CHENNAI: A spokesman of mobile telephony major Vodafone on Friday denied charges of cruelty to its mascot pug. The charges had been levelled by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). "It is clear from the filming that the dog could not have been subjected to any cruelty during the filming," a Vodafone spokesman said. In its notice sent to Vodafone April 25, AWBI said: "The pet dog was made to run, gallop and chase the school van for a long time on a public road. Thereby, the dog was made to undergo severe pain and suffering due to the exhaustion caused by chasing (the bus)." Officials in Nirvana Films, which had made the ad for Vodafone, said: "The AWBI is unaware of modern techniques of filmmaking. No single shot of a television commercial lasts more than 15 seconds at the most. Therefore, to suggest that the dog suffered due to exhaustion by chasing a bus is taking things a bit too far." R. Kumar, an established television commercial maker here, said the truth could be established if the original canned shots were to be analysed scientifically. "On the basis of experience, I can say that most filmmakers do not take a shot lasting more than 10 seconds - be it a television commercial, or a feature film. "The truth can be established beyond doubt by submission of canned shots for analysis. Techniques of carbon dating and forensics can find out the periodicity of the shots, the time taken between the breaks thereby clearly judge whether the animal in question was exhausted or not." The pug, Rocky - the mascot of Vodafone and its earlier avatar Hutch - was certified fit by a veterinary doctor after the filming was completed several weeks ago in South Africa, Nirvana Films' counsel B. Menon said. "We have sought time from AWBI to explain the issue in person and are hopeful for an early meeting for resolution of this matter," a Vodafone spokesman added

Luxury brands are making a beeline into the country, but there could be a competition from the hometurf at least in one segment — mobile phone. A Bangalore-based entity is engaged in designing a new luxury mobile phone, which is tentatively priced at Rs 3 lakh ($7500) for a handset. If things go according to plan, then the launch could happen during Diwali. Without divulging the name of the company or the people behind it, Sandalwood Partners MD Bob Kondamoori said that there is a sizeable market in India for luxury mobile phones. The phone will be designed in Bangalore with the manufacturing likely to be done out of Italy. The people behind this firm are professionals who have worked out with marquee brands such as Louis Vuitton and Ritz Carlton. Sandalwood Partners, an early stage VC firm has invested in this company with an initial capital of $2 million. It plans to invest around $10 million over a period of time. Mr Kondamoori said that luxury mobile phone market in India may see a slow uptake and firm plans to sell around 10,000 units in the first year of operation. Globally, there are a few luxury mobile phone brands, some which are part of the handset manufacturers, others as standalone entities. Nokia’s luxury division, Vertu, has handsets in the price range of $310,000, which are available in very limited pieces of 8-10. Others like SonyEricsson, Motorola have handsets priced at $300,000 and $51,800, respectively. Besides, there are other models which are priced in the range of $1,900 to $2,700. India is also the home to around 150 million mobile users and is one of the fastest growing market globally. It is estimated that this market will cross 500-million users by 2010-11. Mr Kondamoori said there is a huge appetite for brands in India and felt that there is no competition from upmarket brands in the country.

Govt assures Canada on Blackberry Admits security concerns raised by law enforcement agencies on the use of Blackberry services, India has assured Canada that commercial interest of RIM, the maker of Blackberry, would be kept in mind while taking any final decision. "We are fully aware of the sensitivity and confidentiality of our conversation with RIM and would like to assure them that we respect their commercial interest and would do nothing to jeopardize the same," Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura said in a letter to foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon for communication to Canada. He said the Government hoped that it would be able to resolve the issue satisfactorily and speedily. "The signs are encouraging." The Canadian High Commissioner David M Malone had written to Communications and IT Minister A Raja on April 17 on the issue of lawful interception of information as related to Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM). He had said the issue to be understood was who in the Government of India was empowered to resolve this issue. Malone had written, "This is also necessary in order to ensure that right representative from RIM are at the table. The discussions managed by Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to date have inspired little confidence that those involved on the Indian side are actually empowered to settle the matter as Indian Government's demand of RIM keep expanding while media leaks proliferate, some of them very damaging from a security perspective and sourced by the journalist involved directly to the DoT." "Potential terrorists are now aware, because of these leaks, of technical issues unknown to most of us previously." -
Haryana Invokes Bank Guarantee Of Reliance Communications
@ksh@T posted a topic in Reliance Communications
CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has invoked Rs 1.5 crore bank guarantee of Reliance Communications for not providing it with bandwidth as agreed upon for the State Wide Area Network programme. "The company has failed to provide free bandwidth to the several government departments as per agreement. Therefore we have invoked its bank guarantee amounting of Rs 1.5 crore," a senior official of Haryana Information Technology department said on the condition of anonymity. However, he further said the government had not encashed the said guarantee amount. According to the agreement signed by the state government and company, the government would not charge Reliance Communications anything for laying optical fibre cables across the state. "And in return, the company was supposed to provide free bandwidth to the government departments for successfully implementing SWAN network," he informed. But despite reminding several times, the company could not fulfill its commitment, forcing the government to take tough stand in this regard, he said. -

No Liability On Reliance Due To Supreme Court Order On Limited Mobility: Rcom
@ksh@T posted a topic in Reliance Communications
NEW DELHI: Faced with a liability to pay about Rs 400 crore levy to BSNL, Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications on Wednesday said it will not put any additional burden on the company as it has been taken care of in the previous years. "The case pertains to the period 2002-03, prior to the Corporate reorganisation of Reliance Communications and has been fully provided for in the previous fiscals. There is no additional liability on the company following the judgement", a RCOM Spokesperson said here. The Supreme Court today held Tata Teleservices 'Walky' and Reliance Communication's (formerly Infocom) 'Unlimited Cordless' as limited mobile phones, hence they are liable to pay Access Deficit Charge (ADC) to BSNL for interconnection. A bench, while dismissing their petitions, has upheld telecom tribunal TDSAT's order of September 2005 that held these services are not fixed lines telephones, but limited mobile. The apex court had also earlier reserved both the companies plea challenging the TDSAT order which held that its fixed wireless telephone was equivalent to mobile service and thus Reliance was liable to pay ADC of over Rs 400 crore. Thus, Tata would have to pay about Rs 300 crore as levy to BSNL on account of ADC. -
