Updated: Apple Sues Samsung - Apple Wins Patent Case
rajanmehta replied to sgiitk's topic in The Lounge
Apple Will Pay Nokia to Settle Patent Suit SourceJun 14, 2011 1:10 pm Nokia and Apple have settled an almost two-year long legal battle over patents with an agreement that will see Apple pay a lump sum and ongoing royalties to the European cell-phone maker. The financial terms and structure of the contract were not disclosed by Nokia. "We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees," said Stephen Elop, Nokia's president and CEO, in a statement. The two companies have been engaged in patent disputes worldwide since October 2009, when Nokia filed a complaint against Apple with the U.S. District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple's iPhone infringed on Nokia telecommunication and wireless patents. The suit alleged Apple was infringing on ten Nokia patents covering wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. Since then, the legal battle has intensified, with the companies also filing complaints against each other with the U.S. International Trade Commission. In March this year, Nokia expanded the ITC complaint to include an additional seven patents and alleged, "Apple infringes additional Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, tablets and computers." The license agreement will settle all patent litigation between the companies, and the withdrawal of complaints in the U.S. ITC by Nokia and Apple, Nokia said. Apple spokesman Alan Hely said the company is happy the dispute with Nokia is over, and that they can now get back to focusing on their respective businesses. "Apple and Nokia have agreed to drop all of our current lawsuits and enter into a license covering some of each others' patents, but not the majority of the innovations that make the iPhone unique," Hely said -

Online there is Gift360.in here http://www.gift360.i...submenuheader=0 but all mobiles are horribly overprized (They have to recover interest somehow.. There is no free lunch) Another option for SBI card is buying mobiles from physical Aircel Stores & pay in 3 EMI's. Details here http://www.sbicard.c...el-landing.html 3rd option is buying from anywhere above Rs 2,500 and convert to EMI through SBI Cards flexipay scheme, Details here http://www.sbicard.c...n_fp_mas_042011 Personally i won't suggest any of this credit card EMI schemes. They are never FREE & turns out costly. Heavy interest & processing fees are always factored either in product price or EMI. But if one is totally tight on liquidity and lure of goodies is irresistable, then it's a different matter altogether. Still be wise & count the total damage first..- 6,376 replies

Apple Recall Could Affect iPad 2 Supplies Source A recall of some Apple iPads could further constrain supplies of the popular tablet device at a time when the company is already struggling to meet demand. But the latest hiccup is unlikely to have long-term consequences. Apple is recalling a number of Verizon-issued iPad 2s after they were sent out with identical cellular serial numbers. It's not clear how many units are affected but 9to5mac quotes an anonymous Apple store employee who said he sent more than 100 back to Apple's headquarters. Customers are peeved, chiming in on an Apple discussion forum. The issue appears to affect both 32GB and 64GB iPads and revolves around Mobile Equipment Identifiers (MEIDs) that identify the device on the Verizon CDMA cellular network. These are used for billing purposes, among other things. Because GSM-based iPads from AT&T rely on micro-SIM cards, which users insert into the devices, it's unlikely they'll also be affected by this issue. AllThingsD quotes an Apple representative who said "duplicate MEID numbers were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G network." Apple has already sold 25 million iPads, it said at the WWDC earlier this week, and aims to sell eight million more this quarter. However, a tragic explosion at the Foxconn plant that manufactures iPads has added to supply concerns. The earthquake in Japan has also made it difficult for some manufacturers to receive components, although there are reports that Apple is seeking new component suppliers to step up production of tablet devices. It's not clear if the MEID is irrevocably hard-coded onto each unit, or whether it's merely stored as a variable within the firmware. If the latter is the case, it could be possible for Apple to easily fix the issue by reflashing the device ROM.

The Death of SMS Has Been Greatly Exaggerated Source The announcement of iMessage and the return of the rumor of a similar messaging system for Android have created a tidal wave of industry analysts, enthusiasts, and media talking heads calling for the death of SMS. The trouble is that everyone is making it sound like they are predicting the death of SMS. There is a big difference there, and one that is filled with far more nuance than would seem at first glance. The difference is that no one really wants SMS as a communication tool to die, but everyone wants to end awful carrier fees. Everyone is also pointing in the wrong direction for the solution to this problem. iMessage, BlackBerry Messenger, the rumored Android offering, Kik, Beluga, Twitter, Google Voice, Facebook messaging and every single IM program in existence. All have been positioned to take down SMS and free us from ridiculous fees. But, all of those apps come with their own limitations and pitfalls. The first three are (or would be) tied to specific operating systems. Each one inherently limits its potential audience. iMessage may be a threat to any lingering reason someone might have to stick with BlackBerry, but it poses no real threat to SMS as a communications tool. The next three: Kik, Beluga, and Twitter all rely on user adoption, because while the apps are multi-platform, they are still closed systems. Google Voice requires user adoption to use, lacks any attachment system, and isn't available outside of the US. Facebook is surprisingly the closest, because it is cross-platform, and can send or receive messages through Facebook, SMS or e-mail. But, as with all the rest, it still relies on user adoption. Requirements The reason that SMS is the king is because of its ubiquity. It's on every phone, not just every BlackBerry, or every Android, or every iPhone, every phone, including that 3 year old LG feature phone that your grandparents use. And remember, feature phones still far outnumber smartphones in the market. The gap may be shrinking, but that gap is still enormous and those out there who don't need their phone to do much more than make phone calls won't be jumping on the smartphone wagon any time soon. That's a big piece of the puzzle that no one wants to acknowledge. Eventually, smartphones will be the dominant mobile device, and that day may be much closer in some countries than others. That is number one on the list of requirements for an SMS-killer: operability with feature phones. The list of necessary features for an "SMS-killer" is detailed, but not impossible. The system needs to work on every phone on every carrier. Why should a Sprint user care about iMessage? Or, why should an iPhone user care about BBM? No true solution can be a closed system, it needs ubiquity. It also needs to handle: messaging, attachments, international use, and group messaging. We all need those features. So, what are the options that meet those criteria? There are only two: SMS and e-mail. Real options And, that's the surprising thing: no one ever mentions e-mail in this discussion. E-mail passes every test: everyone has an e-mail address, it has all the features, runs on every platform and carrier throughout the world, and it's free. And, it's available on a lot more feature phones than one would expect, and even beats out SMS in some cases. In Japan, SMS is not cross-carrier, so a DoCoMo customer can't text a Softbank user, etc. But, every phone has an e-mail client and every phone is given an e-mail address, so it's the best messaging option, and it's available on every phone, as long as you have a minimal data plan. And, it seems a lot easier for manufacturers to build e-mail clients into phones than anything else, because e-mail has standard protocols behind it. The other option is the one that makes more sense, but only assuming consumers actually have the will to stand up to carriers: force carriers to make SMS free worldwide. The boom of cell phones destroyed the racket that carriers were running with long-distance calling rates, so why hasn't the smartphone/data boom in mobile done the same with SMS yet? Each SMS is such a tiny amount of data that it is absurd that anyone has to pay extra for it, and even more absurd when you consider how much data our smartphones eat up on a daily basis. Even better, consider how many e-mails you send for free all the time. The trouble with looking towards these closed systems is that they are all inherently limited and therefore a short term solution. The best we can achieve by adopting iMessage or BBM is to force carriers to make SMS free, at which point we move back to SMS, because what value does iMessage or BBM have if SMS is free? It would be like going back to the original e-mail systems where each was a closed system, and no one could send e-mails to anyone on a different system. It may have some short term benefits to small sets of people, but we still need a universal solution to the problem. And, the answer there is still the same: free SMS, or e-mail on every phone worldwide. Everyone is quick to say that carriers won't willingly give up the SMS cash cow, and that is true, but that doesn't mean they can't be forced to give it up. Mobile phones killed the notion of long-distance calling. Options like Skype and Google Voice are killing the idea of expensive international calling rates. E-mail killed the idea of paying to communicate with people worldwide. iMessage won't kill SMS. At best, it will simply kill the entire BlackBerry market. And, none of these so-called SMS-killers are going to actually kill SMS. So, either we adopt e-mail as the one true messaging system, or we force carriers to make SMS free. One or both options are inevitable, but how long it takes is up to consumers.

Adobe issues security warning about Flash Player 10.3 Source According to Adobe, those using Flash Player 10.3 on their phones need to make sure that they have downloaded the latest version of the application. Because the security of the program has been compromised, make sure that version 10.3.185.23 is on your handset and if not, head over to the Android Market and install it. The software developer is saying that if you visit a malicious web site, you could receive emails designed to trick you into clicking on a "malicious link". -
Verizon Samsung Fascinate - Beauty With The Brains

Verizon is Sending Maintenance Update ED04 To Samsung Fascinate Source Owners of the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon should be getting prompted to install an OTA update pretty soon – but it's just a maintenance update with a couple of bug fixes. It fixes two things. The two things in question? It improves the delivery of over-the-air updates and incoming call connectivity. You should be able to pull this update now, if you haven't gotten it already. -

Reliance CDMA EVDO Activation Request Here For Aam Admi
rajanmehta replied to @mitJ@in's topic in Data services
Ye shayad tumhare liye nahi hai... I think you are talking about having EVDO on your imported Hero? Please read point 4 of the opening post, Implies that is is not meant for imported handsets EVDO activation. And Reliance is the only CDMA Operator having it's own sick defination of OMH. In India as well as across the world having an OMH handset means EVDO will work out of the box. But Reliance thinks otherwise and keeps EVDO off by default for every subscriber. So even people buying OMH SIM card capable phones (Anyway very less number of phones are OMH Sim capable) have to run around for EVDO activation on their number. Something which should work out of the box becomes a Reliance "Meherbani" and harrowing experience for the Customer because their CC's most of the time have absolutely no clue what the Customer is talking about!! So instead of that running around behind Reliance Customer CC for OMH Sim phone holders, Amitji will take the requests here and forward to Reliance for EVDO Activation (Because he has Reliance CC Module being a Franchisee?). A nice praise worthy initiative to save whatever bachi kuchi "aabru" Reliance has from CDMA old timers & this forum lovers.. Whatever few CDMA loyalists Reliance is able to hold on to is because of few such people here.. Amitji can correct if i have understood wrongly.. -

Techtree Videocon d2h, the DTH arm of Videocon group, has launched India's first High Definition - Digital Video Recorder (DVR) with 3D. Now its customers can enjoy 3D content once the 3D feed is live on air. Videocon d2h Satellite HD DVR with 3D goes a step ahead of the competition with the addition of 3D. Like most DVR, users can pause, rewind and forward live TV and record up to 200 hours. It also facilitates Auto Serial Recording. Videocon d2h service will have its own active channel for the 3D content and also channels in High Definition. Other key features include 16:9 aspect ratio, 5x digital picture quality and High Definition Digital sound. The highest video resolution supported is 1080i, at par with competition. Customers can watch their favorite channels in HD format by subscribing to its HD feed, if available. The newly added channels in HD format are Discovery HD, NGC HD, Movies Now HD, Travel XP, HD Active Music, HD d2h Movies, Baby TV, Spacetoon, FX, Fox Crime, Big CBS Prime, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, NGC Wild, NGC Adventure and NGC Music. Videocon has promised more than 30 HD channels and a couple of 3D channels on the d2h platform by June 2011. Saurabh Dhoot, director of Videocon Group said, "We will constantly strive to give consumer more than what they expect. Our High Definition Digital Video Recorder with 3D acts as a bridge between the 3D Television and the 3D Channel feed. This product will be taking your viewing experience to a new level". Videocon has competitively priced its new HD 3D set-top boxes. The one with DVR is priced at Rs. 3,990 while the one without recording capabilities (but all other feature included) can be purchased for Rs. 2,490. However, to enjoy this 3D service, one will need a 3D LCD/LED/Plasma TV. The announcement of this new service would be music to the ears of those who have already spent a fortune on buying a 3D TV. However, if you don't have a 3D TV, you can still reap the benefits of the HD transmission and the DVR sans 3D. The wait for 3D content may be over in less than a couple of months with the IPL semifinals and Final slated to be telecast in 3D.
