  6. BlackBerry seeks up to 2-yrs to offer interception solution NEW DELHI: Blackberry has asked for 18-24 months to provide a complete solution for interception of its Enterprise Mail, but with a condition that its services would not be banned, a guarantee that the government declined to give. "Research in Motion (RIM), maker of BlackBerry, can provide the infrastructure in India for BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) services in a time frame of 18-24 months provided it is confirmed that the services will not be banned in India during the period," the Canada-based company said at a meeting with the Department of Telecom (DoT). The company was earlier given time till January 31, 2011, to provide solution for Lawful Interception of contents sent or received on the device. The DoT has, however, refrained from giving any guarantee to RIM officials that their services would not be banned in case they fail to provide solution. The government said creating RIM infrastructure for BES services in India will not only enhance the possibility of accepting such service from security point of view but that may also be of the commercial interest of the company. Therefore, RIM should seriously consider to create infrastructure for BES in India and condense the implementation time to a much shorter time frame to create such an infrastructure, the DoT officials said during the meeting. The company informed the government that interception and monitoring in readable format is possible at the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) located at the enterprise, which is availing enterprise e-mail services through the phone platform. The company added that RIM infrastructure at Canada and England is a mere router and it does not store content, its only route the content to the desired destination. To the question of installing the server for BES services in India, RIM said, "The company should not be singled out and if all companies offering such services are asked to provide servers in India then RIM will follow the instruction issued by the government." Meanwhile, the Canadian firm had also offered lawful interception in its security architecture through cloud computing its BlackBerry to BlackBerry Message (BBM) services from Indian operators. Cloud computing is Internet-based service, whereby shared servers provide software and data to computers and other devices on demand. RIM infrastructure is ready to receive and process through the cloud computing-based system, lawfully intercepted BlackBerry Messenger data from Indian service providers, the Canada-based firm had said. 7. Many technologies that became popular among the masses in the past were later embraced by corporates. A few examples--public Instant Messengers, social networking sites, CDs and DVDs, flash drives, web apps, and the list goes on. Now, another technology has reached that tipping point, and we're bound to see it take the corporate world by storm in the coming year-tablets. These devices had actually failed to really take off in their earlier avatar as tablet PCs. But now, they're bound to make a grand comeback in the corporate world, and here's why we believe so. Users are comfortable using multi-touch, the main interface for tablets Touch screen based tablet PCs have been around for ages, but they simply didn't succeed in the market. The key reason for this is that their primary interface remained the touchpad (or trackpad) and keyboard, with touchscreen functionality being just another interface. There weren't enough killer applications available to leverage the touch screen capability, so users stuck to using the mouse and keyboard. They didn't have enough reason to switch. But Apple's iPad introduced multi-touch as the primary interface, so users had no option but to use it. It had already set the base for users by introducing multi-touch in its iPhone and iPod products, so a huge base of users were already comfortable using the technology. That's why it wasn't surprising that the iPad sold millions of units within months of being launched, because users were already comfortable using a multi-touch interface. Now that more vendors are introducing tablets with multi-touch interface, they're bound to succeed. More multi-touch ready apps Multi-touch capability alone will not make tablets popular. We've had multi-touch support in various operating systems for ages. What's also needed are killer applications that will leverage the capability. That was missing for quite some time. So the good news is that vendors have now become aware and are building platforms and SDKs that will leverage the capability of multi-touch from ground-up. iPad's iOS for instance, was built to use multi-touch, and today has around 200,000+ applications available for it, which can be downloaded for from Apple's online store. Google's Android OS for instance, has native support for multi-touch, making it easy for developers to build apps around it. NEC recently announced its own Android based tablet, squarely aimed at the corporate users. It's meant to be used by retail stores and warehouses as an e-shop terminal or a logistics terminal for stock taking, etc. More Apps, thanks to the cloud Lots of people have called this as the year of the cloud, and not without good reason. Every major vendor has their finger in the cloud pie, and is providing their bouquet of applications over the cloud. Most enterprise apps are becoming web-aware, meaning they can be easily accessible through a web-browser. There are lots of private players who're developing cloud based applications. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc are providing cloud computing development platforms and have attracted developers in masses to build apps on their platforms. While most devices will benefit from apps moving to the cloud, the biggest benefit will go to mobile devices, because people want to be able to access their applications on the move. In the process, the effect will rub off on tablets as well. An interesting use for tablets can be for application and desktop streaming. So organizations that virtualize their desktops could stream it to tablet users, thereby giving those users the flexibility to access from anywhere. More bandwidth, thanks to 3G Yes, we should hopefully see 3G finally become a reality next year, with most major telecom vendors having made their announcements this year. 3G will give a much needed shot in the arm to most mobile devices, which till now, were starving for bandwidth. It will allow more applications to be used when on the move. Many tablets that are entering the market are 3G ready, so they will certainly benefit from this technology. So as more applications move to the cloud, it will be a boon for tablets because they'll be able to access those apps over 3G. The other connectivity interfaces like WiFi and networking are already present in tablets, but 3G will allow working from anywhere. Initially, 3G might be very expensive for the average consumer, so it could be embraced by corporates first. More compact and portable, thanks to the slate design Have you ever tried using your laptop when you're traveling economy class on a flight? It's a fight because there's not enough space to open the keyboard and work. And if the person sitting in the seat in front of you reclines his/her seat, then you've had it! Tablets, thanks to their slate design can be used anywhere because the person would hold the device with one hand, and use it with the other. Moreover, most tablets that have been launched in the market have their Operating Systems optimized for the underlying hardware. This allows them to be used for running multimedia applications (audio, video, etc). Plus, it allows for longer battery backups (the iPad for instance can last up to 10 hours). So you can use it for a prolonged period of time when on the move. Business users would therefore find tablets more very convenient to use while on the move (especially on a flight!). So as we have it, the tablets have already been popularized by the iPad globally, so it's only a matter of time before it takes off in India as well. So hopefully next year, it will become a powerful addition to an organization's fleet of laptops and smartphones in the coming year. Source PC Quest
  8. India has the second highest penetration of tablet PCs globally, says Accenture study A new Accenture study predicts that 10 percent of Indian respondents plan to purchase a tablet PC in 2011 January 05, 2011 A new Accenture survey predicts that consumer purchase rates for personal computers and mobile phones (excluding smartphones) will decline by 39 percent and 56 percent this year compared to last year, respectively. By contrast, buying rates of 3DTVs (three-dimensional TVs) are expected to rise 500 percent; tablet computers 160 percent; ebook readers 133 percent; and smartphones 26 percent. The annual survey focused on usage and spending on 19 different consumer electronics technologies among more than 8,000 consumers in eight countries in both emerging markets and developed economies: Brazil, China, India, Russia, France, Germany, Japan and the United States. The Accenture survey says that the urban consumers in Brazil, Russia, India and China (the BRIC markets) have leapfrogged the average mature market consumer in their use of technology. They have a greater appetite for consumer technology from many measures, including the devices they own, their purchase plans and their use of applications. The survey predicts several insightful trends pertaining to India. Some of these include: • A full 84 percent of Indian respondents say they will pay a premium for enhanced smartphone capabilities. That translates into roughly 148 million consumers. • In India, emailing on a PC dropped from 86 to 67 percent year-over-year while emailing by phone grew from 19 to 34 percent • In India, 10 percent of respondents own a tablet PC. Future growth for tablet PCs in India also looks strong -- 10 percent of Indian respondents plan to purchase a tablet PC in 2011 • India's participation in social networking has declined. In 2010, 57 percent connected at least weekly, and for our 2011 study that number has fallen to 42 percent • In India, searching the Web for information has dropped from 61 percent of consumers doing it weekly to 47 percent • Smartphones are expected to have the second-highest purchase rate among consumer electronics in 2011. The smartphone is predicted to be the most- purchased device in India and Russia Source:InformationWeek

  10. Need Suggestion For GSM 3G Handset

^^ ^^ Agreed. I won't go personally for Bada OS. But for someone who is not so tech savvy (also not looking for android) and ultimately not going to utilize even 10-20% of the OS features (A Survey in UK says Smartphone Users use only 20% of the features...Lol...In India the % may be even less), Bada OS is a good choice as Samsung is keeping differential reduced pricing on Bada hansets to promote it. For this category of people, Bada would be better to get excellent hardware at very competitive price and a better full featured OS than Symbian. See Samsung Wave II S8530 at Rs 17,999, 1Ghz Arm Cortex and all...Matches or even better hardware than Galaxy S Android in some respect but nearly 9-10K less in price. Even Samsung Wave 575 S5753 at Rs 8,599 and Samsung Wave 723 S7233 at Rs 12,499 has very good hardware at the price.

  13. NEW DELHI: Next time you go to a bank ATM, be ready to re-enter your PIN afresh for every transaction you wish to conduct, such as money withdrawal, balance enquiry and checking account details. In order to check misuse of ATM cards by unauthorised people, RBI has asked banks to allow only one transaction at ATM machines for one entry of PIN (Personal Identification Number which acts like a password for ATM transactions). The transactions that a bank customer can conduct through the ATMs (Automated Teller Machines), by inserting or swiping the card and entering the PIN, include withdrawal of money, deposits, fund transfer, bill payments, checking account details etc. Previously, customers were allowed to conduct multiple transactions through the ATM by punching in their PIN only once in a single session. However, the practice was vulnerable to misuse by unauthorised people, especially in case authorised customers forgot to collect their ATM card after conducting the transaction. There have also been cases when some people tamper with the ATM machines in a way that a customer cannot collect the ATM card after conducting the transaction. Once the customer moves out of the ATM machine thinking that the withheld card needed to be collected from the bank, the fraudster goes into the ATM and withdraws money as previous session remains active with the PIN already punched in. Having received several complaints about the vulnerabilities of the existing practice, RBI has asked the banks to make changes in their systems to allow only one transaction for every entry of the PIN. Although, RBI had asked all banks to follow these guidelines with effect from January 1, 2011, some of the banks are still in the process of updating their systems with the required changes. In the meantime, the banks have started communicating to their customers about the changes in the way ATM transactions are conducted. In one such circular to its customers, private sector bank HDFC Bank said: "As per RBI guidelines, you will need to re-enter your ATM PIN for every additional ATM transaction in a single session, with effect from 1st January, 2011". "Please ensure you enter the correct ATM PIN for every transaction to avoid any inconvenience," the bank said. ATMs have become a preferred mode of banking transactions for both customers and banks, due to the convenience and cost-saving factors. The volume of ATM transactions increased from 17,797 lakh aggregating to Rs 4,38,151 crore during 2007-08 to 23,530 lakh aggregating to Rs 6,16,456 crore during 2008-09, as per RBI. ASUS Announces Eee Pad Slider, Transformer Both Tablets will run Android 3.0 powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 processor It was predicted that this year would be the year of the tablets and Asus has kicked of 2011 in style with their latest Eee Pad announcement. The two tablets known as Slider and Transformer will be available sometime in April and May and will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor running Google Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). The Transformer will cost somewhere between $400 (Rs. 18,179) and $700 (Rs..31,813) and the Slider will range between $500 (Rs. 22,724) and $800 (Rs. 36,538). Both feature a screen size of 10.1" and sport an IPS panel like the iPad, but a higher HD resolution of 1280x800. For connectivity, you have mini-HDMI to hook up to your HDTV, a miniUSB and a microSD card slot for expansion. Both tablets pack in dual cameras -a 1.2MP front facing camera and a 5MP rear camera with LED flash. The tablet alone would weigh around 2.2pounds and is about 0.5" thick. Both tablets will have an option of 512MB and 1GB of internal memory and storage capacities of 16GB/32GB internal flash memory (the Transformer will also get a 64GB flash memory option) along with the option of expanding it further through the microSD card slot. It will also have Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR (no Bluetooth 3.0), WiFi b/g/n, USB 2.0. Now the major difference between the two is the keyboard. The Eee Pad Slider will come with a sliding chiclet keyboard, so if you are going to be typing a lot and don't want to get the case/keyboard combo, ASUS has already taken care of that for you. The tablet pops open and rests on a hinge giving you a comfortable angle to type on. The Eee Pad Transformer on the other hand is for people who would like the keyboard as an option and don't want to lug around that extra bulk. Since the keyboard doesn't have to be carried around, it's slightly bigger with a trackpad and also packs in a battery pack for extended battery life. Together the Transformer is said to last 16hrs on a single charge and the tablet by itself should last for 8hrs. Source:Techtree

  20. NEW DELHI: The Intelligence Bureau wants internet service providers, or ISPs, to keep a record of all online activities of customers for a minimum of six months, a move that can add to operational costs for companies and pose privacy concerns. IB, in a communication to the department of telecom, or DoT , has sought that addresses of websites visited with date and time and financial transactions of all customers be stored by internet operators for six months. If implemented, it may pose a threat to online privacy as internet service providers such as Bharti Airtel , Reliance Communications , BSNL and MTNL will now become custodians of citizens' online records. Currently, mobile phone companies and internet service providers do not keep online logs that track the web usage pattern of their customers. They selectively monitor online activities of only those customers as required by intelligence and security agencies, explained an executive with a telecom company. "At present, we only keep a log of all our customers' Internet Protocol address, which is the digital address of a customer's internet connection. We are not aware of the IB proposal, but such a move will pose huge logistical challenge for ISPs and increase costs," said Rajesh Chharia, president of the Internet Service Providers' Association of India. The Intelligence Bureau communication to DoT, which was reviewed by ET, says its demands are in line with the security and monitoring provisions that already exist for mobile and landline calls. Mobile phone companies are mandated to maintain call logs for all their customers for a minimum of six months. It added that both internet and mobile telephony permits contain several clauses that state companies offering access to the world wide web are obliged to provide tracking facilities to authorised government officials, including the police, Customs, excise and intelligence department when such information is required to detect crimes, or in the interest of national security. But, the telecom ministry, in an internal note, is of the view that the inter-ministerial group currently looking into monitoring of internet services and networks in the country must take a final call on this issue. In a related development, IB has asked the telecom and IT departments to work with mobile phone companies and the National Informatics Centre to put in place a system that can uniquely identify any person using the internet across the country. The project aims to develop a technology platform where users will have to mandatorily submit some form of an online identification or password to access the internet every time they go online, irrespective of the service provider. NIC is involved in active promotion and implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) solutions in the government and spearheads the centre's e-governance drive. The IB communication also asks the departments of telecom and IT to expedite the creation of a national internet registry while adding that this facility would be a major facilitator for creating the technological platform to uniquely identify any person using the internet in India. Most nations have a national internet registry that coordinates all IP address allocations and other internet resource management functions at the national level. The telecom ministry is also of the view that the IB proposal can be examined and implemented only after India's indigenously-built Centralised Monitoring System (CMS), which can track all communication traffic—wireless and fixed line, satellite, internet, e-mails and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) calls—and gather intelligence inputs, becomes functional. The centralised system, modeled on similar set-ups in several Western countries, aims to be a one-stop solution as against the current practice of running several decentralised monitoring agencies under various ministries, where each one has contrasting processing systems, technology platforms and clearance levels. Planning for CMS , which was aimed at strengthening the country's internal security apparatus, began in 2007, but the project was put on a fast track after the Mumbai attacks, when terrorists received orders via VoIP (internet telephony). 21. I have a suggestion for our Administrator Arun. If you notice, many people come here for small problem resolutions and open separate threads for that in respective forums. Most of this people come here just for the resolution of their problems, many just joins and the first post invariably is for resolving some problem. While we all are here to help everyone, the problem is that over a period of time all such threads clutter the respective forums with the effect that useful threads go into background and everytime we are reinventing the wheel for similar problems. And again when some newbie has a problem, he wont bother to search around but will again open a fresh thread and this vicious cycle goes around afresh. And if one notices deeply most of this people will not post anything meaningful or contribute here once the anwsers to their problems are posted by someone and will resurface again only when there is a problem. In this background, isn't it a good idea to develop common help threads topicwise and merge all help requests when someone opens a new thread to the respective help thread. Few examples of Such Common Thread which can be created are, -Reliance Netconnect Help Clinic -Android Mobiles Help Clinic -Reliance Prepaid Issues -Using Imported Mobiles on Indian CDMA Networks Help Clinic I have just put up some illustrative threads in hurry. If admins and smart members puts up their effort together, most of the problem thead topics can be covered in about 10 threads. Over a period of time, this threads will contain good troubleshooting information at one place which one can refer before posting a new thread. And information in one thread can be of great help. Admin, Moderators and Members comments welcome.
  22. 3G services can go ahead while monitoring is put in place: PC NEW DELHI: In a move that could see GenNext mobile services including video calls being available to customers, the government today said telecom operators can roll out 3G telephony while working on the modalities to provide monitoring facilities to the security agencies. Responding to questions at his monthly press conference called for giving the report of Home Ministry for December, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said the Department of Telecom and his ministry were working together in putting in place some rules and norms for intercepting or monitoring of 3G transactions in the interest of national security. "We are putting place certain mechanisms to monitor and intercept 3G services where it become necessary on the grounds of national security. "The idea is not to interrupt or delay the 3G services. The idea is to allow 3G services to go forward even while monitoring mechanisms are put in place," Chidambaram said. "So no one need to fear that the 3G services will be interrupted or delayed," he added. Earlier, DoT had issued notices to a few telecom operators asking them to stop the GenNext mobile services -- 3G -- which includes video calling facility -- asking them to put on hold the new services till they adhered to security norms for its legal interception. The DoT and central security agencies had convened a meeting of industry officials in December 20 last year and asked them to stop roll-out of 3G services till they demonstrate interception facility. 3G mobile services mainly include voice call, video calls and data services. In the data services, operators are claiming to offer high-speed internet service and required to offer monitoring facility. The DoT had sent a letter to both TTSL and RCom asking them not to launch 3G services on commercial basis till they demonstrate lawful interception facilities. Source:Economic Times
