NEW DELHI: State-owned telco BSNL’s workers’ unions have threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government goes ahead with the telecom operator’s IPO as well as with its proposal to merge ITI with BSNL. “BSNL is in a financial crisis and any move to merge ITI, a loss-making company, with BSNL will have a disastrous effect on both,” a statement by BSNL Employees Union said. Earlier, the government had twice put on hold plans to list BSNL due to strong protest by its workers and Left parties. However, having won the trust vote in Parliament, the government is looking at reviving BSNL’s IPO plans. “The contention that listing is necessary for expansion and development as also grant of Navaratna status is not acceptable. Other PSUs including HAL have been granted Navaratna without listing. As such, the arguments put forth for IPO in BSNL, are nothing but lame arguments to disinvest BSNL and gradually privatise, as in the case of Videsh Sanchar Nigam (VSNL),” the statement added. After its meeting on Thursday, the joint forum of BSNL associations/ unions of three lakh workers forwarded its resolution of going on an indefinite strike if the government proceeds with the merger and IPO to the Prime Minister, communications minister, department of telecom secretary and BSNL CMD. The joint forum will meet again to review the situation on August 1, 2008.

Nokia Knocks Off Blackberry Connect!
@ksh@T replied to Honest's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Purchasers of Nokia’s latest Eseries devices may be a bit distressed to learn that BlackBerry Connect will no longer be updated for Nokia’s S60 devices, effective immediately. Just after a recent update was issued for the latest E90 firmware Nokia made the announcement and was hardly indirect with its reasoning for the move. Nokia’s Simon Ainslie had this to say: Perhaps the most confusing part of this move is the simple fact that Nokia’s OEM email support is, well, shoddy at best. Unreliable, poorly-executed and horrible are more descriptive terms that have been tossed around from time to time. The integrated POP / IMAP support is just north of unusable. Nokia’s Mail for Exchange client historically hasn’t been much better, though the most recent client addresses many issues of the past. Mail for Exchange however, as the name might dictate, only supports Exchange email. This might be fine if you use your device strictly for work (and your company uses Exchange) but in the day and age of “convergence”, most people like to have access to personal email as well. Nokia’s recent “Nokia Email” beta does show signs of life, though slight. All this aside, if your company uses RIM’s email system and you had plans to snag an E71 instead of a BlackBerry… Think again. -

Bangalore, July 31: In recent months, personal computer maker Dell, has been testing a digital music player that could go on sale as early as September, the Wall Street Journal newspaper said, citing several Dell officials. Dell’s new foray would put it into an Apple-led market that has defied assaults. Companies like Microsoft and Sony have tried — and failed — to make a dent in the market dominated by Apple’s iPod players and iTunes store, the Journal said. The music player which Dell has been testing features a small navigation screen and basic button controls to scroll through music play lists, the Journal reported. It would connect to online music services via a Wi-Fi internet connection, and Dell would likely price the model at less than USD 100, the Journal said. Dell’s first foray into the music market in 2003 was a huge disappointment. It withdrew from the music-player market after its DJ Ditty player failed to make major inroads. This time, if the company goes ahead with the music player, the strategy is different, Michael Tatelman, Dell’s vice president of consumer sales said, according to the paper. Instead of simply selling a piece of hardware tied to someone else’s music service, as it did in 2003, Dell is working on software for a range of portable PCs that will let users download and organise music and movies from various online sources, the paper added.

Reliance Communications Starts Exclusive Discussions With Mtn
@ksh@T posted a topic in Reliance Communications
NEW DELHI: Within a day of Bharti Airtel pulling out of negotiations to acquire an estimated 50 billion dollar MTN, Anil Ambani group company Reliance Communications is understood to have started discussions for a possible tie up with the South African telecom entity. Reliance Communications officials both in (Delhi and Mumbai) could not be contacted for comments despite numerous attempts. Bharti Airtel decided to pull out of the negotiations as MTN had proposed a structure which would have made Bharti Airtel a subsidiary of the South African company, contrary to the agreed terms between the two firms. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal today reported that the Reliance Communications is in talks to combine with South African cell phone company MTN Group, after Bharti Airtel pulled out of negotiation with MTN. Quoting people familiar with the matter the daily said "the discussions may go nowhere and precise details of the Reliance tie-up being discussed could not be learned, though one person said a deal may be structured as a purchase of Reliance by MTN." The daily further added that a combination of MTN and Reliance Communications would create a global wireless juggernaut, larger even than developed-market giants such as AT&T Inc. Even amidst Bharti and MTN being engaged in talks, rumours had surfaced about rival bids being launched by other entities, including China Mobile, Indian-origin Arun Sarin-led British telecom giant Vodafone, Egypt's Orascom, UAE's Etisalat, Germany's Deutsche Telekom and Russia's Vimpelcom. However, all these rumours came to nothing with all the rumoured suitors mostly denying any such moves. 'Reliance Communications favourite in merger talks with MTN' LONDON: India's Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications is the favourite in global merger talks with the African mobile phone operator MTN, after Bharti Airtel of India withdrew from the race, media reported said on Sunday. MTN and Bharti fell out over the structure of a combined group. According to a report in The Sunday Times, Arun Sarin, the chief executive of Vodafone, will tell shareholders on Tuesday that he will not be drawn into bidding for MTN after the African mobile-hone operator abandoned plans to merge with Bharti Airtel. The London daily quoted sources as saying that Bhartis domestic rival, Reliance Communications, is the favourite to land MTN. Vodafone had considered a 20 billion pounds bid for the company, which has 68 million customers in 21 African and Middle Eastern markets, before publicly declaring two weeks ago that it would not proceed. Instead, it is still keen to buy out its partner Telkom from their joint venture Vodacom in South Africa, a deal that crumbled late last year. According to the report, Sarin is keeping a keen eye on China's telecoms market, which is restructuring to create stronger competitors to China Mobile, in which Vodafone has a 3.3 per cent stake. China Mobile, which is recruiting seven million new subscribers every month, will absorb China Tietong Telecommunications, a fixed-line operator. The Chinese government plans to issue three 3G licences once the reorganisation is complete. -
