I know in Pune, some localities have been connected by Reliance by OFC ... and on a test basis they are getting IPTV .... tonnes of video content (and entirely free for now, because it's under test). Still I think 3-4 years is a more decent time line for bulk of the households in Delhi / Mumbai type cities to get OFC to their homes. And Kanpur, Jaipur types, probably 5 years. If reliance launches Netway by March 2006 .... it really means commercial properties, will be getting OFC access (eg. Buildings in the Connaught Place, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Barakhamba road , Nehru Place, Karol Bagh etc. ... I mean those in Delhi). Common-man's households (even in Delhi / Mumbai) will still take 3-4 years. But you're quite ambitious (by WORLD STANDARDS), if you want OFC to your home rightaway .... that kind of thing exists only in 2 countries in the world today: South Korea and Japan. Neither European homes nor US homes have that privelege at large. (remember USA is not just New York or San Jose) .... bulk of USA is still not on OFC. (and even they will take atleast 1-3 years). Sirs, but first you should worry about "common households" in India, to be able to BUY A PC .. and then worry about broadband. It's the PC which has be more ubiquitous (atleast like a mobile phone) .... before it becomes worthwhile to get broadband there. A huge value-add from the net is easily accessible via dial-up or Wireless based Internet. You guys are clearly quite away from "common households" if all you are interested in is heavy downloads or videos over the net. "common households" in India don't have simple email access right now. Quite foolish to talk about "getting access rights to lay OFC to such households".

Webworld To Host Videoconfrencing Competetion

Nothing strange ... I long ago developed the bad habit of telling stories and damn lies ... unfortunately, now people are catching them more often, that I'd like them to Anyway, I don't see a great future of WiMax or WiFi in India. -

WIMAX has a very small range. (good only for a few "hotspots"). EVDO spreads across ... giving high speed over the entire coverage area. Second, WIMAX will be affordable, only where high usage is guaranteed (eg. airport lounges, Corporate complexes). Using Wimax to provide broadband to residential customers has not been thought of even in the western countries. Fiber-to-the-building is rolling out at a massive pace in Korea, Japan. It's also the Broadband access technology of choice in USA and Europe. (Though, due to large distances in USA, and legacy copper network, DSL continues to be popular for broadband). But, Korea, Japan are way too ahead of rest of the world in Broadband access. Both use extensively Fiber-to-the building. WIRELESS has not been used anywhere, on a large scale, for the sole purpose of providing residential broadband. (Wimax is exception, but used only for "hotspots"). Technologies like EVDO are basically meant for MOBILE BROADBAND. In the long run, even India, USA ... .everybody, has to move to Fiber-to-the-Building access medium for Broadband access. Reliance has already moved forward, being in the process of connnecting 1 million buildings over 20 cities with Fiber-to-the-building. Mostly corporate but some residential high-rise buildings too. For the rest, I believe, we'll have to rely on "hotspots"-type usage ... at Reliance webworlds for REAL BROADBAND. Wimax is also a viable technology .. but I think, it will also be restricted to "hotspots" like being in the west. The technology having large scale implementation will be EVDO .. it's far cheaper to have EVDO per sq. area covered, as compared to have Wimax. -
Indian Airlines, Reliance Info Tie Up For...

As of date, reliance does not have the capability to provide you True Broadband at your home. (one would really need fiber-to-building to have really good broadband). (Some people call DSL - 256kbps broadband ... I don't). True Broadband is available at Reliance webworlds (with video conferencing). .. and also for other apps. I don't think you need Broadband of VoIP ... a normal net connection should be ok. Many people are already using it. -

512K cannot be provided over wireless (as of now). Maybe after EVDO is launched. Video-con is possible from webworlds because they are directly connected via optic fiber to the OFC backbone. (So, you need a wired access, ... and better optic fiber access ... to get 512K bandwidth at home or do video-con from home). -

so, what's your wishlist as a netizen? I am rather satisfied with Reliance's performance, as far as the data services are concerned. -
I think Jatayu browser is only relevant, when someone is using R-surf. (Otherwise R-world is a pure Java interface ... nothing to do with Jatayu). What I feel is that .. theoretically, all Java-based R-world apps should run on *ALL* java-enabled handsets ... BUT the problem is that some handsets don't offer the specific hardware or operating system level support to certain classes of Java. (eg. an LG 5130 java-app, will have options for choosing specific colors, placing photos, switching on the speaker phone etc. If same application is used for LG 2130 .. there could be a problem, because Java will try to look color-enablers in the operating system interface. It'll find none, because it's not a color enabled handset. And an unpredictrable result .. nasty errors could pop-up). therefore, one may need to code-up the same applications separately for LG 5130 and LG 2130. (or atleast put an if.. then into the same application, to behave according to the handset accessing the application.

Ideally, reliance should open up R-world for placing privately developed and sold applications (which could be accessed using something like a URL). Or alternatively, reliance *MUST* allow WAP access widely. (Though, off course, currently, WAP, even in totality has less useful content that the normal R-world applications). -
I don't see the "message express" app in LG 5130 !! what does it do ... and can others with LG 5130, see it?

well ... Google is free, so is gmail or yahoo mail. So, is news, a lot of academic papers, encyclopaedias (WIKIPEDIA ) Your rimweb also happens to be free ! Atleast I am not interested in the paid-stuff on the net. (and I am quite happy with free bollywood - sites for pics etc.)

Actually, this service is almost "free" .... not Rs. 25 as reported in the press. It's under Membership plan .... which is Rs. 25 per month. So, for those already having the Membership plan, it's free. And for those, not under Membership plan, it's just Rs. 3/- for becoming a 24-hour long member of R-world. --> Reliance should make the Railways service also under Membership. It should charge it's fees from the Railways (or the credit card companies), not from subscribers. -
Now this is a way-off question from the topic !! .... but I just want to ask it. Why do they need to test R-world apps for each and every handset. If the handset is Java-enabled, shouldn't Java ensure that R-world will work fine? ... and same argument for BREW-enabled handsets. (ie. if the handset is BREW-enabled ... all BREW R-world apps should run fine). No?
-
I love this fact in R-world ..... I ALWAYS listen to all the ringtones ... and see all the WALLPAPERS (esp. of heroines ) ... and since I don't save any .. it comes entirely free to me ! I wish R-world at some point of time becomes like Internet ... you pay the access charges to the ISP (i.e. Reliance) ... but all sites (i.e. applications) are freely accesible.
-
Has anyone checked out TOP HEROINE videos in the "Movies & Videos" section of R-world today. B*stards are charging Rs. 10/- per video (per heroine). ------------------------- I can see slowly and slowly, Reliance is becoming BESHARAM (for those who don't understand hindi, Besharam is INDECENT). Anyone wants to hazard a GUESS .... How many MONTHS till Reliance launches a separate category called P*RN. Or, under what garb, will it try to pass semi-p*rn. It's already made a ... move (I know, many will argue it has nothing to do with p*rn ... but dirty minds like me, can't help "imagining things" and "imagining the future" ) May be the next thing to launch will be Bollywood Cabaret dances ... No

I didn't find any prob. at Santa Cruz (whenever there, traveling to mumbai). In Delhi, more than 95% of the time I find 5-bars for the network strength. (But Delhi-Cantt is not well covered .... traveling a particular stretch of road .. gives me 0-bars ... so no signal). But GSM is pure cr*p. I can NEVER forget a job-interview which got scr*wed up becoz of I f*kking couldn't understand what the interviewer was saying. ! CAUTION TO EVERY JOB SEEKER: NEVER TAKE A TELEPHONIC JOB INTERVIEW OVER A GSM MOBILE.

Agreed. I was really just joking. Rimweb seems to be going great. Why do you guys want to make so much fuss about it. Use your time discussing RIM, not rimweb !!!

The ISP just has an 100 Mbps LAN speed .... not internet bandwidth. Your 6 KBps (48 Kbps) is the constraint of you telephone line (a dialup telephone line cannot deliver more than 64 kbps, ever). That is irrespective of what capacity your ISP has. If you ISP is a cable operator has is providing you service thru coaxial cable .. and you still get only 48kbps, there is a problem. Cable can support much higher speeds. As for 100 Mbps -- My office has 2 T1 lines (each about 2 Mbps) to US. So, total about 4 Mbps. It supports a large office. It is easy to assume that your ISP does not have 100 Mbps internet bandwidth available. (btw.... what is the access medium used by your ISP ?)
-
You shouldn't have opened this thread, if you so paranoid about reading anything adverse about the specific operators. (and avoid the articles along the same lines, in the general press too). ... Sorry, if this news spoilt your day. But that's hardly a reason, why we shouldn't freely comment, as we feel like. Further, you are arguing against stated facts ... without any verifiable facts and your deluded notions. Want any help?

Yup ... DoT should keep it's hands off.
-
Yup, TRAI has done far better. Actually, DoT itself wasn't bad at all in the days of Arun Shourie .... it's the Daynidhi Maran who is the A$$hole. (egoist b*stard)

I think India will have both types of 3G ... by all existing 2G players. So, GSM will provide WCDMA services and CDMA will provide EVDO. CDMA/EVDO is way too better than the hotch-potch for GSM. (cr*p technology)
-
Also, during Prepaid recharge, I use # at the end of typing the pin-number.
-
Really ... why not?? What sort of multiplexing is used under EVDO .... & how is it different from the usual 1X CDMA technology.
