Nokia Granted Preliminary Injunction Against HTC One In The Netherlands Over High-Amplitude Mics Source Don't worry, this time it's not a patent issue. However, it is more bad news for HTC's already-delayed One. Nokia has been granted an injunction by the Amsterdam district court concerning the technology HTC used in its current flagship. The legal battle involves a pair of high-amplitude mics housed within One's aluminum body, which are apparently the same dual-membrane components that Nokia's used in its recent Lumia 720, seen above. The Finnish company recently applied for a preliminary injunction, pointing the finger at ST Microelectronics, which is responsible for manufacturing the mic for both Nokia and HTC. According to our source, the issue is likely to be a breach of an NDA between Nokia and ST Electronics, as the phone maker asserts that the "microphone components [were] invented by and manufactured exclusively for Nokia." We're still hearing new details and will update as we learn more. We've also reached out to HTC for comment. For now, you can read up on Nokia's statement following the court's decision, embedded after the break. Update: HTC has offered up an official statement in response to the injunction: "HTC is disappointed in the decision. We are considering whether it will have any impact on our business and we will explore alternative solutions immediately."

HTC Mini: A Glorified Bluetooth Headset or The Answer To All Our Phablet Woes? Source Cnet: Hands-on: HTC Mini >> http://asia.cnet.com/hands-on-htc-mini-62221181.htm In the year 2013 a smartphone is many things. It is a camera, gaming console, social media hub, television set, internet browser, planner and an all out miniature computer that fits in your pocket. However, it’s all too easy to forget that a smartphone is at heart still a PHONE. There are those of us who claim that we look stupid holding our Galaxy Note 2’s and other 5-inch+ behemoths to our heads to talk. They long for the days when you could completely wrap your hand around your Nokia and it would barely seem as if you were on the phone. Maybe it was easier to get away with talking on the phone while driving? Who knows? But hang on, you still want to be able to tweet, game, snap photos and browse the web on their smartphone? Well, HTC has heard your screams for help on those lonely nights. The company has created a device which they have quite aptly named the HTC Mini, designed to help you conquer your phablet problems. The HTC Mini is a product designed to act as what could be considered a Bluetooth headset replacement or rather as HTC put it “an enhanced Bluetooth accessory”. A throwback to the old feature phone days, it is basically a phone for your phone. Hang on, before you dismiss this as a ludicrous idea and claim HTC have well and truly lost their marbles, it does more than make a simple phone call. It can search through your contacts on its tiny 1.6 inch screen, let you read and reply to texts, let you check your calendar, play music remotely and take pictures remotely. This would be especially helpful in removing that dreaded camera shake and to take timed shots and timelapse video. After taking the photos you can then remotely view them in a style reminiscent to Microsoft PowerPoint. Setting up the device is quite simple, since the Mini has NFC capabilities and with a simple tap it pairs with your smartphone through Bluetooth. With a range of about 10 metres, some would see it useful for use in an office environment while their phone is on charge. Others could see it as a solution to pulling their phones out of their exceptionally tight jeans to you or make calls and to reply to text messages. However, that is not recommended as the device has no touch screen and instead you must type on the alphanumeric keyboard provided. However, the ultimate blow to those who still shudder at the thought of raising a 5 inch smartphone to their heads, is that it is not sold as a separate device and is only available in China, free with a HTC Butterfly and on some telcos in Singapore. Not only that, but if you were planning on grabbing it as a companion device for your Galaxy Note 2 you’ll be disappointed to know that you’ll be limited to calling capabilities and without a SIM slot for itself the Mini would be nothing but a paperweight for those looking for a feature phone made by HTC.

  17. For elderly people, using a normal mobile phone is quite a task in itself. Here we have chosen the best phones for the elderly. Rahul Gupta, The Mobile Indian, New Delhi, March 17, 2011 Although a high resolution camera, faster performance, high resolution displays and multimedia are becoming key identifiers of a good mobile phone; these features are nothing more than a nuisance for some, especially elders. With age our eyesight and hearing weaken. For old people, using a normal mobile phone is quite a task in itself. So rather than let the elderly struggle with cell phones, we have identified some mobile phones that are specifically designed for them. iBall Aasan The iBall Aasan might look like a funny little mobile phone but for senior people it is nothing short of a boon. Its extra large back-lit keys and large but simple display are very easy on the eye. The design of this phone is such that it fits easily in the palm and does not cause any discomfort while holding. The shortcut keys are placed on the side for easy access and include buttons for torch and wireless FM radio. The phone features a loudspeaker and the earpiece is tuned at a louder volume as compared to most other mobile phones. One of the remarkable features of this device is its SOS feature. This emergency feature allows the user to send a pre-recorded emergency message to five preset numbers at the touch of a button. After that the phone calls the numbers one after another until a call is answered, if not the phone repeats the loop three times. It is priced at Rs 3,500. Skymoon D1201 You might have not heard about this manufacturer but you will find its phones in the market soon. The D1201 is a small mobile phone but with a big keypad and a 1.7 inch display, for easy readability and operation. This phone also features a flashlight and wireless FM. There are shortcut keys located on the sides that can be used to access FM and the torch, and to control the volume. The design of this phone is quite similar to that of the iBall Aasan. It is priced at Rs 1,500. Other cell phones that provide great functionality for senior people are available only in the international market. However, people in India can buy them through channels such as Ebay Global. Two of such phones are mentioned below. Samsung Jitterbug Even though senior people like simplicity and prefer functionality over design, Samsung has dared to provide the first clam-shell cell phone for them. The keypad is big with backlit keys that make readability better in both bright as well as dark light conditions. The phone features dual displays, with large character size and powerful speakers that make listening to calls possible in both noisy and quiet environments. It is priced at Rs 3,700. Just 5 When it comes to mobiles for seniors, all phones feature a big keypad and big character display. The major benefit of this phone is the emergency response feature, but in India you won't be able to use it. Here you will be using it as a basic phone with loudspeaker, wireless radio, and flashlight — all standard features found on such devices. It costs about Rs 4,500.
  18. World's First Smartphone For The Blind, Made in India Source AHMEDABAD: The world's first smartphone for blind people is here. Soon, they will be able to read SMSes and emails on this phone, which converts all text into Braille patterns. "We have created the world's first Braille smartphone," says its innovator, Sumit Dagar, whose company is being incubated at the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship, located in IIM Ahmedabad campus. "This product is based on an innovative 'touch screen' which is capable of elevating and depressing the contents it receives to transform them into 'touchable' patterns," he says. Dagar, who is a post-graduate from the National Institute of Design (NID), says he was motivated to develop the device when he realised that so far, technology was only serving the mainstream and ignoring the marginalised. He is collaborating with IIT Delhi on making the prototype, which is currently being tested at L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad. "The response during the test has been immense. It comes out as a companion more than a phone to the user. We plan to do more advanced versions of the phone in the future," Dagar adds. Dagar started the project three years ago while studying interaction designing at NID. After working with a couple of companies, he gave up his job to concentrate on his technology, formed a team of six people and started his venture, Kriyate Design Solutions. Currently, the venture is being funded by Rolex Awards under its Young Laureates Programme, in which they select five people from across the world every two years and fund their projects. How it works The smartphone uses Shape Memory Alloy technology, based on the concept that metals remember their original shapes, i.e. expand and contract to its original shape after use. The phone's 'screen' has a grid of pins, which move up and down as per requirement. The grid has a Braille display, where pins come up to represent a character or letter. This screen will be capable of elevating and depressing the contents to form patterns in Braille. All other elements are like any other smartphone.
