Netsavvy: Yeah you might be right. The 6255 does support some fancy video streaming formats. Probably to hi-fi for RIM! Rakesh: Speed should be 144kbps. I think thats standard for all CDMA 1x 2000 phones.

"Official Price" in a Web world in Pune (Kalyani Nagar) is Rs. 14,800!
-
RIM had for a brief period given gmail access through the webmail option in Rworld. Now that that link is gone (and RIM is charging for webmail) are there any other alternative menthods of access? I tried mail2wap - login works but gives errors quite frequently (our ace programmers at Jataayu to blame I'm sure) I also tried wap.gmailwireless.com - in this only if you give a wrong id/password does it give a correct page saying "invaild password...." otherwise it gives an error (see above for snide comments on Jataayu). Any other way we can access Gmail through wap?

I think thats a great idea Mitul. I think Munnamobile is one such person!

Yes Netsavvy, but no word on "official prices" as yet. Wholesellers in Pune (who have stock) can post their contact details here!!!!

I think thats an old trick works for Samsung 563 too (Menu - 8 - *) and password is 123456. If you go to the debug screen you get alot of number codes on the screen I think some of them stand for battery and signal strength etc. Some numbers keep changing rapidly, some slowly others are static. Can anyone decode the debug screen?
-
I think you need to call the ghost busters!

Isnt the price supposed to be constant everywhere? And probably cheaper at the wholesellers. Anybody has contact details of wholesellers in Pune?

My advice Vinay - throw it away. Who buys a Gtran handset anyway!
-
Thanks for the reply Amit. You didnt tell me how much it costs and whether the WAP access is any good, i.e. can you go to Yahoo and other sites?
-
Wouldnt advise 2nd hand batteries ever. RWorlds are now stocking non Samsung/LG stuff. Probably batteries too that are generally cheaper than orginals. If they have batteries there that would be the safest bet. Usually in countries like USA you could go for non-branded batteries because they would be quality stuff. However in India, they'll usually end up causing problems in 2 months time. So avoid grey market stuff.

Amit: A few questions: 1. How much did you buy it for? Is there any buy back offer for old handsets? 2. I already have a RIM handset so to change my number to the new phone how much does one pay? 3. Can the old handset be reactivated on prepaid/postpaid (I'm sure it can but just checking)? 4. Do you get all the features listed on Nokia's website such as WAP access (directly not through R World), MP3 downloads from your PC, R World, R Connect and the like?

Actually Chirag (and much to my surprise too) VB is right!!! http://www.forbes.com/2003/05/15/cx_ah_0515txn.html http://www.mobile.seitti.com/story.php?story_id=2708 http://www.business2.com/b2/web/articles/0...,533479,00.html http://press.nokia.com/PR/200303/894975_5.html ---------------------------- Actualy (and I'm guessing here), since Qualcomm didn't "invent" CDMA technology, its been around since the 1930's or so and used to fire torpedos from subs, they probably dont have too many patents to cover it themselves! And there is an international body that regulates the CDMA standards so Qualcomm loses out there too. But they do have a stranglehold on the chipset market. I think Samsung & LG (at least all the models in India) uses Qualcomm chips! Maybe even Motorola!
-
A number of RIM models including my Samsung 563 support GPS. It depends on the main Qualcomm chip thats embedded. Go to Qualcomm's website and check out which chips support GPS if you have the time. So theres no big deal in that. More so because GPS isnt supported by RIM so it will be disabled anyways. Hmmm so you'll be paying 2-5k (depending on which rumour you believe in here) for what?

Atul: Rworld isnt everything. But WAP is alot! The whole idea of buying a service provider supported handset is that the handset will have all the services (bells and whistles included) the service provider provides! It is especially disappointing to see that Nokia/RIM have taken extra efforts to remove features that are already there in a phone! The 6225 would be a good example of this! I wonder if this is true of the 6255 as well. And can anyone tell me whats the difference between the 6255 and 6255i?
-
I think its probably because Nokia doesnt like to customise stuff for RIM. It will be interesting to see how many of the mentioned phone features are available in the actual model. Past experience shows they usually chop of alot of the features on Nokia models. For instance youcan be pretty sure that WAP access will be disabled and you'll be stuck using the world's ****tie*s*t WAP application from Jatayu software! Also I don't understand how an "MP3" phone has 16 polyphony ringtones!!!
-
That is good news indeed. Question is how many features would be enabled/disabled on it. It would be a good deal if it came with all the frills for around 10k.

Munna: I thought characters/message in all CDMA mobiles was limited to 140 and for GSM - 160! However some phones support long text messages (around 300-500+/characters per message) by taking the message and splitting it into a number of smaller messages. A low-end LG also supports this functionality I think. ----------------From Mouthshut for the LG 6130 - http://www.mouthshut.com/review/LG_RD_6130-68660-1.html Messages:The phone supports both MMS and SMS. SMS storage capacity is particularly less. It stores only 31 messages. Moreover as it supports Hindi as well and therefore the capacity reduces if the message received is in Hindi. However 15 sent and unsent msgs. can be stored in Outbox. 5 MMS messages can be stored each having a maximum limit of about 100KB. 4 can be saved in Unsent and other 5 can be saved in drafts so the total MMS capacity is about 13. Moreover MMS cannot be sent to GSM networks currently only RIM fones have MMS sharing. --------------------------- --------------- From the RIM website - http://www.relianceinfo.com/Infocomm/Rim/h..._nokia6585.html Messaging: Send and receive text messages (Maximum 90, including Inbox, Sent Items, Archives and My Folders). Receive SMS in Hindi; Also send SMS to 10 numbers at a time. Group SMS: Up to 8 Distribution list can be created with 10 recipients each.------------ Obviously there are million other differences between the two such as cams, screen colours, polyphony etc etc.

I thought the format was 093xxxxxxxx@rmms.ricmail.com. Either ways doesnt work now. I don't know how they can charge for service like this!
