  1. Google Android Runs On A Sim Card

The SIM cards in cellular telephones might be smaller than a postage stamp and less than a millimetre thick but that hasn't stopped South Korea's SK Telecom from cramming all the major components needed to run Google's Android OS inside one of them. The carrier's Android SIM, a prototype of which is on show at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, includes an ARM-based processor, companion memory and 1GB of flash memory to store the OS and other data. SK Telecom envisages such a SIM card could be used between a number of "dumb" terminals, devices that have ancillary peripherals such as a screen and keyboard but lack a processor and pre-installed OS. The SIM card uses the USB 2.0 interface to communicate with the terminal. All of the user's applications and data are stored alongside the OS in the SIM card, so the user's desktop could be transported between devices by switching the SIM card between them. For example, a PC desktop could be switched into a cell phone for a commute. SK Telecom said it's only a prototype at present and there are no plans to bring it to market but its development shows the level of miniaturisation and amount of hardware that can be crammed inside a cell phone SIM card. In April the carrier, which is South Korea's largest mobile operator, will rollout a series of customised SIM cards preloaded with applications and other data. Several "smart SIM" cards are being demonstrated at Mobile World Congress. They include a financial SIM that includes an application to monitor markets, a SIM branded by a pop group that includes their music videos and a sports-themed SIM from a soccer club. SK Telecom is also experimenting with a SIM card with built-in wireless electronic money function. The card could be used to add wireless e-payment to handsets that don't have such a feature built-in.
  2. Open source effort to replace current mobile fail Research In Motion (RIM) co-CEO Mike Lazaridis this morning showed off the company's latest BlackBerry Browser, based on the WebKit open-source browser-engine, to anxious Mobile World Congress (MWC) attendees in Barcelona. The day was a long time coming, as the BlackBerry Browser is probably the single most-commonly attacked component of RIM's BlackBerry OS. That's because the existing BlackBerry browser is slow, it has trouble with many JavaScript-heavy pages and it renders certain web pages unreadable altogether, just to name a few common complaints. The new Browser's not available yet, and RIM's not offering up specific dates for when you can expect it, though it'll probably hit in late 2010. In his MWC keynote address, Lazaridis was quick to focus on the fact that the new, WebKit-based BlackBerry Browser not only loads JavaScript much faster, it handles AJAX efficiently, supports HTML 5.0 and CSS3 and even scored a cool 100/100 in the Acid3 Web standards test, which is used to gauge a browser's compatibility with a variety of web standards. (Note: Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox, the web's two most common browsers, received a perfect score on the Acid3 test.) The new BlackBerry Browser also supports both BlackBerry Widgets and JIL Widgets, according to RIM's Director of Developer Relations, Mike Kirkup, which will extend the functionality of the browser and should lead to the creation of some interesting new BlackBerry-Browser-based "web apps," or apps that run in the browser. of the new browser in action. Why RIM didn't show off the WebKit browser on the BlackBerry Storm2, with its significantly larger screen and touch-navigation, is beyond me. The demo shows the browser on a BlackBerry Bold 9700, which has a much smaller screen than the Storm2's display and uses RIM's new "trackpad" for navigation. Honestly, it's difficult for me to get too excited about a new BlackBerry Browser after all this time dealing with RIM's subpar offering. Sure, the browser shown in the video appears to be an improvement over the current BlackBerry browser, but I've honestly lost patience waiting for a functional browser from RIM. And I'm worried that the new browser will prove to be too little too late. I'll be more excited once I actually get my thumbs on the software, no doubt, but right now, I can't help feeling like it has taken RIM far too long to get to this point. I may be willing to forget all that if RIM's acquisition of Torch Mobile ends up producing the next-generation browser we're all hoping for.

  12. Google Ready To Add Flash To Android

Google will soon add the capability to play Flash videos to its Android mobile phone OS, Google product manager Eric Tseng announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The move will allow Google to differentiate its platform from Apple's iPhone, which does not support Flash, and Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 Series software, which will not support Flash in its first version. "By working closely with Adobe we can tie the Flash runtime directly into the highend hardware in these devices," said Tseng. He had been invited to demonstrate the technology during Google CEO Eric Schmidt's keynote speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday. However, Tseng's attempt to play a Flash video embedded in the front page of The New York Times website was thwarted by competition for the wireless network in the theatre. "It's buffering," said Tseng. "Everybody get off Wi-Fi now." A second demonstration, of an Android phone playing a trailer for a post-Apocalypse movie, was more successful.
  13. According to Microsoft, hardware partners will not be able to replace the Windows 7 UI. So if you're a fan of HTC's TouchFLO user interface, which runs over older versions of HTC Windows Mobile phones, you're out of luck. It is a bit surprising that Microsoft has locked in the Windows 7 interface because one draw of the platform was the number of different flavors you could get it in. Microsoft is also taking further control over the hardware side. All Windows Series 7 phones will ship with three hardware buttons: Home, Search, and Back. They'll also all be capacitive touch enabled with multitouch. Microsoft's hardware partners include Dell, HTC, Garmin ASUS, LG, Samsung, SE, Toshiba, HP and Qualcomm. NVIDIA, which provided the Tegra chip in the Zune HD hardware, is noticeably absent. Microsoft had no comment. Microsoft plans on bringing Windows 7 phones to all four major US carriers, but are working with AT&T and Orange more closely to bring full lines of Windows 7 phones to the carriers. Microsoft plans to have Windows phones in the market by the end of this year for the 2010 holiday season.

  17. Process shrink leads to longer mobile battery life Chip designer ARM this week showed its first processor made using the advanced 28-nanometer manufacturing process, which should improve battery life and functionality in future smartphones. The mobile chip will be smaller than its predecessor, which could make it work faster and use less power, Arm said in a joint statement with GlobalFoundries, which will produce the chip. It will bring advanced features like interactive gaming and high definition video to devices like smartphones and netbooks. The chip was shown at the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. It will go into production in the second half of 2010 in the GlobalFoundries factory in Germany. The new chip will enable longer talk times and close to double the standby time of ARM's previous mobile chip. It will provide a 40 percent increase in computing performance while drawing 30 percent less power compared to existing ARM-based processors manufactured using the 40-nanometer manufacturing process. The chip could also be used in low-cost laptops and other devices like tablets, said ARM and GlobalFoundries. The chip will be based on ARM's Cortex-A9 design, which is used by companies like Nvidia. Nvidia offers the dual core Tegra 2 chip for devices like low cost laptops and tablets. Arm also said it would extend the intellectual property around the 28-nanometer process design to other partners including IBM. ARM was not available for comment on when devices based on the chip would become available. Depending on the licencee, the most advanced chips with Arm processors are made using the 40-nm or 45-nm processes. GlobalFoundries, which was spun off from Advanced Micro Devices last year, said it would offer production of chips based on ARM licences to customers. The fab company lists more than 150 customers, including STMicroelectronics, Qualcomm and IBM. The 28-nm process gives ARM an advantage over Intel, whose most advanced chips are made using the 32-nm process.
  18. Google Buzz - the new buzz in town!

Google hit by lawsuit over Buzz privacy Tweaks 'too little, too late' says plaintiff A Gmail user has filed a class-action lawsuit against Google, charging that the new Buzz social networking tool set violates the privacy rights of users. Eva Hibnick from Florida, filed the suit in a Californian federal court on behalf of herself and the approximately 31 million US users of Google's popular Gmail e-mail service. The lawsuit alleges that Google violated federal privacy and computer fraud laws by adding Buzz to the Gmail service last week. According to the class action complaint, "Google Buzz made private data belonging to Gmail users publicly available without the users' knowledge or authorisation. Google has publicly admitted that its Buzz program presents privacy concerns, and Google has made several waves of modifications to the program. However, Google's modifications do not go far enough to address the problem. Furthermore, Google's actions have already caused damage because the Buzz program disclosed private user information the moment Google launched the service. The bell of breached privacy cannot be un-rung." Hibnick is seeking unspecified damages and is asking the court to prevent Google from offering Buzz without "appropriate safeguards, default provisions and opt-in mechanisms." Google said it has not yet been served with the lawsuit and would not comment until the complaint has been received and reviewed. In her lawsuit, Hibnick called Google's tweaks to Buzz too little and too late. Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said that if nothing else, the lawsuit should serve as an eye opener for Google executives. "This should definitely be a wake-up call for them to go over Buzz with a magnifying glass and a fine-toothed comb, looking for any other potential problems and try to fix them proactively," Olds said. "Actually, the lawsuit doesn't surprise me at all. In fact, I'm a little surprised that there's only one so far. Given our litigious society, plus Google's recent missteps in terms of privacy, I wouldn't be surprised if state and/or federal regulators got into the act, too. Google did make some serious blunders with Buzz. Plus they aren't the underdog anymore. Their halo is getting a bit tarnished in some ways." Olds added that he doesn't foresee the lawsuit having a major financial impact on Google but it should bring more scrutiny down on the company and its privacy moves and policies.
