  1. Videocon Dth Service

Videocon Industries, a renowned electronic manufacturer in India, is all set to launch its own Direct-to-Home service in India. The service was to be launched in September, but last minute issues led this to be postponed till November. Videocon, probably the largest moving television manufacturer in India, till the Korean giants came here, has still about 20-30% share in the TV market. The company is investing a whopping Rs. 1000 Cr. into this in colaboration with BBCL, Bharat Business Channel Ltd. The brand name has been given. The service will be known as D2H and the test signals are already underway. The major players in the DTH service providers would be in for a tough time, because, Videocon is planning to sell the STB's at less that Rs 1000/- thus making this the cheapest available brand. Also, Videocon will be competing with DishTV, Tata sky, Sun Direct, DD Direct, BigTV Airtel Digital TV. VIDEOCON's set-top box is a MPEG-4 digital satellite receiver with built-in IRDETO CAS system and Idway-J middleware. ARION Technology a Korean world-leading digital set-top box manufacturer, has participated in this project as one of the consortium members and provided their experienced HW and SW solutions to VIDEOCON. ARION's sales director said ARION will be able to secure stable incomes from royalty on VIDEOCON's set-top box sales in India market. The number of Channels that is to be made available is believed to be around 240+ including radio channels. Also, unconfirmed reports are there that Internet would also be available for the subscribers, even though 2 way communication through LNB is not even heard off. There would be seven packages in addition to regional packages. This would really increase the competition as mostly the consumers are more interested in getting channels of their choice. The DTH would be made available through an Israeli Satellite that would ensure that the middle-east customers are also romped in.

  5. Samsung was the first manufacturer to release an 8MP camera phone (the Innov8, outed one month before Sony Ericsson’s C905), and it looks like it will also be the first to announce and launch a 12MP handset. Telecoms Korea says that, according to another Korean publication, the world’s first 12 Megapixel camera phone will be unveiled by Samsung at MWC 2009, thus in about two weeks from now. Details about the phone are basically inexistent, but it’s said that Samsung plans to begin mass production before the end of February, with the intention of releasing it in Europe first. It will be interesting to see if the handset has a touchscreen or a regular display, as well as if it’s a smartphone or just a “dumb phone”. Previous reports said that Samsung also wants to produce an 8MP phone with 3x optical zoom. So we might see that at MWC 2009 too, alongside the 12MP handset. [vIa:unwiredview]

  7. Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today's hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available. Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which continues the legacy of one of the company's most successful products, the Nokia 6300. "The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen. The Nokia 6700 combines smooth surfaces, rich materials and precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat which completes the premium finish. Improving on all areas of its forerunner, the Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access meaning sharing images or video is faster and easier than ever. At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carry thousands of their favorite tracks. Rounding off the new arrivals is the Nokia 2700 classic which, at and estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of Nokia's most affordable, full featured handsets. Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. "These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia's online service, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites. The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner's first Internet experience," concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009. [vIa:Nokia]

  11. Htc Iolite

HTC Iolite Pops Up Again, Is It a Cruise Replacement? We've already seen the Iolite in low-res and again saw it confirmed in even lower-res in that gargantuan HTC devices leak. Looks to us as though of all the devices in that massive cache, the first to arrive just might be the Iolite. Why's that? Well another image has popped up (via coolsmartphone) that confirms we're looking at a Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro with TouchFlo 3D. We're seeing some clearer specs as well: Qualcomm MSM7225, 528MHz 512MB ROM, 288 RAM 2.8 Inch, 240x320 screen (really?) 3.2mp camera MicroSD Quad-band EDGE, 3G Bluetooth, Wifi 1100 mAh battery good for 400 minutes of talktime 102mmx53.5mmx14.5mm 103 grams We're not sure, but the above specs seem like a pretty clear indication that we're looking at a Euro-only replacement for the HTC Cruise. We're seeing a similar scrollwheel/d-pad and also a new button -- the "HTC Footprints button," which smells like a dedicated GPS button to us. The Cruise, you may recall, was marketed primarily as a GPS Device. With a dedicated GPS-esque button on the Iolite and the similar form factor, we're guessing that the Iolite is aiming at the same niche. [vIa:wmexperts]
  12. 'Lifetime Validity' offers: How long is Life Time? Reliance asserts its superiority due to longer remaining license Period. Existing Life Time Incoming Product of Reliance offers longer validity of 15 years at the same price. Launches New 10 Year Incoming Product for wider Choice. DAKC (Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City), Navi Mumbai, April 02, 2006 Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently issued a clarification that 'Lifetime Validity' product should be valid till the license period of the mobile operator. Reliance's Life Time Product offers its customers a superior value of up to 15 years of free incoming period as it has longer remaining period of License than other leading mobile operators. To further supplement its already superior offerings, Reliance is launching a new 10 year incoming product to offer customers more choice. The new 10-year validity product from Reliance is comparable to the 'Lifetime Validity' product offered by most other mobile operators. The 'Lifetime Validity' products offered by mobile operators who had received their license in 1994 are valid only till 2014, which is less than 10 years from now. In contrast, the 'Lifetime Validity' product of Reliance Communications, is valid till 2021 which is almost 15 years from now. Announcing the initiative, S P Shukla, President - Wireless, Reliance Communications said: "This new product at Rs 795 offers a 10 year incoming calling facility. This is almost as much as the Lifetime validity product of most operators. And in conjunction with the flexibility to choose any tariff rather than being tied down to any high tariffs, this product offers superior value to our subscribers." This Recharge option of Rs 795- currently available with E-recharge - comes with Rs 25 talk time pre-loaded. Customers needing to make outgoing calls occasionally can recharge with top-up micro-recharges starting from Rs 10 and make outgoing calls at the calling rates of Rs 1.99 for a local call and Rs 2.99 for all other calls in India. And just as in the Lifetime validity option of Rs 995, a subscriber loading with Rs 795 recharge option will not be bound by any particular tariff plan for a lifetime. With Reliance India Mobile, he will have the option to choose from the company's wide range of prepaid vouchers and tariff plans as per his requirement. The subscriber also has the option of loading the Lifetime Validity Recharge option at Rs 995 and get incoming call facility up to 15 years.
  13. Yesterday Sony Ericsson announced two new devices for the North American market - the C510a Cyber-shot handset and the W508a Walkman phone. Both feature quad-band EDGE and tri-band 3G in addition to video calling. Apart from their obvious differences in terms of music phone versus camera phone, both phones are easily distinguished by their form factor. The C510a went the candy bar route while the W508a is a clamshell. By no means smartphones, these two devices are able to compensate for their lack of jaw-dropping features through the very polished OS. Carriers have yet to be announced, but a phone like the W508a seems very much like the type of device that Rogers and Fido love to offer and lack of 1700MHz doesn’t bode well for T-Mobile. Both are slated for release in H1 of this year. Specs after the jump. Sony Ericsson today announces its first mobile phone with Smile Shutter™ technology, wrapped up in its most affordable Cyber-shot™ phone to date; the C510 Cyber-shot™. 23. Google optimizes search results pages for iPhone and Android For all of those who Google a lot from their iPhone or Android phone (i.e. the T-Mobile G1), the big G has announced that its search results pages are now optimized for said devices. Google mentions that all the search options for iPhone and Android are formatted to fit the handsets’ screens perfectly. Also, the results load faster and there are “touchscreen-friendly buttons and expandable maps for local business results.” For the moment, the optimized search result pages are only in US English. And, in case you have an iPhone or an iPod touch, its firmware must be 2.x in order to benefit from the improvements. [vIa: GoogleMobile]
  24. Australian telecommunications companies would be able to start selling Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies' Android-based phones by the third quarter of 2009 if they wanted to, the company said this week. Huawei entered the Android open handset alliance earlier this week, announcing plans to launch smartphones running Google's new mobile operating system next year. There would be no launch apartheid where some nations were excluded from the first round of access to the phone, according to a spokesperson, who told ZDNet.com.au that if Australia got the phone later it would be the choice of the telcos and not Huawei. "Huawei can confirm that their first Android smartphone is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2009. Huawei's smartphones can be ordered and developed for Australian operators based on any such requests," the spokesperson said. Last week, Huawei formally joined Google's Open Handset Alliance, along with 13 other companies including Garmin International and Vodafone. Other Android phones include HTC's Dream and Kogan Technologies' Agora, which will hit Australia on January 29. [vIa: CNET]
  25. TOSHIBA LAUNCHES INDUSTRY’S FIRST 512GB SOLID STATE DRIVE and NEXT- GENERATION SSD FAMILY USING 43nm MLC NAND New SSD Family Achieves High Levels of Performance, Endurance, Capacity and Reliability to Meet Market Requirements for Notebook Computers, Gaming and Home Entertainment Systems IRVINE, Calif., and TOKYO December 18, 2008 — Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba) and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, its subsidiary in the Americas, today announced the expansion of their line up of NAND-flash-based solid state drives (SSD) with the industry's first 2.5-inch 512-gigabyte (GB)1 SSD and a broad family of fast read/write SSDs based on 43 nanometer (nm) Multi-Level Cell NAND. The new drives provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems, and will be showcased at International CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 – 11, 2009. In addition to the 2.5-inch, 512GB drive, the 43nm NAND SSD family also includes capacities of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, offered in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures or as SSD Flash Modules. Samples of the new drives will be available in the first quarter (January to March) of 2009, with mass production in the second (April to June) quarter. Toshiba's second-generation SSDs bring increased capacity and performance for notebook computers. They utilize an advanced MLC controller, which is also compatible with further advanced processes, that achieves higher read/write speeds, parallel data transfers and wear leveling to optimize performance, reliability and endurance. The drives enable improved system responsiveness with a maximum sequential read speed of 240MB per second (MBps)2 and maximum sequential write speed of 200MBps enabling an improvement in overall computing experience, and faster boot and application loading times. The drives also offer AES data encryption to prevent unauthorized data access. "The solid state drive market is evolving rapidly, with higher performance drives to meet market requirements, and differentiated product families targeted for appropriate applications," said Mr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Vice President of Toshiba Corporation's Semiconductor Company. "This new 43nm SSD family balances value/performance characteristics for its targeted consumer applications, through use of MLC NAND and an advanced controller architecture." Toshiba and many market analysts expect SSDs to begin to gain significant traction in the market in 2009, growing to approximately 10% of the notebook market by 2010, and 25% of the notebook market by 2012. Toshiba expects the value/performance of its MLC NAND-based SSD line-up to help speed the acceptance of solid state storage. Toshiba will continue to promote innovations that widen the horizons of the NAND Flash market and support its continued leadership in that market. The company will spur demand for SSDs in notebook PCs, netbooks, laptops and digital consumer products by enhancing its lineup, offering products with different densities and interfaces in a range of packages, while advancing device performance.
