  13. How this mega tele deal'll affect you MANOJ GAIROLA TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, APRIL 01, 2004 12:16:28 AM ] NEW DELHI: The stage is being set for the biggest deal in the Indian telecom sector . NRI businessman C Sivasankaran is believed to be close to selling his telecom holding company Aircel Televentures, which owns 100 per cent in Aircel and Aircel Cellular. Aircel is the largest cellular service provider in the Tamil Nadu circle which excludes Chennai, while Aircel Cellular is the second largest service operator in Chennai. Bharti and Idea are believed to be in the race for buying the companies at a valuation close to Rs 1,700 crore. The deal is likely to be closed by the end of the month. Both the companies are operating at EBITDA level of 45 per cent. Sources said, the companies are being valued at eight times EBIDTA level, which is in the range of Rs 1,700 crore to Rs 2,000 crore. When contacted, Aircel officials refused to comment on the developments. Sources involved in the deal, however, said the deal is expected to be complete by the end of April. Bharti officials also declined to comment. In Tamil Nadu, Aircel is the largest cellular service provider with a subscriber base of 5,90,848. BSNL, the second largest cellular service provider had a subscriber base of 3,35,000 at the end of February, 2004. In Chennai, Aircel Cellular is the second largest cellular service provider. It had a subscriber base of 254,993, while the largest cellular service operator Bharti had a subscriber base of 361,151 at the end of February, 2004. Aircel commenced operations in 1999; Sivasankaran acquired the Chennai circle from Vodafone and the RPG Group. The deal was completed in December 2003. Since then the Chennai licence has been held in Aircel Cellular, a 100 per cent company owned by Aircel Televentures. The two companies are expected to make a combined EBIDTA of Rs 195 crore during this fiscal. It is expected to grow to Rs 275 crore during next fiscal. The combined debt in the company is around Rs 350 crore. Sources involved in the deal said the valuation at eight times EBIDTA is quite attractive compared to that of the current trading multiples of 20 times EBIDTA for Bharti. When the deal is complete, it would be the largest deal in the telecom sector. Earlier, the largest deal was that of Idea acquiring Escotel at an enterprise value of about Rs 1,350 crore. In terms of equity value, the deal was quite small as Escotel has huge debt. In the case of Aircel, equity valuation would be in the range of Rs 1,000 crore. Sivasankaran’s Sterling group is a cash rich group. Recently, it sold its broadband and internet business of Dishnet to Tata-owned VSNL for Rs 270 crore and Tamil Mercantile Bank to the Nadar community for about Rs 300 crore. It has investments in real estate worth more than Rs 200 crore. Sivasankaran may even sell his stake on a part debt instrument. Aircel was the first company in the country to bring down cellular prices at par with that of basic services. Its tariff of 40 paise per minute anywhere in Tamil Nadu about four years ago initiated a price war in the country. It was also first to make incoming calls on cellular network free. In its network incoming calls are free for last four years. Airtel of Bharti is an operator both in Tamil Nadu and Chennai, while Idea does not provide services in either of the circles.
  14. More BPO jobs from Reliance Info RAJESHWARI ADAPPA THAKUR TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, APRIL 01, 2004 01:42:07 AM ] MUMBAI: Reliance Infocomm plans to enter the business process outsourcing (BPO) business in a big way. With this, the company hopes to capitalise on the Flag Telecom acquisition and the additional bandwidth that has been made available recently. In the meantime, till it finalises its BPO plans, it is setting up regional call centres to service its own subscribers. The first regional call centre is being setup in Chennai and a second one is being set up in the East. In Chennai, the company is starting with a 500-seater call center, but will scale up over time. The need for starting regional call centres was felt due to the dearth of persons who could speak the regional languages, particularly the south Indian languages and Eastern languages in a place like Mumbai. “It would be easier to get a Bengali-speaking candidate in the East than in Mumbai,'' pointed out Suyash Saraogi, vice-president, Reliance Infocomm. The language problem is more a constraint in the south and the east. In the north, language is not a problem, because everyone speaks Hindi. But in the south, each state has a different language, hence the need for dedicated personnel. This is the first time that a call center is being set up outside Reliance Info's sprawling campus at Vashi, the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC). At present, Reliance has a 3200-seater call center at the DAKC. Of this, a small number, around 250 seats, are used to service American Bank. The balance seats are part of the Reliance Info's customer care team and help service the company's own subscriber base. “We will be adding another 250 seats in the Mumbai call center,'' said K Chandrasekaran, president-IT Enabled Services. Meanwhile, Reliance Info is planning to wire-up around 10 lakh buildings across the 10 big metros as part of its broadband offering. By the end of the year, the company plans to cover at least 70 towns across the country.

  23. Reliance WebWorld Express Set To Enter Small Towns KRISHNA GOPALAN MUMBAI: Reliance Infocomm has drawn up its plan for the “WebWorld Express” retail project which is expected to increase visibility and penetration for its Reliance IndiaMobile (RIM) service. The company will have over 1500 such outlets which will be spread across smaller towns in India. WebWorld Express will be smaller in size since it will restrict itself to being a sales and service point for the RIM service. It is learnt that the company is still looking for ways to offer other services depending on the response that WebWorld Express initially generates. Company officials said it would be completed by the end of the next financial year (March 31, 2005). Reliance Infocomm is working to launch the first store in about a month. Officials said WebWorld Express will be part of the Reliance WebWorld family and will be based on the same business model. The outlets will be based on the C3 model - Customer Convenience Centre. Interestingly, WebWorld Express will have a mix of both the company-owned and franchisee models. This is an attempt to reduce risk and facilitate easier management of the project. As reported earlier, the impending petrol pumps project will also have Webworld Express outlets at the pumps. Reliance WebWorld, on its own, today has over 250 outlets across India which act as outlets for the wireless service, apart from offering a host of convergence and broadband-related services. Among these are gaming, video chat, video conferenecing, digital music and music downloading. Reliance WebWorld outlets also offer the Java Green service which is part of its Food and Beverage (F& offering. The retail plan is said to be a significant part of Reliance Infocomm’s overall convergence project. The company launched its RIM service a year ago and is expected to move forward on the other components of the broadband arena. A backbone network to the extent of 60,000 kilometres of optic fibre cable (OFC) will offer the consumer both retail and enterprise services. Reliance Industries Ltd, which holds a 45 per cent stake in Reliance Infocomm, has invested about Rs 8,500 crore in the infocomm project. http://www.financialexpress.com/fe_full_st...ontent_id=55748
