  2. A far better way to indicate cell tower signal strength is to display the actual signal power in "dBM." This is the signal power level, in decibels, referenced to a signal power of 1 milliwatt. The level will ALWAYS be a "negative" number as your signal level will always be less than 1 milliwatt, much less. To change your display from "5 Bars" to signal power in dBM, do the following: With one finger, hold down the ALT key on the far left. Now, with your other hand, press the letter sequence NMLL. Your display should instantly change from "5 Bar" to signal power in dBM. To revert BACK to "5 Bar," do the same thing again. There is ONE CAVEAT in doing this. An extremely WEAK signal, less than or equal -100 dBM, will NOT show on-screen becuz only 2 digits can be displayed. So, when your signal level gets VERY VERY weak, at, say, -99 dBM, a further drop will change the display to "-10," then "-11" etc, corresponding to signal powers in the -100 to -119 dBM range. This is of no real problem tho, as your phone probably wont work at that low a level anyway, BUT you can experiment with an iinduction coupled external antenna if you want. Also, it is highly unlikely you will ever see a signal level HIGHER than about -40 dBM, i.e. -39, -38, yada yada, dBM. For those who are technically oriented, as most BB Users are, and want MORE, here is an approximate tabulation of the # of Bars vs. signal level in dBM: 1 bar ~ -102 to -120 dBM 2 Bars ~ -93 to -101 dBM 3 Bars ~ -87 to -92 dBM 4 Bars ~ -78 to -86 dBM 5 Bars ~ -40 to -77 dBM

  5. It was in March that UK based social networking handset maker INQ officially made its entry in India. However, the hitch was that the two new phones - Mini 3G and Chat 3G - were network locked. This meant that if you wanted to use these handsets here in India, you could do it only with an Aircel connection. The good news now is that INQ has introduced the same handsets in India, but this time they come unlocked. You can now use them with the network of your choice. Both the handsets boast of Twitter and other social network capabilities as mentioned earlier. Both the devices are capable multimedia handsets too, with support for WMP and iTunes synchronization. The INQ Chat comes with a QWERTY keyboard for helping users chat with ease. The INQ Mini, on the other hand, is a "normal" device with a standard keypad. Both the devices come with access to instant messaging clients, Skype support and a capable Internet browser. INQ is famous for its Facebook phone and with Facebook slowly becoming the most used social networking website in India, it was only natural that the Facebook phone makes an entry here. It is reported that the unlocked INQ Chat 3G will priced Rs. 7,549 throughout the country, except Maharashtra, where it will cost Rs. 7,999. The INQ Mini 3G will cost Rs. 5,349 everywhere except for Maharashtra where it is priced at Rs. 5,599.
  6. Plz Suggest A Basic Gsm Phone

Samsung certainly seems to be gathering momentum in the entry-level segment. @himanshu - please download samsung pc studio from the samsung india site and get hold of a compatible datacable.. the guru series supports both midi / mp3 tones.. the internal memory may be a cache if ur particular model doesnt have expandable memory...
  7. All izzz wellll!!!
  8. oh Amitabh ji.. i manage a datacenter.. can take care of that.. the kid's PC need not have net access.. thats why no direct connection to the public repository Cheers!!
  9. cool Ami1.. u r the man!!!
  10. Hi James.. the driver is available on the reliance site itself.. the netconnect one though.. Just click here and get it. Cheers!!
  11. Plz Suggest A Basic Gsm Phone

yes sir.. the 111x series were the last low end ones to be made abroad.. Cheers!!
  12. thanks Ami1.. Nvidia works outa the box!! wonderful.. Virtual repository.. ouch.!! donno how i missed that idea. This machine is not connected to the net but my machine is.. so a crossover cable is wat is required here.. i will be putting the machine in peer with mine while my machine will act as the rpm repository.. there is a setting somewhere to change the default repository location.. have done it on RHEL.. will look it up for PCL.. no problem at all!! Now that we have the repository problem resolved.. dont think codec download would be a problem at all.. Thanks n Cheers!!
  13. Plz Suggest A Basic Gsm Phone

very true.. cellphones being an integral part of our life and business have to seamlessly blend with us. Nokia had it going well till they had their manufacturing abroad.. once they started making phones in India they seem to have entered a never ending cycle of cost-cutting, even in the essentials. Samsung seems to be doing a good balancing act.. So its ur personal choice my friend.. if u feel nokia can do the job for u go for it without any second thought.. Cheers!!!
  14. Plz Suggest A Basic Gsm Phone

No.. it doesnt have the send later function.. They keypad of the b100 and all other guru models i have seen have dustproof keypads.. messaging is pretty fast once u get used to it. The keys also give a good tactile finish and the phone has a sturdy finish.. Nokia 1203's rubber keypad kind of swells with use.. so its up to u.. i am not anti-Nokia but we should give a fair chance for other companies too and that too when they are making really commendable products.. T9 - switchin to T9 needs a different key combination compared to nokia's interface and rotating word options needs u to press 0.. this can be better understood when u try it out for urself.. Cheers!!
  15. Perspectives vary from person to person.. and our forum is a convergence of different views.. so chill and cheers!!!
  16. @Tanveer.. its not the product that we at rimweb see... we see through it and what matters is the purpose.. and thats wat Pranav is coming to.. However all said and done.. Sony should be praised at this point for bringing in a BR to the sub 10k market.. but dont worry the chinese mills are already running and be ready to be surprised by their ultracheap lineup of BR's Cheers!!
  17. @Ami1... got two questions for u on PCL. - are the video codecs for divx, etc available in the initial iso itself or do we need to connect to the repository for them - wat about compatibility with Nvidia video cards. cuz on ubuntu we need to get the driver from the repository to go past the 800x600 limitation. i need to know this as pcl looks easier for a computer newbie. besides the target computer here has very limited internet access. its for a kid in our family and he's about 6 years old.. we just want to keep him away from Windows Cheers!!
  18. Hitesh bhai.. Ubuntu has a whole OS flavor revolving around your requirement.. Its called Ubuntu Studio edition.. Check it out here and the best part its free! Cheers!!
  19. Playon HD would not play Blu rays besides what is the price of Blu Ray discs in india. I think in US they sell for 10$ or so a disc A blank Verbatim bluray media costs Rs.1,449/- on ebay india. So we can imagine the price of a movie available on bluray. Ofcourse there is a price to be paid for quality and recently developed technology.
  20. Ami1.. great start.. +1 to u... switching to linux has been a taboo topic for many people running windows.. the truth is that linux is far more manageable and configurable compared to windows.. i am a staunch evangelist of Ubuntu but dont discourage other flavors either.. From my experience for desktop applications mandrake distributions like PCLinux/Mandriva and debian releases like Ubuntu stand good. But when it comes to server deployments, i think RHEL stands out and the thinclient world is ruled by Novell's Suse.. Guys take a bold step into the world of linux.. u will never be bored again sittin in front of ur computer..
  21. Source SAN FRANCISCO: Google Inc said its fleet of cars responsible for photographing streets around the world have for several years accidentally collected personal information that consumers send over wireless networks. The company said on Friday that it is currently in touch with regulators in several countries, including the United States, Germany, France, Brazil and Hong Kong, about how to dispose of the data, which Google said it never used. "It's now clear that we have been mistakenly collecting samples of payload data from open (i.e. non-password-protected) WiFi networks," Google Senior VP of Engineering and Research Alan Eustace said in a post on Google's official blog on Friday. "As soon as we became aware of this problem, we grounded our Street View cars and segregated the data on our network, which we then disconnected to make it inaccessible," Eustace said.
  22. Whoops! Google Says Mistakenly Got Wireless Data

true Dhiraj bhai.. IT has its own risks.. we should note that google had accidentally collected info from unprotected wi-fi access points.. in this case its the guys who left their access points open who should be responsible.. I do appreciate google's sense of responsibility in coming out with this finding.. There may be data taken by google searchbots from public domain servers.. who would we blame.. google.. not at all.. its the people who posted sensitive info in the public domain... This statement would certainly increase awareness among wifi users for wep protecting their access points

@Anurag.. Samsung is really making itself strong in the entry level segment. I use a samsung phone (Guru B100) besides my javelin. The phone is pretty decent - it has a 1000mAh battery - lasts me 3-4 days easily with moderate use - signal pickup and audio quality is good Drawbacks are.. there is no fm, cam etc etc. Besides it does take some time to get used to samsung's interface especially their t9 implementation I think the b100 guru is no longer available in the market but there are many alternative guru's from samsung in 1k-2k segment for sure.. and one more + is that the guru phones are made in india and i feel like am using a Nok1100 at times...
  24. if its rumoured and if its true.. they better work on the connectivity part else it may never come out of their r&d stages for sure
  25. Wat no cellular networking capability and its called a BB Tablet.. LOL.. Logically its not at all acceptable.. i carry around a hefty tablet and for connectivity i should have a BB on me as well.. Wat good is a "BB" tablet without direct cellular connectivity and the addictive pushmail.. RIM guys are just trying to get a slice of the tablet cake.. thats all..
