking ages to delete or copy any large file. Now its instant. Looking at the money i have saved in just 5-10 purchases, I think you should really have a blog with paid subscriptions. I think every one would gladly pay 100 pm to subscribe. Or maybe Arun should allow you (and any other posters like you who have such massive readership topics) your own google ads on the topic ! I guess you must be spending at LEAST 4-5 hours every day looking for solutions & deals for others. Must meet you someday. Thanks again.
  3. Thanks for the detailed reviews Arpan and welcome to RimWeb Forums ! I was sceptical of the VeeDee D10 tablet till i read your detailed review, was thinking of ordering Ainol ELF before that but once i read your blog I went all the way to malad to buy this. And its a perfectly good tablet (except for the bad printing offcourse - but you can rub that off as i mentioned earlier) Saw your iberry review. So it is essentially a slightly better looking tab with almost identical specs as the D10. Do you know of any 10" capacitive tabs with Allwinner A10 cpu available in India ?
  4. Yes. Completely. Also, its extremely good at playing media and games. I think the GPU is quite powerful. Another thing is that it comes with lot of apps pre-installed like Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Docs 2 Go, FB, Angry Birds, and 10-20 more apps which are more or less essential so. All in all, i think its a good buy. Though it won't have the show off factor of an ipad. Anyway, i have never found a use for tablets beyond surfing the net while lying down. Or playing video clips & games etc. Anyone has a link on how to Root this thing ? I need to root and install ICS (image is there on ployer website here ) and then install Ubuntu. EDIT: (sorry I think i am going off topic. will post further things in android forum)
  5. Just rub it with a tissue paper, putting pressure through your nail, and it goes away nicely. BTW, this seems to support a lot of CDMA/EVDO dongles (apart from GSM / 3G ones). At least it mentions in the Mobile Networks menu. Yet to test.
  6. Brought a 7" D10 tablet from VeeDee by going to their office in Malad. For 7K (w/o bundled sdcard) Small office run by a guy who is importing these in fairly large quantities. Tablet quality is fairly good and responsive though definitely not as good as samsung tabs or ipads but almost as good as the Reliance Tab or other 10-15K tabs. His first lot has some bad quality VeeDee branding printed on it though I was able to rub it off with a tissue paper in 5-10 minutes. His next lot will have better printing he says. Tablet has 3 physical buttons (not touch buttons but click/press buttons) which don't look so good. I would recommend it only if you are looking at the cheapest usable capacitive tablet. Otherwise if you can stretch your budget to 12K you get a dual core capacitive tablet by mercury or some PC manufacturer (have forgotten exact name, will post later) which might be better. I needed it just to check some nfc reader etc so bought it as it has USB Host / OTG which samsung and other tabs usually don't have (or disabled) Its amazing how Allwinner A10 has managed to get these tabs to be available at such unthinkable prices. It can definitely be the first internet access device for the masses in India at this price. Though inbuilt 3G might be better as lower end of the market may not have much wifi penetration or access.
  7. Ubuntu comes to Android

Wow ! This is great news. Considering that most phones are getting phenomenal processing power these days, this was inevitable. It seems much better than the Motorol Atrix WebTop implementation of ubuntu. Have recently been running Ubuntu on Nexus S, but it requires a lot of hacks. This would be much better / hassle free and quite useful when you don't have your laptop handy.
  8. Some of the chinese tablets do support GSM dongles but hardly any one supports CDMA dongles. 1 or 2 tablet models do mention CDMA dongles but i could never get them to run. Just check the list of dongle models they support and buy a 3G dongle. If you really want to get your current cdma dongle to run then open a terminal on the tablet (install from market) and connect dongle then type dmesg and press enter. Tell me what it says on the last 5-10 lines (about usb connect etc.)
  9. Thanks Rajan. So is it correct that we should generally go for Transcend ?
  10. Thanks. Great Find. Allwinner A10 cpu is going to force everyone to reduce tablet prices.
  11. @dkaile: wouldn't PRL issue be there all the time ? But will check with Gaurav if we can reload PRL just to be sure. @enliste: Have tried from 3 different locations. Also, once its stops then during the next 4-5 hours it doesn't work even if i am in different location
  12. I have a small query : When is the EVDO password given - at time of MEID registration OR at time of EVDO activatation ? I have a Nexus S for which I had requested EVDO activation and thanks to Amit Jain it was done and I got a call from RCOM saying evdo is on. Then I asked the seller (sadik) for evdo login/passwd to be fed into nexus and i entered that with CDWS. However, it didn't work and kept showing 1x. I assumed i have probably not done the configuration properly. Later, when it didn't work after many tries and help from Gaurav, we tried the login/pass in Gaurav's phone and it didn't work there also (though is own evdo works in it). Does this mean that maybe the password is wrong ? Or does it imply that EVDO is not activated from backend ?
  13. All About Linux

Try using Shotwell (comes preinstalled in ubuntu 11.10/12.04b). Type shotwell after clicking on the left top ubuntu icon /launcher in Unity. It shows the option to view by creation date etc. see screenshot. Or you can install f-spot search for f-spot in Ubuntu App Market OR just type: apt-get install f-spot Although, I usually just use the file explorer and click ctrl+ to magnify and see the images while in 'list mode' where i always keep files sorted by date as default settings.
  14. All About Linux

Good. Network Manager has a tendency to confuse between CDMA & GSM radios specially if the device has chipset with both capabilities internally. Ubuntu is becoming more and more like windows now so its getting difficult to do things through the command line.. My Blackberry 9650 always comes up as GSM in tethering mode in Ubuntu and its very cumbersome to get it to shift to CDMA mode through command line as there are numerous things running to make every thing run 'out of the box' and you have to fiddle with all of them. It does do very well with 99% of the devices though even getting the country, operator and apn many times.
  15. HRA and Housing Loan Principal For Property

    1. To start claiming housing loan deduction/rebate you need to have possession letter. For under construction properties, you can claim previous years housing loan deduction/rebates once you get the possession letter. 2. You can show HRA & Housing Loan both only if you are not living in your house for a justified reason (ie it is too far from your place of work - usually it needs to be in different city but there's no explicit rule saying this - so you can probably get by if its far away or if its much smaller/bigger than what you need). 3. Maximum benefit is when you rent out your owned flat while you live in a rented flat yourself. In this case you can claim full interest while your rent income will be added as income (less 30% deduction allowed for maintenance etc) while you can also claim HRA exemption. Off course your need to live in rented house should be justifiable as mentioned above (ie too far or too small etc) I know its pretty complicated the first time you do. Specially, claiming previous years housing loan dedn/rebate once you get possession letter. There is absolutely NO RULE saying you can't claim both HRA & Housing Loan - in fact its done by everyone who owns a house in a different city while living in the city where he/she works. Its just that doing it when both are in same city requires some good justification as a backup - though IT Dept never really worries much about this unless you have many houses. So, in your case - first wait to get the possession letter; then claim previous years dedn/rebates. Then if you are not living in your own house and have rented it out you can claim HRA as well as principal/interest (without any limit) provided you show rent income. If its not rented then the usual 1.5L limit will apply for interest. If you start living in your own house, then you can only claim housing loan dedn/rebate and not HRA. Actually, I have found that housing loan dedn/rebate is hardly worth anything as HRA dedn is usually higher. Its just that you are getting to own an asset and getting some benefit.
  16. HRA and Housing Loan Principal For Property

You can't claim housing loan principal & repayment until you get possession. But after you get possession you can claim the previous 2 (or maybe 3, i don't remember) years repayments in the year you get possession. For details of IT rules you can go to incometaxindia.gov.in or go here directly to IT rules: http://law.incometax...e-tax-acts.aspx Unfortunately, they have changed the layout of the rules drastically so i'll need some time to link you to the correct section. Go to page 2 and see item no 22, 24, 25 Will give you exact section allowing claiming of previous years repayments tonight sometime.

Probably the autoconfigure has confused it for a GSM modem OR usb switching (from mass storage to modem) isn't working properly. Try the following:- (just confirm that the modem is working in windows first) Right click on the WiFi type of icon on the top bar right and click 'Edit' then select tab 'Mobile Broadband' and click 'add'. See if it shows you your ZTE2766 modem name in the drop down below. If it does, then just click next and select country and operator etc and add login/pass etc. If you can't see the ZTE 2766 device mentioned in drop down, then do the following and tell me the output: 1. Insert your AC2766. Wait for 5 seconds and then type "dmesg" in a shell as root. (ie. first open a terminal/shell by clicking on start menu or unity button on top left and typing "terminal" and then clicking on the icon which comes. then type "sudo su" to become root. In case you have set a root password then type su and enter your password) In the dmesg output it will say something about usb device, waiting to settle etc and see if it mentions any error or now. Or just copy paste the last 10-15 lines (use mouse to select and then press ctrl-shift-c to copy or right click > copy 2. Type "ls -l /dev/ttyU*" in terminal and see if it shows /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 etc If you have another USB modem dongle, just try that to confirm that there's no issue with your usb subsystem. Will give you more steps once you tell me whats happening with above commands.
  18. News Snippets

One of my friend had a slightly different experience:- One day he had a few lacs suddenly credited to his account and the entry was quite strange & he was sure its not any payment he expected from anyone. So he tried withdrawing as much as possible from some ATMs then transferred some to me & another friend to withdraw and give him etc - which we did. And we had a couple of great 2-3 day party with this free money credited by mistake to his account. After a week he got a credit advice from PF dept that it was his PF amount from earlier company where he worked 2 years earlier and which he had promised to give to his mother for something ! Kept asking us to refund all his party money for months. We didn't do that off course, but we had a great laugh at his expense and the feeling of free money was incredible during those few days.
  19. When you say you can't see the other PC 'using windows explorer' - do you mean 'Internet explorer' (browser) OR do you mean the Windows File/Folder Explorer ? Because windows explorer will only show you files on the other IP when you share some folders by right clicking them on the other PC. If you put the IP in a browser it will only show you a page if you have got a Web Server running on the other PC for eg IIS or Apache or Nginx etc Now for using DB you need to run the server on the other PC and then either give that ip for your db requests or maybe set it up with webserver etc. First see If you can share folders on the other PC and see them when you put share path (for ex \\115.240.241.111\myshare ) Then install IIS on the other PC and check from same PC if you can see IIS page when you type 127.0.0.1 in your browser (or type localhost). Then try from other PC by putting the IP in the browser (for eg http://115.240.241.111 ) If you can see webpage from same PC but not from other, then check firewall (or just stop it for some time to identify the problem). If firewall is off and you can ping then you should see the webpage. Once above 2 steps are working try to ftp/db server. First try both on the same PC by using localhost or 127.0.0.1 instead of IP. If that's working only then try from the remote machine. BTW, please tell me how to apply for getting a fixed/static IP on Reliance netconnect+ or on Reliance 3G data cards. I didn't know they provide that. Using dyndns.org or noip.com is ok for limited use but gets cumbersome if you have a lot of machines
  20. Wow, that's great. My RCOM 3G has touched 4Mbps a few times but never so high. But i do get over 3Mbps consistently on RCOM 3G in Mumbai - maybe because it doesn't have too many users. I don't know about coverage but its great along the WEH at least. And i find the internal miniPCIe 3G modem cards specially convenient with ultrabooks, no dongles sticking out etc.

  22. Reliance GSM 3G Modem Query

For huawei modems one can download mobilepartner from modemunlock.com for calls / sms etc. Huawei no longer maintains that but its there on that site.
  23. (Source: slashdot/zdnet) It seems RIM, Nokia & Apple have already provided back doors to Indian Military Intelligence for snooping on smartphones and MI has even managed to snoop on various US Govt communications from their Indian Embassy and other representative offices etc. I am forgetting the name of one of our RIMWEB members who was really really pro govt having power to tap RIM BBES etc without court orders, and i guess he would be really happy to hear this !! Though its really bad for privacy and citizen's rights and opens up only innocent people to misuse of govt powers, it does make me feel a little happy that at least our MI has some competence to snoop on Uncle Sam. On the other hand, there's a pdf "posted on the Net" showing the scanned memo about this from MI which really shows our security in a bad light - overseas hackers are able to get their hands on confidential GOI documents. Thankfully some portions are redacted. From: http://apple.slashdo...-to-governments Voline writes"In a tweet early this morning, cybersecurity researcher Christopher Soghoian pointed to an internal memo of India's Military Intelligence that has been liberated by hackers and posted on the Net. The memo suggests that, "in exchange for the Indian market presence" mobile device manufacturers, including RIM, Nokia, and Apple (collectively defined in the document as "RINOA") have agreed to provide backdoor access on their devices. The Indian government then "utilized backdoors provided by RINOA" to intercept internal emails of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a U.S. government body with a mandate to monitor, investigate and report to Congress on 'the national security implications of the bilateral trade and economic relationship' between the U.S. and China. Manan Kakkar, an Indian blogger for ZDNet, has also picked up the story and writes that it may be the fruits of an earlier hack of Symantec. If Apple is providing governments with a backdoor to iOS, can we assume that they have also done so with Mac OS X?"
  24. Information Required For Oxygen Recharge

Can one do Reliance 3G Prepaid Data Recharge online with this ? i am unable to find any way to do data recharge online for reliance 3G sim card - myservices only gives me options for voice/sms recharge - unlike for my evdo dongle where it shows data recharge options.

Thanks a lot Doc. I was worried its some problem specific to my handset. Not much of an issue if its with everyone. akey i put with ##2539 etc. I haven't needed to put min again but just in case its required, can you tell me where to find the min procedure ? Does the above JB process mean i can now install ios5 on iphone cdma ? or will that still have sms etc problems ? Since you are the resident iphone expert now, Can i install apps purchased from one itunes account (for different device) onto a second itunes account (for this phone) ?
