  2. Solar Powered Gsm Tower For Indian Villages Low Cost,Wi-Fi,GSM,Can Be Used by ISP's Also VNL has created a low cost mobile and GSM tower which enables telecom operators and ISPs to cost effectively launch services in rural areas. VNL's towers, called WorldGSM, work entirely on solar energy. This translates to zero operating cost. Do you frequently travel to the villages? If you do, here's some good news. Connectivity in rural areas is expected to improve with Haryana-based telecom solutions company Vihaan Networks Limited's (VNL) new mobile tower, which is cheap and requires no maintenance. Vihang Networks Website http://www.vnl.in/ Called WorldGSM, VNL's tower provides connectivity for voice and wireless broadband as well. According to global consultancy group Deloitte, rural India is expected to fuel the growth in mobile phone services over the next four years as cell phones become a vital tool in the government's financial inclusion programme. However, current mobile towers are powered by diesel generators, which cost as much as Rs 50,000 per month to maintain. As operating cost of telecom in rural regions far exceeds revenue, network providers lack incentive to offer services in these areas. VNL was the recipient of GSMA's 2010 Green Mobile - Best Green Programme Product or Initiative award for inventing mobile base stations fueled by renewable energy. These towers, called WorldGSM, are small, use solar energy, and are powerful. VNL's towers not only reduce installation cost and time, and maintenance cost; they also ensure zero operating cost, making rural networks profitable. WorldGSM mobile towers also create low cost Wifi networks. Each tower installed in a rural area can work as a Wifi hotspot effective over a 500 m radius. Five or six similar towers create a continuous Wifi zone stretching over about 6 km. This enables the network operator to offer Wifi and GSM connectivity to clusters of villages without having to lay cables. Rajiv Mehrotra, the founder and chief executive officer of VNL, said, "Using our technology, operators can create a viable business model to operate GSM and broadband networks in rural areas." He added, "95 per cent of tehsils in our country are connected by fiber channel (wired broadband connection). Using our technology, almost the entire country can be provided broadband without the need to lay more cables." Most villages have an area of less than 200 meter radius, which means that WorldGSM will enable even bigger villages to be connected without the need to install another tower. VNL showcased its technology to a select group of journalists. They took us to Bhiwandi tehsil in Rajasthan, where they have setup a trial WorldGSM network. Rajiv said that WorldGSM towers cost as little as Rs 8 lakh, which includes solar panels, batteries, backhaul, GSM antennae and Wifi solution. The tower can be installed in two hours on roof tops without a foundation having to be laid. It has no operation costs either. WorldGSM towers do not require air-conditioning as there are no moving parts in the setup; because there is no air conditioner, there is no need for a generator either. Solar panels, on which VNL's towers operate, also require only dusting once or twice a week, which can be done by the person on whose premise the tower is installed. These cell towers offer only 2.5G network. Rajiv said, "Villages right now need to be connected first and 3G is not the requirement. We have included Wifi in our solution as there are low cost devices which work on this network. Wifi is cheaper too as it operators don't need to pay . VNL's WorldGSM solution is being deployed in Africa, Asia and other developing regions. The company is actively looking for buyers in India and is doing trials with BSNL. WorldGSM can certainly make a difference in how villages are connected. Every one is gunning to go rural as there is a vast and untapped market there, but current technology is too expensive for the business to be viable". We believe this technology can not only take broadband to rural areas but also fuel a lot of local enterprise as it enables the setup of micro networks by local entrepreneurs. Source:Mobile Indian

Acer to launch Honeycomb tablets in India this March Acer India today said the company will be launching five Android tablets in the country by March. These tablets will feature different display sizes varying from 4.8 inches to 10 inches. However, Acer showed off only three tablets at the launch event last year in New York. So we presume that two of these tablets will have a WiFi and a 3G version each, whereas the smaller tablet (with a display size of 4.8 inches) will only have a single 3G version. Company also added that all of them will be running on Honeycomb, reported Times of India. "Tablets are doing well in India. By December 2011, when the associated services like 3G stabilise, we expect the overall sales of tablets in India to reach the figure of 6,000-8,000 per month," said S Rajendran, chief marketing officer of Acer India. He also ducked out the price of 7 inch Acer tablet, which will be sold for around Rs 24,000. Acer is also expected to launch 4-5 Android phones in the second half of the year in India. 16. Customers Find it Hard To Port To Other Networks Even As Telcos Enter Slanging Match 25 JAN, 2011 Economic Times NEW DELHI: Mobile number portability got off to a rocky start as customers complained they were unable to swap service providers and telcos accused rivals unfairly hanging on to top clients. Customers queuing up to switch operators without a change in cellphone numbers were told "servers were down" or there were technical glitches that prevented quick action on their request to desert their existing service provider. Airtel customer SK Ghosh has been sending a text message for two days only to get a terse reply: "invalid entry". ET spoke to a cross-section of customers across the country. All of them faced similar hurdles. The response from another service provider for subscriber in West Bengal was "no default configured". Vodafone Essar , which runs a countrywide network, said customer helplines were awash with complaints from angry subscribers of rival networks complaining their requests to make a switch fell on deaf ears. The telco plans to take up the issue with sector regulator Trai. "We are getting complaints from customers who want to port in to us that they are not getting the unique porting codes from their existing service providers or there is a delay in the process. It is not appropriate to name any specific operator," Samaresh Parida, Vodafone Essar's director (strategy) told ET. Reliance Communications , the country's second largest telco by customers, also said its rivals were not processing requests to switch to the Anil-Ambani promoted company. "I can confirm that RCom helplines have received umpteen complaints from (customers of rival networks) that their SMS requests were not being accepted by their present service providers. Most complaints emanated from Vodafone, Airtel and some Idea Cellular customers in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka who been wanting to port into RCom," said RCom's president (marketing) for wireless business, Mahesh Prasad. The CEO of Bharti Airtel , India's largest telco by both customers and revenues, Sanjay Kapoor, said his company was not blocking customers' request to switch to rivals. "There may be some technical issues, but we should not jump to conclusions, and allow the system to stablise," he said. Kapoor said Airtel would gain the most by the introduction of MNP. "Our revenue market share is far higher than our customer market share, an indicator of the quality of our subscribers. We have a credible track record for services and an enviable reach in terms of our networks and MNP will therefore enable us to get more customers," he said. He said eventually, a customer would be able to make a switch. "If a subscriber does not get a response, he will resend the SMS. It is not possible for any telco to block the process," Kapoor added. According to Rajan Mathews, director general of The Cellular Operators Association of India, the body representing all GSM telcos, technical glitches were bound to crop up in the first weeks especially considering that scale of the project. "No country with over 700 million cellphone customers and 14 operators has ever attempted such a project. Given the complexity involved, I can categorically state that there is no malicious intent by any operator to stall or delay porting requests. Besides, any telco that has complaints can always approach regulator Trai," he added.

  18. Motorola Atrix 4G-The Monster

Motorola Atrix 4G Units arriving at Best Buy February 13th? Keyboard Dock to Cost $150 A meeting went down over the weekend at Best Buy, and a big point of discussion was the impending launch of the Motorola Atrix 4G on AT&T. While little solid info came to light concerning the final release strategy for the new 4G HSPA+ handset, a few details were gleaned. The biggest of which is that the Atrix will be arriving in Best Buy's warehouses right around February 13th, though the actual release date is unknown. Considering that Best Buy employees are already beginning training, we'd imagine the device will be on shelves not too far after the 13th. Another bit of information gleaned froim the meetings concerns the Atrix's keyboard dock. The accessory that will transform the phone into a [almost] full-fledged netbook is said to retail for $150. That seems a fair price, if not $25-$50 too expensive for a piece of hardware consisting of a screen, keyboard, and extended battery alone. All other internals and software are beamed directly in from the Atrix itself. But for $150, we'll take it. The story is currently developing over at Android Forums.
