The infrastructure is "really" used when someone calls. Whenever a person is talking over cellphone, a part of the spectrum is used by him/her (under one of the schemes of spectrum sharing -- technically speaking, multiplexing). If you are not talking, (even if the cellphone is switched ON), there is NO load on the infrastucture. By simple economics, we should PAY for what we USE. And someone USING IT MORE, must PAY MORE. Consider the case, that I use Reliance's 149 voucher ... do not call AT ALL, and it so happens, I do not receive any call AT ALL. So, I am NOT using the Infrastructure AT ALL, but still paying 149. Offcourse, pricing is determined by market dynamics (not by ECONOMIC USAGE OF AN ASSET, alone). I agree, I DERIVE value by having the ABILITY to receive calls .... for which I am ok to pay. But now (.... or soon enough, in the coming months), market dyanmics seems to be getting more in line with the Economic Usage - based pricing. So, just for receiving calls, I just need to invest in the Handset (which is offcourse a cost to me). But beyond that, CPP (i.e. CALLING PARTY PAYS) applies. If someone calls me, he also pays for the cost of infrastructure "used" in completing the call at my end. (.... it's actually happening already. If someone from BSNL calls me, BSNL pays Reliance 30 paise ... and collects it from it's own subscriber). Off course, whenever I CALL somebody, I will need to pay for not only the infrastrucutre being used to connect my own phone, but also the infra being used to connect the phone of the person, I called. Market Dynamics is fast falling in line with allocating the costs, as per Economic Usage. Calling Party Pays rules ..... (in full sense).

As I said before .... Airtel is fast becoming like Hutch (..... Hidden Charges, arbitrary fees, unreasonable conditions etc.) I think anyone picking up this plan is just wasting Rs. 999/- + plus all / any advantages they had under "previous SCHEMES !!!". Personally, I didn't even take Rs. 995 1 yr free with Rs. 300 talktime from Reliance ... because I believe in less than 3-4 months, incoming rental will go away for everybody. We'll only be paying for talktime .... (like TATA is already doing). So, it's a waste of big money to "buy" free incoming "rentals" ... even if you don't buy this .... you'll get it, in 3-4 months.

I think jigshot1's head has got used to getting high radiations, while speaking on a mobile. It makes perfect sense (scientifically) that when a head so much exposed to high radiations for 6 years ... and all of a sudden you get a 10 times lower radiation .... the head will detect the abnormality. ... Something like ... a "real" chain smoker does not like caffeine free cigrarettes ..... however well, somebody tries to replicate the effect (... it's the caffeine that matters !)

Well .. it sounds fair and fine to me. Mukesh won't want to have his calls tapped by Anil Ambani ... arguably Anil would have interst in listening to Mukesh's calls. I'd be surprised if Mukesh isn't already using a Dolphin mobile connection, rather than a RIM, for is important and confidential communications.

I don't think camera phones should be banned per-se. But Dayanidhi Maran / TRAI should levy a charge of 30 paise ADC per photograph clicked. That will ensure that lots of photos are not clicked (usually the indecent photographers are cheap and poor leechers) .... they won't like to pay up. Hence, Govt. should take financial means to attack the problem of indecent photography. HOOOO: I just fancy if someone is yet take my indecent pics .... I hope I was considered "photgenic" enough :-)

Of course, it transmits microwaves while on standby mode, like other technologies do. However, CDMA technology checks 800 times per second its transmission level. Therefore, radiation level is 10 times less than GSM. Another important thing to point out is that CDMA system transmits signals only when the user starts conversation. Simply saying, when you're listening the other ends conversation, you are not affected by microwave as the speaking person does.

I thought "deeply" on this question ... since the correct answer to this question is *vital* to our personal comfort. I hope you all realize that that underwear plays a MORE important part in our life than a MOBILE PHONE. (or even an unrelated expensive software). Moot questions for discussion: 1. What are the parameters on which we could evaluate the *goodness* of an underwear? 2. What is the highest level achieved by any actually available underwear (on each of the parameters identified in 1)? 3. How could we define a composite metric (incorporating all the data on parameters identified, appropriately weighted), to arrive at the *BEST* underwear?

This is incorrect .... spectrum is not given in proportion to what one pays. TATA can bid for and buy only 1 operator's share of the spectrum (i.e. 1/6th). Also FREE does not mean you can have 100 3G operators .... becoz spectum is a scarce resource. Only a limited few (say SIX) parts of it can be divided and sold in pieces to six operators. (Also 3G is available only on CDMA at the core (1) WCDMA is the upgrade for GSM, (2) EVDO is the upgrade for 2.5G CDMA) This is a valid argument ... and indeed Finance Ministry is considering this option. I find it ok .... but still the problem .... WHO will be allowed to participate in revenue sharing. Those same SIX current monsters .... or new one possible. How else are 3G operators going to be selected in a market - optimized fashion. I personally don't support the idea, of all current 2G players be automatically be allotted the 3G spectrum .... with no regard to their past record, efficiency of operations (compared to WORLD standards) etc. There MUST be mechanism for new (and more efficient) players to take the place of current 2G operators, for 3G

There is no entry fee .. HEAVY OR LOW. Fee has to be FAIR. Market determines what's fair. If the highest six bids received are Rs. 1 crore each .... that is fair. If highest six bids received are Rs. 1500 crore each .... that is fair. It's for the bidders to decide, what is fair. It's perfectly possible Tata bids Rs. 1500 crores and gets 1/6th share of the spectrum. Other 5 bids are all Rs. 1 crore ... and each of those 5, still get 1/6th spectrum. I see no reason why we should not take 1500 crores from TATA .. it's damn good money. But if someone is willing to pay even more than TATA ... then TATA is out. What counts is money. Yes, more money for infrastructure can be and should be generated by selling spectrum.You are a part of the corrupt country called India. Read above. There is no hefty fee. Market pays only the fair price. The highest six bids win. Rest go to the dustbin. Fair and Square ... no leniency for anyone, especially the current monsters who want FREE spectrum. FREE means only the current SIX monsters are given the spectrum free. Anyone outside the current Six, is automatically disqualified to be considered (even if more efficient and capable in providing quality services). FREE means TATA, Reliance, BSNL each get 1/6th of the spectrum FOR SURE. So, do Airtel, Hutch and Idea. OPEN COMPETITION means BSNL could lose the bidding and be out of 3G domain, being replaced by a private service provider. Same holds for TATA, Reliance, Airtel and Hutch. OPEN COMPETITION means DoCoMo (Japan) could be providing the 3G services in India, similar to what it's doing in Japan. Or Korea Telecom could bring highest standard CDMA 3G services to India.

No. Under "free spectrum" the current 6 operators get the spectrum free. Under market determined auction ... still SIX OPERATORS get the spectrum. The only difference is the current "monsters" like TATA, Reliance and Airtel will not necessarily be the 3G operators. If Vijay Mallya wants to operate 3G services and pay the market rates .... I have no extra love for Sunil Mittal over Vijay Mallya. If Cingular (USA) or Deutsche Telekom wants to operate 3G services and pay market rate .... I have no extra love for the Chinese Hutchinson Whampoa. That is exactly what I DON'T want. If these monsters want a FREE LUNCH at MY EXPENSE. F*KK OFF.These monsters must pay the market price .... or else GET OUT. Yes. Reasonable is the market determined rate. If the open auction proves that the market value of 3G services in India is worth less than $ 2 Billion, sure. But we should sell it even for $ 200 million. I want my every cent ... that is due to me. 1 cent or 2 dollars. But I want the fair market price. This is interesting. I would like all the money from the sale of spectrum be dedicated for use of extending Delhi Metro. (Delhi Metro cost $ 1.2 Billion, mostly from an outstanding loan from Japan). We could retire the entire debt. Or the same $ 2 Billion could be dedicated for building a similar Mumbai Metro .... or a Bangalore Metro. No need to us to take loans from Japan. F*kk the politicians (if they are indeed that horrendous as you claim). Stiff competition doesn't come from offering FREE spectrum to current monsters like TATA, Reliance, Airtel and Hutch. Free competition comes from: LET THE MARKET DECIDE. No subsidies to current monsters.

Who "owns" the spectrum, if INDIANS don't own it ?? Chinese? Americans? or Europeans ? The damn thing is worth atleast $ 2 Billion ... I want my 2 dollars. Damn it. I have NIL interest in making SUNIL MITTAL, ANIL AMBANI, OR HUTCHINSON WHAMPOA richer at my expense ... They are sufficiently rich, already. At best, I am willing to contribute my Rs. 90/- (if all other indians also contribute) .... to build a super expressway between Delhi and Mumbai ... and If it could be used to build a new power plant, outside Delhi. In the worst case, I'll also consider, $ 2 Billion worth of Petrol to be imported .... and I get a FREE refill for a day .... at say Indian Oil's petrol pump. You speak for yourself .... NOT FOR ME.

Even if the govt doesn't charge anything, the greedy operators will still overcharge us. I want my Rs. 90/- for selling my fair share of the spectrum owned by 1 billion Indians. Rest of you can give it away for free, you're welcome.

I'm disgusted by the discussion going on here ..... to even feel like commenting on it ! Give 3G spectrum for free ... Hell ! You want to gift your share, you are welcome ... but I want my 1/1billionth share of the spectrum price. If it is conservatively priced at 2 Billion Dollars (USD) .... I Do NOT wish to give up my 2 dollars ( Rs. 90/-). Good stuff. What I have I done to lose my 90 rupees ? And if you count in my family it's 360 rupees ... I'd like to have a small eat-out.

The most secure way it to ... NOT let internet sh*t enter your system. Just don't connect to the internet ... and you don't need to write your own firewalls or anything. As for P*RN one can always fantasise in head ... rather than depend on the virus prone internet.

Aditi Varma Ahmedabad, December 9: NOW, cellphone users can talk to their heart’s content without causing themselves heartburn, what with CDMA service providers turning the heat on each other by launching fantastic offers. Some of these schemes have been launched exclusively for Gujarat. ‘‘The market in Gujarat offers a lot of potential. Gujaratis have a lot of buying power and business is good here. It is a great market to test a new product or offer,’’ says a senior Reliance Infocomm official. Tata began the war by introducing a scheme offering non-stop incoming calls for two years. To counter this, Reliance came up with a similar three-year plan. For Rs 2,999, Reliance offers LG CDMA RD 2530 cellphone under this scheme. Tata offers six handsets, including three with single-colour screens, for charges ranging from Rs 2,499 to Rs 4,699. Businessman Bhavik Patel says, ‘‘I opted for Reliance because I receive a lot of calls. The three-year plan sounds like a good deal.’’ Tata subscriber Ashok Varma says, ‘‘I opted for Tata because I feel that it’s a reputed company and will not cheat its customers. Moreover, the new scheme means that I will not have to recharge for the next two years.’’ With its ‘Non Stop Mobile’ scheme, Tata has roped around 50,000 subscribers in Gujarat. ‘‘Of this, Ahmedabad accounts for nearly 20 per cent,’’ say officials. A Reliance Infocomm spokesperson says, ‘‘Around 1,500-2,000 Amdavadis are opting for the three-year scheme every day. In fact, we have run out of stock, so people have opted for advance booking.’’ Yet, Reliance has upped the ante with a new prepaid scheme of Rs 1,949 which offers free talktime of Rs 1,000 along with LG handset 2430. The cellphone is worth Rs 2,799. This scheme has been launched exclusively for Gujarat, said an official. Tata Indicom is expected to announce a counter scheme soon. Reliance has also launched another offer wherein the subscriber will get an LG 2340 worth Rs 2,500 along with free talktime worth Rs 2,500 for only Rs 2,500. Validity period is three months, said another official. To attract more customers, Tata has already launched two schemes: per second billing and its 0-1-2-3 plan. Under the 0-1-2-3 plan, Tata charges nothing for local calls to Tata cellphones; Re 1 per minute to Tata fixed phones and other local cellphone numbers; Rs 2 per minute to other fixed phones and Rs 3 per minute for outgoing STD calls. That's precisely the reason I hate all those cr*p safety softwares. Norton Anti virus is good .. but look at what that process rtvscan.exe does to the speed of the comp. Black-ice also reduces speed. (Off course these are paid , corporate softwares ... but even free ones are bad or maybe worse)

Thursday, December 08, 2005: Registering a major achievement, Tata Indicom has become ‘November ka sikandar’, as it has attained market leadership position by adding over 1 million gross subscribers across 20 circles. Tata Indicom has shown aggressive growth since the launch of ‘Non-stop mobile’ service, which was recently launched and is immensely popular among masses. The two year free incoming service has brought a significant contribution to the booming Indian telecom industry. The company has now set an ambitious target of reaching the mark of nine million mobile subscribers by the end of 2005 from the current level of over 7.1 million. When asked about providing free incoming for two years, Tata Teleservices chief executive officer, Darryl Green said, "The company has not lost any revenue in offering free incoming for two years. My board is delighted with the financial performance of Tata Indicom." Terming the success of the plan as a breakthrough in pre-paid market, Green said that they are looking for the same breakthrough in the post-paid market as well. The company is also planning to apply for national long distance (NLD) licence in January when the recently announced new licence fee of Rs 2.5 crore takes effect. COAI demands DoT action against Tata Tele's 'non-stop mobile' plan New Delhi: GSM industry body COAI has approached the Government against Tata Teleservices' pre-paid tariff plan that allows users to receive incoming calls for two years even after exhausting the talktime, saying it will lead to inflated subscriber figures being reported by the CDMA operator. In an October 18 letter to Department of Telecom (DoT) Secretary J S Sarma, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Director General T V Ramachandran said Tata Teleservices' ''non-stop mobile'' plan allows non-revenue generating users to be included in subscriber base reported by the company. As per the scheme, although the subscriber will not be able to make outgoing calls after exhausting talktime, he will be able to receive incoming calls for two years. Urging intervention in the matter, Mr Ramachandran said this new scheme offered by TTSL will result in a gross inflation of the subscriber base and violate the DoT guidelines for calculation of subscriber figures vide its letter dated August 29, 2005 and September 7, 2005. Further, he said spectrum is allocated on the basis of subscriber figures. ''Reporting of incorrect and inflated subscriber figures will result in serious problems in the critical area of monitoring of efficient spectrum utilisation,'' he added. Moreover, even if the government is able to allot more spectrum for such ''theoretical subscribers'', it would not get any additional spectrum usage charge for this since these ''subscribers'' would be generating zero revenue, he said.

So, does that mean that LINUX is more or less completely immune to all viruses on the net ?? If so, sounds a very reasonable (and cheap) alternative to do porn-browsing fearlessly !

Oh my God ! So, what should I do? Just don't tell me to buy, 3 different PCs !!!! - One for genuine work, one for porn and one for serious web browsing What's better than this? EDIT: Just got a thought I could buy 3 different hard disks and keep putting them into the slots, one at a time (with each of the 3 hard-disks having their own operating and even their own boot sector). Gosh ! I don't know if frequent inserting / removing the hard disks will damage them .... or if their is any other problem in this scheme. (But I don't think virus from one session using hard disk 2, can be transferred to hard disk 3 this way. Right? After all viruses can get saved only on the hard disk, not in RAM or whatever other memory is available with the computer. No?)

I really very very wary about security .... viruses and all the cr*p. I am planning to buy a desktop PC, with a large hard disk. This is what I plan to do .... EXPERTS, PLEASE COMMENT / ADVISE ME on this strategy: I'll buy a 40 GB hard disk ... and partition it 3 ways 20GB, 10GB and 10GB .... load operating system (all windows) on each. 1. My first 20 GB will be the sacred - damn important drive, where I could do my serious work. Studies, Projects etc. WON'T CONNECT TO INTERNET EVER ... from this operating system / hard drive. 2. Second 10 GB ... to do porno-stuff .... will download and save only there. Naturally lots of ****ty sites, full of viruses and all crap. I'll put whatever reasonable firewall etc. .... but you know nothing really works. And with the kind of stuff I'll visit.... I'm likely to get spyware, viruses .. all crap. Will probably format this partition, when I get fedup with the irritation of viruses, spyware here ... reload the operating system. 3. The remaining 10 GB .... for accessing safe websites eg. microsoft, or .edu sites etc. Now my questions: 1. Is my First 20GB portion perfectly safe from viruses, spyware. I'll never connect to the internet using it. ?? Do I need to install firewall, anti-virus on this .... u know these things slow up the system? 2. When I access the web for porno-sites using my second partition of 10 GB ... can virus move from my this partition to the other partitions (Please note: I will never transfer a file or anything from this partition to the other partitions). ?? 3. The last 10GB partition for internet access to "safe" sites: I would like to copy-paste only .pdf or .txt or secure software downloads (eg. zipped softwares) ... from this safe partion to my first partition of 20 GB. How to do this? ----------------------------- In general, is my first 20GB with very very important data .... completely secure in these circumstances .... from viruses as well as anyone (like cracker ) poking their unwanted noses in?
