  1. Reliance launches Blackberry

i disagree - comparing GSM with CDMA highlights the shortcomings more acutely than just within CDMA alone with MNP [mobile number portability] to become a reality within a year and with dual mode [CDMA & GSM] handsets available, the network technology is becoming less relevant as time goes on.
  2. i doubt it since mine is LG its not a handset issue but a server programming bug
  3. Reliance launches Blackberry

that's a misleading analogy: you can't wear a trouser on your head or a shirt on your legs! but you can use either technology for mobile communications. a better one would be comparing petrol vs diesel cars since both can be used for 4 wheeled transport its perfectly natural to compare rival standards...
  4. yes, upload does not delete your previous erased entries so if you ever have to download, all your deleted entries will get copied and you will have to manually delete each one! in my case my handset has about 275 entries while the server backup has over 325...
  5. actually 'anil hacked bharti's call' is misleading since it implies that he took something from airtel whereas the reality is that sunil walked away from the mtn revised terms so anil just picked up the discard. it should have been 'anil picks up sunil's dropped call' or something like that! ;-)
  6. How Do U People Save Tax?

has anyone used any online tax filing sites? i'm planning to go for: myITreturns.com for rs. 200/=
  7. I can't help finding it amusing when the news media goes gaga over India becoming #2 in the world. we seem to love celebrating mediocrity as a nation given that with the 2nd largest population in the world, its understood that we should become the 2nd largest market in most industries. i guess the next big step would be aiming for 2nd largest by telecom revenue which will take much longer... until then maybe we could wait to become the 2nd largest handset mkt followed by #2 for internet users etc.
  8. New Moderators! Now Hetal Too!

    belated welcome & congrats!
  9. Questions Asked During Interviews

i disagree - i have used the str & weak question for people with upto 10-15 years work ex frequently its a litmus test of self awareness & communication skills to think that there is an upper limit beyond which such questions can't be asked is simply being naive yes, for a CxO level position you might not get around to it if its apparent from the CV [ even then weaknesses are not! ] but it applies for over 3/4th of the positions in any large company simple questions are necessary in an environment when over 3/4th of the candidates are unable to perform the job they have applied for
  10. Questions Asked During Interviews

these are some questions i ask but only for marketing & branding type jobs: - what's the difference between sales & mkt? [ you would be shocked at how many MBAs in mkt flunk this basic one! ] - give me 3 strengths & 3 weaknesses of yours [ if the respondent can't give a min of 3 as asked, i consider it a failed response if cliche's are used for weaknesses - 'i am a perfectionist' - i reject the candidate! ] over 3/4th of the people i interview are totally incapable of performing the job despite the degrees/qualifications so i focus on basics like communication skills, body language, work exp, dress sense, personal grooming instead of education since it seems to be worthless these days and i will have to train them for a few months in any case before they become useful to the company - current & expected compensation - why do you want to quit your prev job? - what do you enjoy doing? [ don't say working at the office! it sounds too insincere ] - most challenging situation you have ever faced - most uncomfortable time at work - conflict resolution examples - team work / work ethic example but i don't ask all the questions all the time since the interview could take over an hour then! monosyllabic answers get negative points its your time to sell yourself - make the most of it [ if you can't sell yourself first - you can't sell anything else ] i look forward to being impressed!
  11. How To Upload Phonebook In R World

i've noticed its slightly different for different models. but for my RD 6000 it is: 1. click r-world button 2. select phone book upload (if you have never used it before, browse the 'r-menu' for it) 3. it has an up arrow icon ; click 'yes' to proceed 4. it will take 10-20 secs to load and then display your last upload date & # of entries ; click 'yes' to upload now 5. enter your PIN (it will ask you to set this the 1st time) 6. press 'login' - the process starts with a status of 'read X of Y' depending on connection speed it take about 1-2 secs/entry so 60 entries should take about 1-2 min you can't have any special symbols like '&' in your names / labels else it will abort the upload one problem is that if you delete any old entries, they do not get deleted from the server so your total on the server can be more than the actual on your handset if you ever do a phonebook download, all these old / deleted entries will also get saved which is a pain
  12. I would disagree with the quality of tata indicom broadband: for over a month i have been complaining about the fact that i can't renew my account online via credit card and have to write cheques instead. they say the payment gateway is 'not in their control' and thus not their responsibility! to rub salt in the wound they REFUSE to give me a complaint number so that the unresolved issue can be tracked and escalated as it gets older (aging). that's much worse than reliance broadband any day... this kind of hiding of unresolved complaints is unethical in my opinion.
  13. Since its a 50 pager (!), here are some excerpts from our research project:
  14. Phone Book Transfer

finally got it sorted out with intervention from DAKC: you can't have special characters like '&' in your phone book! talk about cryptic error msgs!! it works perfectly now that i renamed an entry customer care was insisting its a handset problem of course...
  15. i asked about this offer and its WORSE than the 649 lifetime! you must recharge with a min of 200 every 6 months so instead of paying only about 650 earlier (since this is now withdrawn), you will pay 599 the 1st year and 400/year after that! for those who want over 3/4th incoming only - you overpay after 18 months of use...
  16. Phone Book Transfer

is anyone else having this upload issue in r-world? i could do the phonebook backups until mid jan and then it stopped working. customer care of course blames the handset (lg rd 6000) since its 'too old' it aborts with an error about 3/4th through the upload (around 75% of entries)
  17. i'm willing to pay 10-20% more to avoid network congestion & call drops! we need to have peak & off-peak pricing very badly to reduce jams...
  18. Value 37" Lcd Tv

mine does have PC connectivity but i needed PIP & independent vol ctrl much more...
  19. Value 37" Lcd Tv

i just got a panasonic 32" for 40 K a week ago only videocon & VU were advertised for less at that size was quite dissappointed that there was no independent volume control for each channel like my 6 year old akai 29" CRT! no PIP either...
  20. Blackberries 8830 (cdma + Gsm) World Phone

i was told that it is 'async' so only CDMA or GSM could be on at a given time unlike spice dual mode handset which is 'synch'
  21. hmm ... sounds a bit like the Rs. 501 monsoon hungama? free/subsidised handsets only work with contracts/lock-in on postpaid globally
  22. CDMA is more 'spectrally' efficient than GSM and requires fewer towers for dense urban areas but for sparse rural areas, GSM has lower capex than what CDMA requires
  23. Spice D-88 Dual Sim

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_sim
  24. Spice D-88 Dual Sim

if the handset is 'synch' then both 'SIM' cards can get calls without switching around (asynch handsets). abroad you can call fwd from one MDN to another so that its transparent to the calling party which SIM is ON at any moment. here you can only fwd between ON-NET numbers that are local which kind of defeats the point of having dual SIM/RUIM. but this is a result of CPP (free incoming) regime. even that can be worked around if operators are allowed to charge the caller 5-10% extra for interconnect fees during call fwd. you could also activate vmail with a greeting that gives your alternate # but its more cumbersome. most dual SIM handsets currently do not have call conf ability the way you need it but that might change in a year or so.
