  1. Evdo Status

Kesav... man.... Neither LG nor Toyota have outright market leadership in anything. So they do not serve as examples of any monopolistic corporation. Good or bad. Google might have been a better example (of good). But they are an exception. And knowing about the "ethical practices" of Reliance.... And the 7230 is a full fledged EVDO phone. Web browsing and video streaming is not what defines EVDO, they are services that can take advantage of EVDO to deliver richer content. The chipset and data connectivity speed (2.4 Mbps) defines EVDO. To quote your link - http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/pr...selTab=Features EVDO Connectivity * Enjoy wireless data transfers up to 10 times faster than dial-up. Thats all EVDO is. Don't confuse it with the features and functionality of smart phones. EVDO is a relatively expensive technology so it will of course appear on the high end models first. And yes wCDMA is slower than EVDO. So? Is that what I said or what you were beetching about what happened in Japan? Achillies: And as for 3G. CDMA 1x2000 is a 3G technology. So any phone on Reliance is a 3G phone. But more importantly you WILL get 2.4 Mbps internet connectivity on your 7230 once RIM starts EVDO services. If you want to sell it when RIM starts EVDO I will be happy to buy it from you! And I think all RIM-Nokia phones have a R-UIM slot (disabled) on them. As does the Telson and the GTRAN models. R-UIM is not appreciated by Reliance or even the Tatas. The true purpose of R-UIM was to be an equivalent of a GSM SIM card. So you should be able to buy JUST the chip from a shop and insert it into ANY R-UIM CDMA 1x2000 phone and it would be programmed OTA. But thats not what happens, even with Tata.

Kesav: Firstly its the LG 7230. And it is an EVDO phone. Dont think. Live with it. http://www.rimweb.in/forums/index.php?show...052&mode=linear Secondly, the Govt. is not waiting for GSM 3G standards to be finalised or for Airtel to say it is ready/capable to implement 3G or anything like that.. They cannot allow GSM players to start 3G services because the 2100 Mhz bandwidth is being used by the Army. So they will have to wait for the Army to clear that. And naturaly it cant be done overnight. And while I would like RIM to start EVDO from tomorrow. This argument is reasonably fair. And while you might not care about competition, examples like AT&T, IBM, Microsoft, the Rockerfellas etc etc etc sure makes a lot of other people care about it. Thirdly the Japs at least DoCoMo & Vodafone use 3G GSM technology - wCDMA. (Ashok - VGA Boy make a note). Only KDDI uses EVDO. And the earliest wCDMA implementation was done in 2001! EVDO (KDDI) in 2002, i.e. well after GSM was there! http://www.eurotechnology.com/3G/. And finally, what will be the cost for EVDO/wCDMA services. Given how incredibly expensive an unlimited 144kbps connection is. Plus factoring in the price of a high end evdo phone (and how many of those has RIM sold till date)! I'm guessing there wont be any long queues outside webworlds of people waiting to signup for 2.4Mbps services.
  3. Bittorrent Is Totally Legal Now

Yeah sure and people will stop piracy.
  4. Best Mobile Fone For Rconnect ?

Ramchi: The 6255 speed is fine. If you're getting slower speeds I doubt if your phone is to blame for it. The only problem with the 6255 is that the BT connection fails. Alot! Deadman: All phones with USB connections charge the phones while you're online so its a much better option. The LG phones just **** from stupid design. And considering the price difference - Rs. 10,000 and you'll be getting a phone as well as a modem, where as with a data card you're just getting a modem! The phone is obviously a much much much better option.
  5. Yeah I'm not too comfortable buying tickets etc through RWorld. Mobile technology has a long way to go before people will be willing to purchase things worth Rs, 10,000 and more through a mobile. For one its too damn hard to select a plane/train, create a reservation for the travellers, book the tickets and pay! Just like its too damn hard to send emails through RWorld! Whereas its relatively simple, cheap and low risk to buy a ringtone. SMS POLY XXX to YYYY and you have the ringtone! Then of course there are security and psychological issues. I dont see the airlines tickets scheme going too far either.
  6. Best Mobile Fone For Rconnect ?

Umm use a phone. Costs 2k. I've used the Samsung 191 & 563. Both worked great. The 6255 works great too but with the cable only.
  7. Evdo Status

No. I think only the LG 7130 (I think thats the one) is a EVDO phone from RIM's stock.
  8. Evdo Status

Yes and today RIM (thats Reseach in Motion the big daddy of productive mobiles) launched its 1st EVDO model. There is no dearth of phones available in the market. Thing is the Govt. wont allow it. Stupid phuckin idiots. They dont want to give CDMA an unfair advantage!
  9. Why Cant We Google It?

Tanveer - that tool is called Google!
  10. All About Nokia 6255

Guys - Nokia/RIM might be finally listening to us. They've released a lot of help/faqs/tutorials etc to simplify the internet/modem connectivity for the phone. http://www.relianceinfo.com/Infocomm/Rim/h..._nokia6255.html Recommend we add a AT+CRM=1;+CSO=33 in the advanced options. I'm not sure if this will fix the disconnecting problem but lets see. While dialing out it still fails the first time! I think they should come out with a simple installer like they have for the Samsung/LG phones and do away with the stupid configurations and give a better out of the box experience for users.
  11. A long story. So sit back and listen. On Tuesday (for the week of 13th Nov '05) I got a SMS at 4 PM saying that I should pay my outstanding dues immediately or my services will be disconnected. I have got such notices from RIM when they started operations and didn't have a clue of what was going on. Of course I had never defaulted on a payment. So I ignored the message as usual and went about life. At 6 PM I got a second SMS saying my outgoing calls had been deactivated. I checked and it really was. Now this made me pretty pretty pretty damn furious! I am a good customer for RIM. I get very large bills and I pay them on time every time. Plus I have been with RIM forever and who the hell were they to disconnect my service! So I called up CC and they told me it was because a credit card payment of mine had been rejected they had disconnected and advised me to make a payment (value of which was my bill due for the month of Oct - the bill and they last date for payment for which had not arrived yet)! Now there’s extreme stupidity, then there’s George Bush, and finally RIM customer care. Admittedly it has improved and handles most activation/plan change/billing queries related info better. But for special cases and special customers - I am apparently a Platinum Customer, which is the best type of customer for RIM - they should have someone more competent to deal with the situation. They did not and continued reciting stupid things like parrots. This made me even more furious. Now a flashback - what lead to the problem. I had paid my bill for Aug '05 online by credit card twice. Reason being, the first time I paid it I got a "transaction failed" error. The second time the payment went through. Now 5 days later I saw only 1 payment acknowledged on RIM's site but my online banking account should 2 payments made from my credit card. So I first called RIM and confirmed they had received only 1 payment. Then I called my bank and told them to cancel the 2nd payment. Where had the money gone I wondered! My bill Sept '05 came and they asked me to pay the balance amount (Sept bill - Aug Bill double payment). But since I had cancelled the 2nd payment I paid RIM in full for Sept 05. One month later RIM finally realised that the 2nd payment for Aug 05 had been rejected by my bank. This was an excess amount over and above my bill so it isn’t like I owed them money. But they still felt the need to disconnect my phone with a 2 hour notice period. I, of course, am a very through person. I had captured screen shots of my problem and stored them in my Gmail account. A quick search through my 8-10,000 mails helped me retrieve the screenshots in 0.012 of a second! That night I found out the names and email addresses of 3 of RIM's head honchos and really lambasted them for disconnecting my service (the screenshots were included in my mail). Oh and I had also send the same mail to the Chairman’s Office too. By, 10 AM next morning (Wednesday) I had received apologies from all 3 head honchos. In their mail they had all referred my problem as top priority to very senior CC people and asked me to contact them again if my problem was not resolved in 48 hours. In reply to my same mail Chairman’s Office sent me a reply - “We tried contacting you but were unable to reach you. Please give us your phone number, customer account number, and details of your problem…..”. Freaking idiots. My outgoing had been discontinued. I had sent them a very threatening 4 page mail. And this is their reply. In-phuckin-credible I say. Anyway, by 12 noon Wednesday, all my services were restored and things worked great. At 1 PM a guy from the Chairman’s Office calls and says that he had been forwarded the complaint by one of his seniors and he wanted to inform me that my services had been restored but I should pay the Aug 05 bill amount again immediately. (Banging my head against the wall)! I told him I would not and he could try disconnecting my services again. He replied he would forward my problem to the billing department. (wonder which department was handling the problem before – maybe the gardening staff was)! That evening (Wednesday) I got a call from the head of RIM’s Post Paid Customer Care. He was of course much more courteous in his behaviour and he assured me that my problem was taken care of and asked my opinion of their services etc. A good PR effort and well appreciated too! Which is what Chairman’s Office should have done before disconnecting me in the first place. On, Wednesday evening I got a mail from the Chairman’s Office again saying that I had to pay Rs. XXXX otherwise I would not have my services restored (they already had been restored that afternoon). XXX = my bill due for the month of Oct - the bill and the last date for payment for which had not arrived yet! I forwarded the mail to the Head of RIM’s Post Paid CC on Thursday and asked him to explain why on earth I got such a mail. After all, if he was personally looking into the matter I should not have to deal with this kind of mail. Soon I got a call from what seemed to be a slightly smarter CC person who said that I do not have to pay anything now and should just pay my Oct 05 bill by the due date. Today morning (Friday) I got a call from the same person again checking to see if everything was working fine and assured me to just pay my bills by the due date and not worry about this problem it had been resolved. In the evening I got another call this time from the head of Customer Care (Maharashtra & Goa) who was enquiring to see if my problems had been solved. He gave me his mobile number and everything and asked me to get in touch with him for all my problems. That’s good PR I think. I thanked him for his help. Of course I’m in the process of mailing my thanks to the 3 head honchos I had first mailed as well. But the lesson to be learnt here is that if you talk in the right way to the right people you can get things done even with RIM! So the people who keep b*i*t*c*h*i*n about unresolved problems - there is hope!
  12. Hack Your Nokia Phone

Yeah thats what they do. But its all good.
  13. Its usually a firewall problem in your own machine that prevents voice chats. Check if you can do file transfers. If you cant go to Preferences - Connection in Y!M & select no network detection and try if that works or try with no network detection and then reset it back to "no proxies".
  14. A New Ombudsman For Tele Operators

Ombudsman is a sort of mediator who also investigates complaints between consumers etc and govt. or other instituitions.
  15. Ur Wish ... Our Command!

Start a wap server through which I can browse the net using my 6255.
  16. Congratulations Ashok

    Dude! well done!
  17. Customer Support That Works

Ashok: Firstly please dont tell anyone I had breezers it isn't something I'm proud of. Secondly if you mean 30th of Nov then I'm in Pune. And thirdly no I dont remember any of our conversation that night related to this problem!
  18. Nokia 6255 Blues

    1. WAV file size is too large. MP3. Much better thank you very much. 2. SMS - 140 char - could be more. But it works fine for most. 3. BT & IR cannot be activated together on any phone (that I know of) 4. Doesnt happen for me. Although I heard alot about this. 5. Its a series 40 phone. very proprietary code. You dont need any AV unlike the series 60 symbian phones. 6. Use mobimb 7. Yes you can lock your memory card. Highlight the card and go to options, you can set passwords, activate DRM for certain types of content and do a million more things!
  19. Firefox Tips-n-tricks

Dude, Google's doesn't work yet! And if I cant get my google bar -- its not worth surfing through FF. But of course you have get the MozDev Google bar. Or just change your version number.
  20. Firefox Tips-n-tricks

Vishal: You can also edit the config file and change the version value there to "1.0". This fixes most of the extensions. However the problem remains well because of incompatible code! Let me give you an example - I use the USER AGENT SWITCHER extension to "change" FF into IE when I go the Standard Chartered online banking page. This trick works fine in making SC believe that I'm using IE to access their page since they dont allow other browsers to open that page! However, even though the extension has loaded in 1.5 RC3 I cannot use it in the SC online banking page!
  21. New LG handsets in the pipeline

RIM's launched the 2530 & 5340 today. Both look very ugly. But the 5340 looks like it has some pretty nifty features!
  22. Crippled 6255

Maximus - you can download jars anyways to your phone through mobimb! As for POP the 6255 DOES NOT support it! Heres what the Nokia India website says: * Send, receive and share short images, video and audio messages via MMS * Predictive text input * Send and receive emails * Internal handsfree speaker * Share picture highlights of your trip by creating a MMS slide presentation The new 6256i that is being sold in the USA by Verizon does support POP3 & IMAP. Even the older 6255i did not support it.
  23. Crippled 6255

SMS is compabtible with all mobile services! Only LONG SMS messages arent support. MMS compatibility is a RIM-vs-other-service-providers issue not a 6255 issue. You CAN send emails through your phone. Just type it in as a regular TEXT message. Select SEND - SEND TO EMAIL and send it. You cant receive any emails on it. And thats the problem. This is a non-issue because you dont have POP, mail client etc support like in Blackberry devices. OTA java apps cost between Rs. 50-100 to download and store (on Yahoo and the like). RIM charges Rs. 2 everytime you download the game. Use blue tooth. Its free. Its fun.
  24. Crippled 6255

Thanks Manish. I'm the one who first discovered and posted that hack here. I cant get a third party wap server that I can connect to. But I dont think RIM would allow that anyways.
  25. Crippled 6255

I just dont like the fact that there is no WAP access. If they provide it on the Kyocera, no reason why they cant here. Especially considering it would be 100000000 times better than Jatayuus software.
