  1. Reliance Likely To Bid For Telecom Spectrum Source Reliance Industries is likely to bid for mobile telephone spectrum in the upcoming auction to complement its wireless broadband services with voice call facility. The oil-to-textile group headed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani is making a re-entry into the telecommunication business and is being talked as the most aggressive bidder in the November auction of telecom spectrum. Sitting on a cash-pile of Rs 70,732 crore at the end of the June quarter, RIL was the most notable participant at the pre-bid conference organised by the Department of Telecom (DoT) in the run-up to the auction. RIL is most likely to put a direct bid, a source privy to the development said. If for some reasons it is unable to make a bid by itself, the company may fund purchase of spectrum by another company and then acquire it. A company spokesperson declined to comment on speculation about the issue. The company had in 2010 re-entered the telecom space after it acquired Infotel Broadband which had won pan-India spectrum for offering high-speed internet broadband. The pan-India spectrum that RIL holds through Infotel Broadband does not has permission to provide voice calling facility. Any spectrum that does not allow voice calls is not a big revenue earner and so RIL as the next logical step would want to acquire spectrum which it can bundle its high speed mobile broadband service, the source said. The government plans to begin auction of spectrum vacated from cancellation of 122 telecom licenses by the Supreme Court, from November 12. The source said representatives of RIL subsidiary Infotel Broadband have been attended meetings organised by Department of telecommunications on proposed spectrum auction. RIL entered in to telecom business by acquiring Infotel Broadband on the day the later won pan-India airwaves frequencies for Rs 12,847.71 crore in 2010. The company has already revealed its plan to use LTE technology for its country wide network deployment but is yet to start its services. Government has plans to auction airwaves frequencies in 1800 Mhz band and 800 Mhz band which are being currently used for GSM and CDMA mobile telephony services respectively. A new player bidding for 1800 will have to pay minimum of Rs 14,000 crore for pan-India services and for 800 Mhz band it is Rs 9,100 crore. According to auction rules, for 1800 Mhz band, new entrants will be required to bid for minimum of 4 blocks each of 1.25MHz in each service area and for 800 Mhz band it is minimum of 2 blocks each of 1.25MHz in each service area. RIL has plans to provide digital services in key domains of national interest such as education, healthcare, security, financial services, government-citizen interfaces and entertainment.

  4. Android OS & Apps - Security Threats & Vulnerability

Got TouchWiz? Some Samsung Smartphones Can Be Totally Wiped By Clicking A Link Source Demo Dirty use of USSD Codes in Cellular Network en Ekoparty 2012 VIDEO Curious to see if your Samsung phone is vulnerable? A chap named Dylan Reeve cobbled together a test site that replaces the reset code with one that prompts your device to display its IMEI number. If your phone willingly offers up its identifier number, well, just be careful of what links you follow until Samsung gets something figured out (and switch to a new dialer app while you’re at it). At a recent security conference in Argentina, Technical University Berlin researcher Ravi Borgaonkar showed off a slightly disturbing vulnerability that could prompt a Samsung phone to wipe itself completely after an unsuspecting user clicks a link. Here’s the exploit in a nutshell: a simple line of HTML (which we won’t be reproducing for obvious reasons) goads a vulnerable device into dialing a specific USSD code that triggers a full wipe/reset. According to SlashGear and The Next Web, vulnerable devices include the popular Galaxy S II and S III series, as well as the Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy Beam, and Galaxy Ace. Well damn. This whole thing boils down to how Samsung’s TouchWiz dialer handles these USSD codes — stock Android devices like the Galaxy Nexus interpret the code properly and loads the key-combination for a reset into the dialer but doesn’t actually pull the trigger on its own. Meanwhile, the TouchWiz dialer takes things a step further by dialing the code automatically, which in South Park parlance means you’re going to have a bad time. As it turns out, it’s not just the dialer’s fault here — the way the stock browser handles the “tel:” protocol handler seems partially to blame too. Using Chrome and other third-party browsers seems to help mitigate the issue, though some reports on the xda-developers forum claim otherwise. That said though, the easiest way for an utter ******* to spread a bit of despair would be wrap that offending code in an iframe, run it through a URL shortener (as some have already done purely in the name of science), and spread it around. Oh, but it doesn’t end there — Borgaonkar also noted on-stage that a simple text message could also be used as an attack vector, as well as QR codes (only with some QR code scanners) and link sharing through NFC/Android Beam. Samsung hasn’t yet released an official statement on the matter, but representatives have told The Verge that the company is looking into it. Remote USSD Attack - Prevention

This issue seems widespread than expected! iPhone 5 owners report scuffs and scratches out of the box Source When Apple VP Phil Schiller took the stage on September 12th to talk about the company’s new iPhone 5 hardware he went on at length about the exacting level of precision that goes into its manufacture. But despite Apple's insistence that its tolerances are measured in microns, several iPhone 5 owners are reporting that their new devices are arriving with a variety of scuffs and scrapes out of the box (myself included, pictured above). The company’s record-breaking sales numbers certainly don’t make it easy to guess at how widespread the issue is, but an informal poll in the MacRumors forums indicates that out of some 1260 respondents, more than a third are reporting some kind of damage. The source of the scuffs (pictured below) is anyone’s guess, but as All Things D points out, the iPhone 5’s case is made out of anodized (i.e., coated) aluminum, which, while being lighter than the stainless steel used in the iPhone 4 and 4S, is also softer and appears to be more susceptible to scratching. iPhone 5 scuff photos
  9. Apple iPhone 5 & iOS6 discussion

Another quality control issue hits Apple as iPhone 5 owners report light leaks Source In light of all the complaints from customers receiving new iPhone 5 handsets that scratch and scuff easily, it appears another problem is plaguing Apple’s (AAPL) latest product: light leakage. According to MacRumors forum member “Leotno,” some white iPhone 5 models are showing slight light leakage between device’s glass display and chamfered aluminum antenna. BGR has confirmed on one of its own units (see photo below) that there is indeed a small crack on some new iPhone 5 units located just below the home button. It’s uncertain at this point if the issue is an isolated one that affects only some iPhone 5 models or if it’s actually a widespread defect. The light leak and loosening chamfer on BGR’s defective iPhone 5 was a 64GB white and silver model running on AT&T. The light leak is unnoticeable except when the iPhone 5 is used under low-light or completely dark situations. Various members on the MacRumors forums have reported the same problem, with some receiving brand new (not refurbished) models as replacements from Apple Stores. One member who goes by the handle “vineetnangia” said the replacement Apple provided still had the same issue. 11. Gadgets Of Our World

This is ultra high tech japanese time pass! Brain Controlled Kitty Tail For Humans is Called Shippo Source It seems there’s no shortage of strange gadgets coming out of Japan. In the past, we’ve seen some rather odd necomimi robotic cat ears that would move based on your mood. Something that appears to be made to go along with those robotic cat ears has now surfaced called the Shippo brain controlled tail. The tail is worn around the waist and is connected to a sensor that claims to sense the wearer’s mood. The tail interfaces with a smartphone app that lets users share their mood. The user can also use the app to search for places other Shippo users found relaxing. The video shows that the tail wags slowly when a user is relaxed and wags quickly when the user is excited. The app also claims to be able to detect when the person is frightened. I wonder if one neural controller might be able to operate the robotic cat ears and the robotic tail. I still think these are some of the strangest gadgets I’ve seen in a long time. neurowear "shippo / brain controlled tail" VIDEO neurowear "necomimi" VIDEO

Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away Source Aside from handling Verizon's LTE waves just fine, the nano-SIM slot will also accept cards from any other GSM carrier worldwide. In other words, AT&T nano-SIMs will get you onto its HSPA+ network, and T-Mobile nano-SIMs will play nice as well. If you're heading overseas, you can pick up a local nano-SIM on arrival and plug it straight in -- no unlocking code necessary. To confirm, this even applies to Verizon iPhone 5 units that were purchased under contract.

  25. Google Nexus 7 Tablet

Nexus 7 India Launch in November: Asus Source Nexus 7, the $199 tablet from Google is expected to reach Indian shores this November. The announcement came at a press event hosted by Asus India in Bengaluru. We had earlier reported that a 3G model of the Nexus 7 might be in the works, courtesy Paul from Modaco, with a delay in the Indian launch of the tablet, which was expected to arrive in October. The delay, we feel, may be attributed to the development of the 3G version, which does make sense for a market like India. Details regarding pricing of the 7-inch tablet were missing at the event, but the company has said that it may be available by next month end.
