Govt Allots Spectrum To Mtnl, Airtel, Hutch Along With Bsnl For Testing 3g
@ksh@T replied to sanket55555's topic in The Lounge
DoT gives spectrum to BSNL for 3G T Surendar | TNN Mumbai: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has quietly allocated scarce spectrum to state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Nigam (BSNL) to conduct experiments in 3G, an advanced telecom standard for carrying data and visuals at a high speed. The out-of-turn allocation could give BSNL an unfair advantage over private telecom players, which want to launch similar services. The allocation of spectrum was mentioned in a ministry of communications & IT paper and notice that called for a meeting to discuss various spectrum related issues. The note names only BSNL as the receipient of 5 + 5 MHz spectrum in the 2 GHz band for carrying out experiments in Pune, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Coimbatore. Experiments will be conducted by 3G equipment vendor Nokia for BSNL. Spectrum is variuos frequency bands in which telecom companies operate. Spectrum bands required for wireless telephony are scare in India as most of it is occupied by defence and other government agencies. Telecom companies want additional spectrum to improve the quality of services and also to launch 3G services, which will bring high-end video and data services on the mobile phone. Most telecom companies had, over the last six months, made applications for allocation of spectrum for 3G experiments along with equipment vendors like Ericsson and Lucent. The applicants included companies that use two dominant mobile technologies — GSM and CDMA. However, the allocation of 3G spectrum to BSNL is expected to favour the GSM players. Industry sources say that BSNL is expected to conduct its experiments with Nokia equiment. The experiments will involve testing transmission and other equipment in Indian conditions and standardising components. In this case, Nokia will plug in its equipment into BSNL’s network and run demo services with limited users to iron out glitches before large scale deployment. The process could take between 6-8 months. As the DoT will allocate 3G spectrum simulteaneously to various telecom companies, BSNL could have a lead in launching its services. Since Nokia is also an equipment supplier to nearly all GSMbased mobile operators, companies like Airtel and Orange will also gain indirectly due to DoT largesse to BSNL. Reliance could also benefit if it manages to get spectrum for its proposed GSM services. Says a telecom expert, ‘‘Government’s move is tilted in favour of the GSM players. It is an unfair move which will kill competitive technologies.’’ Biggest losers will be Reliance and Tata, two large CDMA service providers. Though there are competing 3G technologies in CDMA and GSM, the ones offered by the CDMA have been found to be much more superior. -
Mobile revenue falling, 6 circles buck the trend Sanjay Anand | TNN New Delhi: It’s cell users in the richest and the poorest telecom circles who rang in some good news for mobile operators. With falling tariffs, the average revenue per user (Arpu) showed some rise in Mumbai, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, along with UP (East) and Bihar. Add Himachal Pradesh to the list, which registered the steppest 15% rise in Apru. But in the rest of the country, Arpus dipped. Delhi and Mumbai continued to register highest Arpus. Delhi had highest Arpu of Rs 465.51, followed by Mumbai at Rs 430.97 during April-June 2006-07. While Delhi’s Arpu fell about 5%, Mumbai’s grew by as much, according to data compiled COAI. Industry revenue of the seven private GSM operators for Q1 have grown however by about 14% to Rs 5,620.59 crore. Revenues of individual companies were: Airtel (Rs 2,310.59 crore), Hutch (Rs 1,841.77 crore), Idea (Rs 750.53 crore), Aircel (Rs 252.35 crore), Reliance GSM (Rs 206.03 crore), Spice (Rs 145.29 crore) and BPL Mobile (Rs 114.03 crore). In India, Arpus of cellular companies have shown steady declines, with a few exceptions here and there, largely on account of steep declines in tariffs because of intense competition. In fact, all India Arpu in Q1 has dipped further by about 3% to Rs 346.59. Industry officials maintain that the trend will continue for some more time before Arpus stabilise and begin an upturn. ‘‘I believe that industry Arpu could go down to Rs 300-320,’’ said COAI DG TV Ramachandran. He said the upturn would come on account of increase in value-added services (VAS) like SMS and download of ringtones, music and wallpapers. ‘‘VAS revenues are growing at 30-40%, although they account for an average of about 15-17%,’’ said Ramachandran. He cited the example of the Philippines, saying that cellular Arpus fell there but with a sharp rise in SMS and other services, it began an upward trend.

Big 92.7 Fm From Adlabs (reliance) To Roll Out First Phase In Six Metros
@ksh@T replied to abhay's topic in Reliance Communications
Adlabs’ Big FM set to hit the waves from Delhi ASHISH SINHA NEW DELHI, Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s Adlabs Radio will kick off its 44-city FM network from Delhi later this month. The group has decided to brand its network ‘Big FM 92.7’. Big FM will also be the first radio network in the country to rope in stars like Amitabh Bachchan to host programmes on the network as full-time presenters. Adlabs is India’s biggest FM radio licence holder along with Sun TV network owned by South Asia FM, which also has licences for 44 cities. Adlabs paid Rs 110 crore in fee for licences in 44 cities. The company is also in talks with radio companies in the US and Europe to divest 20% equity for foreign direct investment (FDI). “We will start with Delhi this month and by March next year, will launch all our stations. We will offer a nationwide footprint for advertisers with a unique programming mix,” Tarun Katial, CEO, Adlabs Radio, told FE. For advertisers, Big FM would price its effective 10-second advertising spots at Rs 3,000-3,500 —at par with market leaders like Radio Mirchi and Radio City, sources said. Currently, India’s 25 FM stations generate Rs 350 crore in advertising revenue with nearly 14 crore listeners. “When all the 300 stations are launched, the number of listeners will be over 30 crore and FM radio will generate advertising worth over Rs 1,500 crore,” Rajiv Mishra, president of Association of Radio Operators in India, said. Currently, Radio Mirchi leads with 5 crore listeners, while Radio City is second with 4.5 crore. Adlabs aims to reach out to 7 crore listeners -
New Delhi: The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group owned Adlabs Films has made its entry into the Rs 15,000-crore Indian television business. In a notice issued to BSE, the company said on Thursday that Synergy is a producer of quiz shows and programmes like the popular Kaun Banega Crorepati that had a format similar to the international classic Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? Adlabs chief financial officer V Devarajan said the acquisition of Synergy, run by well-known quiz master Siddharth Basu, would be completed in two months. "We are ramping up the numbers in the content space. TV is a significant revenue generator in the content space," he said. In the past, Synergy has produced shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati and Mastermind India for broadcasters like Star and BBC. Currently, it’s making a reality show titled Jhalak Dikhla Ja -for Sony. We hear that this big budget adaptation of the ABC show Dancing with the Stars may have prompted Synergy to look for buyers before the show launches on Thursday. The new move may mark Adlabs' first direct investment in the TV production business. On Tuesday, the Adlabs stock hit a 3-month high, up about 8.5 per cent at Rs 331.
