Reliance Infocomm on Tuesday said the company has not violated the licence agreement in the alleged re-routing of international calls saying the usage of Home Country Direct service by the company was fully recognised by the International Telecom Union. Even on the charges of tampering Caller Line Identification, Reliance's counsel Harish Salve said, "More than 40 per cent of the ISD calls do not have proper CLI and in such calls there is a directive from the government to operators to put their own switch numbers for identifying the details of such calls like origination." Arguing before the telecom dispute appellate tribunal TDSAT challenging government's decision to impose Rs 150 crore (Rs 1.5 billion) penalty for violating the licence by illegally rerouting of ISD calls, Salve said CLI was a weak measure of security concern as in large number of calls CLI does not come through and thus termed Government's allegation that this could pose a security threat as "bogey". TDSAT will hear the argument of both parties -- Reliance and department of telecom-- till February 11 and is likely to pronounce the judgement after the arguments are over. Even the PSU, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, which does not own ILD licence, uses the HCD service to offer operator assisted international calls, he added.

Q. What should be the cost of the Receive Equipment for DD DIRECT+? A. The indicative price of a Receive System may be about Rs.3000 to Rs.3500. It may however vary with the make of equipment and will also depend upon the local taxes/prevailing custom duty etc. _________________ deepu, i think its 3500/-

Sting may have left crowds in Bangalore and New Delhi begging for more, but the swell season continues for rock music enthusiasts in India. The Eagles (best known in these parts for their anthem Hotel California) are due to tour India, possibly sometime in June, according to sources close to the proceedings. That is, of course, besides the Mark Knopfler treat confirmed for March first week. The former Dire Straits frontman (who, we hear, is Sachin Tendulkar's favourite musician) with one of the most instantly identifiable guitar sounds in the history of music will play in Delhi and Mumbai. He has returned to music from a near fatal motorcycle accident last March with Shangri La, named after the studio the album was recorded in. Bangalore, reeling from the imminent live band ban, is going to miss out. There are also whispers of Norah Jones, Pandit Ravi Shankar's daughter who created a sensation at the Grammies with her debut album Come Away With Me, performing in India. "She is, of course, among the smaller artistes who the event managers are in talks with," say sources. Source : Rediff.com

Sprint Teams with Reliance Infocomm to Expand IP Network to India Full portfolio of IP solutions now available to meet growing global data communications demand Media Contacts: Stephanie Taliaferro, Sprint, +1 913-794-3658 stephanie.c.taliaferro@mail.sprint.com Jimmy Mogal, Reliance Infocomm Limited, +91 22 3038 5128 jimmy.mogal@relianceinfo.com OVERLAND PARK, Kan., and MUMBAI, India — 01/11/2005 Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announces the expansion of its global SprintLink(SM) Internet protocol (IP) network to India as a part of continuing efforts to serve the global communications needs of U.S.-based and global multinational corporations. Sprint, in cooperation with Reliance Infocomm, now will be able to offer its comprehensive suite of corporate data services to help companies connect to employees, offices or business partners in and outside of India. IP nodes have been deployed in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore. As part of this expansion effort, Sprint has signed network agreements with Reliance Infocomm, an India-based communication firm. Reliance Infocomm will provide international connectivity to India and intracountry “last mile” connectivity for Sprint in servicing U.S.-based and global multinational corporations. One of the first companies to benefit from this IP service arrangement in India is Black & Veatch Corporation, a U.S.-based leading global engineering, consulting and construction company with an office in Pune, India. A long-time Sprint customer, Black & Veatch uses a variety of voice and data services and has been working with Sprint to migrate its data network from frame relay to IP-based. Sprint and Reliance will provide IP data connectivity to support their wide area network (WAN) for the office in Pune. Paget Alves, president – Strategic Markets, Sprint Business Solutions, said that Sprint’s reputation as one of the few truly global network players provides a compelling reason for multinational organizations to look to Sprint for their network needs. “Sprint is deploying its network resources in areas most important to the U.S.-based and global multinational corporations that make up our customer base,” said Alves. “This new connectivity to India joins an IP presence to connect locations in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific, ensuring that Sprint continues to meet the growing needs of our customers.” Key services now available in India through Reliance include dedicated Internet, MPLS VPN, managed security and managed network services, as well as a market-leading Layer 2 suite of IP-based services (based on next-generation L2TPv3 technology) designed to facilitate the migration from legacy network services. All services are backed by Sprint’s industry-leading Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The Sprint/Reliance Infocomm relationship will extend Sprint’s reach across India through Reliance Infocomm’s network backbone, based on a fully redundant architecture covering over 1,400 cities of India. “Together, this relationship will benefit both companies by efficiently extending the reach of our respective networks,” said Bhagwan Khurana, Group President, Reliance Infocomm. “By working with Sprint, Reliance Infocomm is expanding its international reach, and this is yet another addition in our portfolio of services being offered to Indian transnational corporate houses. They will now be able to enjoy the tremendous reach of Sprint’s international network.” Financial details of the agreements between Sprint and Reliance were not disclosed. Sprint supports multinational customers, including over 95 percent of the Fortune 1000, with one of the world’s leading communications networks, providing global voice, data and Internet services. Sprint currently has over 1,100 points of presence across six continents and carries more than 25 percent of the world’s Internet traffic over its Tier 1 backbone. NEW DELHI: Slowly but surely, technology is showing up its ugly face too. Today it's increasingly being used by new-age criminals in a variety of ways. The latest is mobile phone cloning Millions of mobile phones users, be it GSM or CDMA, run the risk of having their phones cloned. And the worst part is that there isn’t much that you can do to prevent this. A resident of Moradabad, Mohammed Yasin was arrested from South Delhi on Friday for andcloning mobile phones using them to facilitate ISD calls. A senior police officer says that this is just the tip of the iceberg. "Yasin used a software called Patagonia which can be used to clone only CDMA phones but there are software packages available in the market which can be used to clone even GSM phones. The man who is trying to clone your GSM phone just needs to know your International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) or instrument number. We are trying to identify phone dealers in Gaffar Market and Nehru Place who can make it possible," says the police officer, adding that Yasin had bought the software from Nehru Place. The 15-digit IMEI number is programmed into the handset when it is manufactured. The officer cites the example of a businessman who recently cloned the GSM phone of his rival and sent an SMS to the police that a Delhi VVIP would die in a blast. According to joint commissioner of police (special cell) Karnal Singh, not just the SIM but also the IMEI number can be cloned making it difficult to detect the crime. "The only precaution he can take is to scrutinise the phone bills and find out whether or not it mentions any call which was not made by him. We are talking to service pro-viders to look for a way out," he says. A SIM can be cloned again and again and they can be used at different places. Police say they can track messages and calls sent by cloned phones. However, if the accused manages to also clone the IMEI number of the handset, for which softwares are available, there is no way he can be traced. Adding to the police woes is the fact that the sale of Patagonia or other softwares used for cloning is legal in the country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- some people thought only cdma phones had drawback/faults and could be hacked... but heres the gsm side story as well.

New Delhi, Feb 01: Reliance continues to dominate headlines for all the wrong reasons. Reliance Infocomm is now facing a legal hurdle because of its website. The Delhi police have registered a case against Reliance for violating the preconception and prenatal diagnostic technique act. Police say that the website provides information about sex determination of an unborn child. "On the website there are tips on sex selection which are against the Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Technique Act 1994," says Ashok Chand, DCP, Special Cell. The matter came to light when Delhi police filed a complaint in the Tiz Hazari court and the court in turn asked the police to investigate the case. "We will investigate Reliance Infocomm's role in this," adds the DCP. Defending itself, Reliance says that as soon as it got to know about this violation, it withdrew the objectionable information from its website.
