  4. [vIa:dth-radio-iptv] Bharti, R-ADAG rivalry spills over to DTH arena NEW DELHI: After telecom, the corporate rivalry between R-ADAG and Bharti has spilled over to the DTH arena. And early indications are that this will be a sizzling hot battle as well. Even before Bharti Airtel could launch its DTH operations, R-ADAG’s DTH company Big TV tried to steal the thunder from its launch marketing campaign by releasing advertisiments that closely resembled the latter’s teaser ads. Mid last week, Bharti Airtel had released its teaser advertisements with the tag line, “see you at home soon” and “see you at home on October 9” without mentioning the name of the company or the product offering that was being advertised. Reliance ADAG’s DTH arm Big TV a few days ago launched its own ads with a similar ad and tag line which focused on its pay per view movie channels which it plans to introduce during the festive season. Both the DTH players logos use red-and-white colours, which added further to the confusion. DTH blogs across the Net expressed utter confusion about who’s advertisements the teasers belonged to, as both looked very similar and used the same tag line. When contacted, Big TV CEO Arun Kapoor refused to comment. Bharti Airtel CEO & JMD Manoj Kohli said, “We had decided to release the teaser advertisements during the Navratri period. Also, we had decided the media launch on the same day (Tuesday) as per our original plan. We will launch the main campaign on October 9 as indicated by the teaser ads. So everything is as per our plan. We believe we have a superior product. We have heard all about these imitations but nothing has deviated us from our plans.” Bharti digital television’s ad agency JWT refused to comment. Madhukar Kamath, the MD & CEO of Mudra Communications who manages the Big TV account said: “Big TV is a superior product. We look for every single consumer connect opposrtunity to drive home our superior product quality, and we will continue to tap whatever similar opportunities are available in future as well.” In the past, cola majors Coca-Cola and Pepsi have indulged in advertising wars often with spoofs directed at each others’ tag-lines and story boards. 12. NEW DELHI: The much sought-after 3G iPhone and BlackBerry may soon be available in the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) network. The country’s largest telecom service provider, BSNL, is in talks with Apple and BlackBerry to launch the services in India in its own network. According to BSNL executives, talks with BlackBerry are at an advanced stage and this handset is likely to be available to BSNL’s customers by the year-end. On the other hand, subscribers on the PSU’s networks may have to wait longer for access the 3G iPhone as talks with Apple are still lingering in preliminary stage, BSNL executives added. If BSNL were to tie-up with Apple, the state owned telco would be the third player after Airtel and Vodafone to offer 3G iPhone in India. However, BSNL will be the first player in the Indian market to offer 3G service on the iPhone. Airtel and Vodafone will only have 3G spectrum if they bag these radio frequencies in the upcoming auctions. The government has already granted BSNL 3G radio frequencies and the telco is expected to launch high-end services on its 3G network early next year. “We are in talks with Apple to launch 3G iPhone in our network since we will be the first ones to launch the 3G services here. We are also awaiting the launch of BlackBerry in our network by end of this year,”said BSNL CMD, Kuldeep Goyal. [ViA: ET]

  14. SAN DIEGO, Oct. 2, 2008- With the latest edition of Sony’s Reader Digital Book, announced today, readers can truly let their fingers do the walking. An interactive touch screen display allows for the most intuitive digital reading experience to date. The new model, PRS-700, will join the PRS-505 model in the Reader family to give consumers a choice of how they would like to read electronically. Svelte and stylish, the newest Reader still sports the dimensions of a slimmed down paperback book. The textured black casing and soft black cover contribute to its envy-inspiring design. And, at about 10 ounces, it’s the perfect way to carry all of your favorite books with you wherever you go. A sizeable six-inch display with touch screen capability allows booklovers to flip pages with the slide of a finger. In addition, readers can easily search terms within a document or book, create notes using the virtual keyboard and highlight text with the included stylus pen. Five pre-set text sizes are available so readers can find the one most comfortable for them and for those who need an even closer look, zooming in is as easy as tapping the screen. Expanded memory offers enough capacity to store about 350 average digital books. 19. Source: Daily News & Analysis NEW DELHI: A decision to permit news in private FM radio stations may be taken by the government around end of this year, almost three years after the Prime Minister’s Information, Communication and Entertainment Committee okayed the proposal. Sources said only reading of news put out by Doordarshan, All India Radio and accredited local and international newswire agencies will be allowed. While news is allowed in private television channels, FM radio stations can only broadcast entertainment and music content. News is however allowed on All India Radio (AIR). Top I&B officials were not available for comment. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), which regulates both telecom and media sectors, had earlier this year recommended news in private FM radio, with some restrictions. It is likely that the information and broadcasting (I& ministry may accept the Trai recommendation on the matter. But, a view on allowing news and current affairs in private FM will have to be taken by the Union Cabinet. If the government goes with the Trai recommendation, private FM radio stations would be able to access news content from select sources. In September, the Union Cabinet had taken the decision to allow FM broadcasters to set up subsidiaries and demerge their businesses. The radio industry had called it a welcome step and had said that allowing news may be the next move. Also, even as the industry had expected relaxation on the ceiling in foreign investment in FM radio, it continues at 20%. The I&B ministry had several months ago decided to rationalise the foreign investment cap across media segments. But, inter-ministerial consultation on the matter is still not completed. Perhaps, by the end of this year, FDI ceiling across many media segments, including FM radio and direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting, may be increased. Private FM radio players have been seeking reforms in the sector for financial viability and diversity in content to be able to reach out to all categories of audience. The regulator had observed in its recommendation earlier this year that, “one of the barriers for further growth identified by the Authority during the consultation process relates to the restriction of existing guidelines that do not permit news and current affairs on FM radio broadcast.” Trai had added that “information requirements of large section of unserved population and those who lack access to information through other means like internet, television services, etc can be conveniently met without any cost to the receiving population only through FM radio services.”
  20. Ballmer: Microsoft will soon release 'Windows Cloud' OS Microsoft CEO reveals details of an upcoming operating system for developers writing cloud-computing applications By Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service October 01, 2008 Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed a few details on Wednesday of a forthcoming operating system that will help developers write Internet-based applications. Within a month, Microsoft will unveil what Ballmer called "Windows Cloud." The OS, which will likely have a different name, is intended for developers writing cloud-computing applications, said Ballmer, speaking in London to an auditorium of IT managers at a Microsoft-sponsored conference. Cloud computing is a term often applied to programs that are presented in a Web browser, but the actual computing is performed at a distant datacenter. Ballmer was short on details, saying more information would spoil the announcement. Windows Cloud is a separate project from Windows 7, the OS Microsoft is developing to succeed Windows Vista. Companies such as Google and Salesforce.com have embraced the concept of delivering software over the Internet, as it can mean lower costs and less maintenance for those who use the applications. Microsoft, which has built its fortunes on desktop-based software, has been anxious to show it also has plans for adapting its software for the Internet. Ballmer was quick to point out that Microsoft doesn't envision products such as the Office productivity suite to move entirely off desktop PCs and onto the Internet. But Microsoft is working on a service that would let people do "light editing" of Office documents at places such as a public Internet kiosk, Ballmer said. "That's all I can say on that," Ballmer said. "Otherwise, we have no drum-roll announcement in a month." Microsoft is developing online components for many of its products such as its SharePoint collaboration software; the Exchange e-mail server and its Dynamics Customer Relationship Management software, Ballmer said. Microsoft calls its strategy "software plus services," where its core applications are augmented by Web-based functionality. Microsoft has been facing increasing pressure from Google, which offers a Web-based productivity suite called Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Ballmer was dismissive of Google, saying Docs and Spreadsheets has "relatively low usage" and that users want richer features in an office software package. "We want software more powerful than software that runs in a browser," Ballmer said. [vIa:iNfOwoRlD] Images [images Coutesy: arstechnica.com]
  21. LG Launches Artistically Inspired Handset, Renoir Seoul, Korea, October 3, 2008- LG Electronics (LG), a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, announced the official launch of its LG-KC910, a slim yet feature-packed full touchscreen 8 megapixel multimedia phone. This artistic new handset, known as Renoir, goes on sale in Europe in early October and has a large palate of features like Wi-Fi, Dolby® Mobile from Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB), and camera capabilities that even surpass those found on standalone digital cameras. “Renoir is much more than a camera phone. It truly puts everything at your fingertips and provides a multi-sensorial experience through sight, sound and touch,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The 8 megapixel camera is only one aspect of the phone. Its unique combination of features, including a full touchscreen interface, Dolby Mobile for Music and built in support for Wi-Fi and A-GPS, allow Renoir to be used in equally unique ways.” Focus on Touch-Enhanced High Quality Camera Renoir takes super-sharp 8 megapixel pictures that can be edited in camera and are instantly ready for sharing online or printing. The phone’s list of features includes some that are usually only found on extremely high-end standalone cameras, such as Schneider-Kreuznach certified optics, a Xenon flash, auto and manual focus, sensitivity up to ISO 1600 and geo-tagging. Renoir takes the full advantage capabilities as a full touchscreen 8 megapixel phone, with unique touch-enhanced features. One feature, Touch Shot, makes it easy to get the right shot every time by allowing photographers to focus on any object by touching it on screen. The shutter fires automatically when the user’s finger is removed from the screen. Touch Shot, a first for a mobile phone, also reduces camera shake and eliminates the need to search for the shutter release button. One major advantage Renoir has over standalone digital cameras is its ability to connect to the latest 3G HSDPA networks and Wi-Fi. This eliminates the need to wait to share pictures with the world. They can be instantly and effortlessly uploaded and shared with the world from almost anywhere. Geo-tagging, enabled by Renoir’s A-GPS capabilities, makes it easy to keep track of where pictures were taken and plot them using online mapping websites. Special shot modes give pictures that special look that usually requires a professional touch. Beauty Shot removes spots and imperfections from people’s faces, while also making them appear brighter and clearer in photos. The feature is smart enough to recognize faces and only apply the effect to the right areas. Art Shot allows users to apply a number of creative preset effects, from common changes like black and white to less common and more nuanced ones like warm or cool tone. Share in an Unrivalled Multimedia Experience Renoir delivers a full multimedia experience that stimulates the senses. . Renoir is also the first handset created for the worldwide market to include Dolby Mobile. This integrated suite of audio processing technologies from Dolby Laboratories brings depth and richness as well as clean, powerful bass to deliver a more immersing and engaging listening experience for music. Renoir records video better than any other mobile phone, with the ability to capture super-high-quality 120 frame per second slow-motion video or to compress longer events using five frame per second time lapse recording. A noise-free microphone ensures that audio is just as crisp as the video it accompanies. Built-in support for DivX and Xvid encoded video means that Renoir can provide hours of entertainment straight out of the box. Just as with photos, Renoir can upload any user generated content it creates including audio, video or text, over 3G HSDPA networks or Wi-Fi. Renoir is ready for the complete web 2.0 experience, fully able to use web-based applications, including those that require GPS location. Touch the Intuitive, Customizable Interface Renoir works just like people think. Its user interface is both intuitive and easily customizable, based around a full touchscreen that provides the perfect canvas for multimedia. When first turned on, the handset greets users with a screen that is home to numerous widgets. These can be selected from a wide range of choices and dragged into place. Standing out among these are Renoir’s online widgets, which use live content from the web to provided up-to-the-second information on things like local weather. For applications like text messaging, Renoir allows users to choose what kind of input interface they want to use – either an onscreen QWERTY keypad, similar to a computer keyboard, or an alpha-numeric keypad, like what is found on most mobile phones. Another unique feature enabled by Renoir’s touchscreen is its picture-based speed dial, which allows users to quickly scroll through contacts and bring up more detailed information with just the touch of a finger. LG chose the name Renoir for Viewty’s successor to reflect its personality and level of multimedia sophistication. The handset’s designers drew inspiration from the way the impressionist painter of the same name used light and color to capture scenes that were beautifully rich in meaning. After making its initial debut in Europe in October of this year, Renoir will come out in Asia, Latin America and CIS in November, the Middle East and Africa in December and China in January of 2009. The 13.95 mm Renoir will be available in titan black and other color options depending on operator. LG will also launch another 8 megapixel handset in October, its super slim 13.70 mm slider, the LG-KC780. This phone will have a number of built-in features that make it a great on-the-go companion for taking portraits. [vIa:LG] @Honest Please Update the title of the topic to "Launched"

And, without subsidies, it should be similar in the rest of the world. So, there you have it. LG KP500 is rather cheap handset among it’s full touchscreen peers. But, I guess, a good option for a budget conscious full touchscreen phone fan. [vIa: uNWirEdvIeW]
