Nav has a good AV. Its strong stable and easy to use and very regularly updated. Its firewall is pretty decent too. However, it is a resource hog, makes it makes all programs run ssssoooooooo sslllllllllllllooooooowwwwwwwwww!

Ummm quit? And without a notice period. A whole bunch of you. But RIM doesn't owe you anything, did they assure to absorb you in their company after X months? Its the duty of the company hiring you to give you raises and promotions and the like.

Webworld To Host Videoconfrencing Competetion
anujit replied to @ksh@T's topic in Reliance Communications
In a recent development, Dell has given EVDO a big boost by building in EVDO data modems into some of the laptops, in a venture with Verizon. So I think EVDO and wCDMA would be the way forward. -
I dont know what "bugs" you people keep talking about. My phone doesn't reboot and everything works just fine! I dont like certain "features" of the phone, but I'm yet to come across something that can be described as a bug! Well except my blue tooth disconnecting while I'm on the internet. The 6255 and 6235 are different handsets aimed at different groups. Depending on your budget I'd suggest you go for a 6255. Because a camera and MP3 player is wasted if you have 5 MB memory! If the 6235 came with an expansion slot and was significantly cheaper I might have recommended it.
-
The problem with having an "open market" is that RIM looses out on REVENUE from the handset sale. Secondly, if they have commercial sold handsets they cannot be preprogrammed to run RWorld and the like (more losses for RIM)! Although I suspect if they implement R-UIM properly they can take care of most problems! Now they market for corporate users is pretty stangnant. Airtel & Hutch took it away years ago. The only real major growth potential is in the semi-urban & rural markets. And they certainly arent going to buy a Blackberry or Treo 600 series phone! So Reliance's brand equity so to say is to provide cheap phones with a very very low ARPU. And now that Tata has come into its own that position is being strongly challeneged too.
-
Tata is offering the Nokia 6255 & 6235 now! So if you have the budget....

I tried to install Fedora core on my old PC. Damn thing wouldnt install even! I had successfully installed Red Hat 6,7 & 9 (all PC Quest distributions) on it before. But in each case they didnt work well with the display (SiS card I think it was) or my modem (Zoom). And dude only a fraction of the games/apps on Windows have been ported to Linux. Those might manage memory better but, like Mac stuff they're much much much harder to get around here. And (all of it is) impossible to get support for! I'm sticking to Windows. I like M$' knowledge base when I get stuck or have trouble. I like the fact that to install a program I just have to click on Install/Setup. Not unTar it then run arcane commands on it. I'll just have to live with the virus & hackers. As I said before isnt worth the trade off as yet!

But seeing LG in the initial days yes I must agree making decent mobile phones (especially build quality and UI) isnt an easy task and needs years of experience and expertise. Thats when LG decided to start copying Samsung! Samsung had taken a similar route previously till the came to a league of their own. I can imagine Erricson would have all the phone build know-how so its hard to understand the buggy software. I haven't tested their software. But I wish they'd make phones with bigger keypads. All their stuff is designed for people who have stylus sized fingers!

Well the 6255 and the 6235 are now available on Tata Indicom too!!!!!!

You'll get it back soon Ashok. Of course you can call them up and ask.

Installing Rconnect Without Dialer S/w, Cd &...
anujit replied to Utsav's topic in Technical / OS related
I used to use a 191 with a USB 2.0 connection. Worked perfect for me. With the dialer and without. -
AVG is good. But I prefer a suite that gives me everything together. Granted that 1 anti-spyware tool isnt good enough but still. I'd like a anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware and firewall tool in one application. And trust me you need it too! And AVG doesnt give me that. It does have a so so firewall guard that I tested when it was in beta. But that was it.

Dude your LAN speed is 100 Mbps. That means the speed of your ethernet card and the speed of your ethernet cable ONLY. Like in a office connection. This is NOT your ISPs speed. Ever seen an ad for a 100 Mbps (from Sify or anyone) connection dude? BUT, BUT BUT if you connect to another computer on your ISPs network (i.e. in a intranet) you WILL get close to 100Mbps! I understand you're saying that network congestion, signal strenght etc will not give me 2.4 Mbps. Thats true. But the ratio will not be that high (6kpbs to 100 Mbps). The reason you're not getting 100Mbps is because: a. You're not paying for it b. Your ISP cannot support it You're probably paying for a 128 kbps connection at best and getting very average throughput. The reason why we WILL be getting close to 2.4 Mbps is because the number of RIM customers using data services is very less. Hence more bandwith and other infrastructure is available on Reliance as compared to Verizon etc. Hence better throughputs. Not at 2.4 Mbps. But given the example they've set with the 144kbps 1x2000 systems, it shouldnt be too far behind! And of course nobody is expecting 2.4 Mbps. Of course there will be some drop in speed due to a million reasons. Does a 56kbps modem give you that speed. No. But that has very little to do with your ISP not giving you 100 Mbps! And Linuxguy: what on earth are you talking about. Most offices (especially BPO & software types) have connectivity of at least 20-30 Mbps! And yes they are running at those speeds and more! Through VSNL. Through Reliance. Through many many other service providers. International connectivity isnt a problem. Its when the damn pipe this the shore (i.e. VSNL's landing stations - since they have a monopoly here over all international circuits) that the problem starts!
-
Obviously "accredited" journalists in UP dont keep track of whats happening in the rest of India. RIM has had this offer for a month or two I think for anybody with 2,500 and a Proof-of-address!
-
Thats right. Linux your ethernet cable has a speed limit of 100 Mbps. Doesnt mean your ISP is actually tossing data down it that fast. Things like routers, repeaters and the like determine your internet speed. You're probably around the 64 kbps mark.
-
Sure and then tear my head out configuring my devices. Dont get any software/games or support for it blah blah blah! Linux is for S&M people who like hurting themselves. Sorry dude. Tried it. Didn't like it. Prefer productivity and getting things done and playing games and just plugging in any device to get it to work! And Windows does its simply and beautifully. It might have viruses and all that. But I manage to keep myself safe by being smart and informed. And thats a way better option than going to Linux (for now at least)!
-
Skull: you need mobimb. And bluetooth or a datacable or IR. You need to just drag and drop the jars into the collections or games folder. And then they're ready for use.

I'm a little confused by the rating. How can Outstanding be higher than best! But its been great here. Especially in the inital dark days of RIM. When they were lying so hard even they got lost! Helped clear a lot of doubts. And I'm sure I've contributed a bit to this forum too! So it has been a very successful forum. I dont know it any other mobile service provider or ISP has such a great forum!

Really dont know. Because I dont reinstall my OS every other day! I dont think you can do a backup like that with ZoneAlarm. But its not a feature for me or most normal people at any rate. More so, if you have a decent connection.
-
Guys I think you should try Zone Alarm. Its small (well the 23 MB download apart) its fairly light and doesnt detoriate performance too much for running normal applications. It does make Outlook startup time slower. But it doesnt increase the mail download time at all - something that Symantec did significantly. And it is a complete internet security suite. So you get your antivirus, anti-spam, anti-spyware and firewall in one cool package. I'd recommend the AVG AV & Firewall combo too. But I couldnt find the crack when it had just launched! And can ZoneAlarm make good AV software? Ask PCMag - they have been voted Editors choice for 2005 and again for 2006 range of internet security products!!! http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1891760,00.asp

Dude dont believe that lil Windows pop-up. Thats all bull. It can be changed from the control panel. I've set mine to show 920 kbps. Instead download a good bandwidth measurement tool to check your speed. There are alot of great tools at downloads.com and pcmag.com. If you get 11.5 KBps (notice the capital B as in KiloBytes per second) thats equivalent to around 92 kbps (kilobits per second). This speed is dependant on server/network load, connection strenght etc. But of course Getright gives you an AVERAGE speed. so your actual speeds might vary significantly! Get a bandwidth measurement utility to check what your max speeds/dropouts etc is like. Most tools give good graphical representations that you can use to check fluctuations. That will give you the best idea about your connection speed and stability.
-
Suprisingly RIM delivers on promised speeds. I get a consistant 130+ kbps speed on RConnect. Verzion users on 1xCDMA claim around 90 kbps! So we can probably expect as close to 2.4 Mbps as possible!
-
Dude I know I can do a site search through command lines in google search or through the google toolbar. But not everybody has the Google search (TOOLBAR) or knows command line parameters. I'm suggesting a tool that EVERYONE can use!

Of course they are not ready. How can anyone say "yes I'm ready I've spent crores of rupees on building up. Now I'm spending crores more for changing my systems to support CAC. Now I cant wait to get screwed over by anyone any everyone!"
