Palm's patent portfolio would have been very useful in HTC's fight against Apple. I would hate to see HTC affected by apple's case. But maybe its not worth the asking price or maybe HTC is sure google will help it or google will buy palm once price expectation goes down.

Google Android Group Shows Cracks As Partners Seek Alternatives
ami1 replied to ::Hitesh::'s topic in Android
The analyst are needlessly worried. Google's only objective in launching Android, Chrome, Chrome OS etc. is to ensure competition in the market so that no other company (MS/Apple/Telcos/etc) can dominate it enough to become a gatekeeper to google's apps and services on Browsers, PCs, Mobiles etc. Due to their offerings other companies are forced to include features in their apps that google wants like faster javascript in browsers, good browsers on phone OS, operator independent phones (still some time till they achieve this and progress to VOIP/Wimax>google voice) etc. They neither want large market shares nor want to make any money on these projects. They just develop features which are good for google services and market forces then work to make others also include such features in their products. Otherwise, telecom operators or OS cos may have started restricting google services on various devices or making them run slow till google partnered them or paid them. -
Maybe a little offtopic, but can someone explain what is the process for getting a new RUIM with your number if you lose the original RUIM ? Am using treo but had kept my original ruim somewhere safely and can not find it now. To shift to a ruim handset now, how do i get a new ruim with my number on it ?

Solved: Treo755 "radio Reset Before Internet" Problem (Error 3000)
ami1 posted a topic in Other handsets
I have been using a Palm Treo 755p since last 1-2 years. All Treos have the issue of requiring you to reset the radio (switch off & on) before connecting internet otherwise one gets error 3000 as they are configured for sprint EVDO while in India we can only use 1X on reliance or tata. Though its only a minor irritant, but as the treo takes over 30-40 seconds to reset the phone/radio it had been troubling me a lot as i sometimes need to quickly use the net for small things and get restless while doing the reset. Plus if someone calls or i've to call someone in between i have to reset again before connecting to internet. There didn't seem to be any solution for the problem either on the forum or even anywhere else on the web. Somedays back my co. put our netconnect broadband modems on VPN plan i.e. we get connected to office network and all internet requests then go through the office - resulting in No facebook, youtube or exe downloads. So i started using my Treo tethered to my laptop when i wanted to access certain sites (though 1X speed s**ks once you're used to broadband+) While earlier i had used some app for tethering this time I just used windows to create a dialup connection through 'modem over bluetooth' and dialling #777 with login pass as my no. This results in the treo getting connected and a small laptop like icon appearing near the top right. I noticed that this thing never gives an error 3000 or any other issue even right after a call. So i explored the treo menu to create a manual connection which wouldn't have the problem and found the following to work flawlessly: Go to Preferences>Connections. Create a new 'connection' with the 'connect to' field set to 'modem' and 'Via' field set to 'wireless modem' (plus usual things: dialing - touchtone, volume-off, details>speed-230,400 bps, flow ctrl-auto) and give it any name say TEST Then go into Preferences>Networks and create new service with any name and select TEST in the drop down and enter usual login/pass (cell no or UTS@.. etc) and phone: #777 (plus usual settings like: details>advanced: IP Address Automatic and Query DNS) Now whenever I click connect for this service i do not get error 3000 while using the earlier connection/service (which uses HiSpeed Wireless in the drop down) gives this error. and both opera mini and email work fine. Unfortunately, I've found this only now when I am on the verge of changing my handset. Though i still love this handset - lets me edit MS Office documents, email works flawlessly, one of the rare handsets to have a perfect call recorder, and though it only has opera mini it works better than mini on other phones as i can use netbanking and online demat/trading accounts which i couldn't do with mini on nokia 6265. Still.. have just documented the above in case there are still any Treo 755p users left and need this info. -
That is the 'other' reliance ie RIL or MDA Group. But even I think that CDMA iPhone will definitely be launched here.

Techtreeand some other sites are reporting that Motorola Droid/Milestone is being launched in India this week. Can anyone confirm if this will be a CDMA version or will they launch some GSM version here ? Is there a difference between Droid/Milestone ? Motorola Milestone to Reach India Soon Techtree News Staff, Mar 22, 2010 1819 hrs IST "The Motorola Milestone, also known as the Motorola Droid in U.S., is all set to make its debut in India - most likely, this very week. The Android based phone boasts of high-end hardware that includes a full QWERTY physical keyboard, a 3.7 inch capacitive screen and an ARM Cortex A8 CPU clocked at 600 Mhz the same processor that powers the iPhone 3GS and the Omnia HD. The Milestone will be the top of the line smartphone from Motorola when launched and will have the likes of the BlackBerry Storm2, the N97 and the Omnia HD in sight. The Miletone in its Droid avatar was a huge success in U.S. and was primarily responsible for Motorola s revival as far as its phone department is concerned. The company was reeling under poor sales and bad products until the Droid came along. In India, the Motorola Milestone will come with Android 2.1. It has a 5 MP camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, image stabilization. The price is expected to hover around the Rs.34,000 mark which is comparable with that of its competitors"

How does the Hero's onscreen keyboard compare with iPhone's ? I found the iphone's keyboard quite good to use, no problems viz-a-viz physical keyboards although one issue is that screen real estate does decrease while typing. Is hero's keyb equally good ?

Anyone Knows Where To Download Lotus Notes 8 Beta For Linux ?
ami1 posted a topic in General Technical Discussion
I had been using Lotus Notes 8 Beta for Linux for the past 2-3 years. After changing my laptop recently, I realized that I can't find my original download. I can't find the beta on IBM's site which only has a 60 day trial now. Does anyone have any idea where I can download Lotus Notes 8 BETA for linux ? Or if someone has a copy it would really be nice if they can upload it somewhere. Please Help ! -
Anyone Knows Where To Download Lotus Notes 8 Beta For Linux ?

Thanks a lot Savramesh. Would it be ok if I transfer some amount to him for CD/DVD/Courier and give my address and whenever he is free if he could burn it to a CD/DVD and courier to me it would be great. I really need the Lotus Notes linux BETA. Like an idiot i unzipped the trial version files and overwrote the beta files. I don't know why IBM has to keep the same file names for Beta and Final version. Now I am stuck with a 60 day trial while beta was forever. It would be good if you can confirm from him that he has Lotus Notes for Linux 8.x (any version) BETA and not 8.x final evaluation/trial. @Prafull4U: Will try the link from home it seems to be restricted in office. Thanks. -

Since its a genuine copy, i have no qualms in recommending that you do "activation backup and restore" The tool can be downloaded here Read about it here Though MS also has similar tools its too complicated while ABR works better. Backup the activation on a machine which is activated (dell) and then restore it on the new machine (acer). You need to then remove win7 from dell to be in compliance with MS license. Also, am not sure how much it works in transferring between 2 different OEMs for OEM win7 copies but i've heard it works. I have only tried it for doing a 2nd bootable partition on same laptop as 1st one is sort of locked for various things by my office domain login so I like to have another bootable partition of win7 where i can install whatever i want. Hope that helps.

Main issue is that apple is not allowing applications which compete with its own apps in the the App Store.

Though I am not a seller, I feel that buying/selling is extremely important for this forum as CDMA operators do not offer any good/advanced handsets so if people can't buy the latest CDMA handsets then most of them wouldn't have any need to visit this forum at all. And the easiest way to buy these handsets is this forum as there's some indication of the reliability of the sellers and it has also created a good second hand market. For example the only reason I am interested in this forum is to see what is possible on the different handsets so that I can buy/upgrade. If i have a useless/old handset from the operator then why would I come here frequently ? Most people are not interested in learning hacks for handsets which they neither own nor can hope to buy. Though I do agree that more info sharing by sellers is required. Also can someone tell me what is the process to get access to the techie enclave ?

Here is the detailed comparison:- CDMA Hero - Available. Droid Eris - Not Available. Nexus One - Not Available Sorry, just pulling your leg. Any gurus who do the comparison please also include Motorola Droid as i read that Sadik is using that so it may be available to us soon.

Yes, that what we want to know Doc ? Can I try you palm pre evdo PRL in Treo 755p ? How do i install it ? The earlier PRLs were prepackaged in a .prc file with cdmaupdater, so I don't know how to install a plain PRL file in treo. Can you give me some links ?

Wow, that great ! Is there any way we can get EVDO on Treo 755p ?

Where does one buy hero from ?
-
What attracts me to the PRE is that one hand typing is possible like Treo/BB/etc while in TP/TP2 i think i will need to hold it with both hands to type. Somehow i can't imagine myself using a handset so much if i have to hold with both hands. As i have yet to take the plunge and buy either of Pre/TP/TP2 to replace my treo 755 this is just my feeling with the info/pics i've seen - i may be wrong.

I am unable to download a version for Palm Treo 755p. Anyone has any idea how to do that ?

I remember that there was a rootfs image & kernel which i had to copy on my sd card after formatting it and install cocoboot.prc by usual method. Then on clicking on cocoboot in palm apps the phone would reset and restart at which point we had to stop the process and enter a number to specify memory on the boot cmd line. After this the palm continued booting and after some screens of kernel text the screen was blank but flickering at times so i could make out some new text everytime so i guessed boot is progressing. This continued for a long time and i reset the phone 2-3 times and searched some more on the net and essentially gave up. Radio anyway did not seem to be supported, at least at that time (around 6-8months back) so i didn't try any alternative kernels or patches etc. I'll search and upload the kernel/rootfs/cocoboot.prc etc. if there still in my home pc.

Ok, missed the dosbox bit. Amazing that they are able to run a virtualized os on such small CPUs. I tried booting linux once on the palm treo 755p with cocoboot but it took a lot of tinkering to just start booting and never really finished booting even after 15 minutes -so i gave up !

But I thought that win 95 etc can't run on ARM or other non x86 processors ? Only Win CE etc can run on ARM or non x86.
