  1. NEW DELHI: Country's largest telecom operator BSNL will launch prepaid international calling card aimed at Indian expatriate community as well as Indian tourists abroad. According to BSNL officials, the company will be launching the card in six regions, namely the US and Canada, the Middle east, South East Asia, Western Europe, UK and Australia. The card would enable users to call from any landline, mobile or any voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) enabled device from these countries. The PSU has also invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies or consortium of companies to sell and market its international cards which would be available both in India as well as abroad, according to BSNL officials. The successful bidders would have to set up their network up to Indian ILD CLS (Cable landing station)/POP (point of presence). BSNL has separate bilateral relationship with global carriers for outbound and inbound international voice traffic. Some of the overseas traffic is being routed through other Indian ILDOs also. The company wants to route all the overseas calling card traffic through its ILD Gateways. The PSU operator at present has four ILD gateways and plans to increase it further. Many private operators have already launched similar cards targetting the Indian expatriate community.

  10. NEW DELHI: Tata Communications said on Tuesday it has agreed to buy a further 30 percent stake in South Africa's No. 2 fixed-line operator Neotel from two South African state-run firms. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Tata Communications said the deal would leave it and another Tata group firm, Tata Africa, holding 56 percent of the telecoms operator. "The agreement is subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions precedent, some of which have a period of up to 180 days to be fulfilled," the company said in a statement, without elaborating. Tata Communications is part of India's Tata group. Neotel, which is also managed by the Tatas, was launched in August 2006 and is a competitor to Africa's largest telephone group, Telkom.
  11. NEW DELHI Thanks to the ubiquitous Internet, your telephone bill can be drastically trimmed. The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) claims that STD calls can be offered at 15 paise/minute and local calls can be free on the same network, if the government permits unrestricted domestic internet telephony. The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) claim that they can offer free local calls in case of own network (that is, within the network of a particular internet service provider) and 10 paise per minute for calls on other IP network. “ISD call rates can further come down to 50 paise per minute on same IP network, and in other IP network 75 paise. And if you want to call on a mobile or fixed line from an IP phone, STD call rates can be offered at 50 paise per minute,” the ISPAI claims. The association has members such as Sify, Net4, HFCL, HCL Infinet, RailTel, Spectranet and Tulip IT Services. Currently, STD call rates on mobile networks are about Re 1 per minute while local rates range from 80 paise to Rs 1. Operators such as Airtel and Vodafone charge Re 1.50 and Re 2.75 per minute for a STD call whereas a call from India to the US or UK costs cheaper at 95 paise per minute, or lower through the internet protocol (IP) telephony. The same call to the US or UK through a mobile cost Rs 6.40. Interestingly, many telecom operators currently route their domestic calls through the IP network. Says ISPAI president Rajesh Charria, “As admitted by many operators, they are routing the call through the IP networks and still charging exorbitant call rates.” Global giants such as Google, AT&T, Cisco, Microsoft and Nortel are backing the ISPs in their demand for allowing unrestricted IP telephony. It’s interesting to note that IP telephony in most developed markets such as the US, Singapore is unregulated, resulting in drastic fall in call rates. For instance, a $2.5 (Rs 100) calling card offers a 30 minute call to India from US which comes to a per minute rate of Rs 3.33 for an ISD call from US to India. Whereas in India, the mobile operators offer the same call at double the price for a call to the US. Some others offer India calling at 4.2 cents per minute or Rs 1.60 per minute, almost one-sixth the ISD rate offered by operators in India

  18. RCom, MTN may clinch deal in 1st week of July NEW DELHI: Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications and South Africa's MTN are likely to finalise a deal by the first week of July, with the former expected to hold about 40 per cent stake in the estimated $70 billion merged entity. According to sources close to the development, both companies have been engaged in exclusive talks since the last week of May. A final shape to the deal may surface at the end of the 45-day exclusivity agreement that ends on July 8. Asked about the details of the merged entity, sources said final details are still being worked out, but hinted that Anil Ambani would end up holding between 34 to 40 per cent stake in the merged entity in which Reliance Communications would become MTN's subsidiary. MTN is also understood to have taken a legal opinion on the issue raised by elder Ambani sibling Mukesh, who had claimed right of first refusal in case Reliance Communications sells majority stake in favour of MTN. The respective teams from MTN and Reliance Communications have travelled to India and South Africa for carrying out due diligence of the companies, sources said, adding that the negotiations so far have been progressing well. Earlier in a letter to MTN, RIL had warned that it would take legal recourse and claim damages if MTN became party to violation of the right of first refusal. Sources said a team comprising over six executives of MTN had visited Reliance Communications headquarter in Mumbai about 10 days ago as part of the due diligence. Reliance Communications shares is ruling around Rs 587.90, down by Rs 3.40 today. The MTN Group had posted a 42 per cent increase in revenues to 73.1 billion rand for the 12-month period ended December 31, 2007 from 51.6 billion rand a year-ago. The Group had also declared a dividend of 136 cents per share, which was the highest dividend ever by the Group.

  20. NEW DELHI: State-run MTNL has floated a Rs 250 crore tender for building a network based on Internet Protocol infrastructure to provide convergent services integrating data, voice and video. The project -- MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) based IP network infrastructure would also be a primary source of Internet bandwidth for ISPs, corporates, institutions, government bodies and retail users. The infrastructure would also allow MTNL to introduce additional services such as bandwidth-on-demand, TV Broadcast with minimum 5,000 channels (SDTV as well as HDTV), VOIP and others over the same network. MTNL sources said the PSU is poised to offer a variety of high-speed data and video services and for that it needs such infrastructure. Earlier this year, Chinese company Huawei rolled out MTNL's MPLS Backbone Network in India to provide the Indian users with a variety of quality carrier-class services including Internet, VoIP and IPTV. The deployment of the MPLS network would help MTNL transform its legacy TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) network into networks which would support more services such as NGN, 3G, VPN (Virtual Private Network). The project is all set to expand extending the MPLS services access to the business users and carry all value added, triple play services, successfully running for select customer on IP MPLS Backbone. Almost all private mobile players have MPLS infrastructure. With its fixed line subscribers base declining and competition from private players on mobile services, MTNL faces an uphill climb to hold on to its fixed-line subscriber base in the competitive Mumbai and New Delhi markets. To beat all these, it has launched commercial IPTV services in India and is betting on the introduction of triple-play services.
