'Buy & tell' gets a fillip in the online world NEW DELHI: Status has acquired a new meaning. It is no longer the social standing you are talking about but your current state of mind or the latest acquisition you have made. Marketers are loving the free publicity as consumers go ga-ga about their new car, latest phone or a trendy accessory on social media—Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, blogs, et al. "Most often what we buy is for others, and not for ourselves," says brand guru Harish Bijoor, citing social psychologist Leon Festinger's 'Theory of Cognitive Dissonance' which explicitly reasons this behaviour. The theory, in a nutshell, states that one would always like to maintain a certain consistency between one's beliefs and actions. So when you buy something, you crave for a positive feedback to reaffirm that you made a right choice. Usually there is a tendency among people to exhibit such behaviour among their core peer group and family as there is a need to belong to the group. But this behaviour has increased over the last few years with product launches becoming more publicly explicit, a bigger brand line up on the shelf, and a steady rise in incomes. Moreover, with more overt modes to express—blogs, networking sites and text messages, the canvas of communication has become more colourful. "It's about the kick one gets in sharing one's excitement with a large audience," says Ashish Alwar, a marketing executive in Delhi who did not want his company to be named. "On my Facebook account, for instance, through a single post I was able to tell 500 'friends' about the new Volkswagen Vento I acquired the other day. Most responded with congratulatory messages." Psychologists disagree. They call it a feeling of 'upmanship' stemming from one's low self-image. "Most people don't have a positive self-image. They are governed by what others think of them and these thoughts are manifested through such expressions," says senior consultant psychiatrist Dr Sanjay Chugh. It is this lot which seeks acceptance on a public platform. The 'buy-and-tell' behaviour is also more visible in certain product categories as compared to the rest. Professor Abraham Koshy, marketing professor at IIM Ahmedabad outlines it this way: "Products such as watches, garments, perfumes, jewellery and automobiles are self-expressive products where people have a tendency to talk more about their purchases. Then there is the social networking medium through which people want to show their understanding of the environment by telling others about it." Social media helps in creating enough curiosity among people to go ahead and purchase what their friends bought. Of course, people express on such mediums for reasons other than just generating awareness! "The insecurity makes people flaunt what they buy and get many followers in the process. It starts with peer groups, moves on to elders and can even go down to youngsters," adds Bijoor. The 'tell-all tales' also depend on how much a person is involved in the purchase decision and their interest level in that specific product. "Areas where one would spend more of their time and energy like a phone, spa, gym or purchasing shoes will be discussed more. People discuss things that they feel strongly about and in which they have been personally involved. Also a lot of buzz is generated through the networking sites so that helps," asserts Tarun Sharma, country head of Swiss watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre. In fact, this type of telling behaviour comes more to the fore in the case of high-value luxury products. Source:Economic Times

Aids Awareness Day Today - Let Me Ans Ur Querries And Doubts - Scientifically
rajanmehta replied to Genius's topic in The Lounge
City doctor makes breakthrough in fight against aids Parel scientist finds a way to block the virus from spreading in cases of sexual transmission In the global battle against the spread of HIV/AIDS, a major victory has been scored in a rather non-descript lab in a narrow, crowded lane of central Mumbai. Dr A H Bandivdekar, senior scientist and deputy director of the National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health (NIRH), has developed a compound that blocks the virus from growing and multiplying inside a woman's body in cases where it has been sexually transmitted. The path-breaking discovery, almost certain to shake up the anti-HIV/AIDS research across the world, can take the risk of HIV infection out of the lives of commercial sexworkers, thus putting a brake on its alarming proliferation. It can also help women married to HIV+ve men lead a normal life. However, entering Dr Bandivdekar's third-floor office-cum-lab at NIRH's Parel facility on Saturday afternoon, one did not get any sense of history being made. Dressed in a faded polo shirt and loose-fitting khakis paired with floaters, he treated with utter contempt any questions on how soon his discovery could be made commercially available. He'd rather, he said, focus on the ongoing in-vitro trials. "Commercial availability of this anti-dote is not my focus...it's not even my lookout," he said. But Dr Bandivdekar is already the talk of the small anti-AIDS research community. On Friday, he made a presentation in Panaji in Goa to a "very appreciative set of scientists" from across the world. His research, in its various stages, has already been published in three annual reports of the Indian Council of Medical Research. What the 'Bandivdekar compound' (he will not discuss its composition till the patent is cleared) does is it tames Mannose Receptor, a protein found in women's vaginal epithelial cells that binds with the virus and helps it grow and invade others parts of the body. When the Mannose Receptor is controlled at a certain level or is eliminated completely, the HIV virus, in absence of a carrier, is rendered ineffectual. Dr A H Bandivdekar, senior scientist and deputy director of the National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health (NIRH) The beginning Till 2003, when Dr Bandivdekar was in very initial stages of his research, the only protein that was known to bind with HIV and make it grow and multiply was CD4, found in abundance in blood cells. But that related to HIV transmission through blood. There was very little clarity on sexually transmitted HIV. His research first showed that the male sperm is CD4 negative. He later found that the vaginal epithelial cells too were CD4 negative. Now, a big question loomed - if CD4 acts as a carrier when HIV enters a human body through blood, which protein plays the role of CD4 when HIV is sexually transmitted? The answer, that came to Dr Bandivdekar after many years of research and experiments was - Mannose Receptor. And then began the race to find an anti-dote. "The compound is ready now. We have no doubts about its efficacy. Clinical trials will begin this year in the US, when we will use it on rhesus monkeys," he said. During his research, Dr Bandivdekar looked at 40 sexually active, discordant couples (HIV+ve males and HIV-ve women) and found that very low percentage of vaginal epithelial cells in these women had Mannose Receptor. "Since Mannose Receptor is responsible for carrying the virus beyond the vagina and then letting it multiply, these women have been free of HIV even after regular, unprotected sexual contact with their husbands," he said. A 40-year-old TV actor, who was part of this study, tested positive in 2004. He was married and had a 10-year-old son then. However, to his relief, tests showed his wife and son both were free of HIV. It was later revealed that less than 10 per cent of his wife's vaginal epithelial cells had Mannose Receptor. "Though I tested positive, the knowledge that my wife and son were safe gave me strength. The news gave me confidence to fight this disease, now I am doing well with my family's support," he said. Mixed reaction Within the scientific and medical community, there is mixed reaction to Bandivdekar's discovery. One of the major concern is HIV's propensity to mutate. "There are lots of other factors involved in the non-transmission of HIV from one partner to the other. In HIV, there are three sub types - A, B and C. In discordant couples, we have found type C virus not getting transmitted to the partner. However, we need more detailed studies," said Dr Preeti Mehta, head of microbiology, KEM Hospital. "Of course these findings give us new hope, it will take our research to another level. But it's too early for us to let our guard down. In counselling, we still ask discordant couples to use protection when having sex. The virus mutates very fast and that is a constant worry," said Dr Alka Deshpande, head of Anti-Retroviral Therapy at JJ Hospital. Dr Amita Joshi, head of microbiology at JJ, offered a similar reaction. "It will be difficult to be able to comment on this research at this stage. This is quite interesting, but I need to go through details," she said. Source:Mumbai Mirror -

Very True... Karthik's suggestion for a Pet is Very Good...A child understands many emotions of Selflessness, Compassion, Loyalty, Unconditional Love, Caring and Mercy for a world beyond humans through a Pet in maturing years... What differentiates today's Kid from our generation is that they have no time to Read Good Print Books today because of the so called connected world of Chats, Buzz, Facebook and above all Google search...Most of the social networking activities a child does now a days has One Day Value...No Intellectual Depth OR acquiring Real Knowledge... In that sense, Gifting a Child something which will motivate him to read Good OLD physical print books can work wonders for overall mental development... A Good Poetry book...So he knows the expression of varied emotions... A Good Science book...So he knows answers to unknowns and curiousity is aroused... A Good History book...So real histroy is known...And not from 2-3 line opinionated, ill-informed comments online And Thousand other things...Basically teaching him How to Fish rather than Gifting a Fish Good reading habit is the best thing for Child's overall mental development, open up his mind, explore the possibilities... Don't Know if you are a Gujarati, Still Two Suggestions... 1. Get him "SAFARI" Monthly Science Magazine Subscription...English Version also available...The Best...Reading since last 30 years... 2. R.R. Sheth & Co. Publishers in Mumbai has Two Schemes for Books, #Pay Rs 1,000 One Time and Get Rs 200 worth of books free Every Year Life Long #Pay Rs 5,000 One Time and Get Rs 1,000 worth of books free Every Year Life Long Though they are primarily into Gujarati Publishing, Good selection of English books also available...

Nothing to worry about AMD. I know many people have not used it before because of Intel Hype..But there is a good first time for everything.. AMD gives best Price-Performance Ratio, More features and Value For Money...For Intel You generally Pay More for the same or less features due to Brand Value perception.. You can see the proof for yourself between the Intel Model you are liking and AMD model i am suggesting... Go through this thread itself from beginning and read review of Toshiba AMD Laptop..Sound Quality point is also answered... I would go for Toshiba Satellite L640-M4310 at Rs 30,990 (Price will be even less now) compared to L640-M4010 for following additional features.. -3GB RAM -ATI 512MB Dedicated Graphic Card -Windows 7 Home Premium Preinstalled And all models have DVD Multi Drive. They may not write in the spec but usually all recent optical drives has DVD Re Writable Support.

Please suggest a Portable Hard Disk Drive
rajanmehta replied to FEVIN-RAJ's topic in General Technical Discussion
Most of the portable HDD has USB 2.0. This is the limiting factor for interface..Even if the HDD is capable of higher speeds, this will limit data transfer speed beyond a point and more or less offers same speeds between various brands at a Practical level.. For Portable HDD Spec... -Should select 7200 RPM Drive -Should select Drive with more Cache RAM... E-Sata and USB 3.0 are very fast interfaces compared to USB 2.0 and more than doubles the writing speed. For this to work, -The PC needs to have USB 3.0/E-Sata Port. -If the PC does not have USB 3.0, there are USB 3.0 PCI Express Cards available. -If the PC does not have E-Sata Port but has normal SATA port, there are SATA to E-Sata brackets available. Western Digital has My Passport Essential Series Portable With USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. 500GB for Rs 3,550 Seagate FreeAgent Go Flex Series has different approach. Comes with USB 2.0 but you can buy separate Go Flex Connectors to make it either Firewire, USB 3.0+PCMCIA Express, E-SATA or USB 3.0. The connectors cost approx Rs 1,800 each, USB 3.0+PCMCIA Express Cost Rs 4,300. Basic Price of Seagate Freeagent Go Flex USB 2.0 without the connectors...for 500GB Rs 3,050. And no point in going for 320GB... -
