  3. NEW DELHI: Mobile operators Airtel and Tata Indicom have slashed their pre-paid tariff rates from on Friday and launched new schemes in order to retain their existing customers and woo new clients. Bharti has announced that from today onwards, all its pre-paid customers in Delhi and NCR region would be able to make local calls to any mobile or landline at 50 paisa per minute by recharging with Rs 49. The recharge would have a validity of 30 days but would not have any talk-time, it added. Similarly, Tata Indicom has announced that with a recharge of Rs 499, Tata Indicom prepaid customers can make unlimited free local and STD calls to all tata phones across the country. Also, with this recharge, which has a validity period of 30 days, customers can make local and STD calls to any other networks at 50 paisa and Rs 1.5 per minute respectively, said a company release.
  4. Shyam Telelink selects 3 vendors for equipment JAIPUR: Jaipur-based Shyam Telelink Limited (STL), the telecom subsidiary of Russia’s Sistema, is planning to invest $5 billion over next year to launch its services in 19 telecommunication circles across 27 states in India. STL CEO T. Narasimhan told ET that the company is eyeing a subscriber base of 60 million by 2017. “We are planning to start our roll out from Rajasthan in September 2008 followed by launching services in all spectrum allocated circles. The department of telecommunications (DoT) has allocated the CDMA 800 MHz radio frequencies, ahead of other new entrants. The first stage of roll out will be completed by March 2009 covering 94.5% population of the country,” he said. The company has chosen three vendors for supply of equipment to construct mobile network across the country. The vendors — ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei Technologies — have been chosen in a closed tender. In a regulatory filing, STL said that these vendors each vendor would be allocated a certain geographical region for the deployment of the equipment. “The contract includes equipment delivery (including base stations, main radio-and switching subsystems and other auxiliary equipment) and provision of services related to network design, installation, start-up and commissioning,” the filing added. Mr Narasimhan said that this pan India plan is ambitious and the company is rapidly ramping up manpower acquisition. “The launch of our services will generate direct employment to more than eight thousand professionals and indirect employment to at least a million people,” he said. The company owns a developed telecommunications infrastructure in state of Rajasthan, which includes 4,000 kilometres of fibre-optic lines. It provides services to over 1 lakh subscribers in the state as at the end of March 2008.
  5. Govt flip-flop on BlackBerry continues NEW DELHI: In the latest twist to the BlackBerry saga, communications minister A Raja on Friday said that the government was looking at solutions offered by third parties to address security concerns associated with BlackBerry services. Mr Raja’s comments come within days of the telecom secretary Siddharth Behura stating that there was no threat from BlackBerry services and the government had no objection if an operator wanted to offer these services. Mr Behura’s statement was an about turn from the DoT’s earlier stance, where the communications ministry had issued an ultimatum to RIM (the maker of BlackBerry smart phones) that it would have to provide encryption solutions to security agencies here if it wanted to continue operations in India. Encryption solutions will allow security agencies to monitor emails and data sent between BlackBerry devices. “We cannot throw (out) Blackberry services, but the question is how to keep this service, while taking care of security measures at the same time. We do feel security measures can be taken care of with wider consultations. They (RIM) are offering some solution. Notwithstanding their solutions, we are finding other solutions from other companies,” Mr Raja told reporters on Friday. India’s security agencies have been insisting that the government force Canada’s RIM, the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, to put a system in place that will allow them to intercept data sent through these handsets as they fear that these services could be exploited by terrorists. Their demand stemmed from the fact that email communication between BlackBerry users here bypasses the networks of Indian mobile operators providing this service. “There should be a single point of delivery system for the entire BlackBerry traffic in India and the traffic originating and terminating in India should not travel outside,” security agencies had said in their latest note to the DoT. Currently, India has over 1,15, 000 BlackBerry customers between five operators – Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, BPL, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular. When asked on the 3G policy, Mr Raja said that the guidelines for both 3G and Wimax would be out within a week. “Broad guidelines for 3G have been devised and they need some inputs from the finance ministry and after that the guidelines will be sent to the Telecom Commission and I expect the norms to be announced within a week,” he added.

  7. CHANDIGARH: As part of its strategy to consolidate its position in convergence field, mobile handset maker Nokia India on Wednesday announced the launch of new mobile phone 'Nokia 6220 classic' with 5 mega pixel camera here. "The new handset is designed as per the changing requirements of the mobile handset users," Nokia India, Head GTM, Program Portfoilo, Raghuvesh Sarup said here today. Priced at Rs. 19,959, the new set is fitted with Xenon flash, autofocus, Carl Zesis optics and is A-GPS enabled which would allow sharing of photographs. In addition to it, it has Nokia Maps 2.0 which would allow users to see the detailed image of a particular place of a city. "Presently, we are offering navigation maps of nine cities including Delhi, Jaipur, Ahemdabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata," he said. The mobile phone also has HSDPA data connection for fast web browsing and downloading and Adaptive multi rate speech coding technology. Nokia 6220 is also equipped with Nokia MBlog application which allows maintaining a blog directly from handset. Sharing the details regarding growing use of mobile camera phones, he said the size of camera phones in global market would grow to one billion by 2011. However, he did not have any data relating to the growth of mobile camera users in Indian market. He further said that Nokia had adopted a three pronged strategy for mobile imaging and the first strategy was that collaboration was required among companies which were in the field of mobile imaging. "Second strategy is to launch superior kind of camera solutions and finally offer better consumer experience," he said.

  10. No security threat from Blackberry, no prior nod needed: Govt NEW DELHI: Sweeping aside the security concerns, an issue that generated a major controversy leading to protests from Canada, the government today gave a go-ahead to the operations of Blackberry services in India saying there is no security threat from it. "People are buying Blackberry. There is no threat from Blackberry services," Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura told reporters on the sidelines of a telecom summit here. The Blackberry services had come under the government scanner with the Ministry of Home Affairs and security agencies asking the vendor not to list any fresh subscriber till a server is placed in India to monitor contents. Security agencies are of the view that unintercepted data through the network of Research-In-Motion (RIM), the makers of Balckberry, could be used by terrorists. Asked if the government would give approval to companies that have applied for starting Blackberry services which included the Tatas, he said, "BSNL also wants to start the service. There is no permission needed for starting value- added services. We have not given permission to anybody, we have not disallowed anybody." "So there is no question of giving permission to anybody. We do not consider any application for value-added services or Blackberry services. We have given permission to none.. they do not have to seek our permission to start any service," he said. He further added, "Security people have raised certain issues and there is discussion is going on... there will be continued discussions."

  15. KOLKATA: The high-voltage Indian cellphone market has undergone a fresh round of shake-up. The latest ORG data reveals that while Nokia is enjoying the leadership position, there has been a change in the position for the second slot. Korean vendor Samsung has now replaced Sony Ericsson to emerge as the second largest player in the market. Recently released ORG report shows that Sony Ericsson has lost marketshare from 8.1% in March to 5.8% in May. 21. Datacom-HFCL legal battle may spoil party before it starts NEW DELHI: Videocon-promoted telecom venture Datacoms roll-out plans envisaging an investment of up to Rs 15,000 crore may get upset with its minority shareholder HFCL preparing to fight a legal battle for alleged violation of shareholders agreement between the two. HFCL-backed Jumbo Techno Services, which sold majority shareholding of 64 per cent in Datacom Solutions to Videocon's Dhoots, is understood to have raised serious issues relating to corporate governance and has said that major decisions have been taken by the company without consulting the minority partner. When contacted HFCL promoter Mahendr Nahata declined to give details of the fight but said, "We are going to fight for our legal rights." Fearing legal action by Nahata, Videocon has filed a caveat in Delhi High Court against any judicial order prior to hearing. The company was recently given pan-India licence for offering telecom services and has also received spectrum (radio frequency) in some of the circles. Datacom, which is also scouting for a foreign partner, may require about Rs 15,000 crore to roll out network at all- India level. With a legal battle looming in the backdrop, finances from both Indian banks and institutions as well as foreign equity may become difficult, sources said. The new players are already under huge pressure as most of the market has been captured by the existing cellular operators and any legal battle on top of it may affect the valuation of Datacom adversely, they said.
