  7. Reliance Communications Launches GSM Telephony Services

RCom ready to roll out GSM services in 11,000 towns today After nearly one year of preparation, Anil Ambani is all set to roll out Reliance Communications’ (R-Com) GSM services in 11,000 towns across the country on Wednesday. The service will enhance RCom's product portfolio from the CDMA segment to the more popular GSM segment, which is adding 10 million users a month. He also confirmed that the company will bid for 3G spectrum in both the GSM and CDMA segments and will spend around Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 crore for the purpose. "You will forget the Rs 501 offer," Ambani said when asked how affordable the new services will be. RCom is known for breaking the price barrier by offering both services and handsets at very affordable rates by giving subsidies on handsets. Ambani promised to shake up the GSM segment with RCom's entry. "Bundling handsets is a core competence of our CDMA service. Undoubtedly, we will bring bundled handsets to GSM in 2009," said Ambani. Announced nearly a year ago, GSM rollout had seen R-Com set apart Rs 10,000 crore. "Most of the amount has been committed already. we will invest a few thousand crore more as we rollout the services to more cities," Ambani said. With the launch on the last day of the year, Anil Ambani has kept his promise of launching GSM in 2008 itself. Launching GSM services had been a high priority for the younger Ambani after RCom bet on the CDMA technology initially. However, the technology platform did not take off due to many constraints, primarily the near absence of big manufacturers such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson from the market. The equipment ecosystem failed to develop due to strict licensing policies by Qualcomm, which invented the CDMA technology. Ambani added that the current network rollout as also been carried with the help of traditional RCom vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent, ZTE, Huawei and Sun Microsystems. Ambani refused to give subscriber projections saying that seven out of 10 new mobile subscribers today are coming in the GSM segment. "We would like to see another 100 million subscribers added to RCom in 2009 including CDMA," he said. Currently, the company has 60 million subscribers. On branding, Ambani said all the mobile offerings will be under one brand, Reliance Mobile. He added that the company's current GSM offering in the North East, Reliance Telecom will be brought under this brand. Source: http://www.business-standard.com/india/new...y/00/31/344832/

  18. Aiming at further mobile penetration in the country, Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications is gearing up to launch a 'lifetime' connection offer for Rs 199 against the company's current charges of Rs 649, the lowest from any service provider in the country. The soon-to-be-launched service would enable subscribers to make a call at 99 paise per minute to others, SP Shukla, president ( wireless), Reliance Communications, told PTI. Reliance Communications, which has a subscriber base of 41 million as on December 31, 2007, hopes to add a "significant" number of subscribers to its fold with this offer. "Going forward, we hope to have more than half of our customers under the lifetime fold," Shukla said, adding that this offer would also help the company to significantly increase its topline. The offer would not have any linkage with handsets and subscribers can use any handset to avail the offer, he said. Source: http://www.business-standard.com/common/st...mp;autono=33347

  22. GSM lobby opposes internal portability An operator wants to transfer its CDMA customers to its own GSM network. In an attack on CDMA telecom operators offering GSM services, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the GSM lobby, has objected to “internal” mobile number portability. In a presentation to the Department of Telecom (DoT) today, the COAI challenged a proposal by a CDMA operator that it be allowed to transfer its CDMA customers to its proposed GSM network. The internal number portability, if allowed, is likely to benefit service providers like Reliance Communications (RCom), Tata Teleservices and state-owned BSNL and MTNL which offer both GSM and CDMA services. Mobile number portability gives consumers the choice to change their operator while retaining the number. The DoT guidelines for number portability allow customers to migrate from CDMA to GSM technology within the same operator. However, the COAI contends that such migration has to be conducted through an appointed agency — a sort of clearing house —and not through an internal arrangement by an operator. The GSM operators have said the move will leave the agency redundant, also ensuring that the exchequer loses the entry fee of Rs 1 crore the agency will pay. The government would also lose the annual licence fee paid by the mobile number portability licensee, they said. The association said allowing migration from CDMA to GSM would give the operators unfair chance to increase their subscriber base, which is the basis for allotting additional spectrum. The COAI, in its presentation, said, “Manipulation of subscribers could enable the service provider to misuse the system to grab additional spectrum, manipulate revenue streams for different technologies to evade spectrum-usage charges, creating a non-level-playing field among other operators in the industry.” The COAI said that since the portability would be internal and without the requisite approval by the agency, it would give the operator an edge by allowing it to offer number portability before the scheduled time. The COAI has requested that the number portability should be introduced at the same time for all operators and should be subject to same policy guidelines. And if the government gives the go-ahead to one operator, the advantage should be offered to other operators as well by allowing them to “internally” port their subscribers to each others’ networks. 24. Good news!! Follows on.. Retain your CDMA number for R-GSM even berfore MNP officially launched.. MNP norms: Swap between CDMA, GSM & retain number NEW DELHI: The department of telecom (DoT) has made significant changes in the mobile number portability (MNP) norms to allow customers move between GSM and CDMA services provided by the same operator. As per the earlier norms, customers could move to a different operator and retain their number. But following the amendment, a customer will now be allowed to shift to different technology platform offered by his own operator and still retain his mobile number. The move is set to benefit Reliance Communications (RCOM), Tata Teleservices, and state-owned players, BSNL and MTNL. RCOM and the Tatas now offer pan-India mobile services on the CDMA platform. They are now all set to launch GSM operations within the next couple of months. BSNL and MTNL, which currently offer GSM services, are rolling out full-fledged services on the CDMA platform. ET has learnt that telecom minister A Raja had cleared this amendment on September 23. DoT has also inserted a clause mandating that revenues to the government must not be impacted, when a telco moves a customer from its CDMA to GSM network or vice-versa. In another significant change, DoT has now said if an subscriber is shifting from GSM to CDMA or vice-versa within the same service provider, then the process need not be routed through a centralised agency. “They can set up their own database and execute the process, bypassing the centralised operator,” said sources close to the development. But as per the MNP guidelines unveiled by Mr Raja in August, all porting must be routed only through two centralised operators who will be chosen by DoT. The norms add these centralised operators will become mobile number portability clearing house administrators (MCHAs) and will set up the number portability database (NPDB), which will have the mobile numbers of all cellular users. All service providers will have to link their networks with MCHA and NPDB. Industry sources said dual technology players, operators who offer services on both GSM and CDMA, would be the biggest beneficiaries. “The DoT plans to allow this facility even before the actual MNP, including all operators, is implemented. This may help CDMA players, provided they rollout their GSM platform before MNP comes into effect. Under the actual MNP, the customer can move to any operator. However, the dual tech operators can now give their customers the flexibility to move to another technology platform even before MNP kicks off across all operators. Thus, they get to retain their subscribers who want to move to a new technology platform,” said industry sources. Market surveys have shown that 25-50% of the mobile users in India are unhappy with their operator, and are willing to switch to another service provider if allowed to retain their number.
