  1. Dot Seeks Dilution Of Trai's Role

It's time to launch a "Why DoT should be Banned?" thread on rimweb.
  2. 2 Mbps means a T1 line (T1=1.5 Mbps, to be exact) ... usually that kindof speeds are available to corporate (in their premises only). (which is shared by all people in the company's office ... so per head it's lower). Though, on a holiday, if one is alone is office, one could have that speed. Movies from internet can be seen at 1.5 Mbps (eg. songs / vids from www.smashhits.com). I was talking about 786 kbps for a retail customer ... that is surely NOT COMMON in India, yet. (In fact, Reliance webworlds are the most common place for vid conf to retail customers) .... Sify etc. are cr*p. LINUXGUY: Don't tell you got 2Mbps at your home .... because that speed can't be delivered over: 1. Ordinary Telephone Cable (copper) 2. Neither over copper, using ISDN 3. Neither over coaxial cable (thru cable operator) 4. Neither by ANY wireless medium discovered in the world, yet. If you want 2Mbps at your home .... you *MUST* have optic fiber to your premises. --> Which most likey you don't have. Even if you were sitting in your ISP's office ....he'll need to have the optic fiber upto his premises (though, i agree, is not in the category of impossible). 10 Mbps is the bare minimum LAN speed I have heard of. (ordinary Ethernet). 100 Mbps is increasingly becoming common in medium and large companies. In fact 10 Mbps makes sense only in subnets having less than 20 users or so. Gigabit Ethernet for LAN is also no longer that uncommon.
  3. Best RIM Tariff For you?

ME ??? ME, THE LAZY SCUM. ME, WHO IS ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO COULD TYPE IN MY MESSAGES INTO RIMWEB, WHILE I DICTATE. ME, WHO IS LOOKING HOPEFULLY DOWN A EMPTY CORRIDOR THAT SOME F*KKER WILL COME OVER AND GET ME TEA. And you expect me to put together a EXCEL SHEET for you. Good, Very Good. It's good that you still hope that I'll actually do some useful work in my remaining life. Honestly, thank you for your unwavering confidence in me.
  4. Best RIM Tariff For you?

Doesn't look rocket science to me .... just put together an excel sheet: 1. Put in all the details (numbers) related to all tariff plans. 2. And simple cell inputs from a user, will do the job. Addition, subtraction, multipliaction and division ... that's all I think are need to do the job .. with a few if then. I don't foresee, one needing to evaluate fourier transforms or numerical integration to obtain a monthy bill, from a given usage.
  5. Awesome Optical Illusion

It's not amazing (any more!) how our brain works. What's amazing is how the brain of the person, who built up these examples, works. Surely, a lot experimentation is behind producing all this. During course of that experimentation with human eyes and brain ... someone managed to notice a small thing. (which a lot of people could easily ignore, assuming, they were just imaging things). What's given here is an amplified version of, those small little things, which were caught during experimentation. Now a good question is .... How to change the last image, so that we get to see a moving Red colored dot, in place of green. And could we have out Red moving dot on a white background, instead of a grey one. Or on a black background. How much is the flexibility to move from a pink dots all over, to say green balls all over. ----------------------------- Lastly, now you've got a tool. We know, most human being would get deluded by such an optical illusion. How can this be used in a productive way .... or to make money ( ). If nothing practical, for now, atleast this does give some vital clues about (i) how the retina captures incoming light from outside and passes over information to the optic nerver, and (ii) how brain interprests that information. Vishal: I strongly feel, that you should pursue this TOPIC OF ADVANCED MEDICAL RESEARCH. We all Indians feel bad that not a single Indian has got a Nobel Prize for Medicine, till-date. We have high hopes from you.
  6. Same Address In E-mail

I think you have a strong-enough case to take yahoo to court ... causing all this mental harassment. Yahoo is easily at fault for failing to provide you a reasonable level of service and spam protection. btw... you could actually have a windfall settlement for a million dollars, with Yahoo, out of court (... in case, you manage to scare them real hard). congrats, but remember to thank me for my valuable advice.
  7. I would rather have the private players set up their own wired networks ... if they really want to. (Though, wireless seems to be a clear winner, at the moment). It's easier and cleaner to have the old copper wired networks of BSNL / MTNL fade into obsolescense. Broadband of the future is not going to be via DSL .. but by Fiber-to-the-building. And till that happens .. Real Broadband has to come in the form of Reliance webworlds .... Video Con @ 786 kbps .. my god ... it was a real experience for me !
  8. ok, on broadband: I had my first REAL BROADBAND experience yesterday, at Reliance webworld. It was Video Con with "my prospective husband and in-laws" who are in New York. We did @786 kbps ... including a 1-to-1 with my prospective "husband" It was exhiliarating .... nearly like taking to a person on TV, and he replying back Now, that's what you say BROADBAND. 786 kbps. (I guess, my dear to-be in-laws spent between Rs. 10K to 15K for it) EDIT: A depressing part, though, is that it's looks difficult that the our marriage will take place. Hope, I find more people offering me VCs !
  9. Airtel Records Fastest Million In Mumbai

No .... mostly because of churn in GSM ... most of those are converts from other GSM (not 1 million new handsets bought !). So, Airtel's gain is Orange's / Dohphin's / BPL's loss (...atleast most of it). And I also think ... those "new" Airtel customers are also keeping their old Orange/Dolphin/BPL SIM cards with them (so that if they want, they can get back to the old operators in six months, in they want to). IMPLICATION: There is clearly a great amount of double counting in the subscribers numbers among Airtel / Orange / Dolphin / BPL. (If a new mobile subscriber .. by which I mean ... someone who didn't own a mobile, or owned a Reliance connetion .. wanted to pick up Airtel) ..he'd have to buy a new GSM set. Most of the flow of subscribers to Airtel, has not been from Reliance (because of unique handset), but from the GSM operators. Offcourse, Orange, BPL, Dolphin won't revise their subscribers numbers downwards till six months since THEY BELIEVE, the SIM cards are still valid .... and those shifted Airtel customers, are really their customers. NOW, ISN'T THAT A SEXY EXPLANATION
  10. Change Your Username

hell ! I was expecting to get some dates ..... can you please edit your post (or better delete it) ? Don't be a spoilsport .... cuteboy (btw .... I already got 5 PM messages ... ).
  11. Change Your Username

Please change my name to SexyGurl ..... pleeeeeeeeeez
  12. LG RD 5340 Launched !

Speaker Phone .... very useful while watching R-world videos,, is a key feature missing ... as compared to LG 5130 Otherwise it looks ... esp 50 wallpapers which can be saved. WOW. And 100 ringtones via R-world is also good. (LG 5130 has only 3 rworld wallpaper and 3 rworld ringtones only ... which is way too less)
  13. Tata managed to add around 434,000 subscribers on Oct ... nearly twice of what it usually does. (It added about 250,000 last month). Both figures just for mobile services.- Do not include FWP / Walky connections sold by Tata. (Mobile + FWP/Walky for Tata was about 6 lacs for Tata). Reliance was lukewarm ... addea a total of 5 lac connection, including mobile and FWP, and 355,000 mobile alone.
  14. Dot To Announce New Adc Regime

Revenue share based ADC is certainly good. Once this is done, the next target should be to eliminate ADC .... say in the next 2 or 3 years (as TRAI has already targeted). And I hope the unlimited (STD) calling plans like Plan 770 on FWP come back ASAP. Better so, the 770 type plan should also be available on RIM
  15. R World On 6255- Live Aaj Tak

I think they should revise it to atmost 4 or 5 buck per session .... if they seriously want, ANYONE to use it on a regular basis. btw ... if you launch a session ... will go on like TV on an on, for ever .... if you don't exit it? (and still be charged only Rs. 15/- if you keep watching it, for say 1 hour?)
  16. I always find 5 bars on my handset, anywhere I go in Delhi .... except Delhi Cantt. (where I have also seen just 1 bar on my handset). Never checked, but Ridge road (all surrounded by forest) would also be weak. I don't know if there are 100 towers in mumbai or not .... but I read some time back, that in Delhi there are. (Delhi has the largest no. of Subscribers, for all circles of Reliance - 1.3 million mobile, and total 1.5 million, if FWP is included). So, it's normal that CDMA towers would also be largest here. But Mumbai has a peculiarity .... everybody goes to south mumbai to work (so large needs there during daytime) ... and comes back up at night (so large needs at night) ... I read in a magazine this was causing some problem for cell operators, that they needed to have large capacity both in south and north. (Most places, including Delhi, have more evenly spread out telecom traffic, during all times of the day).
  17. Anil commits Rs 500 cr for Reliance GSM Kausik Datta in Mumbai | July 27, 2005 02:02 IST Anil Ambani has committed an investment of Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) in Reliance Telecom Ltd, the GSM (global system for mobile communication) arm of his ADAE group. Relaince Telecom has two brands - Smart for prepaid and Reliance Mobile for post-paid customers. Confirming the development, RTL sources said Ambani was instrumental in Reliance group's diversification in telecom eight years ago but he chose to stay away from the management of the company so far. He took over as the chairman of the company on Saturday. The other members of the board are S P Shukla, Satish Sheth and B D Khurana. Ambani's proposed investment in RTL follows his commitment to invest Rs 2,300 crore (Rs 23 billion) in Reliance Capital and Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 15 billion) in Reliance Energy, the financial services firm and power utility of his group, respectively. So his total investment commitment to the group stands at Rs 4,300 crore (Rs 43 billion) now. RTL has a network spread across 13 states and a subscriber base of 1.5 million. After taking over as Reliance Infocomm chairman, Anil Ambani had said he wanted to build India's most profitable GSM company over the next few years.e sources said RTL's revenue would go up to Rs 700 crore (Rs 7 billion) at the end of this financial year from last year's Rs 453 crore (Rs 4.53 billion). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sounds to me the beginning of the undoing of Infocomm ? --- wouldn't this 500 crore have yielded better returns, if invested in Infocomm. ?? Infocomm was the only big thing Anil got, which could have been the flagship company of his group. RTL, REL, Reliance capital are rather puny to offer a chair big enough for Anil to sit into. But yeah, Infocomm will, for long continue to be seen as "the company that Mukesh built". I pity Anil .... and would hate to be in his shoes. It is so much happiness to look at the walls of the house you live in, with the thought --> "I built those walls, brick by brick, with my initiative, hard work. This is mine. I deserve it" But for Anil, Infocomm means -- "this is not mine. I opposed this being made. I'll prove it, by enuring that Infocomm had no chance to succeed, in the first place". Too bad a thing, emotionally, for Anil. Bad for Mukesh too, but much less --> Mukesh: "Hate to see what I built with so much effort, being now ruthlessly being cut and broken. ... But, I have the guts to build, something like Infocomm again". Wait to see the building of an Indian Mcdonald's or Walmart, for the Mukesh group. The guy needs and has the capability to get a foothold in the retails markets of India.
  18. Grand Combination - Possible Or Not...?

Keyboard and Mouse shouldn't be a problem. Don't know about the monitor. Also, generally, people here don't take my advise seriously. Some of those who did, seem to have mysteriously disappeared from earth. Shucks, I feel bad, trying to rag a Newbie ... just ignore my cr*p (even if it smells, pretend, it doesn't exist).
  19. Becoz, national highway 17 passes thru the Thar Desert. Any doubts?
  20. It's 110 sq. km (the figure was given by some telecom expert here at rimweb, some time back). I always like to check intuitively, if it makes sense: 110 sq km, means a circle of radius 6 kms (use 110 = PI*r^2 formula). So, what is being implied is that a single tower, at the center of a circle 6 kms in radius ... will cover the entire area of the circle with a sufficiently strong signal. (In comparison, a GSM tower covers about 3-4 kms radius circle, so between 30 to 40 sq. kms). --------------------------------------------------- I don't know the area of mumbai ... but Delhi is 1400 sq. kms. (mumbai should be of that order, maybe more or less). So, just to cover the entire area of Delhi, one would need atleast: 1400 / 110 = (approx.) 14 CDMA towers. Is that sufficient for Delhi? - No, off course. Because Delhi has a very very high concentration of Reliance subscribers. So, it's not just as simple as covering all of Delhi, with the signal. The key constraint, is that a specific minimum number of SIMULTANEOUS calls should be supported. (eg. 1 CDMS tower may support 1000 channels i.e. 1000 simlutaneous calls). It means that, if in connaught place (Delhi), Relinace has only 1 CDMA tower ... only 1000 subscribers can call SIMULTANEOUSLY. Let's us say, the probablility of subscribers calling simultaneouly is 10%. Then reliance would be comfortable, having 1000/10% = 10,000 subscribers active and live in connaught place (all won't be making calls ... just active). If more than 1000 subscribers to call from the region of connaught place ... they will find NETWORK BUSY !!! -- no available free channels. There Delhi must have more CDMA towers that the minimum needed (=1400/100 i.e. 14). In reality, Delhi has something close to 100 CDMA towers. No data for mumbai .... but since Mumbai also has nearly 1.1 million reliance subscribers ... I guess, it will also be having near 100 CDMA towers. ----------------------- In contrast, something like Rishikesh in UP, may have only 1 CDMA tower (provided it's area is less than 100 sq. km ... i.e. it lies within a circle of radius 6 kms). -- because Rishikesh would have very few relinace subscribers .... say only about 10,000. One tower is sufficient to prevent the NETWORK BUSY problem, most of the time. (It's the area to be covered which is more important). --------------------- In same tone, eg., the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat may have only 5000 subcribers, but an area of 1200 sq. km. If reliance wants to cover all of Sabarkantha ... 1 CDMA tower won't do (even though only 5000 subscribers need to be covered). It needs atleast 1200/110=12 towers. What a cost ! 12 towers for just 5000 subscribers. About 1 tower (costing about 1 to 1.5 crore), for each 400 subscribers. That is exactly why, it sometimes becomes uneconomical to set up cell sites in area of low subscriber density.
  21. Phone Book Transfer @ RWorld

From the above posts .. I can make an inference that there is a problem whenever a Nokia phone is involved in the phone transfer. Samsung and LG work fine.
  22. Eid Mubarak !

Actually, rimweb.in could send an SMS greeting to all it's members (atleast those who have disclosed their RIM nos.). I am sure there are sufficient technical experts in rimweb to do the auto-sending of SMSes from a PC to RIM mobiles.
  23. EDGE or wCDMA

I forgot to mention ... even if some RICHIE is willing to pay @ 1 rupee per second ... it's not available all over India. (leave alone EDGE ... even GPRS (which is text & static photo only - no vids), is not availave all over India). If Reliance Network is there ... R-world is there. No Exception. Yes, I think you should change the topic name to "wCDMA" in place of "Edge (enhanced Data Rates for Global Evol" - "...going to give GSM an edge over CDMA? EDGE exists in India ... just for the advertising. "EVEN WE CAN PROVIDE VIDEO DATA SERVICES" Small Print: Sorry, you poor b*****ds are too poor to be bothered with upper-end Data Services. Be content with SMS. And live in awe of EDGE, meant only for Rich Business People.
  24. Live TV eg. Aajtak Live (same as that available via cable on TV) is already available on some handsets. I used to think Live TV broadcast was definitely 3G ... but reliance seems to be trying to do it on CDMA 2000 1X itselt !!! Maybe, after EVDO, multiple channels could be available , including live Cricket matches, just like TV. Also, Video Conference between two people may be possible (currently one has to go to a wired landline network eg. webworlds to do videocon. It's not possible using the mobile phone itself, because of limited bandwith available on the mobile). Advanced uses (though limited usage) could be in tele-medication (eg. doctor sitting in a city could see and direct a surgery in a remote place). Basically, EVDO would mean more bandwidth ... one can just start thinking of means of where all to use that large bandwidth !
  25. EDGE or wCDMA

10 paise per kb .... "nakhun ki mael" ! (i.e. dirt on the edge of the nail). Enjoy EDGE @Hutch. HUTCH TV Zindabad. Chota Recharge - Poori Baat. In TEN RUPEES ... you have ONE HUNDRED 10 paise ... so 100x10kb = 1MB. Enjoy 1 MB of HUTCH TV, with Chota-Recharge, Poori Baat. --- Now EDGE speed is stated above at 80 to 160 kbps (let's assume 120 kbps on an average). So, 1MB / 120kbps = 8 seconds. NOW THE FUN: With Chota Recharge - Poori Baat, YOU CAN SEE HUTCH TV FOR 8 SECONDS. C'MON, NOW 8 SECONDS OF HUTCH TV FOR JUST RS. 10/- 1 RUPEE PER SECOND. WOW! ENJOY EDGE @HUTCH
