  7. LG Optimus 3D

Hands-On with the LG Optimus 3D (UPDATE: Launching in May 2011 in India) Source: Tech2 The availability of 3D content is a big issue at the moment so the justification for purchasing a 3D device is, simply put, a way to future proof yourself. Content is however, on an express train to Delivery-town so the wait is not going to be too long. Thus 3D fans will be happy to know that LG's Optimus 3D smartphone is on its way and should be here in just a couple of months. However, at a recent press conference showcasing LG's latest line of Smart 3D TVs, I got an opportunity to check out the handset that also happened to be part of their experience zone. Here are my first impressions. Design I'll be brutally honest here - I'm not too thrilled with the design as it's quite generic as high-end smartphones go. Not like the Xperia Arc or the Incredible S that do have that certain flair about them. The Optimus 3D's most unusual feature are the dual camera cameras at the rear with an LED flash in between. Touch sensitive keys are located below the rather impressive looking glassless 3D ready display. The 4.3-inch LCD panel features a 480 x 800 pixel resolution with 16 million colors and is as sharp as it is bright. Even in the psychedelic glare of the colorful lights at the display, the screen was easily visible. Not the best looking phone there is but it's quite slim and sleek. At just 11.9mm in depth it's slim phone but a bit on the heavy side, weighing in at about 168 grams. On the right hand side is where you'll find a micro USB port which is almost attached to the HDMI out port. 3D content can easily be viewed on supported TV's or monitors via this channel but you will of course need the glasses for viewing. HDMI Out even for 3D content Like I said, it might not have a design that you'd go crazy about but its USP is 3D content support. Features Products like the Optimus 3D mobile with its 3D rendering capabilities are going to be big when they're launched. Since the whole 3D bug is already doing the rounds, the superb 3D UI and functionality of the handset to increase or decrease the level and depth of 3D (from every screen be it videos, images or games) will make this a hard handset to pass up. The fact that you have the option of easily switching to 3D and and so easily makes it quite appealing. A whole 3D menu for your viewing pleasure Playing games like Asphalt 6 and Nova on this large glass-less 3D display was quite an experience. Since you could reduce the level of 3D rendering, it was much easier on the eyes depending on the external lighting conditions. Games and even LG's own Optimus 3D's 3D media gallery and 3D UI are already in place for these products to showcase all kinds of preloaded goodies (hopefully). The YouTube 3D app will direct you to all the 3D content available on the web. Manage your menu, look at all the 3D content I found the UI to be quite intuitive and user friendly, especially since LG is using a customized interface on top of Android 2.2 (for now, I was assured that a Gingerbread update would be out later, post launch). The menus are set up so that you can create sections like 'Media' – with all media related apps that can be dragged and dropped into this space or 'Business' or any other section you care to come up with. Their Optimus One and even the Optimus GT540 both feature similar capabilities. Even this prototype was running smoothly thanks to the onboard 1 GHz processor of the Dual Core variety. YouTube app takes you straight to 3D content I have to say, watching videos on the large display in 3D was quite comfortable and although I don't think I'd be too comfortable watching an entire movie in 3D, short clips were quite entertaining. LG has also thrown in Dolby Stereo audio enhancement to sweeten the deal and the handset also supports 1080p video playback with DivX and XviD codec support, as well. With 8GB of internal storage and support for microSD cards up to 32GB, rest assured you won't ever run out of space for your media. Camera LG's Optimus 3D is loaded up with a pair of cameras, as I mentioned. In Standard Definition as in, not 3D, you can record up to 1080p@24fps or take pictures at a 5 megapixel resolution. If you choose to capture in 3D (stereoscopic) the camera auto scales down to 3 megapixels but can still record video in HD – 720p@30fps. From what we saw, the image quality isn't too bad in both 2D and 3D, but I was told that LG was still working out a few kinks in the camera module and to expect more out of it. Nice! Dual cameras for Stereoscopic fun Verdict It's a handset to hold out for. So it's a bit heavy, I say, no big deal. For the kind of functionality it brings to the table in the form of 3D media and gaming as well as all else that a high end Android handset can offer, it just might be worth saving up for. Pricing was not revealed of course, but I'm putting it somewhere in the Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 40,000 league. It's a remarkable piece of hardware but my biggest concern is – what kind of battery life will this offer? Android 2.2, just for the time being, Gingerbread is on the way

  10. 2G Scam: ED to Attach Properties of Errant Telecos Outlook APR 27, 2011 The Enforcement Directorate today told the Supreme Court that property worth Rs 2,000 crore each will be attached against two companies which are involved in the 2G spectrum scam during the tenure of former telecom minister A Raja. "Property worth Rs 2,000 crore has to be attached relating to these companies," senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the ED, submitted before a bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly. Venugopal, who was reading the excerpts of the fresh status report of the ED submitted in a sealed cover, did not mention the names of the company but assured that attachment proceedings will be initiated soon and will be completed within two months. He hinted that attachment orders will be issued shortly under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), against the two companies against whom the ED has so far registered the complaints. "It will be done in two months time against the companies whose names have been mentioned in the complaints. We have to collect details of their properties as many of the companies keet benami properties," the senior advocate said when the bench asked how much time will the ED take to complete the investigation. The ED in its status report said investigation was in progress regarding the involvement of five foreign companies in the 2G scam which are registered in Virgin Island. On hearing this, the bench asked "what is the response of the CBI on it?" Venugopal said till now the ED has not written about it to the RBI and future course of investigation will follow. However, he said action has been taken and complaint has been registered for FEMA violation of Rs 4,000 crore which will be added on as the investigation will progress and attachment will start. The ED gave details of various financial transaction connected with the scam and said that the company connected with Shahid Usman Balwa's D B Realty was involved in the movement of Rs 1,400 crore. "The companies are connected with D B Realty. Funds started moving from a real estate company. Rs 1400 crore went from the top to the bottom and goes back to the original source," Venugopal said referring to the transaction of money among various companies after the grant of 2G licence. Meanwhile, CBI also filed fresh status report about its probe and sought more time to complete the investigation relating to the allocation of spectrum during the period of 2001-07. The bench appreciated the probe done by the CBI and ED and said they have done a "commendable job". The ED in its complaint registered on April 9 had charged Swan Telecom with committing FEMA contraventions to the tune of Rs 3,608 crore. It said that Swan Telecom issued 44.73 per cent shares to Dubai-based Etisalat and 5.27 per cent shares to Genex Exim as per agreement on September 23, 2009. The ED had also alleged that Swan Telecom had disclosed that issue of equity to Genex Exim was under resident category but during investigations it was found that "it was an indirect foreign investment in Swan because funds into Genex were brought from Dubai". CBI told the court that during the investigation it has become clear that rules were circumvented and huge amount by way bribery exchanged in the allocation of 2G spectrum. It said that top officials of the telecom companies including their managing directors and share holders were "directly" involved in bribery. While perusing the CBI's status report, the bench observed that there were some "revealing" information in it relating to a particular company whose officials are likely to be named in the charge sheet. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation, on whose petition CBI probe was ordered in the 2G scam, said the agency in its first charge sheet named Swan Telecom and Reliance Telecom as accused in the case along with three top officers of later. However, he said that CBI has not named Reliance Telecom's chairman Anil Ambani as an accused who has 50 per cent share in the company. However, the Bench said, "This is for the special court (exclusively dealing with the 2G case) to consider." Bhushan said CBI officers are doing a difficult job under tremendous pressure and "big fish" are not apprehended. He said Swan Telecom was financed by the Reliance and the person who benefits is having 50 per cent share and is the chairman of the company. Further, he said that Swan Telecom was financed by Reliance Telecom itself which was ineligible for 2G licence. The Bench said since there is a special court to deal with other such issues and senior advocate U U Lalit has been appointed as special prosecutor in the case "there is a strong safeguard". "We have gone through the progress of the investigation and officers of the CBI has done commendable job despite several constraints relating to resource, manpower and time constraint," the bench said.

LG brings flicker-free Cinema 3D to Computer Monitors, Excel will never be the same Source LG is bringing its Cinema 3D tech to computers with the new D41P and D42P families of monitors. The 1920 x 1080 displays range in size from 21.5-inches to 25-inches and feature the company's FPR (Film Pattern Retarder) coating that ditches the heavy active shutter glasses used by many other manufacturers for the lighter passive variety. Both monitors also sport a 5ms response time, an HDMI 1.4 port, and a 2D conversion feature -- perfect for whipping up Word docs in eye-popping 3D. Pricing is still up in the air, but the D41P and D42P lines are available in South Korea now and a global rollout will begin in June, with Europe next in line for some flicker-free 3D fun. Press Release: LG Opens New Era Of 3D Monitors With Brightest, Most Comfortable 3D Viewing SEOUL--(Korea Newswire) April 26, 2011 -- LG Electronics (LG) today announced the release of two CIN-EMA 3D Monitors –D41P and D42P – equipped with LG's new Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology. With FPR 3D technology, the monitors offer a brighter display, clearer images, and a "Flicker-Free" certified 3D picture that makes 3D viewing more comfortable. "Although 3D is one of the hottest items in technology today, some consumers are holding back from purchasing 3D products because of concerns over performance and price," said Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division, LG Home Entertainment Company. "With CINEMA 3D Monitors, we've addressed all these concerns. The advanced picture quality, more comfortable glasses and competitive pricing makes it very hard to keep put-ting off 3D." The monitors' "Flicker-Free" certification, shared with LG's CINEMA 3D TVs, was awarded by TÜV and Intertek, two of Europe's top safety certification agencies. The certi-fication recognizes that LG's CINEMA 3D Monitors have largely eradicated onscreen flicker, which had occasionally caused dizziness and nausea among viewers watching conventional 3D displays. With CINEMA 3D Monitors, viewers are now able to watch 3D content for longer periods in greater comfort. Thanks to LG's FPR technology, LG CINEMA 3D Monitors also provide clearer, brighter 3D images and lower crosstalk, meaning less eyestrain. In contrast with conventional 3D glasses, LG CINEMA 3D glasses are lightweight and entirely free of electrical parts, so and the glasses are lighter – thus more comfortable – and they never need to be recharged. LG CINEMA 3D Monitors also boast great compatibility. The monitors work with all graphic cards and are compatible with popular home PC operating systems. They support HDMI 1.4 for easy hook-up with other 3D devices, making it possible to play 3D content without a PC. Also, a 2D to 3D conversion function converts regular content into top-quality 3D on the fly, so viewers will never be short of 3D content to enjoy. In addition, a recent detailed survey conducted in five markets by Research Company TNS found that 77 percent of respondents expressed a preference for FPR type 3D monitor based on image quality, comfort and convenience of glasses. The survey involved blind testing after the product demonstration of almost 230 consumers across both Shutter Glass (SG) type and FPR type 3D monitor with respondents viewing a series of 3D video clips on each screen. The LG Cinema 3D Monitor will be launched in Korea today and will be rolled out globally early June starting in Europe. News Source: LG Electronics Inc. Web Site: http://www.lge.co.kr

Information Technology (Guidelines for Cyber Cafe) Rules, 2011. If one has the time, should read it fully. Barring Cyber Cafe Regulations which has some hilarious provisions, the other regulations are good actually. They deal with protection of private data, privacy rules and has many provisions protecting sensitive individual info, suggesting how a service provider can or cannot use personal info. I would say first comprehensive guidelines for the internet jungle out there. Unfortunately Media generally never bother to study the full thing & pick up random juicy tid bits to tickle & sensationalise. Not to say that few words of 3 (i) is not having subjective meaning... Here is the offending provision... Read in totality... 3. Due diligence to be observed by intermediary.— The intermediary shall observe following due diligence while discharging his duties, namely : ― (1) The intermediary shall publish the rules and regulations, privacy policy and user agreement for access or usage of the intermediary's computer resource by any person. 15. @shripalkawdia Everytime i called Letsbuy, generally the call is always picked up after 2-3 rings... Sometimes comes engaged... Overall not more than 2-3 minutes to get through.. Just called now to check on Phone Number 011 - 40808888... It was picked up after 3 rings... Try calling again from other number/network.. MicroSD card formatted with FAT32 won't copy a single file size of more than 4GB and for 2GB files, the problem may be with the phone's OS not supporting if copying directly to phone with card inside. Try this: Put the card in a Standalone Card Reader. Format with NTFS file system. While keeping the card in reader, try copying file sizes of more than 2GB. If it works, then problem is not with the Card. Also format the card with FAT32 before putting in the phone as the phone may not support NTFS.
  16. Android-Number 1 Smartphone Platform Now

U.S. Smartphone Market: Who's the Most Wanted? Nielsen Monthly Survey of U.S. smartphone consumers 26th April 2011 Things change quickly in the U.S. smartphone market. According to The Nielsen Company's monthly surveys of U.S. mobile consumers from July-September 2010, consumers planning on getting a new smartphone had a very clear preference: A third (33%) wanted an Apple iPhone. Slightly more than a quarter (26%) said they desired a device with the Google Android operating system (OS). And 13 percent said they wanted a RIM Blackberry. But consumer preferences can be fickle. Those same surveys for January 2011 – March 2011 show just how much things have changed: According to the latest figures, 31 percent of consumers who plan to get a new smartphone indicated Android was now their preferred OS. Apple's iOS has slipped slightly in popularity to 30 percent and RIM Blackberry is down to 11 percent. Almost 20 percent of consumers are unsure of what to choose next. Those dynamics are already translating into sales. Half of those surveyed in March 2011 who indicated they had purchased a smartphone in the past six months said they had chosen an Android device. A quarter of recent acquirers said they bought an iPhone and 15 percent said they had picked a Blackberry phone. Which brings us to the installed base of smartphone consumers: As of March 2011, 37 percent of mobile consumers who owned a smartphone had a device with an Android OS. Apple's iOS, claimed by 27 percent of consumers, is now outpacing Blackberry, which has 22 percent of the market.

  20. Updated: Apple Sues Samsung - Apple Wins Patent Case

Apple sued over iPad, iPhone tracking Source SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc was accused of invasion of privacy and computer fraud by two customers who claim in a lawsuit that the company is secretly recording movements of iPhone and iPad users. Vikram Ajjampur, an iPhone user in Florida, and William Devito, a New York iPad customer, sued April 22 in federal court in Tampa, Florida, seeking a judge's order barring the alleged data collection. The complaint cited a report last week by two computer programmers claiming that Apple's iOS4 operating system is logging latitude-longitude coordinates along with the time a spot is visited. The programmers said Apple devices are collecting about a year's worth of location data. Apple hasn't commented on the matter since the April 20 report was released. "We take issue specifically with the notion that Apple is now basically tracking people everywhere they go," Aaron Mayer, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said today in a telephone interview. "If you are a federal marshal, you have to have a warrant to do this kind of thing, and Apple is doing it without one." Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked to meet with Apple and Google Inc. executives to discuss reports that their products collect information about users' locations. Madigan wrote to both companies asking what information they store, its purposes and for how long, according to a statement by her office today. Regulators investigating French, German, Italian and South Korean regulators are investigating the alleged location collection feature on Apple devices following publication of the report by Alasdair Allan, a senior research follow in Astronomy at University of Exeter in England, and Pete Warden, a former Apple software engineer, authorities in those countries disclosed last week. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment on the suit. The plaintiffs are seeking to represent a group of U.S. customers whose iPhones and iPads have the operating system that allegedly collects location data, Mayer said. About one-third to one-half of the country's 60 million iPhone users could be part of the class, he said. Ajjampur and Devito are also asking for refunds because they wouldn't have bought their products had they known about the feature, Mayer said. The complaint says the alleged location collection violates federal computer fraud laws and consumer fraud and deceptive trade practice laws in many states. The lawsuit seeks unspecified punitive damages for alleged negligent misrepresentation. The Apple customers said they were unaware of the tracking system and never consented to it. Even if they disable the global-positioning function on their devices, the tracking system keeps working, according to the complaint.
  21. Internet Only 'partly Free' In India: Report

No access to pornography in cyber cafes, declare new rules Source NEW DELHI: Fresh guidelines, which are part of Information Technology (guidelines for cyber cafe) Rules 2011, will require cyber cafe owners to "tell users" not to surf websites that contain "pornographic or obscene material". Experts termed the rule arbitrary, saying that watching pornography is not an offence in India. According to the rules notified on April 11, all cyber cafes in the country will have to register with an "agency as notified" by the government. While some of the guidelines deal with the security threat posed by "anonymous internet users", most aim to make sure that people don't use cyber cafés to access pornographic material. Pawan Duggal, a lawyer who specializes in IT laws, said the new guidelines were arbitrary. "Watching pornography is not illegal in India," he said. "It's absurd to ask cyber café owners to tell their customers not to access pornographic material even as law allows individuals to access adult websites unless it's not child pornography. The new rules require a second look." The new rules suggest café owners install filtering software and keep a log of all websites accessed by customers for at least one year. Café owners have also been asked not to build a cabin/cubicle with a height of more than four and half feet. In a cyber café where there are no cubicles, "owners will have to place computers with the screens facing outward" or towards open space. The move is aimed at reducing privacy a cyber café user can get. Duggal said if implemented earnestly, the new rules will put most of cyber café owners out of business. Internet activists termed the guidelines "unconstitutional". Pranesh Prakash, a programme manager with Centre of Internet and Society, said the rules will violate privacy and will hamper internet users' ability to freely express themselves. The new rules make it mandatory for user to carry an identity card. Cyber café owners have been asked to give user logs to the "registration agency" every month as well keep these records along with the log of websites accessed at the cyber café safe for a period of one year. A few café owners said that technically, it would be a daunting task to keep a record of every website accessed using their computers for a year. While minors, if carrying identity cards have been permitted to use computers in a cyber café, they won't be allowed inside cubicles if not accompanied by guardians or parents. There is also provision of photographing cyber café users using a webcam or other device. The photographs will have to be authenticated by the user. Prakash said that photographing users raises serious privacy questions, especially in the case of children.
