  1. How are the sellers sourcing phones?

This seems to be a big secret. I have never figured out how the US CDMA phones are sold so cheap here. Shipping/Duties etc is all right, but how do the sellers buy the phones in the first place when these are on Contract in the US ? Unlocked versions are very expensive and the sale prices here on rimweb are usually much much lower. But obviously what ever it is, it is Great for us to try out fairly new handsets cheaper than any one else !
  2. Buying a new car? Discuss here!

Even I used to think I love driving manual. But driving day in and day out in sow traffic wears you down and finally I shifted to Honda City AT around 6 months back The comfort of an AT is unbelievable and to be honest you can never change gears so quickly as the Honda AT in Sports mode. I have a OBD-II bluetooth dongle which calculates 0-100 times very nicely and the AT always beats my manual timings. Offcourse, in terms of mileage there is a small difference but it is very little, unlike the earlier ATs. Nowadays its only if you keep it in Drive all the while when you are stopped. I was so skeptical while buying an AT that I tried all types of cars in all ranges and after settling on honda city AT I insisted on getting paddle shifts (where you can shift gears up or down from the steering wheel through two small paddles) since I thought that there will definitely be some situations where I will want to change to a different gear than the AT. But believe me, I have not had the chance to even TRY the paddle shifts EVEN ONCE ! The gears are always perfect and it makes no sense to use the paddle shifts. Off-course, you need to get a feel of the auto tranny and also know how to nudge the accelerator up or down to signal your intention to the car. If you haven't got that then no AT can predict what you will want to do next. It can only react to what you are doing now. So if you suddenly feel the urge to race, press down hard on the accelerator and it will downshift 1-2 gears and vroom ahead. And if you feel you are going to drive really relaxed but the AT is still on a low gear, just ease a little on the accelerator and it will upshift. Funniest part is that after driving manual for decades, and AT just for 6 months I tried driving my brother's manual car and kept forgetting to change gears while thinking why is the car making so much noise ! Never thought that will happen.

Why don't you go for Amaze Diesel ? Filling CNG is a hassle i guess.
  4. Android 4.4 KitKat

Kitkat on Nexus 7 etc does NOT have GEL (Google Experience Launcher) and few other things (these are only on Nexus 5 - for some strange reason). So after update you will not notice any of the new visual changes which you may read in reviews. Search on XDA Nexus 7 section for 2 apks ( GLE and Services APK ) for Nexus 7 KitKat. Once you install them you'll get the full experience. Tell me if you want me to upload them here. EDIT: here are the 2 APKs required for GLE. (source)
  5. Interesting Tech News

^ Chip based cards can never be accomodated in COIN or the 2-3 identical products in the market because Chip & Pin cards keep encrypted keys on board and they can not be copied like a Magstripe card. This is one of the key problems with Coin. Other identical products like Geode etc have flopped mainly because simple magstripe credit/debit cards are only prevalent in US while the rest of the world including Europe have shifted to, or are shifting to, Chip & Pin cards. Even in India RBI has mandated out the magstripe cards and after a few extensions all credit card terminals / POS machines will be dip (ie chip) and not swipe ones. Even US is now started shifting to Chip cards though magstripe is expected to be in parallel use for another 1-2 years. So Coin which is launching mid of NEXT year will have just 1 year before it becomes useless. Or it can be used only for Loyalty Cards etc. Further, all CHIP cards are technical capable of have multiple cards on them (they have segregated protected memory areas called pouches and some banks with Chip cards already allow super markets or cash card etc companies to use a pouch for some payment. So if consumers seem to like having all cards in one device the chip cards will start having multiple cards. Off course the rivalry between banks will spoil this for some years but if some non banking / neutral company launches a Chip & Pin card and lets all banks load their cards on to it then it can be a much better option than Coin and similar products. On top of that with Google introducing HCE (host card emulation) in Kitkat / Android 4.4, google wallet as well as any other app can do transactions without requiring a secure element (which was held back by the Telecom companies in US as it's usually put inside the SIM card) and Apple and iOS both are expected to start using BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) for passbook and wallet soon. BLE has certain technical advantages like not requiring the physical tap like NFC readers, better encryption etc but the most important advantage is a practical one - few phones come with NFC but within 6 months ALL bluetooth chips will have BLE (currently apple iphone 4S onwards have BLE or BT4 while Samsung S3 onwards and Nexus 4 onwards have BLE. though BLE was only enabled in Android from 4.3, but samsung had their own drivers which were being used in S3/S4 before 4.3)
  6. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

This is good. I spend almost 2-3 hours after every new install to fix my app icons in desired category/pages etc.
  7. Chalo bach gaye. I was on the verge of impulsively buying it as surprise gift for my wife. BTW, there a few more such "deals" on ebay right now :- iPhone 5S 32GB Gold for 49K buyer has 0 history/rating. Is from Mumbai so have asked if I can come and pickup the phone and pay on the spot.
  8. Even in Mumbai, Reliance 3G is excellent. I get 10 mbps data wherever I check. One big drawback is that I am in Lucknow for Diwali for 3-4 days and only 2g here. I have ported from RCDMA To RGSM After 5-6 years of cdma because I just couldn't use 2mbps EVDO after trying out 10mbps 3g for a week. I don't travel much out of Mumbai & Delhi so even the patchy network is Ok for me. For voice, my Z10 shows HD Voice on most calls and clarity is better than cdma for me at least. Tried searching for Aircel in Lucknow but it's not showing. IPhone 5S offer is definitely attractive if you are a fairly heavy user.
  9. iOS5 on iPhone 4 CDMA?

Can you give some details on how you got this done ?
  10. Do you want to show that a certain email was sent / received in YOUR OWN Gmail account on some old date OR you want the old date email to appear in SOMEONE ELSE's account ? It is possible to edit an email received or sent in your gmail account and change everything and save it; though it involves a pretty convoluted method and I had done it quite a few years back. It involved using some python extension to access Gmail folders for storing your files (when GDrive was not available). You could then mount your gmail folders as local network mounts and copy your files there which would appear in your gmail as blank emails with attached files with a preset Tag so that they would not clutter up your inbox. The same system was able to access gmail emails as plain text and edit/save them so that they appeared in your gmail with the changed content/date/from/to etc. However, if the mail is to be sent to someone else then their mail server will always show the received date, even if we were to change the 'sent date'. Unless you have their password - in which case you could edit your email received in their account. If you need it in your own account then I'll look through my stuff and try to remember and post tomorrow. Meantime you can search google for edit your gmail email or something.
  11. What Made You Happy Today / Recently?

  12. Any good deals for 40" LED TV - my parents need one. I was thinking of Toshiba from shopclues this or this . Would any models of Samsung/Sony/LG be available in this range (40-50k) ?
  13. All Kind of Softwares

Excellent list. BTW, F.lux does work on linux. Have been using it for sometime on win8/ubuntu/iphone as well as nexus 7 (similar app for android is called lux auto or something). It's quite good if you use devices late in the evening or night. Stops the bright white light from disturbing your sleep. Screen becomes a warmer yellowish color.
  14. Apple Announces iPhone 5S & iPhone 5C

So this will work on Reliance CDMA (calls/sms/evdo) ? Does it have RUIM or we have to get it registered etc.
  15. By now everyone is using whatsapp type of messengers. And it is actually quite good and simple to use for normal people as it doesn't require creating a login/pass etc - just enter your phone number and its done in a minute. I have found all types of people using whatsapp who can't even use email. They send attachments and photos of bills etc and actually no longer need email. I don't think anyone is going to use BBM on a non blackberry phone. It's just going to dilute their brand exclusivity to the few customers they have left or to corporate guys using BBM groups for discussing projects and other confidential things.
  16. Apple Announces iPhone 5S & iPhone 5C

Getting into cheaper variants would be the end of Apple, because the only reason they sell is due to their premium image which strictly requires high prices (and exceptional quality and branding of-course - but that is a given with Apple). If their products become 'too affordable' by the masses there will be no aspirational appeal and they will completely lose out to the Androids. I completely agree about the screen though, they should have increased the size to 4.7" and resolution to 1080p. But then, they are probably planning that as your next reason to upgrade to iPhone 6 !
  17. Dhiraj bhai, the happiness on your face is priceless ! (2nd pic) Do post a detailed review here or on TBP for us mortals who can only dream of Harleys.
  18. Android 4.4 KitKat

^ yes. It's rumoured to be an LG model and has just cleared FCC - see here and here 5 inch screen, but overall size smaller than Nexus 4. Camera sensor seems really big in the video/pic.
  19. Seems like a lot of these online shopping sites are getting worse day by day - after having gotten us hooked to online shopping though ! Any one has any idea of Airtel online Shop (shop.airtel.com) ? I want to buy a blackberry z10 battery which is only available on this shop. BTW, when I reached the payment page I saw it will be billed as "infibeam.com"
  20. Android 4.4 KitKat

    ^ Beautiful !
  21. Android 4.4 KitKat

And after flashing the wrong ROM : Kit Kat Brick banta hai
  22. Android 4.4 KitKat

Great, now we can soon expect next version to be named Jalebi in tie up with Bikaner Sweets
  23. Rs 990 Plan seems pretty good - 28 GB at 8 Mbps. I think I'll shift to this plan now from my current 2 Mbps Rs 800-900 plan (30 GB or so I think)
  24. iOS 6.1 Jailbreak Finally arrived

I don't know anything about jailbreak, but to get admin rights on your laptop you can do the following two steps: 1. Disconnect from the domain (remove LAN cable or disconnect wifi) 2. Boot any Linux Live CD or Live USB and mount your windows partition then cd into windows/sytem32/sam run chntpw sam (download it from here ) and blank out the Admin password. Or you can download a very small bootable cd/usb image with only chntpw from the linked site and boot from that. For permanent sort of solution, Login as Administrator and create a new account with Admin rights. When you connect your laptop to domain your admin password will get reset whenever your domain admin changes the password. But you will mostly be able to keep using the new account you created. The password for the new account will need to confirm to your domain policy (like minimum 8 chars, at least one numeric and one special char etc and to be changed every 1 month etc)
