Spectrum for Customer Base for 3G Rollout in India
vmsanghrajka replied to @ksh@T's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
TRAI to reassess 3G spectrum issue: DoT Sify India Wednesday, 24 May , 2006 Ignoring the earlier TRAI recommendations on spectrum, the Government today asked the regulator to give fresh recommendations on requirement and pricing of spectrum for the next generation (3G) mobile services. "We have requested TRAI to look into the spectrum for 3G services... besides Department of Telecom (DoT) has already taken up the matter with Ministry of Defence and we hope to get 45 Mhz of frequency from defence services by the year end," Telecom Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, told reporters. The spectrum the Defence is expected to release is in the IMT 2000 band and 1800-1900 Mhz band which is the band for 3G services. A coordination committee has been set up with members from both the ministries to get the spectrum, he said adding a project worth Rs 1000 crore has already been launched for this purpose. On the functioning of the Group of Ministers (GoM) under Defence Minister Pranab Mukharjee, the minister clarified that the GoM was formed "only for the purpose of vacating spectrum from defence services and how to fund it." "GoM was not for framing the spectrum policy," Maran said while announcing the new target for telecom subscriber at 500 million by 2010. He said in last two years telephone subscriber base has been doubled to 115 million and was expecting to achieve the target of 250 million subscribers by 2007. With the trend in the growth of telecom services, Maran said the new target was achievable within the specified period. -

Pune has embarked on an ambitious project, which on being implemented would be first of its kind anywhere in the world: a digital revolution of unwiring the city. Intel India has been selected as the chief technology consultant for the project by the Pune Municipal Corporation. "We are visualising a wirefree city in which reliable Internet access would be available to everyone. For this we have entered into a tie-up with Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. PMC proposes to deliver easy, seamless Internet connectivity to its citizens, businesses and academic institutions across the 400 square km area of the city," PMC Commissioner Nitin Kareer said. About the cost of the project, he said it was still not known though the Corporation has already made an allocation of Rs 7 crore (Rs 70 million) for it. Intel is expected to submit a detailed technical study on the 'Unwiring Pune Project' in the next three months, he said, adding that the project would be implemented within one year after the technical report gets the necessary approval. Intel has suggested deploying WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) and Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) technologies to empower Pune with high-speed wireless Internet. Rich Echevarrai, vice president, Intel Software and Solutions Group, on Wednesday held a presentation on the project aimed at 'Unwiring Pune' in the presence of Mayor Rajani Tribhuvan, and Kareer. Cricket Scores On Mobiles Phones Banned By High Court !
vmsanghrajka replied to FEVIN-RAJ's topic in The Lounge
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has slapped a counter notice to the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) over offering cricket update through Short Messaging Service (SMS). The association has also filed a caveat in the court as pre-emptive move in case the BCCI decides to file an appeal. Earlier, the BCCI had issued a legal notice on mobile operators for offering cricket updates of the ongoing India-England series to their subscribers through SMS. Cellular operators, however, are contesting BCCI's rights over all information relating to cricket. The BCCI notice had also asked operators to refrain from similar activities in future without obtaining prior permission of the board. BCCI said that cellular operators could get into a commercial agreement with the cricketing body; otherwise it led to unauthorised violation of BCCI's rights and illegal interference with the its legitimate business. But cellular operators are in no mood to cough up any money or share the revenues generated from the service. Most operators charge a premium rate of Rs 6 per update. The BCCI notice stated that the Indian cricket board had exclusive television rights, Internet and SMS rights and all other similar rights for all test and one day matches played in India. The notice also said that operators were continuing with the live updates despite being aware of the recent interim order passed by the Madras High Court. Cellular operators, however, said that BCCI was misusing the judgment to create confusion in the matter. They have also filed an appeal against the order of the High Court. Source: The Hindu -
