Longhorn Becomes Windows Vista™
anujit replied to Vishal Gupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
Static: They can develop the thing on supercomputers for all I care... but they have to run the damn thing on ordinary machine to see if it works! And the front-end isnt developed because their management/planning/coding/testing s**ks not because they didnt have 4GHz P4s! Which is why they gave up on it. Maybe you'll see it in Win 2010 version! -
Well what a post Arun! And considering the debacle with REL I'm not sure how good RIM is in times of crisis. The Ambanis have a lot to learn about consumer services. REL - their 2nd consumer oriented business is suffering like RIM did (and probably still does)!
-
Maybe its just band bajaoing!

Guys guys guys.... This lack of RSurf worries me.... is there anyone here who's used a RIM LG/Samsung handset before? What other features are not there in the 6255?

Hackers Crack Microsoft's Antipiracy System Windows Genuine Advantage system first exploited within 24 hours of its launch. Elizabeth Montalbano and Robert McMillan, IDG News Service Monday, August 01, 2005 Microsoft says that hackers managed to bypass a process it had implemented several days ago to ensure that users of Microsoft's update services possessed legitimate copies of Windows before they could download updates and content from those services. A posting on the Boing Boing blog claimed that a JavaScript command string could bypass a check that Microsoft instituted Wednesday through the Windows Genuine Advantage 1.0 program. According to the posting, users can override the WGA by pasting the string java script:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') in the address bar of their browser and pressing Enter. The code "turns off the trigger for the key check," according to the blog posting. Quick Work The WGA program requires users to run a program verifying that their Windows operating system is not pirated, before they can use Microsoft's software update services. Microsoft had been running it as a pilot program since September 2004 but made the validation system a requirement just last Wednesday. A Microsoft spokesperson conceded on Friday that hackers had indeed succeeded in cracking the WGA program, but said that the software giant will fix the flaw they exploited in an upcoming version of the WGA program. The exploit came soon after Wednesday's launch of the program, the spokesman said. "Within 24 hours, hackers claimed to have circumvented the process and it appears that they did," he said. "This is a hack that exploits a feature that enables repeat downloads in the same session so that a hacker never has to validate as a genuine user," he said. The move to lock out pirated copies of Windows from the update sites is part of Microsoft's effort to fight software piracy, a major issue for the software vendor. Easy Hack? The Boing Boing hack is not the only way to get around WGA's restrictions. David Keller, founder of PC consulting and services firm Compu-Doctor in Cape Coral, Florida, was able to change his Internet Explorer settings to bypass WGA when he ran into a flaw in the program that flagged a legitimate product key on a customer's Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 as invalid. "The customer was the original owner, no hardware was changed since purchase, nor was Windows ever reinstalled on the system," Keller said in an e-mail to the IDG News Service. WGA had rejected the operating system, nevertheless, thereby preventing Windows Update from working, he said. Keller wrote that he did not have much luck with Microsoft support technicians, so he found a way to bypass the validation process on his own and moved along with the update. He accomplished this by disabling the Windows Genuine Advantage add-on within his browser's Internet Options. By clicking on Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Manage Add-ons, Keller disabled the WGA add-on. He then exited Internet Explorer and was able to do a Windows Update without completing the validation step. ----------------------------------------------------- Vishal don't get too excited this article was posted in PC World - http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,122058,00.asp

I have a question for all you new 6255 buyers: Can you access sites like Yahoo Messenger etc through WAP.
-
Ashok: Important to note here that the pumps in Bbay dont work. Which is why you got flooded in the first place....couldnt discharge it out in to the sea fast enough! It might be better if you prayed to the raingods. Raccoon: We don't have enough water here. Where did you see any water today! And I dont want it to flood so bad that people die and property is damaged etc. Just enough so that I dont have to go to work and everyone can stay home safe and sound!

Hey RIM won an international award for R-World..... fantastic WAP implementation they said! And I have no complaints against any govt. Actually I have complaints against all govts. but I wont get into that (for now)! But I'm extremely disappointed with Pune... it rained and it rained all weekend and Monday and not a single inch of water logging! And I had to trudge to work in the freak*i*n rain and back on a cold wet Monday monring!

Here you are Akash: Tata Tele spat: BSNL pegs Gujarat loss at Rs 80 lakh Mithun Roy / Ahmedabad July 12, 2005 State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) says it lost Rs 80 lakh in Gujarat owing to Tata Teleservices’ (TTSL) violation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) guidelines. BSNL says TTSL used the znumbering level 55, 56 and 57, which are marked for WLL (wireless in local loop) services. “TTSL uses the fixed numbering level to provide WLL telephone services, in complete violation of Trai guidelines. We lost revenue of Rs 80 lakh as there is a different pulse rate for fixed line and WLL services,” D K Agrawal, principal general manager, BSNL, Gujarat circle, said. BSNL says TTSL was thus enjoying the benefits of a fixed line service operator even as it was offering services called ‘Walky’, which was essentially a limited mobile service. Asked what initial actions BSNL had taken, Agrawal said: “BSNL has decided to treat all calls to level 55, 56 and 57 of TTSL as limited mobile and a 45-seconds pulse rate is applicable as per a unified access service provider, limited and fully mobile with immediate effect.” According to BSNL, the language of the TTSL advertisement and brochures goes: ‘Tata Indicom Walky combines the best features of the mobile phones and the landline. It gives you features like freedom of mobility, caller line identifications, short messaging service, phone book and missed call details, while retaining the extremely low tariffs of a landline’. As the interconnect usage charges (IUC) applicable for limited mobile services are different from fixed line wireless services, there appears to be an attempt by TTSL to evade the IUC charges, including access deficit charges (ADC), payable to BSNL for limited mobile services by providing limited mobile services in the disguise of fixed services. The BSNL called upon TTSL to immediately pay the entire amount of IUC as per clause 6.4.9 of the interconnect agreement for all its calls of limited mobile service through its Walky scheme handed-over to BSNL on the BSNL trunk groups meant for fixed line traffic for the period of last two months, i.e. from November 14, 2004 to January 13, 2005. Thus, the difference of the IUC charges, including the ADC in this regard should be paid by TTSL immediately. The ADC paid by BSNL to TTSL for the calls originated by limited mobile and cellular/fully mobile subscribers of BSNL and terminated on the numbering levels of Walky should be refunded to BSNL. Further, the traffic information of the inter circle STD calls originated from/received in the numbering levels of Walky and terminated in / originated from the network of other limited mobile and fully mobile service providers and the incoming and outgoing ILD calls to / from the numbering levels of Walky are to be given to the respective BSNL circle offices for billing of ADC payable to BSNL for such calls. TTSL was also called upon to immediately stop the operation of its Walky service using numbering levels of fixed services without paying the IUC charges including ADC, which is applicable for limited mobile services, as the same is contrary to the license conditions, IUC regulations and also to the agreed terms and conditions of the interconnection agreement. It is also understood that the details of the amount to be paid by TTSL to BSNL should also be furnished enabling BSNL to confirm and verify the correctness thereof in terms of the Interconnection agreement. On the other hand, Ajay Pandey, president, regulatory affairs, TTSL, said: “In our opinion, we did not violate any TRAI guidelines as per the claims made by BSNL.” Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal is going to give final judgment on Monday as now it becomes a nationwide issue, Pandey added. http://www.business-standard.com/bsonline/...?&autono=194179

They cant uninstall pirated copies because: 1. It would be illegal for them to tamper 2. It could be an error with the reg nos - as is frequently the case in corporations 3. Could damage data which means $$$$ lawsuits The reason why M$ allows you to install patches to pirated versions is because they dont want unpatched computers infecting the rest of the world. And don't worry there well be "patches" around to fix things from Warez! If you think all the collective genius at M$ (all PhDs included) is smarter than some 16 year old kid think again!

I noticed theres no "connection" to RIMs billing systems! Hmmm wonder where they stuck that!

Longhorn Becomes Windows Vista™
anujit replied to Vishal Gupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
Wonder what they're testing it out on. Especially since when they started Longhorn development I dont think they had 4 Ghz Pentiums out. -
You can effectively make "STD calls" with other Indicom subscribers without paying ADC! And we know the "babu mentality" is still very strong here - no people shouldnt talk to each other who knows what they'll discuss! Officially its - Security Risks! And the Haryana police is planning on lathi charging anyone with PTT phones!

RedHat is the most popular Linux distribution. (www.redhat.com). You'll find the Fedora core - which is the free downloadble version that supports a number of Indian languages.

Samsung is stepping up efforts to reduce reliance on Qualcomm Inc. by developing mobile phone chipsets for third-generation (3G) services that use European technology. If the development of the W-CDMA chipsets is successful, Samsung is expected to become significantly less dependent on chipsets made by Qualcomm of the United States, some analysts here said. Samsung is developing a so-called dual-band, dual-mode W-CDMA chipset for use in South Korea. The dual-band, dual-mode chipset means it can work in both the CDMA2000 1X network developed by Qualcomm and the W-CDMA network, a successor of Europe's global system for mobile communications technology. The introduction of the dual-band, dual-mode chipset is considered a crucial factor in South Korea since the government is requiring European 3G service operators -- SK Telecom Co. and KTF Co. -- to provide handsets equipped with the chipset. In South Korea, Qualcomm's CDMA2000 1X technology, dubbed one of the 2.5-generation mobile phone standards, has long been a dominant technology for mobile phones with faster Internet capability. Although SK Telecom and KTF launched commercial European 3G services in late 2003, the new technology has so far been a failure, mainly due to a lack of available handsets and limited network coverage. Operators have accused handset makers of delaying the introduction of dual-band, dual-mode W-CDMA handsets, while handset makers have criticized Qualcomm for postponing the production of necessary chipsets. Still, it remains unclear when Qualcomm will introduce its dual-band and dual-mode W-CDMA chipset, the MSM7600. Qualcomm owns key patents on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, one of two major wireless standards, and South Korean handset makers were the first in the world to commercialize it. Qualcomm has benefited from the rising sales of CDMA handsets in worldwide markets. Under an agreement, Qualcomm collects 5.25 percent of local sales of handsets in royalties and 5.75 percent of exports from South Korean manufacturers. South Korean handset makers such as Samsung and LG Electronics Inc., which enjoy robust sales of CDMA handsets, are key contributors to Qualcomm's earnings. However, Qualcomm has drawn criticism from Korean clients, as it offered a more favorable royalty rate to Chinese manufacturers. Samsung's move to develop its own 3G chipsets is also aimed at taking a leadership role in the so-called fourth-generation (4G) mobile network era, some analysts here say. On March 13, Lee Ki-tae, head of Samsung's mobile phone business division, told Yonhap News that the company was preparing for the local standardization of the 4G mobile network. "I expect the 4G service to start around 2012," Lee said on the sidelines of the world's largest high-tech trade fair, Cebit, in Hanover, Germany. Worldwide demand for W-CDMA handsets is forecast to total about 50 million units this year, according to Lee.

I wonder if Win2k users will give up Win2k by then! And of course MS deadlines.

Tata wasnt fined. Just made to stop the service. Tata is way way way to honest and ethical. Although there is a prospective Rs. 50 crore fine against them for screw*i*n*g with their landline/wll numbers in Rajasthan (or was it Gujrat). Either ways Tata isnt like RIM. Actually no other company is!

Reliance Infocomm, Tata Tele In Interconnect Jam
anujit replied to shuva_nandi's topic in Reliance Communications
There are less users of Tata everywhere! but that doesnt mean there shouldnt be any interconnectivity! TRAI/DOT should ensure that interconnectivity is first in place before any service provider starts ops. That way they wont have spectacular opening failures the way RIM did. -
They stopped Tata a long long while back.

Wheres my gift!!!! :'( And I'm a platinum customer apparently!!!

Stop blamming everything on the weather! I can see around 5 bills and all my online payments (dating back a year). I think RIM's servers are to blame!

ummm googles sites wont work either the xhtml or the wml! But can anyone point me to a decent wap browser that I can go through Rsurf... to get to sites that R-surf cant?
-
You can get new phones at Rs.1999 (as advertised by RIM) including Rs.1000 talk time (local RIM to RIM), and refurbished ones at Rs.1500 - but check if these have new batteries!
-
Why would anyone spend 13k or 9.5 on a card when you can get the same features (and a million more) with a 2k mobile.
