See if you can run the 'Backup' app and click on preferences (top left) and select profile and then give your password there. You can reset the password if you had created a security question earlier. You can also check if the password is correct by first logging in to the web page for palm profile (link given in 3D apps.. topic i think) If you want to create new profile i think you'll need to run the 1st use app. If its not visible just run WOSQI and go to tweaks and select show 1st use app there. BTW, i am not sure if you can create a new profile since my pre only let me create a profile 1st time. After that it never asks me for login id (email) but only the password - even after doctoring. Somehow it associates the handset with my palm profile login ID (maybe through serial no or something) Anyone has any experience or idea of ordering mobile parts from pdasmart.com ? I need to order LCD+Digitizer for Palm Pre but am not sure if its a dependable site or not. Also any one has knows of any cheaper options for this ? (pdasmart is quoting nearly 6000/- for the screen !

Actually, you were the one to correctly diagnose that the SMS issue is due to chinese chars in treo8 roms. Rest was just standard treatment protocol ! Now I realize why my bank SMS's were blank/incomplete sometimes. Strangely i never noticed this problem before you pointed it out.

Ok, I have made a new version of 145 sprint pre ROM - meta doctored with only activation & 1st use app bypass and NOTHING else. Previous version was giving problems to Genius though it was working on mine. In previous version I had disabled Radio Flashing so that i don't need to enter any data/voice settings etc again but have not done that in this version since genius's radio remained in airplane mode in previous version. Genuis, Std rom from treo8 link is uploaded and given above. (edit in orig post) Try that and see. My radio is working fine so can't say what may be wrong. Maybe muffy or hitesh can tell us.

The meta doctored ROM is working fine and i am able to send and recieve 160 char sms's. Data and other things are also working fine. Genius is also trying it so just wait for his response before using this rom.

Never happened with me on 1.3.5 or 1.4.1.1 or 1.4.5. I haven't tried 1.04 so can't say. Installed apps from WOSQI always appear at the bottom of the 1st launcher page on my pre. I am trying the meta doctored rom now. Will update if it solves sms issue (and doesn't have any new issue now!) BTW, anyone has any idea if its possible to buy a PRE Digitizer or (touchscreen+digitizer) as mine is dying. It doesn't register taps on left and lower left sides. Plus has ghost taps. I have done a meta-doctor on the Sprint 1.4.5. Pre ROM with the following things enabled in the makefile: Bypass Activation, Bypass First Use App, Enable Developer Mode, Disable Upload Daemon (daily upload of some logs to palm), Disable Modem Update, Increase Var space. Am uploading this rom as well as the treo8 std edn (linked by genius - since its download speed from treo8 mirrors was very slow) and will post links shortly once I test that sms is working ok etc. EDIT: 1. 1. I think Genius inference that the chinese character issue could have something to do with this may be correct. Initially i used to think that these treo8 roms mentioning chinese char support will have the entire UI will be chinese and i'll be stuck with an unusable Pre. 2. Even I get completely random results like Bablus - sometimes just 20 characters received. But all this only happens when its a SMS beyond 130. 3. I will try using meta doctor to edit 1.4.5 sprint rom to have it bypass activation stage. Will update and post IF I AM ABLE TO DO IT. Yes, that's 100% correct. You need to use wifi for OTA update though - 1x is too slow and will not even show up the update - ever.

Nav IT 3D There's another app called NavIT 3D which is very good. It shows 3D perspective maps like the stand alone car gps units and has audio directions and it does routing so you can select destination and it'll start showing & speaking directions. You can install from app catalog for free. It will install another dependency for speech output. You can download maps from here and since the maps are in single bin files (around 50Mb for a city) they don't eat up meta space like the millions of image files for map view. It doesn't seem to zoom out too much like map view though. I've also noticed that if you GPS is not giving good accuracy you may need to check that the GPS antenna clip is properly attached and has not come off. (Bottom left of the battery, there's a small rectangular thing which you can remove to see wifi & gps antenna cables/clips. Mine had come off once so gps was giving low accuracy fix & taking long time to get the fix. Putting the clip back tightly fixed the accuracy to very good or excellent usually. I use the GPS Fix app which keeps the gps alive by pinging it every 15 min.

I created a palm profile by using the 1st use app and giving my email and new password etc. I guess that should work for you too since my pre is also me*d programmed. The first use app does not complete totally and you can quit it after palm profile has been created. * Also it sometimes gives phone offline message for a second or two but nothing really happens (i got scared seeing that thinking its getting bricked or something). If you want you can confirm with some guru or your seller once that there's no issue doing this. Once profile is created you can check by logging in from pc/laptop also on this page (which allows you to remote erase also) then you can use backup app to login before running app cat. No need to run the backup app fully though as i've found it's useless - quit after its logged in and showing your details etc. Just FYI, Backup is much better with prebackup or save-restore app from preware. Or just copy the palm database to backup your email/sms/calllog/etc (as mentioned in another palm topic here) while contacts get synced from google/fb/etc and use notes (inglorious apps) to sync with google docs.

Maybe you need to log into palm profile using the 'backup' app (tap on the top left corner in backup app and you'll see palm profile menu) before app catalog. Every time i upgrade the rom it takes a few hours of using internet before app catalog will start working. I suspect palm backup is trying to syncing some things or some such thing (since sometimes it starts getting all my old apps back and i have to stop it) It never works for first few hours after update and always starts working flawlessly later (though occasionally it'll still give error 'this action couldn't be complete' or please update your os etc - but i think that's because i use 1X only and not wifi) Contacts etc take a lot of time to get sync'd first time after update in my case (1-2 hours of net being connected) @Genius: Companioin Link USB (CL USB) is attached below in case your app cat is still not working com.companionlink.clusbsync_1.2.4_all.zip

Mine too will be like that very soon i think, as i am sort of getting fed up of palm. SMS issue. Slider delicate. Ghost Taps sometimes on the screen (dialled a few people on its own. Had to move phone icon to right side since ghost taps are only on left side! Treo 755p was better, if only it didn't have the issue of needing reset before internet connection. Evo, Incredible or wait for bb torch in cdma. ? Or maybe i should stop all this smartphone fad and just use my old bb 8330 now as a simple phone ?

^ Yes. I am recieving truncated SMS's if the length is more than 130 chars. The 1st one gets truncated very short (20 chars) while 2nd part is ok. I am able to send full 160 chars to others. Is this what is happening to others also ? Or something different ? I'll try to put 1.04 tonight and see what happens.

WAAIIIT ! I just tried and even i am facing some issue. If sms is longer than 130 chars then it sends it in 2 parts but i only recieve the first part with 10 chars and 2nd part with all chars above 130. I sent it to myself. Let me try out a few combinations with someone else's phone and report back. I am sure this was not there earlier since i send and recieve very long sms's to one friend. Let me also check with someoneelse's normal reliance cdma phone like nokia etc. just in case this is some problem with the network or something. I haven't changed my PRL since what was originally loaded by the seller. Very Confusing. Sometimes I feel i should stop using these Smart Phones and go back to a simple 3-4K nokia/lg type of handset.

OK. I meant 160 only, wrote 140 by mistake. I am using 1.4.5 since some apps are no longer available for 1.4.1.1 or older (navit 3d etc). Otherwise, there's not much change that one can see over 1.4.1.1 (in fact there's hardly any nioticeable change amongst all the webos versions except some battery optimizations) But you can try if your sms problem gets fixed by 1.4.5 then it'll be better than old versions.

Very strange. I had been using 1.4.1.1 v2 treo8 for last few months on sprint pre but never had any sms problem. Am on 1.4.5 now. Hitesh, you may want to check if these guys are sending SMS longer than 140 characters so its getting truncated. By default Pre SMS app doesn't have character count (you can install if from webos quick install > tweaks or a patch from preware ), so even i made that mistake before i started using the character count when i got the pre.

Yes, its quite simple. Even I was able to do it ! (with some help from muffy when i got confused in reversing e*n and reversed the entire thing instead of in pairs). You just need to be able to install proper drivers, to install apps to your treo, copy files to your sd card and use a hex editor. It won't get bricked. Detailed file with step by step instructions is available on this forum. No, making it HCC based is beyond just technical things - it also needs some social engineering.

Pre does have some hw issues. I started getting ghost taps yesterday suddenly - touchscreen would show the touch ripples on its own and start dialling strange numbers or opening apps. I caught it on video to post here but after some googling i found that its sometimes due to faulty cable/charger and after changing my usb cable the problem seems to have disappeared. Touchwood. I too need to shift to evo or incredible soon.

If you need to backup & restore your contacts, SMS's, Emails and Call Log - for any reason like doctoring the Pre etc, do the following: Open a terminal (through novacom or webos quick install > linux cmdline) and type the following:- cp /var/luna/data/dbdata/PalmDatabase.db3 /media/internal/ then put your pre into usb drive mode and copy this file to your PC if you want Later when you want to restore contacts/sms/email/log, do: Copy the file from your PC to Pre USB Drive and then type the following: cp /media/internal/PalmDatabase.db3 /var/luna/data/dbdata/ source: precentral or some forum - i don't remember. But i have been backing up like this and had to restore recently after doctoring and it works perfectly. Otherwise even though i get contacts & emails back from google it takes some time on 1X and i can't have my sms's and call log back. And I am a little panicky about losing my address book since it has a huge number of people so i like to keep the file as well as some csv and in outlook/gmail everywhere!
