The handsets 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen HVGA portrait display supports 320x480 pixel resolution. Shutterbugs can make the best of the 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with dual-LED flash which will also record HD videos. For geo-tagging, you can use the onboard GPS or assisted GPS with Google Maps. The Droid Pro will sport Google Maps app with Navigation, Google Latitude, Street View and eCompass features - quite useful when you're on the move. However, device and SD card encryption will be available by early 2011. Motorola will offer 8GB internal storage along with 8GB SD card that will be bundled with the phone. The Droid Pro offers Wi-Fi connectivity with DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) support. Opera has just released the Opera Mobile browser on the Android Market. Until now if you wanted Opera on your Android handset then you would have had to settle for the Opera Mini, which is great for low powered handsets, but too much of a compromise on powerful smartphones. Opera Mobile is a full-fledged browser that you can use if for some reason you have a problem with the built-in Android browser. The browser looks exactly like other Opera Mobile browsers. The features and options are also the same as before except for one addition; you can now specify the behavior of the text wrap mode. You can now make it work only when you tap on the display to zoom and not if you pinch to zoom. Or you can have it work in both situations or disable it completely. Pinch to zoom is supported in Opera Mobile now, which wasn't the case with Opera Mobile. In Opera Mini you can pinch to zoom but it would only zoom to a preset level and there was no fine control over the amount of zoom you want to dial in. Opera Mobile is a very fast browser. When tested on a Garmin-Asus A10 running Android 2.1, Opera Mobile was consistently faster than the built-in browser. However, when we tried to do the same on an HTC Desire running Android 2.2, the speeds were on par with those of the built-in browser with Flash disabled. When you enable Opera Turbo then page loading speed increases even further and becomes almost twice as fast, although the image quality goes for a toss. Scrolling was super smooth on Opera Mobile. However, there is still one minor issue with it; the browser does not keep the focus on the text when you scroll. On the Mobile Safari, for example, when you scroll the browser keeps the focus on the text even if you swipe the finger slightly across instead of perfectly vertically. It's only when you deliberately scroll sideways does the browser unlock itself from the text, but then if you happen to scroll sideways again it will latch on to the text to keep it in focus again. This way you don't have to worry about swiping very accurately when reading as the browser disregards minor scrolling errors and keeps the focus on the text. This happens to some extent on the built-in Android browser as well but not on Opera Mobile where even a tiny cross scroll can make the browser lose focus from the text and scroll in the direction of the finger. The new tap-only text wrap mode is a nice feature. This way I can choose when I want the browser to adjust the text to the screen on the fly without having to dig into the settings every time. At times text wrap can mess with the page layout considerably, so it is nice to not have it on all the time. We did come across some page rendering issues that have always plagued Opera browsers. The WebKit browsers on Android and iOS do a better job of accurately rendering almost every page you throw at them, but the Presto engine on the Opera Mobile does screw up occasionally. This has been our biggest grouse with the desktop browser as well. We also noticed that Opera Mobile uses a different font from the Droid Sans that Android uses. And it uses the font for all the pages, regardless of what font the website is using. The new Opera Mobile has geolocation support as well, so you can now geotag your tweets when you tweet from Opera Mobile on Twitter.com. It also adds support for scalable vector graphics. Overall the Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for Android is a really nice browser. Unfortunately it is launching on a platform that already has a very capable browser built-in, unlike Symbian for example, where the built-in browser is quite poor. Then again, it is a free download, so there is nothing stopping you from installing it and giving it a try. Source: Techtree

NPCI Opens Floodgates for Mobile Payments in India
rajanmehta replied to kesav's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Mark my words!! This is going to revolutionize Online Payments in India. NEFT and RTGS has its share in improving payment mechanisms in India but this is huge and the positive impact it will have in financial inclusion and finally the common man using e payments with the indigenous solution is going to be a game changer. Why this is going to be so, -You don't need an internet connection. -You don't need a PC. -You only need a mobile and registration with the participating bank with your mobile no. Right now 5-6 banks but expect this no. to go up very high shortly as this has just commenced. -Your payee also needs to be registered with his mobile no. -Can transfer Rs 50,000 daily now to any participating bank account through your mobile. -The Credit to the payee is instant. -You can transfer during any time in 24 hours. -Charges are going to be very reasonable as NCPI is going to charge only 25 paise per transaction to the participating bank. Banks will be free to decide their charges. Some things change the path of development of a country drastically. This is going to be one of them. Thanks Kesav for bringing this very important piece of news for everyone's attention. +1 for you. -

Home ministry official arrested for leaking sensitive info on Mobile Number Portability NEW DELHI: An IAS officer working with the Home Ministry was arrested today for allegedly leaking sensitive information of commercial interests to some telecom companies on number portability issue. Ravi Inder Singh, a 1994 batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre, who was working as Director in the sensitive Internal Security division, was under surveillance of the Special Cell of Delhi Police and was arrested this evening following which searches were carried out at his office and residence, sources said. The sources said charges of abuse of official position, pecuniary benefits and illegal gratification under the Prevention of Corruption Act could be slapped against the official. Sources said that he had allegedly indulged in criminal conspiracy with some telecom firms on the issue of number portability of mobile phones which comes into effect from November 25 beginning with Haryana. Mobile number portability (MNP) allows mobile users to change their service provider while retaining the same number. However, Delhi Police remained tightlipped with its Special Commissioner P N Aggarwal claiming that no one had been arrested so far. Earlier, Home Secretary G K Pillai said a raid has been conducted on Singh's office and residence following allegation that he has been leaking sensitive information out of Home Ministry. A Home Ministry source said Singh was passing sensitive information to commercial firms in connection with security clearance. The officer has been under surveillance for about a month. The Internal Security Division of the Home Ministry is considered to be the most sensitive wing and handles all crucial issues related to the country's security. Times of India -

Mumbai's Death Trap: 10 Railway Commuters Die Per Day
rajanmehta replied to kshah's topic in The Lounge
How A Consultancy Firm's Unique Behavioural Science Approach Helped Reducing Track Crossing Deaths In Mumbai Since December 22, Wadala Railway Station – where there would otherwise be at least one track death or injury a day – hasn't witnessed a single casualty. While there haven't been any drastic changes in infrastructure, the Railways have put one thing in place: a mind game. Following Mumbai Mirror's 'Keeping track' campaign and various failed initiatives by the Railways, a Mumbai–based consultancy called Final Mile swung into action. The company, which provides behavioural science solutions, began analysing the places where trespassing deaths are a regular phenomenon. Behavioural architects Satish Krishnamurthy and Jayal Shroff, who work for Final Mile, spent more than 100 man hours on various CR stations. "We spoke to commuters, motormen and local residents. We didn't ask them any obvious questions like why people cross tracks. We preferred observing their habits and the situations that lead them to it. Most of the accidents took place during peak hours, 8 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 9 pm. That meant most victims were in a hurry to catch a train. Around 85 per cent of the victims were male, who tend to be overconfident about their behaviour," explained Krishnamurthy. Through their research, they came up with some easy-to-implement solutions they hoped to try as an experiment, and when they approached Central Railway, they were given a go ahead. "As long as we were able to save lives, we were open to all kinds of experiments. The firm spoke about changing the ways in which commuters act and for us it was another effort to save lives, so we provided them with all the support they needed," said CR chief public relations officer Shriniwas Mudgerikar. The two chose to initiate their experiment at Wadala Station, which had shown a 25 per cent increase – the highest – in the number of trespassing accidents in the last one year. "We found out that on an average, 25 people crossed the tracks at this station every minute, which increased to 45 during peak hours. There were long walkers who walked along the tracks and cross walkers who tended to quickly jump across to reach the other side. Surprisingly most of the accidents had taken place in broad daylight," added Krishnamurthy. In October last year, the team began implementing its plans – putting up a series of photographs of a man as he is crushed by a train; putting up whistle boards 150 metres away from accident–prone spots, from where all motormen must blow a horn; and painting bright yellow stripes on the tracks so trespassers can gauge the speed of approaching trains. These installations were in place by the end of December, and so far, the results have been phenomenal. "The project is at an experimental stage as of now. We will try it out for some more time, and if the success continues, we will implement it at other stations, too," concluded Mudgerikar. CHANGE 1: Countering the flight response A three-panel photograph of a man being run over by a train has been put up at the end of the platform, where people are usually tempted to cross tracks. Behavioural architect Jayal Shroff said, "The idea was to elicit an appropriate emotional memory, where a fear to face the situation would deter people from crossing the tracks." Shroff and her team came up with the idea after they observed that commuters had become blind towards the warning signs put up at railway stations. "The phenomenon works at an unconscious level, where people imagine themselves in such situations and would be alert about the danger. The idea is not to stop them from crossing, but making them alert if they do," she added Change 2: Cocktail party effect The theory says the brain isn't wired to do two activities simultaneously. "A person will be able to register one train approaching, but might not register the one on the adjacent track. A sudden honk confuses them instead of alerting them. Thus, we installed whistle boards just ahead of Wadala Station – 150 metres away from the usual accident spots – and motormen have been advised to give two short, rapid honks," said Satish Krishnamurthy Change 3: A combination of Leibowitz Hypothesis and Looming Effect The theory says large objects appear to move slower than small objects and people can't judge their speed. "Commuters fail to realise the speed of trains. To solve this, we painted a sequence of railway sleepers in bright yellow at regular intervals. And when the train approaches, our eyes catch them disappearing under it, which helps the brain get a better idea of distances and how fast a train is moving," said Shroff And How This Unique Idea Actually Resulted in Drops in Death Rates on Tracks Our interventions along with the Central Railway efforts have managed to bring down death rates by as much as 70% in some sections. The success of this approach hinges on two important factors. Big behavioural problems don't need fancy solutions with large budgets and huge resources, but a fundamentally different approach that is designed on the unconscious. That is your big idea. And secondly, the biggest success of this approach hinges on the fact that it is possible to change behaviour of people without them even being aware of the fact that we are changing their behaviour. -

Transition-Plane in the Sky, Car On The Road Go from home to airport, in the sky, then again on the Road The Terrafugia Transition could redefine the convertible. And door-to-door travel. Designed by a team of MIT aeronautics engineers, including Terrafugia co-founders Carl Dietrich and his wife Anna Mracek Dietrich, the Transition is a street-legal, airworthy, airbag-and-parachute-equipped flying car that at $200,000 is priced less than a Lamborghini. The first models will be delivered next year. True, with its wings retracted like football goalposts, the Transition, whose 100-horsepower engine gets it 35 m.p.g. on terra firma, isn't going to be a match for an Italian sports car. But extend the vehicle's gull wings — and you are requested to do this at an airport — and the rear-propeller-powered Transition can fly two passengers about 500 miles at a cruising speed of 105 m.p.h. After you land, you will not be heading to the rental counter Manufacturer Site http://www.terrafugia.com/index.html

Thank you everyone for kind words of encouragement Another One. Looxcie, A Futuristic Wearable Bluetooth Camcorder Just when you thought you have seen it all — and recorded it — Looxcie, a camera worn over the ear, ups the ante. Invented by a parent who found himself fumbling with video cameras while trying to record children's parties, Looxcie can capture everything the user sees for up to five hours, hands-free. And with the press of a button, a clip of the last 30 seconds of film can be sent to a Facebook page, YouTube or a preset e-mail address via a companion app on your android phone from where you can edit and upload it— making Looxcie the perfect device for the age of audio-video oversharing. Android app also acts as a live viewfinder for the camera. A reversible earplug fits in either ear-hole. If you only use it as a Bluetooth headset, it will last for 10 hours, and if a call comes in while you are filming, the video recording is muted. Why Surround Sound Is Good For You
rajanmehta replied to Honest's topic in General Technical Discussion
Have seen most of the people playing downloaded 320 kbps mp3 on their home theater whether stereo or 5.1 surround. Hardly 2-3% buy original music cd containing may be one good song for rs 160 It makes no difference to them whether sound is better in Stereo or 5.1.!! Same thing for Original 5.1 DVD. Not many buyers and almost none for English movies ( Rs 500 upwards) Most people use downloaded files or DVD from Roadside vendors. Again 5.1 makes no difference to them. Still the same type of people will go ahead and buy good no. of costly home theaters in India. What a paradox!! Though situation is somewhat better now with large scale DVD Libraries like Big Flix. -
